Paralympic Games are the ultimate highlight in the lives of sportsmen and women. Belonging to the world’s best and competing against them is one aspect. The other is having the opportunity to meet people from a multitude of countries, to get to know them and to enjoy their company in peace and friendship.

In our present times, an era full of conflicts, of threats and ad-versity, of wars and catastrophes and in view of the hundreds of thousands of refugees – in these times it is particularly important that not only young people seek intercultural exchange and foster contacts on the international stage. We also however do not want to forget the sporting importance of these Winter Games. Those that have made it to Pyeong- Chang have already produced outstanding performances, so-mething we hold in high regard. For those that proceed to finish amongst the very best, they will enjoy our greatest admiration. However, we have neither any expectations nor will we an-nounce any unreachable targets. Our wish is that our athletes can, at the right time, summon everything they have learnt and everything they have trained over many years.

May the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, for which there are rightfully concerns, misgivings and criticism, become a sporting festival of peace, joy of life and success. We are travelling to Pyeong- Chang with highly motivated athletes as lying behind us are many years of preparations with a special focus on the Paralympic Games in South Korea. Everybody is eagerly awaiting both the opening ceremony on 9 March and the start of their competitions. The Alpine and Nordic sportsmen and women tested the venues last year and found them to be challenging.

Now they have the chance to excel amongst the world’s best. Just like the curlers who will find perfect facilities in the brand new indoor arena to perform at their best. Within the team, the favourable athlete/coach and team official ratio generates a top backup support for the competitors.

I congratulate all the athletes, coaches and team officials for being nominated for these Paralympic Games. We will send a strong and highly motivated team to South Korea. At the same time, I personally very much hope that the Games will be clean, incidents like at Sochi (Russia) four years ago cannot be allowed to happen ever again. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), but also all the other persons in the teams have a big responsibility for the athletes. Only a fair and manipulation- free win is sustainable and gives one a positive, contented feeling for life.

I wish all the athletes a success-ful and, above all, injury-free Paralympic Games. The whole German Paralympic team will be an excellent ambassador for our country and a role model for people with or without a disability.

The ten days of competition at the Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang from 9 to 18 March 2018 will see a total of about 670 athletes from 45 countries competing for medals in 80 events and six sports.

The competitions will be held in two different venues: at the PyeongChang Mountain Cluster with the Alpensia Biathlon Centre and the Jeongseon Alpine Centre as well as the Gang-neung Coastal Cluster featuring the curling and the ice hockey centre.

Both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be staged in the Paralympic Stadium in Pyeong- Chang, that is not far away from the Alpensia Biathlon Centre and the Paralympic Village. An overview of the two competition venues:

The pentagonal Paralympic Stadium has been designed as an outdoor arena that will be dismantled after the Paralympic Games.

Gangneung is the largest coastal city in the Gangwon-do province. It nestles in the east at the bottom of South Korea’s longest mountain range, the Taebaek Mountains. When choosing the meeting place for athletes and guests during the Olympics, the right location is obviously of upmost importance. Its proximity to nu-merous competition venues was decisive in selecting the Birch Hill Golf Club as the “Deutsches Haus Paralympics 2018” – in the immediate vicinity are the Para-lympic Village and the “Alpensia Resort” whilst the competition venues for Biathlon, cross-coun-try skiing and Para Nordic skiing are also nearby.

The central location was one of the main reasons why the German Olympic Sports Federa-tion (DOSB) and the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) together with the German Sports Marketing (DSM) as the exclusive marketing agency of DOSB and DBS decided to make the Birch Hill Golf Club the “home” for the German sports family – a home that, for the first time, will welcome two other nations during the 2018 Paralympic Games. The delega-tions of Austria and Switzerland will also entertain their guests at the Birch Hill Golf Club. Athletes and guests from three countries will gather under the roof of the “Deutsches Haus Paralympics”, giving it a very special international touch. Named “Alpen-haus” (Alpine House), it conveys a geographical feature linking all three nations.

“The advantages of the location are obvious - any closer is almost impossible,” explained Claudia Wagner, member of the managing board of the Deutsche Sport Marketing before continuing, “The Birch Hill Golf Club also features a flexible large space that gives us

Peong Resort was originally built in 1975 as a recreation centre with ski lifts, cross-country ski tracks and apartment buildings. Situated at 700 metres above sea level, South Korea’s capital Seoul is about 200 kilometres away. The competition venues in Gangneung with the arenas for Para ice hockey and wheelchair curling are about 37 kilometres away.

For the fifth time after 2010 in Vancouver, 2012 in London, 2014 in Sochi and 2016 in Rio, the German Olympic Team and the German Paralympic Team will share a common meeting place. Deutsche Sportmarketing has designed and organized the national Paralympics meeting place in co-operation with the DBS and its partners. They were supported in the planning and execution of the project by co-sponsor Messe Düsseldorf and licensee partner PROPROJEKT and AS+P Albert Speer.

Athletes belonging to the German Paralympic team have been sharing far more than just their passion for sport since 2013 as they have found a common digital home at www.deutsche-paralympische-mann-schaft.de. The website is full of useful facts about the athletes as well as interesting back-ground information about the various sports and the clas-sification system. One of the site’s centrepieces is the online magazine with stories about the sportsmen and women on the German Paralympic team. Another section additionally bundles all the latest news re-lating to elite Paralympic sport, the media centre has videos of a variety of events and selected contents can also be accessed on a barrier-free subpage.

It all started with Sir Ludwig Guttmann. Born in 1899 in Up-per Silesia, the Jewish neurolo-gist was forced to flee National Socialist Germany in 1939 after having been dismissed as head physician in Breslau. On behalf of the British government, Guttmann founded a special clinic for spinal injuries.

Guttmann believed in the power of sport for those with a physical disability. At first, he concentra-ted on war veterans returning with serious injuries that made them wheelchair bound. Even though his focus was on medical rehabilitation, he also believed in the joy of competition to build physical strength and self- confidence.

“Stoke Mandeville Games”precursor to the Paralympic Games

At the same time as the 1948 Olympic Games in London, the “Stoke Mandeville Games” were organised in Aylesbury in the south of England. On the grounds of the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, 16 wheelchair-bound sportsmen competed in an archery contest. From then on the competition was known – thanks to the location – as the “Stoke Mandeville Games” and became the precursor to the Paralympic Games. The first milestone was reached in 1960 when the Games relocated to Rome and were – later – upgra-ded to the first “Paralympic Games” which attracted 400 athletes from 23 nations. First Paralympic Winter Games Örnsköldsvik in 1976

The first Paralympic Winter Games were organised in 1976 when a total of 250 Alpine skiers from 14 nations fought for me-dals in Örnsköldsvik in Sweden. Another milestone was reached in 1994, when 469 athletes from 31 countries competed against each other in Lillehammer (Nor-way) to win one of a total of 399 medals in 133 different events – more than ever before or after. Initially there were only Alpine or Nordic skiing events, Para ice hockey followed in 1994, wheel-chair curling in 2006 and Para snowboard in 2014.

On occasion of the 1988 Games in Seoul, the term “Paralympics” was used for the first time. It is most likely a combination of the words “palsy” (paralysis) and

The number of athletes, participating nations and also spectators at Olympic Summer and Winter Games has grown continuously over the years. In the recent past, general awa-reness of the Games has also increased so that the Para sport now enjoys far greater recogni-tion amongst the public. Despite or rather due to the “Olympic” connection, the Paralympics have long moved out of the shadow of the “big brother” and are generally considered to be the third-biggest sports event apart from Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.

In an incomplete palsy (Paresis), a certain amount of motor skills and/or sensibility remains. A pa-raparesis is an incomplete palsy of the legs. Axillary Nerve Palsy refers to an inherent or acquired injury to the axillary plexus in the armpit that leads to a disorder and sensory loss of arm movement. Due to a cerebral or spinal cord damage. Tetraparesis, also known as Quadriplegia, refers to the loss of the use of all four limbs.

In sport for people with an impairment, especially elite sport, classi-fications play a vital role as the differences in the respective abilities to perform a sport are highly individual and diverse. A comprehen-sive classification system has therefore been devised for the various sports to, on the one hand, ensure fair and equal competition and guarantee the attractiveness of the sport on the other.

The Paralympic classification system has been divided up into ten impairment categories, namely: (1) Impaired muscle power (reduced muscle power, for example paraplegia and tetraplegia (spinal cord injuries))(2) Impaired passive range of movement (range of movement in one or more joints is permanently reduced) (3) Limb deficiency (total or partial absence of bones and joints) (4) Leg length difference (5) Short stature (6) Hypertonia (impairment due to increased muscle tension and the reduced ability of a muscle to stretch) (7) Ataxia (neurological conditions causing a lack of co-ordination of muscle movements) (8) Athetosis (unbalanced, uncontrolled movements) (9) Visual impairment (10) Intellectual impairments

Each Paralympic sport has its own classification system. The systems are developed by the respective international federation governing the sport. If required, the federations update the classifications and decide which impairment types their sport should and can cater for. Only the classification for athletes with a visual impairment is the same for all sports.

In Para Ice Hockey, athletes propel themselves over the ice sitting in a kind of sledge. They have irreparable, obvious impairments of the lower part of the body that lead to a limited range of movement of the lower limbs. The criteria of minimum disability making normal ice skating or playing ice hockey impossible has to be fulfilled. Playing area, equipment and rules are the same as those for ice hockey for athletes without an impairment. To propel the adapted seated sledges and to play the game, players use two short sticks with a spike-end. Playing time is a little shorter, each period lasts 15 minutes.

In Para Alpine skiing, there are sport classes for standing, sitting and visually impaired athletes. Within the three categories, a factoring system is used to make the performances as comparable as possible. The factor influences the time so that the clock runs correspondingly slower for athletes with severe impairments. A division into too many different sport classes is therefore avoided. In addition to the sport classes, there are also the downhill, super-G, super combined, giant slalom and slalom disciplines. A total of 30 gold medals will be awarded (six per discipline and ten per category respectively).

The standing category is divided up into seven sport classes. Athletes with arm and/or leg amputations either compete on one ski with two outriggers (leg amputation) or with one or no poles respectively (arm amputation). Also possible is the use of a prosthesis on two skis (e.g. for athletes with below the knee amputations). In the sitting category, athletes ski down the slope on a seat with a suspension system mounted on a mono-ski and two short outriggers. Athletes with a visual impairment are accompanied by a guide who has to ski in front of the skier up to the last gate giving them verbal instructions or signals.

In Para Nordic skiing, there are sport classes for standing, sitting and visually impaired athletes. Within these three categories, a percentage system is used to make the performances as comparable as possible. The various impairments are therefore converted into time. Consequently, a division into too many different sport classes is avoided. In both biathlon and cross-country skiing, there are three different distances (short, middle and long) so that a total of 36 gold medals are awarded in the individual competitions. There are also two relay events.In the sitting category, athletes with severe impairments to their legs or wheelchair users compete in a special sit-ski. Another special fea-ture is to be found in biathlon for visually impaired athletes as they use rifles equipped with electro-acoustic glasses. Wearing head- phones, the biathletes aim by hearing – the higher the tone, the closer to the centre.

Para snowboarding was only introduced into the Paralympic pro-gramme in Sochi in 2014. Accordingly, the classification system is still being developed. Whilst in Sochi there were solely competitions for athletes with impairments to their legs (SB LL) and therefore only two gold medal events, ten will be awarded in PyeongChang. This is down to, on the one hand, the dividing up of the competitions in the SB LL sports class into several classes. On the other, there are also medal events for athletes with impairments to their upper limbs (SB UL).

Two sports classes: SB LL und SB ULSB LL: Snowboarders in this class have impairments to the function- ing of the legs, like amputations above the ankles or spasticity of the ankle and knee joints as well as muscle weakness in the legs. Athletes with amputations compete with a prosthesis. The class is further divided into LL-1 and LL-2 and evaluated separately.

SB UL: Snowboarders in this class have impairments to the upper limbs which influence the ability to keep their balance.

In wheelchair curling, athletes compete solely in a wheelchair. Common impairments are multiple sclerosis, paraplegia, cerebral palsy or amputations to both legs. Athletes with the lowest degree of impairment can at best only walk short distances. In “chess on the ice”, precision and concentration are of utmost importance. There are hardly any differences to curling for people without impairments. The only exception is that the stone is not delivered directly with the hand but, due to the higher sitting position, using a delivery stick with an extender. There is additionally no sweeping. Another regulation: every team has to consist of at least one woman and at least one man.

Med-tech company Ottobock has been at the heart of the Paralympic Movement for three decades.

Its on-site involvement in the Games began in Seoul in 1988, when four orthotics and prosthetics professionals (O&P professionals) from Australia repurposed a pavilion tent, turning it into a workshop. The basic idea was to provide free technical maintenance and repair services to Paralympic athletes – regardless of the brand of prosthesis, orthosis or wheelchair they used.This allowed the athletes to focus fully on their performance during the competitions.Ottobock has been at every Paralympic Summer and Winter Games ever since. Over the years, the technical support originally provided on a small scale has evolved significantly in terms of workshop size and the number of technicians.

In PyeongChang, the Paralympic Village will be home to the main workshop, which is equipped with all necessary spare parts. At the workshop, an interna-tional technical team of O&P professionals, welders and wheelchair specialists will repair

equipment that the athletes re-quire both for the competitions and in everyday life. To provide assistance as quickly as possible should any technical problems occur during competitions, there will be additional mobile workshop units at the sites of the alpine and nordic competi-tions, as well as at the ice sledge hockey venue.

This year’s technical team con-sists of 23 technicians, who can assist athletes in ten languages.

PyeongChang 2018 marks a very special year for Ottobock: not only is the technical service celebrating its 30th anniversary, but Ottobock is also making a re-turn to the country where it first offered this technical service: South Korea.

The professionalisation of elite sport for people with a disability is advancing all over the world and international performance levels are improving all the time. To remain competitive in sport, athletes require the best possible preparation for the highlights. Essential here is a multifaceted, individual as well as sport-specific funding and support combined with the reconcilability of performance sport with studying or pursuing a career respectively. The concept was developed at the start of 2017 by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministries of Finance and Defence together with the DBS. Currently, three of the most successful winter sports-men and women and 14 of the summer athletes are funded by three federal ministries so that they, with improved financial backing, can concentrate to a large extent on their sport without neglecting their career prospects. This is made possible by monthly funding totalling up to 2500 Euro.

Top TeamThe DBS founded the Top Team in 2004 ahead of the Paralym-pics in Athens. Its members are some of the biggest German hopes for a medal at the Para- lympics. Over the years, the Top Team has developed into a success story. At the last Winter Games in Sochi, four Top Team athletes won 12 of a total of 15 medals, at the Paralympics in Rio they amassed 36 from 57 medals. For PyeongChang in 2018, seven sportsmen and women belong to the Top Team. As for Tokyo 2020, 34 athletes

It is financed by the Sporthilfe premium partner “DFL Stiftung”. The Elite Junior Funding programme is the ideal springboard for talented young-sters on their way to becoming top-class athletes. It includes a long-term career planning. Monthly funding totals 200 Euro to which an annual 500-Euro bonus is added upon fulfilment of an individually determined performance target.

The official mascot of the Paralympic Winter Games is an Asian black bear named Bandabi, who represents deter-mination, courage, bravery and the strong will of Paralympic athletes. The Asian black bear is moreover the regional animal of the Gangwon-do province, home of the host city PyeongChang.

The torch of the Paralympic Win-ter Games measures exactly 700 millimetres, thus representing the altitude of PyeongChang, which is 700 meters above sea level. Its shape and colour reflects Korea’s traditional white porcelain.

The four Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspira-tion and equality as well as the slogan “Passion. Connected” are engraved in Braille on the side of the torch.

In the German lowlands, the Para Nordic skier is often seen on his roller skis, often getting funny looks too. A breath-taking landscape can be enjoyed in the 300 square kilometres Odasean National Park. Situated in the province of Gangwon-do, it was designated a national park in 1975. The park surrounds the five-peaked moun-tain – the highest is Birobong at 1563 metres – of the same name. Among its attractions are the Woljeongsa and Sangwosa temples.

Enjoying a more than 1000-year history, the Woljeongsa Temple in the east of the Odaesan mountain range is the pride of PyeongChang. Located in the valley’s forests, the temple com-

plex consists of about 60 temple buildings and eight hermitages. At the entrance to the complex is the octagonal nine-storey stone pagoda (photo below) that is one of the numerous cultural treasu-res of the Woljeongsa Temple.

Sangwonsa Temple is located eight kilometres to the north of Wonjeongsa Temple. Built by a Buddhist monk in 643, the temple was reconstructed in 705, destroyed by a fire in 1946 and restored one year later. Only the Jonggak bell pavilion was left unscathed by the fire. Ingredients 1 kg horseradish, 8 garlic cloves, bunch of spring onions, 40 g Korean chili powder, 1 tsp ginger, 50 g wild chives, 50 ml fish sauce, 200 ml water, 2 tsp rice flour, 1 tsp sugar, 3 tsp saltPreparation Peel the horseradish, dice and place in salt water for five hours. Slice the spring onions into rings, finely cut the garlic cloves and ginger. Mix the diced horseradish with all the ingredients and put it in a glass jar. Press down on the top to remove any air or bubbles.
