Keine Panik!

Foreword

Dear Reader,

In this catalogue we present our new publications for the year 2019 alongside some highlights from our earlier publications. Of course, the latter originally started out as new publications and it’s thanks to the continued interest and support from music teachers, students, and performers like you that they managed to achieve best-seller status. For decades Editio Musica Budapest has strived to uphold the same high standard of commitment, expertise, and enthusiasm in preparing its editions. We introduce our newest scores here in the hopes that years later they may also appear as highlights beside the new publications of tomorrow.

Introduction to Pedaling fills an essential niche in the e isting repertoire b enabling learners to improve their mastery of both the musical function and technique of pedaling.

The Bartók Performing Editions series has further expanded: Bartók’s detailed performance notes and markings for J.S. Bach’s famous work The Well-Tempered Clavier can be seen in two volumes.

The penultimate volume of the New Liszt Edition series for solo piano has arrived, as has the third volume of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition.

Pulling inspiration from Bach, composer Péter Wolf has created 24 character pieces for solo piano entitled Wolf-temperiertes Klavier which span across many colors and moods with a musical aesthetic most characteristic to that of Romanticism.

A Panorama of Songs ulfills a want that has been elt or eca es he series brings a breath of fresh air and new works to the conventional Lied repertoire.

In addition to our new publications, we would like to draw attention to a number of updated, mo erni e publications particular significance is the e pan e an re ise e ition o Zoltán Kodály’s Choral Works for Mixed Voices, which contains newly set, easily-legible scores and six new works which up until now have not appeared within any collection. We are please to o er it in both paperbac an cloth boun ersions

We invite you to read on, discover our new publications, and rediscover our highlights.

Commissioned by the music publisher Rózsavölgyi & Co., Béla Bartók and Sándor Reschofsky assembled their Piano Method for beginners, which was first published in 1913. Pianist and composer Reschofsky devised the framework and wrote the exercises for Piano Method, while Bartók composed 48 short performance pieces on the basis of the exercises.

Ever since its appearance, many teachers have made successful use of Piano Method by Reschofsky and Bartók in the early years of instrumental music education. This new edition merges and replaces our earlier ones in Hungarian with German, English, and French (EMBZ4636, EMBZ5220, EMBZ6179).

Fél- és egész hang elmélete Whole tones and semitones [Whole-steps and half-steps]

A legkisebb hangtávolságot két egymáshoz legközelebb eső hang adja; a neve: félhang. Pl.: h – c.

The distance between any two notes is an interval. The smallest interval is that between two adjacent notes: this is called a semitone [half step], e.g. B – C. These are the two closest piano-keys. In the same way if a black key follows a white, or a white key a black, the two again form a semitone, e.g. A – B flat, or C sharp – D (there is no note, no key between them). A whole tone consists of two semitones; here we skip a note, e.g. when playing C – D, we omit C sharp ; C sharp – D sharp, D is omitted; E flat – F, E is omitted.

Exercise: The pupil should write down and learn whole tones and semitones.

This piano method by the French music teacher Charles-Louis Hanon (1819–1900) appeared in 1874. Almost a century and a half later, it remains among the most popular systems of piano tuition all around the world, and Hanon’s name has become generic for systematic instrumental methods, even in types of popular music.

6PianoMETHODS AND STUDIES

Introduction to PedalingCompiled and edited by Ágnes Lakos

Pedaling is a fundamental part of expressive piano playing. But proper pedaling skills are not easy to acquire. Thus, it is important that piano students become acquainted with the use of the three pedals as early as possible. The stopgap Introduction to Pedaling is a collection of pieces adapted to all levels of manual dexterity, enabling learners to improve their mastery of both the musical function and technique of pedaling. The volume contains both individual and joint studies for the three pedals of modern pianos.

In addition to ten selected pieces from Samuil Maykapar’s Twenty Pedal Preludes (1937), Introduction to Pedaling includes keyboard music from four centuries, ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach to contemporary Hungarian composers. Pupils can thus encounter varying pedal marks from diff erent periods. Of course, not all composers featured in the collection marked pedal-ing ; in such cases, pedal signs were added by the editor. It is a recurrent question of interpretation whether pedals may be used in the music of earlier masters. The sound of the modern piano is far less vibrant and rich in overtones than that of the period instruments — thus, it is not Bach’s music that necessitates pedaling so much as the piano itself.

The Bartók Performing EditionsBartók taught piano at the Music Academy in Budapest from 1907 to 1934. In his fi rst years as a professor the Budapest music publishers Rozsnyai and Rózsavölgyi commissioned him to prepare so-called instructive editions ( including suggestions, commentaries and fi ngerings for the performer ) of several classics of the piano repertoire, altogether more than two thousand pages of music. Bartók’s editing refl ects contemporary ideas about performance, but is for the most part more detailed and elaborate than in other similar instructive editions at the turn of the century.

György Orbán ( born 1947 ) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he “loves splashing about in tonality,” which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he fi nds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifi cally intended for beginners.

He composed close to 70 short children’s pieces for Ágnes Lakos’s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (EMBZ14749–14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (EMBZ14742). The New Bell includes a further 19 piano pieces for beginners.

Among these compositions there are several pieces for three or four hands, which the beginner can play to-gether with the teacher or with another pupil. In these pieces we have marked the learner’s part with a little child’s head. You can listen to all the compositions on our website.

Giraffe PianoEssential Sonatinas for Music Education

Selected and edited by József Sármai

Sonatinas form a vital part of the teaching material for beginner and intermediate piano students. Compared to the great classic piano sonatas, they are technically and musically simpler and typi-cally shorter. However, they still convey the basic elements of Classical style: the relation of melody to accompaniment, articulation, stylistically authentic playing, and correct interpretation. For the two volumes of Giraffe Piano, the most favored and instructive of the sonatinas have been chosen. Volume 1 contains simpler pieces and Volume 2 ones of moderate difficulty.

Lajos Papp (1935–2019)

The Golden Key Sixteen little piano pieces for beginners ( After a story by the brothers Grimm )

The Hungarian composer and piano teacher wrote a number of highly popular educational and performance pieces for children.

This unusual, incomplete story, The Golden Key, has inspired an unusu-al musical work: the young players can make up titles for the last eight pieces, and they are also encouraged to note down their thoughts and feelings inspired by the music, or express them in drawings, in the score.

COMPLETE EDITION

Franz Liszt

Piano Concerto in A major(version for piano solo) and other works

Edited by Adrienne Kaczmarczyk

Supplementary Volume 15 of the New Liszt Edition contains both earlier versions of published works and also several works that remained as manuscript. The most extensive work in this volume is the earliest known draft of the Piano Concerto in A major (written in 1839 for solo piano). Not only does the draft give insight into the process of the work’s genesis, but it also holds its own as a work for piano solo. Additionally, the volume contains several shorter works, such as a piano transcrip-tion of Robert Schumann’s Lied Widmung, which shows how original Liszt’s interpretations were, and also two early drafts of the Zweite Elegie dedicated to Lina Ramann (a former pupil of Liszt’s and his fi rst biogra pher). The latter have been published in facsimile.

Supplementary Volume 15 features a detailed preface in German, English and Hungarian, which reveals valuable details on each work. The cloth-bound version also has critical notes in English.

COMPLETE EDITION

Béla Bartók

Works for Piano 1914–1920Edited by László Somfai

The third volume in the Complete Edition contains Bartók’s works for piano solo composed between 1914 and 1920. Bartók’s pianistic oeuvre from the years of World War I span a broadly varied spec-trum; in addition to simple arrangements of folk music (15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, Sonatina ) and original pieces for the concert podium (Suite, op. 14), we find Bartók’s audaciously innovative Etudes (op. 18) inspired by Liszt, as well as Improvisations (op. 20), perhaps his most abstract and original folk music adaptations.

The appendix of the volume reproduces movements originally intended for, but eventually discarded from, Suite and 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, as well as all original sources for the folk-inspired pieces. The introductory essays in English, Hungarian, and German not only explore the genesis and reception of the works more thoroughly than ever before, but also orient the reader in issues of notation and performance. The critical commentary presents all manuscript and print sources of the works in detail (including folk music sources), it documents the compositional processes and surveys the range of textual variants and problems.

The manuscript gives a glimpse into Kurtág’s workshop from the viewpoint of both performers and musicologists. The former can understand more from Kurtág’s handwriting about the composer’s intentions than from the printed score. The musicologists, however, can study the historical origins of the works: some works can be found here in more than one version, others appear in a version different from the printed score.

The publication is accompanied by a booklet and a CD supplement. The booklet contains Kocsis’s own personal preface, as well as András Wilheim’s essay providing information about the collection and the pieces contained therein. On the CD we hear 11 works performed by Kocsis, from a recording made in 1982 which has not previously been commercially issued.

This edition has been published for György Kurtág’s 90th birthday in 2016.

Péter Wolf

Wolf-temperiertes KlavierPéter Wolf ( a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest ) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distin-guished performers ; these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work’s likeness to Bach is not limited to its title — the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. Of the twenty-four character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works.

In the preface to this publication, Wolf off ers the following insights : “I think I managed to fi nd ex-pressive titles. The fi rst piece, Epiclesis ( a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support ), was heard from above : I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I fi nally fi nished inscribing the pitches of Bach’s name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.”

Wolf-temperiertes Klavier is recommended for advanced pianists who wish to push the boundaries between musical genres, as well as classical musicians interested in the harmonic language of jazz.

Frigyes Sándor – Pál Járdányi – Endre Szervánszky

Violin TutorFrigyes Sándor (1905–1979), violinist, teacher and conductor. His six-volume Violin tutor was published between 1949 and 1959, and has remained popular ever since. One reason for its popularity — in addition to its methodological concept — may be the fact that from the very beginning learners are given high quality musical material on which to master the basic elements of violin playing. The musical material in the volumes was written specifically for this tutor by Pál Járdányi and Endre Szervánszky ; apart from pieces designed for pedagogical purposes it includes a wealth of folk tunes ( Hungarian and other European folk melodies ) graded to suit each level of difficulty, and excerpts representing different periods in the history of music.

Let’s Take the Stage ! Easy repertoire pieces for young violinists with CD

Selected, transcribed and edited by András Soós

It’s an unforgettable experience to go on stage for the first time and win applause with your play-ing. This album encourages children to make a first appearance and gives effective help in doing so. It brings together pieces that can earn real success: easy arrangements of favorite works by Dow-land, Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Weber, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Anton Rubinstein and Brahms.

The CD enclosed with the publication includes recordings of the piano accompaniment for each piece and a full performance by noted Hungarian musicians. So the disc makes practice at home eas-ier and gives assistance with performance style as well. The publication offers numerous pieces of advice to young violinists, including: how to get ready for a concert, how to control stage fright, and how to be confident on stage. In addition, some charming illustrations by Edit Szalma are included.

REPERTOIRE PIECES FOR STUDENTS

Keine Panik!

Béla Bartók planned in 1939 to arrange for two violins and three violins his choral works ( for equal voices ). He was prevented from doing this by his early death. At the request of the Editio Musica Budapest, Endre Szervánszky has undertaken this task in 1971. His arrangements, which we are bringing out in two volumes, offer valuable material both to violin teaching and group music-making.

44 Duets for two violas

From the 44 Violin Duets transcribed and fingering added by Donald Maurice and Claudine Bigelow

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duets in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathi-an Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The viola transcriptions follow Bartók’s original faithfully.

MUSIC FOR BEGINNERS

Editio Musica Budapest

Music for Beginners was launched 50 years ago in the summer of 1969. The aim was to compile a varied and high-standard repertoire covering music from the ear-liest centuries to contemporary com positions for mu-sic school students to be played in the fi rst 3-4 years of instrument learning. The series has proved extremely successful as is indicated by the fact that 55 volumes have been published. The popularity of Music for Be-ginners has not dimin ished in recent years, and there is demand for the majority of volumes in Hungary and abroad. The secret of the series’ success lies primarily in the selection of compositions. The contents of all volumes have been compiled by accomplished music teachers choosing high-standard works that can easily be played by the given instrument. Outstanding Hun-garian composers have also been asked to write new pieces.

The volumes in the Music for Beginners series current-ly include all the instruments taught in music schools. Moreover, they have been published for various cham-ber music settings as well. The value of the series is increased by the unique, attractive illustrations of

János Kass. They not only appear on the volume cov-ers but are sometimes also featured in the scores.

The renewal of Music for Beginners started on the occasion of the series’ 45th birthday. Yet only the ap-pearance is changing, not the contents. The volumes are receiving new covers preserving János Kass’ draw-ings. Within the series three groups have been formed that are diff erentiated by the color of the covers: vol-umes for solo instruments ( with or without piano ac-companiment ) are RED, those for duos of the same instruments are GREEN, and BLUE signifi es cham-ber music for diff erent instruments. Certain volume titles have also been changed so that they refl ect the multiple scoring options of the pieces included. On the following pages all scoring options are indicated for each volume.

With the renewal of the series we would also like to point out that Music for Beginners can be eff ectively used not only in teaching instruments but in chamber music education as well. Additionally, most of the vol-umes are perfect for at-home music making.

Violoncello ABC This is one of the most successful volumes in the series. Árpád Pejtsik’s ABC does not seek to alter or influence teachers’ ideas about methodology, it simply offers colourful, attractive musical material, clearly grouped, which enables teachers to use the pieces in whatever order they wish.

The musical material consists of children’s songs, folk songs and duets and pieces with piano accom-paniment ranging from musical memories of the Middle Ages to music of the present century. The duets are intended to enable pupil and teacher to make music together regularly; the cello trios at the end of the volume allow learners to play chamber music together.

Grade: Very easyLanguage: English, German, HungarianNumber of pages: 116Order no.: EMBZ14177

Violoncello Method 2 It is a continuation of the Violoncello ABC. The basic principle remains unchanged: in addition to the most necessary minimum of technical studies, it offers varied, attractive musical material, grouped in a clear, comprehensible manner. The various chapters contain both simpler and more demanding works, so the teacher can select teaching material to suit students’ abilities. Many of the pieces are in two parts or have piano accompaniment, so that by making music together, teacher and pupil can make lessons a musical experience rather than a duty.

REPERTOIRE PIECES

Béla Bartók

33 Duets for two violoncellos

From the 44 Violin Duets transcribed and fingering added by Árpád Pejtsik

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duets in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Car-pathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The transcription follows Bartók's original faithfully. The publication includes fingerings added by the editor.

The extensive range of the cello makes it possible for three or four cellos played in different registers to create the sound of genuine chamber music.

At first this possibility was utilized by cellist-composers, but in the 19th century transcriptions for several cellos began to be produced, a tradition continued by the editor of this chamber music series, the cello teacher Árpád Pejtsik, known worldwide for his pedagogical publications. (Most of the transcriptions in the volumes of this series are his own work.) Since the register of the cello corresponds roughly to that of the singing voice, from low bass to coloratura soprano, many of the pieces are transcriptions of choral works.

Works have been selected from widely differing periods of music history, the editor’s aim being to provide a collection of colourful, varied material for cellists to play. Some of the cello parts are easy to play, so that less proficient players can also take part in the shared music-making.

Guitar Tutor I–III

The first three volumes of this guitar tutor have been completely revised. In the decades since the first edition, the musical interests of our students and their practice possibilities have changed. To adapt to this, we have partly expanded and partly reduced the musical and technical material of the tutor.

We have increased the number of recital pieces at all levels of difficulty, so that our students can spend longer on a varied repertoire at their respective level. We have first of all selected works from the Viennese classics for this purpose but have also enriched the repertoire of the tutor with numerous pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

In volumes I and II of the tutor we have given Hungarian folk songs and children’s songs a significant amount of space. In the course of revision, we have expanded the material of these two volumes with simple arrangements of folk songs, nursery rhymes and flower songs, and we have provided very easy, but valuable material for instrumental study in particular for children aged between 6 and 10. We have also expanded the chamber music material to be found at the end of the volumes, because we believe that playing music together is the best way to make instrumental study a lasting experience for our students. The parts are relatively simple, so the works provide a musical experi-ence almost immediately.

METHODS AND STUDIES

Flute

Selected Studies for FlutesEdited by Vilmos Bántai and Gábor Kovács

The three volumes contain 176 studies by 25 composers. The selection was made according to tech-nical usefulness and musical value. The studies follow in order of the grade of difficulty and are grouped around certain problems. All three volumes can be applied as supplementary material to any flute tutor. Their use should be determined by the progress of the student and not by the class he attends. We recommend the first volume (EMBZ8591) for beginners, the second (EMBZ8592) one for advanced students on the lower level, the third (EMBZ8593) for intermediate students.

Zoltán JeneyFlute Tutor“In this flute tutor we have tried to allocate the musical and technical content in such a way as to make the path of development smooth and obstacle-free for beginners. Our aim is that the begin-ner should first play on his instrument in his musical native language, that of Hungarian folk music. For this reason the majority of the exercises are folk melodies or compositions created in the spirit of folk song. In addition to Hungarian folk music, the volume also contains folk music from other countries, and classical music. Of etudes in the traditional sense of the word we have included only as much as was absolutely essential...” Zoltán Jeney

Béla Bartók

13 Easy Pieces C

Transcribed by Vilmos Bántai and Éva Bántainé Sipos

This album contains arrangements of piano pieces written by Béla Bartók (1881–1945) in his youth for piano pupils ( Ten Easy Piano Pieces, For Children, The First Term at the Piano ). Most are arrangements of Hungarian or Slovak folk songs, while the rest are based on the com-poser’s own melodies. A piano accompaniment for each piece and a full performance by noted Hungarian musicians is provided on the accompa-nying CD to facilitate practice at home and help in developing a suitably styled performance of Bartók’s music.

Zoltán Kodály

Children’s Dances

Arranged by Vilmos Bántai and Éva Bántai-Sipos

Zoltán Kodály composed few works for piano solo ; between 1918 and the end of World War II, he wrote none. He even refused the request of Universal Edition in 1934, which would have commis-sioned him to write easy pedagogical studies for piano. It is, however, not impossible that this approach inspired his educational piano compositions in 1945 and 1946. The twelve-piece cycle of Children’s Dances was not written for novice pianists. The melodies of the pieces reflect the char-acteristics of Hungarian folk dance tunes, while their setting even evokes the sound of original folk instruments commonly used for accompaniment.

Vilmos Bántai and Éva Bántai-Sipos selected eight of the Children’s Dances to transcribe for flute and piano. In these transcriptions, recommended for the primary music school students, the flute is undoubtedly featured as a melodic instrument accompanied by the piano, which sometimes plays a supporting role and other times shares equal significance with the flute.

Béla Bartók

Duets for recorders from the Children’s and Female Choruses

Transcribed and edited by Márton Kerékfy

The Children’s and Female Choruses were composed in a single burst of creative activity at the ze-nith of Bartók’s career, in the summer of 1935, between such masterpieces as the String Quartet No. 5 and the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. These short choral pieces are based on folk texts that Bartók further polished and stylized. The music, however, is wholly the composer’s own, although it frequently includes motifs, rhythmic formulas and line structures reminiscent of Hungarian folk songs. Both editions contain nine of the two-part pieces of the set, transcribed idio-matically but faithfully for descant and treble recorders, respectively.

I Learn to Play the Clarinet“The two volumes of I Learn to Play the Clarinet (EMBZ12282 and EMBZ13291) have been written for beginners and contain the material for the first 3-4 years. It has been avoided to arrange the material according to yearly divisions for several reasons. On one hand the rate of progress depends on the pupil’s aptness, diligence, age and musical pre-education, so a strictly handled curriculum could be either too small or too great a task for the pupil. On the other hand by using this method it may be easier achieved that quality replace quantity.” Béla Kovács

Persistent Dreamsfor solo clarinet

“I wrote my solo clarinet piece Persistent Dreams in 1991 before my ‘Opus 1’ Lightshadow-trem-bling, inspired by Salvador Dalí’s painting La persistència de la memòria. The musical equivalent of the infamous melting clocks is like a convolvulus made of notes moving between various overtone systems, interrupted here and there by short chromatic outbreaks. Although it recurs in various forms, in its variations it portrays the immutability and persistence of time and memory.”

The volumes in this new series contain duos, trios and quartets, their degree of diffi culty ranging from easy through intermediate to advanced. Every piece is a transcription or an arrangement, since in editing the volumes our primary concern was to provide a collection of valuable and interesting compositions,

as freely variable as possible as regards instrumen-tation, for music school students and also for adults who make music for their own pleasure. The range and pitch of the parts enable the works to be per-formed on any required or possible combination of the given instruments.

A Panorama of SongsEasy songs of four centuries in six languages

A Panorama of Songs fi lls a want that has been felt for decades. A selection of songs in six European languages from the 16th to the mid-20th century encompassing every musical period, it seeks to help beginner-level students of voice teachers and répétiteurs, and foremost the singers themselves. The series brings a breath of fresh air and new works to the conventional Lied repertoire, truly off ering a new panorama. Using the means of modern technology it also provides immense help in learning and performing the songs.

The three volumes of the series are arranged by level of diffi culty, and all of them are available for high and low voices (“a” volumes for high voices, “b” volumes for low voices). Each volume is a complete unit in itself, including all six languages (English, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish) and presenting a cross-section of styles from the early Baroque to the 20th century. Interpretation of the songs is facilitated by literal English and Hungarian translations of their texts, and the reading of the Cyrillic script is assisted by transliteration (again in English and Hungarian). Ornamentation suggestions for the performance of the Baroque works are also included.

The printed music is accompanied by additional useful material to help the learning process, available online at www.emb.hu/downloads. The website contains the piano accompaniments of all of the songs, as well as all the original texts recited by native speakers.

Mindben megtalálható mind a hat nyelv (angol, francia, német, olasz, orosz, spanyol), és mindegyik teljes keresztmetszetet ad a kora barokk stílustól a 20. századig. A dalok értelmezését a szövegek angol és magyar nyelvű nyersfordítása segíti, a cirill betűk olvasását pedig fonetikus átírás könnyíti. A barokk művek előadásához díszítési javaslatokat is közölnek a kiadványok.

A nyomtatott kötetekhez további hasznos, a tanulás folyamatát segítő anyagok csatlakoznak a www.emb.hu/downloads oldalon. A hat nyelv alapvető kiejtési szabályai ugyanitt szintén letölthetők.

Dr. Hegedüs Gönczy Katalin a budapesti Járdányi Pál Zeneiskola korrepetitora.
