greeted me as I stepped across
the threshold of this very special
hotel. At the heart of Tallinn’s
beautiful old town, its massive
wooden beams, green and plum-
coloured decor made me think
of my great-uncle Alexander,
whose extensive travels were often
planned around this historic
port-of-call. Steeped in a rustic,
baronial atmosphere, the hotel’s inner
glow and warmth beckoned me
irresistibly in…

the Great Hall and reading-room
invited me to sink into
the plush arm-chairs in the glow
of candles and a crackling log fire.
As if in a tavern,
with a drink at arm’s length,
this is the place to retire
from the world, to settle down
thankfully with books,
newspapers and travel journal,
and reflect on a rich
cultural heritage and
natural good taste.

are even more faithfully recalled
in the beautifully restored vaulted
cellars, which I soon discovered
to be the main dining-room
in this 13th-century building.
Copious breakfasts and
imaginative meals are served
with grace and flair, accompanied
by soft candlelight, gleaming
tableware and a rich selection
of fine wines and Champagne.
In summer, the courtyard garden
provides an equally
enchanting alternative.

in the cobbled streets of Tallinn,
my room was a haven of warmth,
peacefulness and faultless taste.
Amidst its luxurious furnishings,
enticing bed linen and subdued
lighting, I imagined great-uncle
Alexander returning from a tour
of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral,
the Town-Hall Square and
Palace of the Czars, staring
in bemused fashion at the direct-
dial telephone, color television,
modem and fax connections…

sheltered by its towers
and sturdy walls, I was again
reminded that the past
can play a very gracious
host to the present.
Within thick stone walls
enhanced by paintings and
antiques, the hotel’s facilities
include a boardroom with
state-of-the-art equipment,
as well as cocktail and
banqueting possibilities.
A return to the source,
for businessmen and
travellers of discerning taste.
