Foreword

The Bundesliga – Thrilling and successful

At the end of a thrilling FIFA World Cup the German national team returned from Brazil as world champions. Germany is the first European nation to have won the World Cup gold trophy on the American continent – which marks an outstanding success, just like the recent results of the German clubs in the Champions League. Consequently, we are now looking forward to the 2014/2015 season with

particularly eager anticipation. The Bundesliga thrills football fans in nearly all countries of the world week after week, while more and more international stars recognise it as an attractive competition with plenty of goals being scored in frequently soldout stadiums.

To cater for the continually growing interest in the Bundesliga, we keep developing our digital offerings. At bundesliga.com news about the clubs and matches can be found in English, Japanese and Polish. The official YouTube channel of the Bundesliga, in addition to the greatest goals and emotions, features upandcoming stars, as well as heroes of the past. International newspapers, magazines, websites, and TV channels in particular, regularly inform their readers or viewers about the Bundesliga as well. By publishing this Media Guide the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga aims to provide optimum assistance to colleagues from international media. In addition to the key points of contact for the 18 Bundesliga clubs, it contains interesting facts and figures about the clubs and their history. Furthermore, it provides a wide range of information on German professional football, plus key points of contact for the DFL and its subsidiaries, DFL Sports Enterprises and Sportcast.

The entire team of the DFL Group wishes you an exciting 2014/2015 season. We look forward to continuing our excellent cooperation with you.

Best regards

The league of goalsThe German national team thrilled foot-

ball fans around the world with its attacking style of play and brilliant goals in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and deservedly won the World Cup trophy. This also marked a major success for the Bundes-liga and its clubs whose youth academies initial-ly trained nearly all the players of the successful German team. 15 world champions alone, includ-ing world goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, DFB captain Philipp Lahm, the five-time goal scorer Thomas Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Jérôme Boateng, Mario Götze, who scored the winning goal in the final, Mats Hummels or Benedikt Höwedes were again on the team lists of the clubs at the begin-ning of the 52nd Bundesliga season.

But the German Bundesliga players were not the only ones to deliver convincing per-formances in Brazil. A number of foreign stars who play in Germany made exceptional show-ings as well, such as Arjen Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who took third place with the Nether-lands, the Brazilian Luiz Gustavo or Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne. In total, the 77 players from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 scored 35 goals in the World Cup, more than the representatives of any other league in the world.

Thanks to this large number of nation-al and international top-flight stars, which in-clude Franck Ribéry or the Poles Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Bl⁄aszczykowski as well, the Bundes liga has been numbering among the most successful and attractive leagues in the world for years. Football featur-ing high technical quality and thrilling match-es attracted 42,609 spectators on average to the modern and convenient stadiums in the past season.

With an average of 3.16 goals – more than in any of the past 27 years – the Bundes-liga, in 2013/2014, was again the top league in Europe seeing the largest number of goals scored. The European best mark attests to the thrilling attacking style of football being played in Germany. Among other things, this offense-oriented style of play is rooted in the excellent training of young footballers in Germany. Since 2001 all professional clubs have been obligat-ed to operate youth academies and 925 million euros have been invested in talent promotion ever since – an investment that has more than paid off for the clubs and will continue to bear fruit in future.

Professional structures for a professional league

Professional football must also be or-ganised professionally. This is why in 2000 the 36 clubs and joint stock companies of the Bun-desliga and Bundesliga 2 founded the League Association with the entire organisation of both professional leagues being undertaken by its executive arm, the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga. The League Association, in which all 36 clubs and joint stock companies have equal vot-ing rights, is managed by a nine-strong execu-tive board chaired by its president, currently Dr Reinhard Rauball, and two vice presidents. The League Association is also a member of the

German Football Association (DFB) and close-ly cooperates with Germany’s football govern-ing body.

On behalf of the League Association, the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga manages the operational side of the Bundesliga and Bun-desliga 2 and is primarily in charge of organis-ing and marketing professional football in Ger-many. Since 2005, Christian Seifert has headed up the DFL as CEO of the DFL Executive Board. COO is Andreas Rettig. The DFL’s main tasks in-clude setting up and carrying out all 612 fixtures

in any season in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 as well as organising the Supercup and all rele-gation/promotion play-off matches. The licens-ing of the 36 clubs and joint stock companies is a central part of the DFL’s terms of reference. Only clubs that have successfully gone through licensing are permitted to play in the Bundesli-ga or Bundesliga 2. The DFL examines the abil-ity of all 36 clubs and joint stock companies to fulfil the requirements for professional football in sporting, administrative, infrastructure, secu-rity, media and, in particular, financial terms. The Bundesliga licensing system is considered to be the most stringent and exemplary in Europe. As a prerequisite for an exciting competition, it has also played a decisive role in ensuring that none of the clubs has been forced into administration during any season in the 51 years of the Bundes-liga’s history.

The DFL’s core business includes the cen-tralised marketing of national media rights held by the Bundesliga. Since its foundation, the DFL has succeeded in achieving a six-fold increase in this area. The new contract ensures that an av-erage total of 628 million euros will be split be-tween all League Association members during each of the seasons 2013/2014 to 2016/2017, an almost 50 per cent increase compared to the previous licensing period.

The DFL also continues to promote the development of the Bundesliga brand. Today, the Bundesliga is one of Germany’s best known brands and surveys indicate it is recognised by 98 per cent of Germans.

A service for fans around the world

Millions of supporters around the world track the action in the Bundesliga. View-ers in nearly all of the 209 FIFA countries can watch the games by now and almost all of them can do so with live coverage being provided. To satisfy this continually growing interest and the desire of the fans to be supplied with cur-rent information about the league the digital offerings of the Bundesliga have been subject to continuous expansion and further develop-ment for years.

The English-language BUNDESLIGA.COM website with a dedicated internation-al team of editors covers the needs of the fans around the world. The site comprises reports and portraits of Bundesliga clubs and players, news tickers, statistics during and after the meetings, match day photo galleries and videos, plus play-er and expert interviews – particularly with the international stars. BUNDESLIGA.COM exclu-sively provides facts that have been verified and that users can rely on one hundred per cent. For members of the media and broadcasters there is a separate area with preview kits, match day

reports and details, plus DFL publications and points of contact.

In addition to the English-language site there are dedicated Bundesliga websites for Poland (bundesliga.com/pl) and Japan (bun-desliga.com/jp) in the languages of these coun-tries. They, too, work with independent editorial teams and a dedicated editorial concept.

The Bundesliga is present on other digi-tal channels as well, for instance with its own Bun-desliga channel on YouTube. At youtube.com/bundesliga current match reports, portraits of the league’s stars, historic clips and humorous scenes are shown. Up to 20 new videos are pro-duced per week specifically for the YouTube portal, with English-language narratives, and in some cases featuring special versions tailored to the interests of specific countries. Of course the Bundesliga constantly supplies its fans with up-to-the-minute news and pictures on Twitter and Instagram as well. Since the summer of 2014 content has been available specifically for China on various Chinese social media platforms.

Top-quality TV productionFounded in 2006, the TV media ser-

vice provider Sportcast GmbH, led by CEO Jupp Nehl and COO Alexander Günther, is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of the DFL, produc-ing the basic TV signal for all matches of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 for the nation-al and international TV licensees. In addition, Sportcast produces the promotion/relegation play-offs and the Supercup, as well as all fix-tures of the German Cup since 2008. Sport-cast ensures that the Bundesliga can be seen anywhere in the world. Producing 440 hours of international programme per season makes for over ten hours of footage per matchday. Six matches per matchday are produced in HD as high-quality programmes with English com-mentary and international graphics distribut-ed live via satellite. Matchdays are also sum-marised in the highlight shows and in magazine programmes specially produced for interna-tional takers.

Sportcast also coordinates the contribu-tion and international distribution of the basic TV signal in over 200 countries. Using a proprietary Customer Service Tool, international TV licensees can easily go online and book the matches and pro-gramme formats they are interested in. Satellite data for distribution as well as up-to-date infor-mation on the matchday is also provided.

The central role of the tool is reflected by the figures: per matchday around 400 feed book-ings are made and around 2,700 system mails are sent. Both international and national broad-casters benefit from a high-quality basic TV sig-nal, which meets the highest of demands with different camera standards and the use of state-of-the-art technology.

The top match concept of the Bundesliga includes fourteen cameras: pitchside and super slow-motion, reverse-angle and chip cameras in

FC Augsburg

FC Augsburg’s football philosophy has won many friends among Germany’s elite. The club, in its current form, was founded in 1969 as a merger between BC Augsburg and TSV Schwaben.

While playing in lower divisions, FC Augs-burg became famous for the successful educa-tion of the German internationals Helmut Haller and Bernd Schuster. Their subsequent ascent be-gan in the early 2000s. After reaching the Bun-desliga 2 in 2006, the club finally gained promo-tion to the Bundesliga in 2011. Playing in a brand new stadium, called SGL arena, FC Augsburg vi-talised the Bundesliga with a dynamic and well-organised style of play and respectable results. Finishing in an impressive 8th place at the end of the season 2013/2014, the team from South-ern Germany has demonstrated that they are on their best way to becoming an established force in German football.

Hertha BerlinClub Portrait

Hajime Hosogai

The biggest club of Germany’s capital, Hertha Berlin, has a long tradition in German foot-ball. Crowned as German Champions in 1930 and 1931, the founding members of the Bundesliga became a remarkable force in the national top flight. Since the foundation of the Bundesliga, they enjoyed their biggest success in the 1970s, finishing second in 1975 and not being stopped until the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1979. After several years of playing in the lower divi-sions, the 1990s were one of the most success-ful times in the club’s history. Hertha Berlin not

only reached the DFB-Pokal final in 1993 with its second team, but was successfully promoted to the Bundesliga in the season 1996/1997 once again. Furthermore, the club gained internation-al attention with the qualification for the Cham-pions League in the 1999/2000 season. After their recurrent promotion from Bundesliga 2 to Bundesliga in 2013, the club has been providing more than 74,000 spectators the opportunity to watch excellent Bundesliga football once again in the Olympiastadion, which is Germany’s second largest stadium.

SV Werder Bremen

SV Werder Bremen is one of the most successful teams in Bundesliga history which is impressively demonstrated by their second place in the all-time Bundesliga table only be-hind FC Bayern München. As one of Bundesliga’s founding members, SV Werder Bremen became a dominant force in German football. This is under-lined by winning the Bundesliga Championship in 1965. In the mid-1980s and early-90s former head coach Otto Rehagel led the club to signifi-cant success. The Bundesliga titles in 1988 and 1993 as well as the back-to-back DFB-Pokal tri-umphs in 1991 and 1992 are ample proof. Ad-ditionally, the triumph in the European Cup Win-ners’ Cup in 1992 was an extraordinary highlight in the club’s history. Former head coach Thomas Schaaf, who stayed for 14 years in the city of Northern Germany, shaped another era by creat-ing a team that became famous for its attractive style of play.

Brimming with stars like Ailton and Johan Micoud, SV Werder Bremen had its peak in 2004, when team captain Frank Baumann lifted the ‘Meisterschale’ as well as the DFB-Pokal to the sky. In recent years, the appearance in the 2009 UEFA Cup final with stars like Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker, Diego or Claudio Pizarro caused enormous international attention.

Borussia Dortmund is one of the most popular clubs in Germany and well-known inter-nationally for the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK in which more than 80,000 fans create an incredible at-mosphere from matchday to matchday.

As one of the founding members of the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund experienced fluctuating success concerning the clubs’ stand-ing. The glorious eras both in the 1960s and mid-90s were highlighted by several domestic and in-ternational titles such as the UEFA Cup Winners’

Cup in 1966 and the UEFA Champions League trophy in 1997.

With coach Jürgen Klopp, Dortmund to-day is once again a powerhouse on national and international level, winning back-to-back Bun-desliga titles in 2011 and 2012 along with the National Cup in 2012. Their sustained success on national and international level is evidenced with their appearances in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final as well as in the DFB-Pokal final in the following season.

Established in 1899, Eintracht Frank-furt is one of Germany’s best-supported and most successful clubs. National champions in 1959, the nicknamed ‘Eagles’ were founding members of the Bundesliga and remained a top-flight institution until 1996.

Their greatest achievements are four National Cup titles (1974, 1975, 1981 and 1988), one UEFA Cup triumph in 1980 as well as an appearance in the 1960 European Cup

final. In Eintracht Frankfurt’s long-lasting Bun-desliga history, several stars like ‘Charly’ Körbel who holds the Bundesliga record with 602 ap-pearances, Bernd Hölzenbein who scored 160 goals between 1967 and 1981, the Korean in-ternational Bum Kun Cha and striker Anthony Yeboah from Ghana wore the famous black, white and red coloured jersey. After the relega-tion in 2011, the club returned to the Bundesliga in 2012 and immediately qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

Sport-Club Freiburg

Since first gaining promotion to the Bun-desliga in 1993, SC Freiburg has hopped be-tween the top two divisions no less than seven times. Volker Finke spent an impressive 16-year spell as Freiburg’s head coach between 1991 and 2007, laying the foundations for a tradition of youth development which has borne plenty of fruit in recent years.

A well-structured philosophy of foot-ball including an educational approach of young talents is available until today and guided SC Freiburg to three appearances in internation-al competitions (1995, 2001 and 2013). Finish-ing in third place at the end of the Bundesliga sea-son 1994/1995 can be pointed out as the club’s biggest success.

Hamburger SVClub Portrait

As a founding member of the Bundes-liga, Hamburger SV is an institution in German football with a long-lasting tradition. They re-main the only club never to have been relegat-ed from Germany’s top flight. Hamburger SV enjoyed its most fruitful years on the nation-al scene in the 1970s and 1980s, when the so called ‘Rothosen’ were on top of the Bundes-liga at the end of three seasons and caused Euro pean attention with their two glamorous European Cup wins in 1977 and 1983. Their ap-pearance in two semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in

2009 and 2010 can be named as the greatest success on international level in recent years. Within the long history of Hamburg’s biggest club, a lot of prominent players like club legend Uwe Seeler, the German internationals Horst Hrubesch and Felix Magath as well as outstand-ing striker Kevin Keegan wore the famous jer-sey of Hamburger SV. In recent years some of the famous players were the Netherlands inter-nationals Rafael van der Vaart, Ruud van Nistel-rooy and Nigel de Jong or the Belgian national captain Vincent Kompany.

In the last few years Hannover 96 expe-rienced a successful chapter in its long-lasting history that goes back to 1896. Two successive campaigns in the UEFA Europa League finally put the club on the European map.

Equipped with two German Champion-ships before the foundation of the Bundesliga in 1963, Hannover made history when they be-came the first ever second-division side to win the DFB-Pokal in 1992. Back in the Bundesliga since 2002, the Reds now look to having estab-lished themselves in Germany’s top flight again.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim tells the sto-ry of an impressive promotion from the fifth division in 2000 to the Bundesliga within only eight years. The club took the Bundesliga by storm in their first season, being first in the table at Christmas 2008, only to be stopped by several injuries of their top players like Ve-dad Ibiševic, who scored 18 goals in his first 17 Bundesliga matches.

Similar success has proven elusive, and they only closely avoided relegation in 2012/2013, before coming back with an attrac-tive style of play featuring a tremendous goal av-erage in the following season.

1. FC KölnClub Portrait Patrick Helmes

The winners of the very first Bundesliga title in 1963/1964, 1. FC Köln can look back on a multi-faceted history in German football. On the one hand, the club had significant achievements by winning two Bundesliga Championships and four German Cup titles between 1964 and 1983.

The founding president of the club, Franz Kremer, was one of the masterminds be-hind the founding of the Bundesliga and the im-plementation of professional football in Germa-ny. The 8th place in the all-time Bundesliga table highlights the prominent role of the club which is well-known for its very loyal and passionate fan base with more than 60,000 members. Sever-al excellent players like Hans Schäfer, Wolfgang Overath, Toni Schumacher, Pierre Littbarski and Lukas Podolski became famous in the long-last-ing history of the red and white coloured club.

On the other hand, the biggest team in Co-logne was relegated to the second flight five times in the past sixteen years. However, they managed to come back after each relegation and are try-ing to become a sustainable force in Germany’s top flight after their last Bundesliga promotion in 2013/2014. Another feature of the nicknamed Billy Goats is the fact that their official mascot is a living billy goat, called Hennes, the current being Hennes the VIIIth in the club’s history.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen began as an after-hours sports club set up by workers of the phar-maceutical and chemical company Bayer which has remained its only stakeholder to this day. In recent years, several outstanding players such as Rudi Völler, Michael Ballack or Lúcio became part of the so called Werkself and established Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a sustainable force in German football.

Winning the UEFA Cup in 1988 and the DFB-Pokal in 1993 as well as five runners-up

spots between 1996/1997 and 2010/2011 in the Bundes liga and their appearance in the 2002 Champions League final demonstrate Leverkusen’s prominent role in European and German football.

No club in Germany enjoyed as much national success in the 1970s as Borussia Mönchengladbach. With five Bundesliga Cham-pionships, two UEFA Cup triumphs and one DFB-Pokal title, the team featuring stars like Jupp Heynckes, Günter Netzer, Berti Vogts and Rainer Bonhof – all part of the German World Cup win-ning national team in 1974 – will be remembered as one of the greatest ever.

The spirit of those times is still notice-able within the BORUSSIA-PARK where near-ly 55,000 spectators create an electrifying atmosphere on every matchday. The contem-porary team thrills the fans with a modern and fresh style of play and has developed to be a sustainable contender for the top places in the league. This was impressively demonstrated by reaching the international qualification places in 2011/2012 and 2013/2014.

The Bundesliga’s record title-holder FC Bayern München has been a dominant force in German football since the end of the 1960s. Since 1969, only three times more than two years passed without Bayern München getting its hands on the precious trophy. 24 German Championships and 17 DFB-Pokal wins under-line the outstanding role of Germany’s most suc-cessful club.

Main personnel supplier to the national team, FC Bayern München also boast by far the largest membership of any club in Germany and after reaching the UEFA Champions League final three times between 2010 and 2013, the Bavar-ians finally lifted the desired trophy for the fifth time in club history in 2013 as a part of their his-toric treble-winning season. With the earliest win of the German Championship in Bundesliga his-tory as well as the title defence of the National Cup, the season 2013/2014 can be named as a record-breaking one not only in the long history of FC Bayern, but also in the long-lasting history of the Bundesliga.

VfB StuttgartClub Portrait Vedad Ibiševic

VfB Stuttgart is one of the most historic and successful clubs in German football. The im-portant role of the team from Southern Germa-ny is underlined by the fact that the three-time Bundesliga Champions (1984, 1992 and 2007) spent 50 out of 52 years in Germany’s top flight. More than that, the club’s history is filled with several outstanding generations of Bundesliga players such as the German internationals Gui-do Buchwald and Jürgen Klinsmann in the 1980s, the so called ‘magical triangle’ including Kras-simir Balakow, Fredi Bobic and Giovane Elber in the 1990s as well as the ‘young and vivid’ play-ers Timo Hildebrand, Kevin Kurányi, Sami Khedira and Mario Gómez in the 2000s.

In particular, the German Cup title in 1997 under the guidance of the subsequent national coach Joachim Löw, the appearance in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1998 and especially the Bundesliga Championship in 2007 can be pointed out as important achievements within the last two decades.

Kevin De Bruyne

Nobody, not even their head coach Felix Magath, had VfL Wolfsburg down as title candi-dates when they stunned Germany by winning the Bundesliga in 2009. A startling second half of the season propelled a team assembled to chal-lenge for a place in Europe to national glory, mak-ing them the first new name to appear on the tro-phy in 39 years.

Ever since, VfL Wolfsburg’s defined goal has been to establish their squad at the top of the league. With a selection of international-

ly well-known players like the Brazilian interna-tional Luiz Gustavo as well as rising star Kevin De Bruyne from Belgium, the UEFA Europa League participants in 2014/2015 are on a straight path to becoming a sustainable top team of the Bundesliga.
