Aufgabe II Leseverstehen

II A. True / false / not in the text:

Seasonal jobs for the summer

The summer season is just around the corner and as part of our Get Britain Working campaign we have found 14,303 seasonal vacancies. These are in all sorts of areas, from music festivals to sporting events, hotels and holiday camps. Although many of these are temporary posts, if you do a good job it could lead to something more permanent.

No one knows better than Lucy Rawlings how a summer job can change your life. Lucy is now 17 months into her dream job as a sales executive at Warwick Castle – all thanks to a series of summer jobs. “I was in my first year at university studying English and communications and in need of a job,” says Lucy, 22. “I live near Warwick Castle and grew up visiting it so it made sense to start looking there.” Being local, she knew it was a great place to work and heard through friends that it was great fun, too. She says: “I simply went online, clicked on seasonal employment and applied.”

Lucy was called in to an assessment centre with other candidates. She says: “It was great fun. We were asked to do challenges and had a short interview. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m a real people person so it was perfect.” Within the week, Lucy was given a job. “I was thrilled,” she says.

“The induction day came soon after, where you get to discover how it all works behind the scenes.” That summer was spent working in the restaurants. “It was amazing fun and it helped that I was working with like-minded people full of energy,” she says.

For Lucy it was no problem to re-apply for the second and third summers while still at university. She says: “In my final summer I stayed on and heard that a full-time post had come up in sales.” She applied through parent company Merlin Entertainments. “I was delighted when I got the job,” she says. “It was key that they knew they could always count on me.”

Since then Lucy has been trained in all the skills required for her job, which involves arranging for wedding and corporate clients to rent the castle. She adds: “The great thing is that I know I have all the training opportunities here to further my career throughout the group. That summer job paid off big time!”

II B. Multiple Choice: Auf Wiedersehen to unemployment

Step 1: Read the text.

Germany looks to the UK and other European countries to fill skills gaps

Youth unemployment is the biggest problem facing Europe. More than 5.6 million under-25s are out of work in the European Union and ‘Generation Jobless’ is a reality in the UK, which is hard to bear. Nearly 1million young people under the age of 25 are out of work here, or more than one in every five.

The French, German and Italian governments have started to do something about this dramatic situation. Mr. Hollande, French prime minister, said: “These millions of unemployed young people will forever be holding our governments responsible for their bad situation and hopeless future.”

The German government is the only country that has a different problem. At 7.5 per cent, Germany’s youth unemployment rate is very low compared to the youth unemployment rate in the UK, and seems very small when one looks at the terrifying levels in some southern European nations. Germany has the problem of being in need of skilled workers for the future. It currently has 33,000 unfilled apprenticeships and faces a growing skills shortage because of its ageing population. This has caused Germany to look overseas, including to the UK, in order to recruit workers to fill the gap.

The German government has begun offering attractive apprenticeship packages to young British people, with free language lessons and pay of 818 € a month after tax (around £700).The programme is being marketed as “Germany All-Inclusive” and the hope is that some of the talented young British people coming to serve their apprenticeship in Frankfurt or Dusseldorf will stay, filling the German skills gap.

German companies including BMW and BASF have also started recruiting young unemployed Spaniards, and are considering expanding the programme to Italy and Greece.

Although initiatives like these offer great opportunities to young people concerned, it could provoke fears that Germany is trying to get the most talented young people, and take them away from their home countries.

However the numbers of young people leaving Britain at this stage are far too small to create a serious hole in the UK’s skills base. And in any case, many of those who serve time in Germany will come back to Britain with their skills improved.

Page 9: Mittlerer Schulabschluss Schuljahr 2013/2014 Englisch · 2014-06-25 · Jobless’ is a reality in the UK, which is hard to bear. Nearly 1million young people under the age of 25

Another problem is that years before the financial crisis smart young people were dominated by the attractions of good jobs in banking. Many of the cleverest young British people used to start working in financial services: ”A large number of them, instead of wanting to become engineers or scientists or musicians, wanted to go and work in the City of London. Why? Because they wanted to make a lot of money.” Adam Marshall, of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:” The Germans are putting together a very attractive package. They have always planned for the future when training young people for good careers... We need to develop a similarly strong and high-quality system. There is still a long way before we reach German standards. This should let us make sure we hang on to our young people.”
