Eleven cadets and one seniormember from the MartinsburgSquadron attended the 2011 WVWing Summer Encampment. Theencampment was held the weekof June 25 July 2, at the WV

National Guards training base,Camp Dawson, located nearKingwood, WV.

I am pleased to report that the2011 Cadet Encampment was a

great success, with 97 cadetscompleting the one week course,said Col. Dennis Barron, WestVirginia Wing Commander and

director of the encampment.

Thirteen (13)cadets were fromother Wings (2 - MD, 5 - PA, 5 -OH, and 1 - DC), while the restwere WV cadets. Every squadronin WV were represented this yearat the encampment. Approxi-

mately 67% of the 97 cadets

Thunder Over The

Blue Ridge Air Show

The 2011 Thunder Over The Blue Ridge

Air Show/Open House was held on Satur-

day, September 17th. The 167th Airlift

Wing, of the West Virginia Air National

Guard,sponsored the event. Members of

Civil Air Patrols West Virginia and Mary-

land Wings worked alongside members of

the WV Air National Guard to ensure the

spectator area was kept clear of trash and

debris.Members participating came from

the Martinsburg and Clarksburg Composite

Squadrons, as well asthe Hagerstown, MD

Composite Squadron.

Cadet Ken, the DDR inflatable cadet,and

other CAP Members manned a recruiting/

DDR booth, which featured a WWII era

CAP Stinson Aircraft and a late model

CAP Cessna 182T. An estimated 20,000

folks attended the airshow and open house.

Unfortunately, the air show ended abruptlyafter a tragic aircraft accident on the first

day. The cadets who attended the abbrevi-ated show were outstanding in their workand demeanor, which made for a very

professional appearance in front of the Air

Guard personnel and civilian audience.

TOBR Air Show Tragedy

The Martinsburg Air Show, "ThunderOver the Blue Ridge", sponsored bythe 167th Airlift Wing of the WV Air

National Guard,ended tragically thisafternoon after one of the performerscrashed during the show. At the timeof the crash, there were numerous ca-dets present at the air show from theMartinsburg, Clarksburg, and MercerSquadrons, in WV, as well as a groupof cadets from the Hagerstown, MDsquadron. Unfortunately, several ofthe cadets were eyewitnesses to thefiery crash.

Prior to arriving at the air show to as-sist the Air Guard with various duties, Ihad given the cadets a safety briefing,

part of which included the advisorythat if any emergency occurred duringthe air show, the cadets were to imme-diately report to a central location foraccountability purposes and then fol-low the directions of the seniors in

charge.

I am very proud to report that all the

cadets followed their instructions to theletter and reported immediately to therallying point and stood by for furtherorders. Once the cadets were assem-

bled and things calmed down,

the cadets were thoroughly debrieabout the incident and shortly theter, met with the Martinsburg Squron'sCharacter Development OffiPastor Gary Gourley. I believe ththecritical incident response was dled in a very professional mannethe senior members present, and Icially want to note Capt Gourley'squick and appropriate response toincident. I feel confident that all ocadets' anxieties and reactions we

dealt with in a very competent maalthough the effected Unit Commers may want to have a follow-upcussion with their cadets who werattendance.

Again, I want to express my pridethe professionalism shown by thedets, the senior leaders, and Capt Gourley, in the face of such a tragaccident.

Jack was a graduate of the USAF Academy, and spent 13 yearsactive duty as an Air Force fighter pilot flying over 2500 hoursin the F-15 and F-4 aircraft. His aviation awards include three

Meritorious Service Medals and Tactical Air Command's Instructor Pilot of the Year. Hehad over 4000 hours and held an Airline Transport Pilot and sailplane rating.

Cessna FITS/G1000 course

On June 25th, 0800 - 1700, Lt Col Shelton Davisheld the ground school portion of the Cessna FITS/

G1000 course for Sandra Feliciano and 2d LtRobert Schemmerling.

Aircraft Familiarization ClassDuring the July 12th squadron meeting a helicop-

ter, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection land-ed next to the squadron hangar. At the request of

Capt Petty, the flight crew gave our members animpromptu familiarization class on the UH-1 Bell

Huey Helicopter.

and that the training day was a huge success. Eventhough it was mostly power point presentations,we got a lot done and we are now ready to move

forward in ES and the squadron is well on its wayto having a Ground team.The cadets who are on the GT are the Smith broth-ers, the Arehart brothers, the Dye brothers and

cadets Kain, Brenizer and Whetsel.

MANY THANKS to themembers of the MartinsburgSquadron who helped with

the Adopt-a-Highway project,on Saturday, Sept. 24th. We had a total of12members (4 seniors and 8 cadets) report forduty. Within 2 hours, we had picked up 17

bags of litter along the 2 mile stretch of high-way.

Everyone who helped received a special giftfrom the Adopt-a-Highway Program.

This makes the third and final trash pick-up forthe year. In 2011, the squadron filled a total of41 bags of trash along Paynes Ford Road, and

spend 62 man-hours in the process. This alsocompletes the squadron's14th year of serviceto the Adopt-a-Highway Program. During thattime, the squadron members have pick up atotal of1116 bags of litter, which equates to39,060 pounds of trash, or19.53 tons of high-way litter! That is a remarkable achievement!
