His graphic, conceptual
approach made him the
perfect choice for this cover,
which was inspired by the
radschläger – the cartwheeling
fgure that is the symbol of
Düsseldorf (read more in
our feature on page 40). The
illustration cleverly combines
the traditional radschläger
fgure with the modern
silhouette of the Gehry
buildings in Düsseldorf’s
Medienhafen district.

STEP INTO VAN BOMMEL
Men’s footwear and accessories brand
Floris van Bommel has opened a new store
in Düsseldorf, in the centre of the city near
Karlsplatz. Visitors who step through the store’s
deceptively narrow façade will be delighted by
the spacious warehouse area on the frst foor.
Exposed vintage wooden foors, copper lamps
and pops of blue on the walls combine to create
an old-fashioned, English-inspired aesthetic.
As well as the men’s collections, which form the
core of the brand, the best-selling pieces from
the women’s collection can be found here. fm

ECLECTIC CHIC
If there’s one certainty with Miuccia Prada, it is that there are
no certainties. Her autumn/winter 2015/16 collection for Miu
Miu is a glorious mishmash of colours, patterns, and even eras.
Outfts are an exercise in contrasts, with thick houndstooth coats
teamed with patent crocodile leather miniskirts. The efect is a
joyous assault on the senses. Oversized buttons are a key motif
that unites sometimes disparate looks. This oversized theme was
also apparent in the costume jewellery worn by the models who
showed the collection. The only area where Prada doesn’t play
with proportions is accessories; bags and shoes have a distinctly
1950s feel, albeit with a cartoon-like Miu Miu makeover. th

STREETS AHEAD
Tissot has referenced its
heritage in its Chemin des
Tourelles range of watches,
named after the street in Le
Locle, Switzerland, where the
brand started to manufacture
its timepieces in 1907. In the
latest collection, a variety
of versions is available, with
difering styles and straps;
women should seek out
the minimalist model with
its white leather strap and
glistening, light-catching
face while, for men, the rose
gold watch with a deep-brown
strap is sure to become a
staple accessory. This is a
key range from the timepiece
specialist, which was
founded in 1853 and whose
headquarters is still located
in Chemin des Tourelles. mkh

COCKTAIL HOUR
Designed to display
extraordinary coloured
gemstones to their full
potential, this distinctive
Colonna cocktail ring is the
latest piece in Wempe’s By
Kim collection. A 16.83-carat
tourmaline takes centre stage
in a rose-gold setting, while
the band is formed from
ten 10.85-carat tourmalines
edged in bands of rose gold,
inlaid with 40 brilliant-cut
diamonds. The technical
expertise involved in creating
such a ring makes this piece
a masterful achievement.
Although this is a colourful
and exquisite piece of
jewellery, it is elegant and
doesn’t overwhelm the hand,
ensuring that the owner will
wear it for years to come. hl

CURATED WITH CARE
ELA is a concept store that’s all about curation, ofering a carefully selected range of clothes and accessories from established designers and emerging labels, all chosen by owner Ela Holscher-Di Marco. Menswear and womenswear are presented alongside magazines and lifestyle and art pieces, to highlight the connection between art and fashion. Holscher-Di Marco’s passion is showcasing new and up-and-coming designers; over the past 34 years she has pioneered edgy labels including Henrik Vibskov, Format and Preach. CLASSICS MADE NEW
This season, Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection excels at combining classic brand heritage with a distinctly modern look – a challenging feat. The label’s menswear style director Kim Jones took inspiration from 80s cult designer Christopher Nemeth, his personal hero, reinterpreting Nemeth’s hand-stitched nature-inspired patterns using the brand’s staple luxury materials and some thoroughly modern techniques: examples include etched shearling and cork-embossed cashmere. Jones also pays homage to Nemeth’s denim work in perfectly tailored woollen cashmere, and denim-mix trousers and matching jean jackets. Nemeth’s prints also appear on some of the brand’s bags. Elsewhere in the collection, trousers feature three-inch turn-ups, while padded shell jackets and updated ski jackets give this season’s menswear ofering a distinctly younger edge than previous collections. Louis Vuitton is continuing to establish itself as one of the go-to labels for luxury contemporary menswear. rpLouis Vuitton, Königsallee 20, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 323230, louisvuitton.com

SAY IT WITH DIAMONDS
Inspired by the style of the 1920s, Bucherer presents its latest collection of fne jewellery, Vive Elle. The art deco-infuenced range comprises around 20 pieces, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. Featuring exquisite materials such as white gold, platinum and diamonds, the collection fuses Bucherer’s heritage of excellence in craftsmanship with the zest for life that characterised the Roaring Twenties. This ring’s
distinctively solid look is based around a stylised fgure of eight, which evokes ideas of infnity as well as referencing 1888, the year Bucherer was founded. The drop earrings use the same motif with a more delicate efect, and are perfect for evening events. hl

Cities can be strongly associated with all manner of things: drinks, buildings, arts and local crafts, famous residents past and present. Few, however, are associated with an action – and one that provides the doer with no beneft, other than the fun of having done it. Perhaps that is all that is needed. After all, Düsseldorf consistently ranks among one of the best places to live in the world.
Look to the streets, from statuary and signage to Alfred Zschorsch’s 1950s landmark fountain in Burgplatz and the fountain on Martin Luther Platz, and to the shops, with their mugs, T-shirts and other souvenirs, and the image of cartwheeling children is prevalent. Notice it on the doorknockers of Saint Lambert’s church, on the manhole covers, even in the bakery windows – the cartwheeler often
Perfectly capturing the ever-changing and exuberant spirit of Düsseldorf, images of children turning joyful cartwheels are one of the city’s most
enduring symbols, as Josh Sims discovers

stamp to send a postcard and it may well appear
there too. From doorstops to sweets, soft toys to
grafti, the cartwheeler is everywhere you turn.
The fgure of the cartwheeler, radschläger
in German, is as much a symbol of Düsseldorf
as the Eifel Tower is a symbol of Paris or
yellow taxicabs are a symbol of New York. It is,
in one form or another, the city’s most popular
souvenir purchase. The association between
the city and the cartwheeler’s fying hands
and feet is perhaps Düsseldorf’s most historic
yet least-known feature, often overshadowed
by the high-end shopping of Königsallee, or
the impressively condensed 260 bars found in
Altstadt’s square kilometre.
The origin of this association between city
and cartwheeling is steeped in local mythology
and subject to intense debate. Many believe it
is attached to the story of a long-ago wedding PH

Above: souvenir cups and saucers bearing the familiar image
between local nobility. When one of the spokes
of the happy couple’s carriage wheel broke –
an omen of bad luck – a small boy is said to
have placed himself in the wheel to allow the
wedding procession to continue. In another
version of the tale, cartwheeling boys at an
unhappy wedding managed to prevent the
bride from crying and made her laugh instead.
The notion of cartwheeling as an
expression of happiness probably comes
closest to the truth. Another story says that
cartwheeling became a city-wide craze
celebrating victory in the battle of Worringen
in 1288, when local noble Adolf VIII of Berg
defeated the Archbishop of Cologne. The
notorious rivalry between the citizens of
Düsseldorf and Cologne is today most often
demonstrated on the football pitch.
Others suggest that this spontaneous
revelry was, in fact, organised by Adolf himself
in celebration of his military triumph – and
sponsored with a few well-placed pfennig coins.
Later generations of children continued the
tradition by cartwheeling for visitors, charging
a pfennig per spin, a practice that continued
well into the 20th century. And when the Jan
Wellem monument, a statue sculpted in 1711 of
a popular local ruler, was returned to the city
in 1945, after years of being kept in protective
storage, cartwheeling children appeared on the
streets once more.
Today, it is less common to see small
children perform for the crowds, though
this doesn’t stop older visitors to the city

trying it out for the camera. This can-do
attitude is certainly in the spirit of the original
cartwheeling Düsseldorf citizenry. And
cartwheeling has certainly not died out. Those
visiting Düsseldorf during the summer months
may be lucky enough to stumble upon one of
the city’s most unusual traditions, held in the
old town alongside the Rhine. While other
cities stage marathons, Düsseldorf has held a
cartwheeling championship since 1937. Several
hundred young people, aged between eight
and 12, as well as international competitors,
take part; the challenge is to see how many
cartwheels can be performed over a 15 or 20
metre stretch. It makes a dizzying spectacle
– and one that is as joyous as the less formal
cartwheeling of days gone by

Germany’s most fashionable citizens are embracing technology as they search
for labels that combine good looks with functionality, writes Beth Druce
HIGH TECH, HIGH
STYLE
48 | F E AT U R E S
Technically advanced clothing has not previously been known for its style credentials, but that is changing. And
when the streets of Germany are hit with sub-zero temperatures this winter, the fashion-conscious can remain warm, dry and stylish.
The family-owned Schöfel label is one example of a brand that combines function with fashion. Founded over 200 years ago, it was involved in the early development and manufacture of windproof, waterproof Gore-Tex in the 1980s, and has since become one of the leading names in skiwear and outdoor clothing. Increasingly, however, the label is being spotted of the slopes, worn by city dwellers keen to sport its collection of streamlined and stylish technical apparel. Schöfel’s minimalist, brightly coloured winter jackets are constructed using Ventloft insulation and the company’s own Venturi Stretch laminate, which combines breathability and waterproof and windproof qualities with close-ftting fexibility.
German heritage brand Bogner, founded by Olympic ski jumper Willy Bogner in 1932, remains as popular as ever. Today the brand’s
menswear collection combines a distinctive retro aesthetic with cutting-edge functionality. Goose-down jackets take inspiration from the original jacket worn by Germany’s Olympic ski team (Bogner was a sponsor as early as 1936), incorporating striking motifs with refective panels, a detachable, adjustable hood and water-repellent zips. The snow gaiters may not be necessary during a leisurely stroll around the city, but as temperatures fall you’ll stay cosy.
An emerging genre of men’s apparel is

simultaneously performance-enhanced and suited to an urban lifestyle – an ofering that cold-water surf brand Finisterre has built its name on. ‘Just because a garment has technical features doesn’t mean it has to look like a technical product,’ explains the company’s marketing manager Natalie Beck. Finisterre, which started out serving the needs of surfers in cold-water regions, now sells its well-edited mix of colour-coordinated merino wool base layers, sweats, technical jackets and socks to a much wider market.
One of the European markets where Finisterre is seeing strongest growth is Germany. While Germany is one of the few countries in the world with a surfable inner-city wave, on the Eisbach river in Munich, it’s not German surf culture that is driving this growth. ‘We have seen an increasing proportion of our customers coming from the big cities,’ explains Beck. ‘This year we’re particularly excited about a new insulation development we’re using within our cold water surfng range. We’ve replaced the recycled polyester flling with British wool insulation. For the same amount of flling you get more warmth, better moisture management, and improved heat retention. You can leave your jacket on a radiator or car engine to warm

up before you put it on, and it will retain that warmth, like a wearable hot water bottle.’
Functional footwear is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany, spearheaded by Vivobarefoot, whose ‘barefoot’ technology means feet can enjoy the benefts of barefoot walking whatever the weather. ‘Germany is one of the four areas in the world that is very receptive,’ explains digital marketing manager Jamie Page. ‘It’s a country of people that seem to really understand what we’re doing, the importance of functional footwear and the benefts of healthy feet.’
The Scott, a key style in Vivobarefoot’s autumn/winter 2015/16 range, is a lightweight, waterproof lace-up boot in soft leather that is ideal for colder climates. ‘We’ve included a range of features for thermal protection, while still allowing the foot to be free to function fully,’ explains Page. The Vivo aesthetic is defned by its pared-down approach. The Ra is a leather
Oxford shoe, while the Gobi is a desert boot made from watertight waxed canvas with a thermal layer underfoot. ‘Our entire lifestyle range is designed primarily for everyday wear but we stick to the same principles with all our shoes, so technically you could run marathons in our Oxford lace-ups and desert boots,’ says Page.
Marathon-ready Oxford shoes, Olympic-standard ski jackets and wearable hot water bottles are all part of a blurring of boundaries between fashion and function; a long overdue infux of clothing companies that cater for fashion-conscious urbanites who want to equip themselves for winter’s extremes. Clients, says Beck, are ‘urban-based customers who are active, afuent, and clued-up on good product.’ Smart products are being driven by even smarter consumers: function is in fashion schoefel.de, bogner.com, fnisterreuk.com, vivobarefoot.com

CAFÉ SOCIETYGermany is a nation of cofee lovers and the country’s café culture is thriving. Isabella Redmond Styles
picks some of the best examples in Düsseldorf
Cofee is Germany’s favourite drink, more popular than water and even than beer. German adults drink an average of 165 litres of cofee per year, compared to 140 litres of bottled water and a mere 107 litres of beer, according to the most recent fgures from the Deutscher Kafeeverband (German Cofee Association).
Cofee was introduced into Germany in the late 17th century, when cofeehouses began to become popular across Europe. The beverage on ofer at the time would have been very diferent to that served after German cofee lover Melitta Bentz invented the modern drip cofeemaker in 1908. Bentz’s innovative paper flter made a grounds-free, less bitter cup of cofee; variations on her invention remain in use today.
Visitors to Germany will enjoy discovering the long-standing tradition of kafee und kuchen: a good cup of cofee and a slice of something sweet. Düsseldorf isn’t short of venues that serve great cofee and cake, whether you prefer elaborate French patisserie or an artisanal brew served in ultra-chic, minimalist surroundings.

Olga Knoebel named her café Pure Freude, which translates into English as ‘pure joy’, after her family’s punk and new wave record label. Even in winter, the café’s courtyard is lovely to sit in, snuggled in the blankets and rugs provided, but it’s the spectacular French-style patisserie that those in the know head here to enjoy. The only hard decision is which sweet treat should accompany your cofee. The macaroons, available in a rainbow array of colours and favours from lemon to violet, are too pretty to resist, but it’s also worth keeping room for a freshly baked croissant, dainty petits fours and a scoop of homemade ice cream.Pure Freude, Hohe Strasse 19, 40213 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 8632 0149,purefreude.deP

HUGO BOSS
For autumn/winter 2015/16, Boss menswear is inspired by sophisticated winter holiday destinations – think Aspen, Colorado, or St Moritz, Switzerland. As such, the looks refect outdoorsy elegance. From padded coats to pure wool trousers, even the warmest layers are cut close to the body for a fattering ft. True to form, materials are of the highest quality and range from merino wool and mohair to fnest cashmere. The colour palette is similarly refned, sticking to shades such as granite and glacier blue with just a hint of brick red.Hugo Boss, Heinrich-Heine-Allee 53, 40213 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 135 4127, hugoboss.com

CHOPARD
Fans of Chopard’s distinctive Imperiale
collection will be delighted by the recent
addition of a new jewellery-inspired
timepiece, the Imperiale 36mm Joaillerie.
Its 18-carat white gold case and mother-of-
pearl dial are both adorned with diamonds,
making the watch perfect for evening,
while the minimalist grey and silver colour
scheme keeps it looking truly modern: this
is understated glamour at its best.

STRENESSE
Inspired by the spirit of Paris, the latest womenswear collection from Strenesse adds a German touch to classic French style. Androgynous silhouettes are given a feminine edge with soft textures, bold colours and prints, as seen in the super-cosy coats which are available in a wide range of colours and prints, from classic black and navy to glamorous leopard print. Boxy suits have been given a modern makeover with wide fared trousers which can be paired with masculine loafers. Simple yet standout accessories complete the collection so, with everything you need to get you through the colder months, Strenesse could be your one-stop shop for a capsule winter wardrobe.Strenesse, Schadow Arkaden, Schadowstrasse 11, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 1365 8977, strenesse.com
RENÉ LEZARD
When Thomas Schaefer founded the René Lezard label in 1978, he did so with the idea of creating a modern, design-led premium brand for men and women that used only the highest quality materials. This philosophy remains at the core of the latest autumn/winter collection. In muted colours and with a relaxed silhouette, the pieces are elegant and stylish without being trend-driven. Warm fabrics such as cashmere and wool are used throughout the collection, giving the clothes an invitingly tactile look. Those seeking dressier items won’t be disappointed, as there are plenty of silk blouses, along with statement coats in foral jacquard.Rene Lezard, Schadow Arkaden, Schadowstrasse 11, 40212 Düsseldorf, +49 (0)211 323 7210, rene-lezard.com

MAX MARA
Max Mara presents a feminine yet bold
collection this season, taking much of its
inspiration from images of Marilyn Monroe
in the 1960s. This concept works beautifully
with the Italian fashion house’s classic
style, which has always focused on excellent
materials and tailoring. Here it becomes
softer and more rounded than in recent
seasons, while still maintaining Max Mara’s
distinctive style. Soft tailoring is key, and
this is a brand to go to for outerwear, as some
of the season’s best coats and jackets can be
found in this collection. Soft and slouchy is
a key silhouette for autumn/winter, and Max
Mara’s contrasts between ftted separates
and loose, comfortable knitwear make for
one of the most grown-up and feminine
takes on the trend.

46: High Tech, High Style
