DEADLINES . DEADLINES . DEADLINES!Very much has happened since wesaw some of you a year ago. Aftergetting back to Hong Kong, the usualafter furlough calching-up had to betaken care of, as well as jiunpingright into Bible College duties. Ontop of that, several people were justwaiting for me to return to help themson out their computer problems.

Within a month of returning, we visited our contact inPanYu, China, and caught up with what his group isdoing. We also had to help'Tvith Yuk Chi's mother, who had been in the hospital for heart bypass surgeryjust before ou r return. Due to the condition of herarterial walls, the bypass could not be completed. Shehas more or less recovered, bu t he r heart and arteriesare not in very good shape. Yuk Chi's fatlier has alsohad a number of asthma/emphysema attacks whichhave weakened his hcaltli still fiirther. Both herparents are over 70. Her father will ret ire in Januarybecause the gold shop he works at is in a building thatwill be torn down. That should be helptul to us,though, since Aietheia likes to go with him outside toplay.

The inflamed lesions that started on Light's Shins inSeptember '94 have mostly gone away, but the placeswhere some of them were are still somewhat painilil tothe touch.

Other ChangesIn February Yuk Chi started getting those house-boundmother blues. She has always been one to be out andactive, working with people to serve the Lord So, shebegan searching the job ads for a suitable position. After several inquiries at some schools, she finallyfoimd an opening in April at Far East BroadcastingCompany, doing much the same thing that she hadbriefly done for the Bible College back in 1986. She isa program script writer and sometimes producer forprograms that are beamed to China.

In March we discovered that Light waspregnant again! That is one of the mainreasons hardly anyone has heard from usthis year. Preparing room for a second childin our lives and in our house has been quitet ime consuming. So, since it has been morethan 9 months, you will want to know thaton November 6, Light gave birth to a 7.5pk>und baby boy. He has brown hair with atint of red to it and a typical red-head's fair

twentyminutes away. They allow fathers to be presentat birth, but only during those moments of actualdelivery. I returnedhome after admitting Light at 9:30pm. She began labor at 1 am and called me at 1;15.By the time 1 got back down there and tlie nuise let mein, it was almost loo late! By 1:42 it was all over butthe shouting. After much deliberation, we havedecided on the name, Christopher Promise. HisChinese name will be, Mok Gei Lok. He is eatingwell and growing like topsy; he is already over 9pounds and ready for his first inoculation. Alelheia hasnot shown too manysigns of jealousy...yel. but she hasbeen a bit less cooperative lately. She, too, is gu)\\'ingrapidly, aiid gelling into everything as only a veiycurious two year old can. She will be enteringplayschool kindergarten in September '96. Light willreturn to work o n De cembe r 19 .

Apparently, news of China ajul HongA Kong affairs have not been widely^ reported in the Slates. The matter of

Harry Wu received as much attention asit did because il served ihe U.S. foreignpolicy and i)oIilieal goals of the |)eople in ollice. I'he

pressure il supposedly applied to China to aller herhuman rights policies and actions really did very little.Other than the ver>' materialistic view of Man (viaMarx and Roseau), the main problem is that ihenational government does not really control the localgovernment. A case in point; Recently, the housechurches in a certain village in China have beenregularly raided and persecuted. Meanwhile, thechurches in a village less than five miles away havebeen free to do as ihey wish without trouble.fhis fall, Governor CHiris Palten pushed throughthe "democratic" election of a new, representativeLegislative Council (LegCo). The Basic Lawagreement between Britain and China that isessentially Hong Kong's future constitution does notprovide for an elected LegCo. To have an electedl .egCo whose members are not appointed by theGovernor now, and by C'hina later, is unacceptable toChina. To have a LegCo that feels empowered tocriticize and contradict the Governor (as it has alreadydone), is intolerable. China has already cleajly slatedthat there will be no "tliroiigh train" for the presentlyelected members of LegCo afler June 1997. Thesituation has gotten so bad thai a high-ranking ( hinescofficial recently made a public si)eech during which lie

refeired to Mr. Patten by several unsavory epithets. But the (tovemor got his own back when he protestedthe name calling without replying in kind, thus gainingsome "face". In the next 550"^ days anything canhap(>en, and probably will. But Jesus is still Lord ofall! i While we were in the States last fall, the.. members ofMongkok Church kept rightLJ1 working. As a result, last Decemberthey immersed six more people into JesusChrist for the remission of their sins. This past springthe 1.Old added four more. In May elder missionaries

Bill and Me lb a Ree s r et ir ed f rom th e field to th e State."They are doing fine in their new location, surroundedby many old friends. In July we were briefly visited byformer missionaries Gary and Joyce Anderson withsome members of their church. In September Lightand 1 decided that, since the church was now fairlystable in purpose, vision, and doctrine, we would shiftour church activities to her old Wan Chai church.(.'ertain elements there are tending toward a moreliberal view of purpose and doctrine than the church'sfounders had.

fhe Bible College is doing fine, as fara s s tu de nt i nv ol vement is concerned. We almost broke our enrol lmentrecord, but we did not have enoughroom for them . Two members fromthe Mongkok Church are nowregularly taking classes. One of them

is doing so in order to improve his ability to be achurch leader. I'he other just wants to increase hisknowledge and understanding of God and His word, ihi)ugh he also wants to improve himself for ministry. We have also had many new students from varioussources. One of them is from the Little F lock, thegroup of churches founded by Watchman Nee. Hereally knows his Bible, but his theologicalunderstanding is traditional denomi^national . Someother students have come a result of Light posting andproclaiming the curriculum at her office. Q One ofour students, Taam Siu Jung, has taken about everylanguage course we have, as well as many others. Heis a High School English teacher. He also now teachesour begimiing Greek classes, as well as conducts Greekclasses with live groups in China. Why should theChinese study Greek? Consider the mess the NIVtranslators made of Ps 51:5, which is also very close tothe standard Chinese version. (Hint: compare with theKJV. which represents the Hebrew andLXK.) Anotherstudent, Liu Kam Tong, aheady graduated, is stillworking for a local church, He demanded that theyhonor llieir promise to let him have weekly time off to

go into China. He is now iheir Tuesday night preacher. His wife is iinishing her studies and should graduatehis fall. She has also just volunteered to help me withhe bookkeeping. One of our diehard students, Leewok Man, hangs around as much as possible in orderto help out in any way possible. Normally, he teachesmath and Calculus to High School students. WinniePak, a graduate who married a preacher from aainland house church, is still living and working hardfor the I^rd in the PRC. Recently, a colleague wasarrested and, when asked, gave many names andaddresses of believers and meeting places. So far, othing has come of this foolishness. (PTL!)Meanwhile, the college's finances are doingabout as usual. The Lord has blessed u^ with justenough to meet our expenses, and little else. Our mainources of income are from tuition fees, donationsfrom the Lord I^eading Church, who uses our premisesn weekends, contributions from a coupleissionaries, and a few, infrequent, surpriseontributions. But we still manage to do quite a lotith what He provides.

Causes for Pra ise and PrayerWe give thanks for our safe return to Hong Kongafter furlough. We also are thankftil that wewere able to visit with so many of you, and thatyou were able to meet Light and Aletheia. We praise God for the many opportunities Hegave us on frirlough to minister and share aboutthe needs ofHong Kong.^ We give thanks and praise to Jesus for the newlittle life, Cliristopher Promise, He has given us.Please pray with us that both he and Aletheiawill fulfill their namesakes.Pray that as Light returns to work, both of us willbe given enough strength and vitality to achievethe tasks set before us. I, of course, will be athome tending the small fiy! Pray for thehealth of our whole family. Pray also thatAletheia will not be too jealous ofChristopher. We give thanks and praise to Jesus for yourgenerosity in supporting us with prayers, love, and finances. Tlirougli her job, Light and I reachout to literally millions. Those of you whosupport us will share in the results of our elforts!Pray for Liglit in the coming year. Her jobrequires her to preach at least 10 times in thecoming year at various churches to share aboutFEBC's ministry. Pray also that we will havemore speaking opportunities to share about theBible College ministry. This is another reason

we decided to leave the Mongkok Church, to bef re er t o do this.Pray for Bob Kraft, our contact in PanYu. Praythat God will grant him more wisdom in settingup an evangelical training center for locals andforeign believers. Pray also for his goal ofeventually reaching China's top leaders with thegospel. He already plays tennis (formerly #14 inthe world) with the local senior leaders andbusinessmen in his district. Please pray for Light's mother to want to give upsmoking and horse racing. Aletheia has alreadymimicked her smoking. With her heart andarterial condition, smoking, and eating salty andoily foods as she does, is not good.We give thanks that Light 's brother upgraded hiscomputer and gave us his old '486 motherboard, fhis allowed me to upgrade the College's twocomputers to '386 status. With rapidly fallingprices and people upgrading their systems, I wasable to buy some used, high-capacity disk drivesfor very little money. Please pray that we will find the most suitablekindergarten for Aletheia to attend. In HongKong, this can greatly affect where she goes toPrimary School, and subsequently High Schooland University. Kindergarten will cost betweenUS$100-$200 per month.

FinancesThanks to God's graciousness and your support, and1jght's new job, we currently aboimd. By God's grace,I was able to invest a part of our surplus this past year, resulting in a 33% increase on the investment. Wepresently have around US$20,000 in the Statesidemission accounts and here in Hong Kong. That puts usabout a year ahead of ourselves. Thankfully, the birthofChristopher was only about US$40. Even ifwe hadneeded to pay the full, unsubsidized amount, it stillwould have been less than hal fofAletheia's $3000.

lliough 1 do not yet have the exact figuresworked out for *94 and '95, I est imate that, we havespent around US$15-$20,000 ^h year, including thetiirlough travel and health expenses in '94. Yourdonations have about equaled our expenses during thesame period, fiopefully, 1 will have a more completereport in the next newsletter.
