Rabbi Garzon Lecture

Over 80 people braved the cold weather and the unexpected snow

storm this past Monday and attended the Conference given by Rabbi

Baruj Benito Garzon and the screening of the acclaimed documentary “

Tu boca en los cielos”. This was an incredible and enlightening even-

ing with Rabbi Garzón, who emphasized that we should continue our

Sephardic customs and practices as we have been taught by our par-

ents. Rabbi Garzon message to all is that the best education for chil-

dren comes from home and family, and that not only children need to

be educated but also the educators.

We would like to thank the sponsors of the evening including Max

Benaim, the Canadian Sephardi Federation and the Sephardic Educa-

tional Foundation for organizing a very special night with an amazing

speaker.

Baruch Haba

We’d like to welcome Rabbi Gavriel Cohen, Head of the Rabbinical

Court of California and the West Coast, who will be joining us this

Mitzva #3 - Negative Commandment not to eat the Gid HaNashe

Applies to any domesticated and non-domesticated Kosher ani-

mal

Applies to both the right and left thigh.

One who eats Kezayit of the gid receives lashes.

One who eats all of it even if it doesn’t consist of Kezayit re-

ceives lashes.

One who eats the gid hanse from a carcass or terefa gets two

sets of lashes

One may derive benefit from the gid, hence one may sell it to a

non-Jew

This applies in all places, in all times, to both men and women

Hashem expressly did not want to conceal anything from Av-

raham, which is why Hashem told him that He was going to de-

stroy Sedom. Avraham beseeched Hashem on their behalf.

“What if there are fifty righteous people in the middle of the

city? Would you still destroy it?” and he continued praying in this

manner until he asked Hashem to save the city if only ten right-

eous people lived there — which there weren’t— and then Ha-

shem destroys the city. What did it help that Hashem revealed

His decision to Avraham, and of what purpose were all of Av-

raham’s prayers?

R’ Yaakov Abuhatzeira in his sefer Pituhe Hotam explains that

certainly, Hashem never does anything without a purpose, nor

are a tzadik’s prayers for mercy ever returned empty-handed.

Hashem looked into the future and saw that two righteous wom-

en were to be descended from Lot and his daughters: Ruth

HaMoavia, and Naama HaAmonit. Lot himself, however, had no

merit by which to be saved. Therefore, Hashem said: I will reveal

to Avraham My intent to destroy Sedom. He will then pray for

mercy on their behalf, and his prayers will help save Lot.

This is alluded to in Hashem’s response “I will not destroy on

account of the ten.” Which ten? Ruth, who was descended from

Lot was part of the ten generations of tzadikim from Peretz until

David HaMelech. Avraham’s prayers served the purpose of sav-

ing Lot “on account of the ten” generations of tzadikim that

would be completed through him. Additionally, this is why the

verse says HA’asara (THE ten), with the definite article, as it re-

fers specifically to these ten generations of tzadikim.

Furthermore, this conversation between Avraham and Hashem is

immediately followed by the pasuk “The two angels came to

Sedom in the evening and Lot was sitting at the gate of Sedom.”

This juxtaposition, perhaps comes to suggest that it was Av-

raham’s prayers — which resulted in Hashem’s promise not to

destroy Sedom “on account of the ten” — that saved Lot.

Parashat Vayera- Life’s Tests and “Ayin Toba”

The Mishna in Pirkeh Abot (5:3) tells that Abraham Abinu was

tested ten times, and succeeded in each and every one. The

most famous of Abraham’s tests, of course, was the test of

Akedat Yishak, when he was told to sacrifice his beloved son,

Yishak, and he prepared to slaughter Yishak until, at the last

moment, G-d told him to desist.

Rav Haim of Volozhin (Lithuania, 1749-1821) noted a subtle

contrast between this Mishna, and the immediately preceding

Mishna, which states, "There were ten generations from Noah

until Abraham." There, in mentioning the ten generations from

Noah to Abraham, the Mishna refers to our patriarch simply as

"Abraham," whereas in mentioning Abraham’s ten trials, the

Mishna calls him, "Abraham Abinu" – "our patriarch Abraham."

Why?

Rav Haim of Volozhin explained that when it comes to the area

of "Nisyonot" – the tests and trials of life, Abraham is truly

"Abinu" – our father. He bequeathed to each and every one of us

his remarkable strength and determination, the ability to with-

stand and overcome any difficulty and any hardship. By passing

his ten tests, Abraham instilled within his descendants for all

time the fortitude to withstand life’s tests, to triumph over ad-

versity and come out of even the darkest situations stronger,

more determined and more joyful than we were before.

The secret to this strength can be found in a later Mishna in

Pirkeh Abot (5:19), which lists several attributes of Abraham

Abinu, the first of which is "Ayin Toba" – "a good eye." This

means that Abraham looked upon everything as good, firmly

believing that everything that transpires is the will of G-d, who

always does what is best. A person who lives with this pristine

level of faith can overcome any test, any trial, and any form of

hardship, because he trusts that as difficult and as painful as

the situation seems, it truly is good.

Whenever we face a difficult challenge, let us remember that we

are Abraham’s children, who inherited from him the extraordi-

nary ability to withstand any test and withstand any hardship –

and that he has taught us that the way this is done is through

Emuna, through unwavering belief in Hashem’s goodness, that,

as taught to us by Rabbi Akiba, "Everything Hashem does is for

the best."

Asking Somebody Who Has Yet to Accept Shabbat to

Perform Melacha

The Gemara in Masechet Shabbat (150b) establishes the rule

that one may not speak on Shabbat about a Melacha – an activi-

ty that is forbidden on Shabbat. Thus, for example, one may not

say on Shabbat, "Tomorrow I will cook such-and-such food."

Since cooking is forbidden on Shabbat, it is forbidden to speak

about cooking on Shabbat. The exception to this rule, as the

Gemara cites from the sage Shemuel, is speaking about an activ-

ity which, though generally forbidden on Shabbat, could be per-

formed in a permissible manner on Shabbat. Shemuel gives the

example of speaking of one’s plans to walk to a certain place

situated at a distance from the city. Even though Halacha for-

bids walking a distance outside one’s city on Shabbat, one can

avoid this prohibition by setting up small "Burganim" ("huts")

along the road. Shemuel thus ruled that since there is a permis-

sible way to travel outside the city, it is permissible to speak of

this travel on Shabbat. The Rashba (Rabbi Shlomo Ben Aderet of

Barcelona, 1235-1310) applies the Gemara’s ruling to a case of

a person who accepted Shabbat early, as is commonly done dur-

ing the summer months. According to the Rashba, a person who

accepted Shabbat early may perform Melacha (before sundown)

by undergoing the process of "Hatarat Nedarim" – annulling his

vow. He can appear before a Rabbinical court and express his

regret over having taken this "vow" to begin Shabbat early, and

his acceptance of Shabbat is thereby voided. (This Halacha is

codified by several later authorities, including the Bet Yosef and

the Ben Ish Hai.) As such, the Rashba contends, speaking of Me-

lacha during the period of "Tosefet Shabbat" – the time one vol-

untarily added onto Shabbat – is analogous to the Gemara’s

case about speaking of traveling outside the city. Since there is

a permissible way of performing the given act, it is permissible

to speak about it on Shabbat. Hence, the Rashba concludes, if

one accepted Shabbat early he may ask his fellow, who has not

yet accepted Shabbat, to perform Melacha on his behalf. For

example, if after the early Minyan on Friday evening a person

realized that he had forgotten something in his car, he may ask

somebody who has not yet accepted Shabbat to retrieve the

item from the car and bring it to his home. Summary: A person

who accepted Shabbat early, before sundown, may ask some-

body who has not yet accepted Shabbat to perform Melacha on

his behalf.
