An investigation is under way aer a Hume councillor referred to the municipality as the ‘‘terrorist training centre of Australia’’ on a closed social media group.

Cr Jack Medcra, who made the comments in response to a link about counter-terrorism raids in the area earlier this month, has apologised for causing oence but said a serious discussion was needed about terror links in Hume.

‘‘Welcome to Hume, the terrorist training centre of Australia,’’ he said on Facebook.

In a reference to a 2003 ban on ham and

Medcraft terror stormpork at council functions, Cr Medcra added: ‘‘First it was ham sandwiches we were known for, now this garbage. Watch out Sunbury, we could be next.’’

It’s understood the comments have since been deleted.

Cr Medcra last week returned from a 28-day suspension handed down aer a probe into his alleged bad behaviour at a community meeting in Broadmeadows late last year.

ere have been several alleged terrorist links to Hume this year. Jake Bilardi, of Craigieburn, and Suhan Rahman, of Roxburgh Park, were reportedly killed ghting overseas for Islamic State, while a 17-year-old was arrested in a

counter-terrorism operation in Greenvale on May 8.

Cr Medcra said he was tired of people ‘‘fobbing o’’ the serious issue of terrorism.

‘‘My comments were tongue in cheek; they weren’t meant with any malice,’’ he said. ‘‘But a lot of people are very worried about what’s going on. I’m sick and tired of people looking at Hume for all the wrong reasons.’’

Cr Medcra said he was disappointed that his comments had sparked a furore while little had been done about another councillor’s reference to Sunbury as a racist community.

Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola conrmed Cr Medcra’s latest comments

on Facebook are being investigated. He said the councillors’ code of conduct extended to statements made via social media.

Mr Isola said Hume took enormous pride in the fact it is one of Australia’s most harmonious and multicultural communities.

‘‘Our residents come from more than 166 dierent countries and speak more than 120 languages, and we think that’s one of the best things about Hume,’’ he said.

A spokeswoman for Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said all types of racial or religious intolerance were unacceptable.

Council city communities director Margarita Caddick said there has already been a signicant response to the survey.

‘‘Council is very keen to determine the degree to which the CCTV cameras have helped reduce crime and antisocial behaviour

‘‘ We’ll use the survey ndings to help us produce a report ’’ - Margarita Caddick

By Matt Crossman

Residents and businesses are being asked for their feedback about Sunbury’s closed circuit television system as Hume council seeks to evaluate how cameras help reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.

A short survey sent to participants of previous consultation sessions asks how safe people consider the town centre and whether cameras make a dierence.

Last month, Star Weekly reported that

police and businesses believe the cameras help pinpoint oences and boost perceptions of safety.

Cameras are located at the Brook and Evans streets intersection, Brook Street newsagency, Evans Arcade, O’Shannassy Street and at the corner of Evans Street and Gap Road. Footage is monitored from Sunbury police station.

e system was installed following a state government grant and 20 cameras were switched on in April last year in a bid to deter would-be oenders and help solve crimes.

in Sunbury,’’ Ms Caddick said. ‘‘We’ll use the survey ndings to help us produce an evaluation report about the cameras, which will provide feedback to the Victorian government, as well as inform the development of council’s CCTV policy.’’

Police have said the 24-hour cameras are an important tool that has aided many investigations. Footage has led to arrests in a range of cases, including assault and hooning oences. Sunbury Business Association has also declared the project a great success.

Spotlight on CCTV success

Hume council has defended claims that its 2015-16 budget is too focused on the east of the municipality.

Cr Jack Ogilvie last week made a lone stand against the dra budget, which proposes an average rates increase of 5.3 per cent, saying there was little in it for Sunbury.

‘‘Councils can either be serious about this or laugh o what the community is saying about cutting costs,’’ he said.

Cr Ogilvie said ‘‘all the big money’’ was being spent in areas such as Craigieburn, with some projects in Sunbury either carried over or restricted to planning stages.

Chief executive Domenic Isola said the budget delivered signicant funding to projects that would benet Sunbury families, including planning for a new warm water pool at Sunbury Aquatic Centre ($400,000), designs for a new civic centre ($2 million) and reconstruction and duplication of a Wildwood Road bridge.

A total of $1.75 million has been set aside to redevelop the McMahon pavilion at Clarke Oval. Also funded was the refurbishment of a pavilion at Langama Park ($650,000) and works at the Riddell Road landll.

Mayor Adem Atmaca said the Clarke Oval works would benet a large number of people.

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the rates increase was roughly four times CPI.

‘‘It’s completely irresponsible,’’ he said.Sunbury Community Progress

Association president Alison Cunningham said Sunbury continued to get a fair deal.

Budget bias rejected

Mums and Labor MPs have slammed this year’s federal budget, labelling moves to strip paid parental leave entitlements from almost 50 per cent of parents as the mother of all insults.

e government said the controversial plan, announced on Mother’s Day, is designed to stop new mums from ‘‘double dipping’’ by getting parental leave from employers and the government.

Mothers can currently access payments from a government scheme and their workplace, if their employer has one.

e government will also cut family tax benets and childcare rebates in a move designed to get stay-at-home parents working.

Mothers in arms over budget insultsKristy Wilkie with her children, Tayla and Michael. (Joe Mastroianni)

Sunbury’s Kristy Wilkie, who runs Forever Friends Learning Centre in Horne Street and has three children of her own, said local families would be badly aected.

She said many parents would be forced to go back to work sooner and could struggle to nd places in already stretched childcare centres.

‘‘ey should not be ripping money o families like this,’’ Ms Wilkie said.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said families were being punished by the government as part of a budget that ignored much of the electorate.

‘‘Across our region there are several townships that have received desperately-needed funding, however Sunbury has fallen o the Abbott

government radar,’’ Mr Mitchell said. ‘‘Projects like trade training centres didn’t even get a look in.’’

Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said the ‘‘fundamentally unfair’’ budget would lead to more tax, more debt and higher unemployment.

‘‘ere’s funding for work experience programs to assist young people in areas of high youth unemployment. But Bendigo and central Victoria did not make the list.’’

Macedon Ranges council gets $2 million in Roads to Recovery funding but no new money for health prevention programs cut last year.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to have their heaters checked to help prevent the costly damage and potential trauma of a winter house re.

With last week’s cold snap sending people scurrying for extra sources of heat, the CFA has warned that winter is a residential re danger period.

Fireghters were called to more than 1650 house res across the state last year, resulting in 16 deaths. ere were 13 house res in the Macedon Ranges and 42 in Hume.

Experts said faulty electrical heaters and poorly maintained gas units could lead to tragic incidents, while wood heating was not without its dangers.

Riddells Creek CFA community safety manager Dean Anderson said the brigade attended at least one or two chimney res every winter.

“e risk of res in the home certainly increases during the winter months because the added demand we place on our heating and electrical appliances,” he said.

CFA state duty ocer Rohan Luke said gas heaters should be serviced annually, with poorly maintained units increasing the risk of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

‘‘ere can be no greater reason to have your gas heater inspected and serviced than to ensure the safety of loved ones,’’ he said.

‘‘Another common mistake is people drying clothes indoors near heaters and replaces. Clothes should be kept at least one metre from the heat source.’’

e CFA has started a “safe mistake” campaign to raise awareness of small mistakes that may lead to house res. Details: www.safemistakezone.com.au

Thumbs up for makeoverRetailers and shoppers alike have welcomed the new-look Gisborne town centre.

e $400,000 streetscape renewal project, including bluestone seating, speed humps, asphalt footpaths and tree pits, also improves pedestrian safety on Brantome and Hamilton streets.

Underground drainage has also been upgraded to combat ooding problems.

e works, jointly funded by Macedon Ranges council and the state government, aimed to address tripping hazards and slippery surfaces while improving the overall appearance of the retail centre.

A Macedon Ranges council spokeswoman said outdoor seating, bicycle hoops and trees will be in place by the end of next month.

Budget savings mean a pathway on Hamilton Street’s service road will also be extended.

Cr Russell Mowatt said the works greatly improved one of Gisborne’s busiest trading areas.

‘‘Feedback I’ve received from the community shows that people welcome the safety improvements,’’ he said.

Gabby Martinuzzo, manager of Flamin’ Chicken take-away in Brantome Street, said the short-term inconvenience caused by the works had been worth it.

‘‘It’s certainly a lot better for pedestrians,’’ Ms Martinuzzo said. ‘‘I haven’t heard one negative comment.’’

Aordable Macedon Ranges properties are being snapped up ‘‘overnight’’ as rising Melbourne prices fuel interest in fringe areas.

Gisborne Real Estate director Janis Paul said people are increasingly buying in the Macedon Ranges because of price not just lifestyle.

‘‘You can buy a block of land in Gisborne for $220,000 … you’d never get that close to Melbourne in a quality area,’’ she said.

Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria gures show the median house price in New Gisborne rose 9.6 per cent in the March quarter to $556,300. e gure is well above the regional Victorian median price of $341,000.

Median prices in Kyneton increased 7.5 per cent to $465,000, while Gisborne was up 0.8 per cent to $540,000.

Woodend’s median fell 0.8 per cent to $645,000, while the gure for Macedon was unchanged at $600,000.

Prices in Romsey were up 4.4 per cent for the quarter to $412,000, while Riddells Creek’s median increased 1.8 per cent to $560,000.

Ms Paul said banks seemed to be ‘‘friendly’’ and nance was good, leading to healthy interest in private sales.

She said the average time houses spent on the market was down.

‘‘If it’s a bargain, if it’s a cheap property or if it’s aordable, it goes overnight.

Homes on the range lure buyers“If it’s overpriced compared to other

properties, it will sit there longer but eventually sells.’’

PRDnationwide Kyneton real estate branch manager Helen Jens agreed that interest in houses less than $800,000 was high.

She said increasing prices in the Melbourne market were benetting Macedon Ranges vendors.

‘‘Once [Melbourne prices] start pushing, our prices start moving, and then a little bit of urgency comes into it,’’ Ms Jens said.

Recent notable sales included the auction of a property in Ebden Street, Kyneton.

‘‘It was a very run-down Victorian cottage and that sold for $316,000 at auction,’’ Ms Jens

said. ‘‘It’s in a great position but needed a lot of work.’’

Ms Jens said the high end of the market was tougher, particularly in traditionally popular Mount Macedon.

‘‘Once upon a time, if anything came on at Mount Macedon, it was swooped on,’’ she said.

‘‘ere’s a denite lack of buyers there. “If people have got $800,000 or $900,000,

they can build a heck of lot more in Gisborne than what they could buy in Mount Macedon,” Ms Jens said. “e snob value has gone a bit.’’

As reported by Star Weekly, medium prices in Sunbury increased 2.1 per cent in the March quarter to $357,500.

Helpers at Kyneton Museum have been given a hands-on conservation lesson as part of National Volunteers Week. Museum co-ordinator Alison Buchanan showed volunteers how to document and preserve the museum’s textile collection during ve-hour workshops last Tuesday and Wednesday. The museum has a signicant collection of garments from the 1880s to 1940s, including wedding dresses and even kilts donated by local families. Ms Buchanan said that while the museum had two paid employees, its 10 volunteers were crucial. ‘‘Without them, it would be a real struggle. They’re an absolutely integral part of what we do.’’ Matt Crossman

Work updatesRodney Street in Gisborne has been reconstructed into a full-width sealed road as part of a $332,000 Macedon Ranges council project. Widening works in Stawell Street, Romsey are due to be completed next month, while a new 300-metre section of Ashbourne Road, Woodend, will be constructed before the end of this month. A section of Lauriston-Reservoir Road near Kyneton will be reconstructed by mid-June, while drainage works on driveways in High Street, Lanceeld, will address ooding problems.

Radio wavesSunbury community radio station 3NRG premiered a new outside broadcast system at Saturday night’s BFL match between Sunbury and Melton at Clarke Oval. Built in-house over the past 18 months, the system is internet-enabled and takes just 15 minutes to set up.

Library links inNew carpet, windows, heating and cooling and shelves have been installed at Woodend library as part of a $92,000 renovation unveiled last week. A wi- enabled courtyard links the library with the community centre next door.

WayOut funds go onCobaw Community Health’s WayOut program for same-sex attracted and gender diverse young people has ongoing funding from this month’s state budget. Cobaw has also secured accreditation as a Rainbow Tick organisation.

Ranges’ budget dissectedAfter elections in 2012, Macedon Ranges council owed $4 million. This year’s budget rockets debt to $14 million.

Council is borrowing another $6.5 million; $817,000 of this borrowed money is earmarked for future repayment of loans; debt servicing is out to $824,000 this year ($500,000 interest).

Anyone remember current councillors saying they would do this before elected?

How about the unseen, unconsulted, unexplained Gisborne ofce extension?

Stage one costs, originally $700,000, are now $1.5 million, with a new $800,000 ($500,000 loan) cost, and a mysterious $1.2 million ($1 million loan), up for approval in this budget.

Compare this with the $1.6 million from rates the council will spend on roads.

This year Hanging Rock funds are moved from a mandatory statutory nancial reserve (required by law) to a discretionary nancial reserve (kept at council’s discretion).

What’s going on? Isn’t the Rock public open space and a community facility any more? No sign of concert income, either.

Although it’s good $40,000 goes to street tree renewal, more ($55,000) is spent on something called ‘events and festival co-ordination’.

Council’s ubiquitous “under ve per cent” rate rise (well above ination), together with increases in charges, reaps an additional $2.6 million (or an extra 6.2 per cent) in council’s total rates and charges income.

Don’t overlook customer fees and charges (appendix C4). Most everything the community pays for goes up. Most everything developers pay for doesn’t – in

fact the building fee for multiple units drops $1000.

There’s more, but even these examples say this budget isn’t fair, responsible, transparent or accountable.

Council’s isn’t putting community rst and its obsessive borrowing is taking the shire into deep debt.

Budget documents are on council’s website. Make a submission before noon on May 29 (copy to Mary-Anne Thomas and the Minister for Local Government).

A Sunbury-based councillor, who was suspended for 28 days aer a second probe into his conduct at a ery town hall meeting, says money spent on a political ‘witchhunt’ could have helped save programs for at-risk youth.

But the council maintains the initial investigation had to be handled by an independent body because it included complaints about the organisation.

Cr Jack Medcra said the cost of the rst probe, which he claims ‘‘solved nothing’’, could have funded two Moving Forward programs to give young people ‘‘a ghting chance’’.

e council has previously called on the

‘‘A council can’t investigate itself,’’ he said.Mr Isola said the subsequent Municipal

Association of Victoria conduct panel considered a range of evidence, including the initial report, in drawing its conclusion.

As reported by Star Weekly, Cr Medcra is Star Weekly, Cr Medcra is Star Weeklyappealing his one-month suspension aer the second inquiry into claims he breached the code of conduct. Cr Ogilvie was reprimanded.

e probes followed complaints made aer a meeting at Broadmeadows Town Hall last September. It was alleged Cr Medcra tussled with a Broadmeadows Progress Association supporter over a sign and yelled at a number of people. Cr Ogilvie was accused of intimidating behaviour.

federal government to reinstate funding for the eight-week program, which helped young people who had disengaged from education or employment.

An invoice seen by Star Weekly shows the rst investigation, which Cr Medcra and Cr Jack Ogilvie have claimed cleared them of any wrongdoing, cost $32,849.83.

Cr Medcra said the money could have been saved by keeping the investigation in-house.

‘‘Instead, it’s spent all this money on a witchhunt,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a total waste of ratepayers’ money.’’

Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the initial probe included complaints about the organisation.

‘Witchhunt’ bill mounts

Light towers are up at Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve as the rst stage of a major upgrade nears completion.

e $350,000 project, including a netball court reconstruction, is funded by Macedon Ranges council, the state government and local sports clubs.

e towers, which will allow for night football and netball matches and other events, were due to go up early last week but works were delayed due to wet weather. ey eventually went up on ursday.

Gardiner Reserve Community Project committee spokesman Paul Doolan says people will notice the lights on for extended periods, with 100 hours of testing required as a condition of their rst use.

He says the upgrades, which will also include

the addition of an electronic screen and scoreboard, will open up Gardiner Reserve to more sporting clubs and community groups.

‘‘ese changes are to allow other associations and groups to utilise the area and bring more people into the centre of town,’’ Mr Doolan says.

e new screen is expected to improve the experience for people attending matches and allow new ways of fundraising, such as movie nights. Plans for stage two works include an amphitheatre between Gardiner and Sankey reserves for use by schools and groups.

Athol Guy and friends will perform at a project fundraiser at Gisborne Golf Club from 7pm on June 13. Details: goo.gl/O8A3

If atmosphere had a price tag, this gorgeous country cottage, c1854, would set new benchmarks. “Dowsett Farm”, a property of about 2.02 hectares, has its origins in the gold rush days and the house has kept features from then: wide baltic oorboards, regency pine-lined ceilings (some painted, others natural), replace (dining room) and an amazing bluestone replace (sitting room). Along with this undeniable charm – also found in the bedrooms – there’s a modern (but character-lled) kitchen and cleverly renovated bathroom. A bluestone-and-timber studio (with wonderful pitched-ceiling shingles and rough-hewn joists intact) can be turned to many imaginative uses, and another bluestone/brick building is ideal for cool storage. Mains gas connection is another drawcard at this great country retreat, just minutes from Kyneton’s many attractions, including fast rail.

Panoramic views of the Cobaw Ranges to the north and a spot just down the road from Newham Primary School and the General Store’s good food and coffee provides this recently renovated cottage-style abode with serious location cred. On about 2.74 hectares, the house is smart and modern, with three bedrooms – including the main with a sleek en suite. Near the front door, there’s the rst of two living areas, with the second (with wood heater) at the back abutting the kitchen. A stack of cupboards in a mid-grey, a bank of windows behind the sink and stainless-steel underbench oven, gas cooktop, canopy rangehood and dishwasher equip the cooks’ space. The family room opens to a verandah and deck on which to pull up a pew. A Daikin split-system, replace, machinery shed, two garden sheds, three water tanks, dam and bore, a large horse paddock, a good variety of fruit trees and lock-up double garage are other attractions.

A classic brick veneer of about 18 squares, on a block of about 663 square metres, this one has what most families look for: four bedrooms (each with wardrobe), two bathrooms, two living zones and a backyard big enough to encourage kids’ outdoor play. Entry is directly into a carpeted lounge room (wall gas heater, timber blinds, latte-toned feature wall) which links with the kitchen-meals zone with slate oor tiles. The kitchen has ample storage, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. A covered deck at the back has lattice work and looks out to a backyard with a garage/workshop, accessed via side gates. The property would make an excellent starter and has plenty of potential to add value and personal touches.

Opposite park and wetlands in Jackson’s Hill estate, this is a place that not only sparkles with a new feel, but also has the space and contemporary appointments that make it aspirational. On about 750 square metres, the house has four upstairs bedrooms which wrap around a retreat area, main bathroom (dual basins) and separate toilet. The big main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe behind an island wall, beyond which is a huge en suite with dual vanity basins and storage galore. An open study and living room (gas log re) ank the entry hall, then past the kitchen there are a huge family-meals area and a theatre room. There’s also a powder room. The spacious kitchen has stone benchtops, two-door pantry, dishwasher and 900mm cooker. A covered alfresco zone looks out to a manicured lawn. Ducted heating, porcelain tiles, 2.7-metre square-set ceilings, a side gate for caravan access, garden shed and double garage with internal access are extras.

‘Hidden gem’ is a term oft bandied about in property circles, but in this case it rings as true as a bell. Who would have guessed, from a kerbside view, that this spread is a knockout, a treasure trove of carefully sourced recycled goodies and an extravagance of earthy, organic elements in support?

Consider the bricks and bluestone from which it’s constructed and appear as an internal motif: saved from the old Lanceeld bakery and stables. The Baltic oorboards: sourced from a rural demolition. Limestone wall tiles and acres of sandstone pavers: new, but perfectly complementary. Exposed joists: handmade. Ceiling boards: limewashed. Period ourishes: brass light switches, stepped cornices, dado panels, open

replace surround in period style. On about 3035 square metres, the

sprawling, ve-bedroom, two-storey house truly is a result of the owners’ project, one imbued with soul, design air and utter liveability. It enfolds, on three sides, a massive, sandstone-paved room with a solar-heated, salt pool, the epicentre of year-round entertainment and relaxation.

Rooms that open to this wonderful asset include a lounge room with Tassie oak oorboards, cathedral ceiling and replace; a slate-tiled sitting room with Coonara wood heater; and a huge entertainment room with sandstone oor tiles beneath exposed joists and cathedral ceiling.

Next door to a gorgeously intimate dining room, the modern-country kitchen

has white-panelled cabinetry, corner pantry, dishwasher, underbench oven and electric cooktop. The laundry has matching cabinetry and an enclosed toilet, next door to which is a two-way bathroom with clawfoot bath and bespoke timber vanity unit.

Four large bedrooms are scattered around the ground oor, each with wardrobes and their own charming decor. And there’s an extra-large, sandstone-tiled study with pool views and a door to the back verandah – this would also make a great hobby space.

A true retreat, the upstairs main bedroom has a vast stretch of recycled Baltic oorboards, timber dado panels, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Its expanse includes a sitting/TV zone and

two sets of french doors opening to a big balcony with ornate wrought-iron balustrade – and views of Mount William.

Extensive brick paving below the balcony forms a barbecue gathering point, as does an open timber pergola attached to a shed/workshop complex of about 25 squares which has three-phase power and a hoist.

Ducted heating, two split-systems, established landscaping, and a remote-controlled double garage (timber-lined cathedral ceiling) are other drawcards at a property just 800 metres from the primary school and a short walk from Lanceeld Park and shopping precinct.

Real Estate Today

De-clutter the house is in the first priority and the kitchen is a good place to start. First, get everything

off the benches. Everything. Even the toaster. Put it in a cabinet and take it out when you use it. Find

a place where you can store everything in cabinets and drawers. Clear benchtops create an image of

cleanliness and space. Of course, you may notice that you do not have cabinet space to put everything.

Clean them out. The dishes, pots and pans that rarely get used? Put them in a box and put that box in

storage. You see, homebuyers will open all your cabinets and drawers, especially in the kitchen. They

want to be sure there is enough room for their “stuff.” If your kitchen cabinets, pantries, and drawers

look jammed full, it sends a negative message to the buyer and spoils an image of plentiful storage

space. Create open space. If you have a large amount of foodstuffs crammed into the shelves or pantry,

begin using them – especially canned goods.

Create the image of spaciousness by having uncrowded shelving. Beneath the sink is very critical, too.

Make sure the area beneath the sink is as empty as possible, removing all extra cleaning supplies. You

should scrub the area down as well, and determine if there are any tell-tale signs of water leaks that

may cause a homebuyer to hesitate in buying your home. If you have an interest is in buying, selling or

leasing, or indeed just talking about real estate, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or

call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

SPORT

By Tara Murray

A mixture of experience and youth is the key as Riddell District Netball League chases success at the AFL Victoria Country Championships on Saturday.

e team of 10 players includes ve from last year’s team, while eight of the side have previously represented the league at various competitions.

Melton Centrals’ Renee Hulls and Tran Troung, Rupertswood’s Ailish McCormack, Romsey’s Hope Hamilton and Riddell’s Christine Harris return from last year’s interleague team.

Riddell’s Danni Davidson is back in the squad aer playing interleague in 2013 and playing in the league’s Regional State League (RSL) side last season.

Harris and McCormack, and Rupertswood’s Tess Abbott and Emily Katona, were in the league’s RSL side which lost in overtime to the Ballarat Netball League in the Central Highlands grand nal earlier this year.

e two new players in the team are Riddell’s Bridget Aughton and Kilmore’s Samantha George.

Interleague coach Di McCormack said she was excited by the squad, which will play against the Nepean Netball League.

“To have Bridget [a Victorian Netball League player] in the squad is really great and it’s her rst time representing the league.” she said. “I’m looking forward to having her in the defensive end with Tess and Danni, which provides an experienced back half.

“I coached Christine in the RSL competition and I know how she plays. With Renee and Hope she will provide solid targets in the circle.”

McCormack said George would be the surprise packet for her, having seen her play only once last season when her team, Rupertswood, played Kilmore.

George, coach of Kilmore’s A-grade side, won the competition’s B-grade best and fairest in 2013 when Kilmore didn’t have an A-grade side.

She said it was encouraging to see Ailish and Katona get another opportunity in the senior side. Both are still eligible to play in the under-17 side.

“It’s good to have feedback that Hope and Renee enjoyed playing with Ailish last year,” she said.

“Em came into the RSL side and copped a beating, but got straight back up. She has matured a lot and has learnt to value her position on the court.”

Katona plays for Rupertswood’s B-grade side.McCormack said that if she didn’t have a full list that she would play Katona in A-grade every week.

It was a bad weekend for Sunbury Jets’ senior sides, with both the men’s and women’s side easily beaten in their Big V division 1 matches.

e men were on the back foot early against Melton on Sunday and never recovered, losing 101-74.

e Jets were down by nine points at quarter-time and the margin was out to 16 by half-time.

e third quarter saw the Jets cut the gap to 15 points and maintain hopes of a comeback, but it wasn’t to be.

e oroughbreds put the foot down in the nal quarter, outscoring the Jets 24-12.

Much of the damage to the Jets was done on the boards, as they took only 26 rebounds compared to the oroughbreds’ 57.

Four of the Jets’ ve starters reached double gures, with Luke Valentine top-scoring with 18 points.

e Jets’ women’s side lost 84-67 to Camberwell on Saturday night.

It was a close game for most of the night, with the Jets trailing by only ve points at half-time.

But as was the case in the rst half, Camberwell made two or three more baskets for the quarter to extend the lead.

Camberwell ran away with the game in the last quarter, outscoring the Jets 27-19.

Kelsey Sigl was dominant for the Jets with 21 points and 18 rebounds, but ended the game on the bench when she was fouled out. Leanne Urbon chipped in with 11 points.

It was better news for the Jets’ youth sides who had big wins.

It had been a tough couple of weeks for the youth men’s side in division 1, losing three out of their past four matches.

But they came out ring against Ballarat, hitting 12 of 20 eld goal attempts on the way to a 19-point quarter-time lead.

is set the tone for the game, with the Jets winning 100-52.

Luke Collins top-scored with 23 points, while Jeremy Wragg had 11 points, 12 rebounds and four steals.

In the youth women’s game, the Jets beat Southern Peninsula 60-46.

Sophie O’Brien top-scored with 20 points and had nine rebounds.

Double trouble for downed Jets

Player points, salary cap plan goes out to leaguesAFL Goldelds is encouraging its clubs to get ready for the introduction of a players points system and salary cap next season.

AFL Victoria released the dra framework for its community club sustainability program last ursday, and AFL Goldelds will brief clubs in its Ballarat, Riddell District and Maryborough and Castlemaine District leagues this week.

e AFL Vic plan proposes capping total player payments and ranking players on their previous playing history.

e dra indicates how the player points system will work and what classications players fall under in determining salary caps.

Penalties for breaching the salary cap include relegation, club nes, loss of points, suspended

from nals and player suspensions. Club nances will also be subject to audits.

Players who have played AFL in the previous three seasons will attract the most points. Six points will be allocated to them while state league tier 1 players (VFL, WAFL, SANFL) will command ve points and state league tier 2 players (NEAFL, TASFL) get four points. Also in the four-point bracket are TAC Cup players and “premium community players.”

A player’s standing as a “premium community player” will be determined by nishing positions in league and club best-and-fairest and goal-kicking leader boards, while home-grown players and people who haven’t played in 36 months will be worth one point each.

e longer a player has been at the club, the lower their points become.

AFL Goldelds general manager Rod Ward said meetings would take place with clubs this week.

“We’ll be encouraging the points system on every team sheet for the rest of the year, so they get used to it,” Ward said.

One element of the points system that is crucial to all leagues is the ability to award extra points to clubs.

“It allows us to have the ability to put in our regional strategies,” said Ward. “Smaller clubs, clubs with less juniors and clubs down at the bottom of the ladder for a few years can get extra points.”

AFL Goldelds is now reviewing its junior

competitions for any uneven distribution of players and Ward said the managing body had already discussed what the salary cap and points system may be for each league, but it would take a couple years to bed the new plan down.

“e salary cap and points level – we have an idea what they should be for next season by the gures from last season,” he said.

“Some clubs have players on contracts beyond this season … two to three years and we will be where we need to be.”

Clubs have until the end of July to comment on the dra.

Gisborne’s start to the Bendigo Football League season has given the club a reality check.

Used to sitting in the top half of the competition, the Bulldogs have had just one win aer the rst ve rounds and are ninth on the ladder.

Coach Rod Sharp said the side had copped a right whack for not doing the work needed.

“It has been a disappointing year so far,” Sharp said. “It probably comes from the commitment levels in the preseason.

quarter, then a kid got knocked out in the second quarter and when we lost Tim Walsh in the third quarter, it le us with only one player on the bench,

“When you only have one rotation, you are going to be hurt by scoreboard pressure.”

Sharp said Knox and Lynch were likely to return aer the interleague break but said depth was proving to be a problem.

Working on the tness levels will be a major focus for Sharp.

“We need to build on tness at the moment and that will come through solid work on the

“We have been competitive in every game for a quarter or half but haven’t been t enough to play out the whole game.”

On Saturday, the scoreboard wasn’t pretty as the Bulldogs lost to Sandhurst 17.25 (127) - 1.4 (10).

Sharp said the nal score wasn’t a true reection of the game.

“We deserved to have kicked more than one goal. We were missing eight of our best 15 players, including our two key forwards Matthew Knox and Jarryd Lynch.

“Isaac Trickey did his hamstring in the rst

track,” he said. “Hopefully that will improve in the next three to four weeks. We have four weeks of games we could win.

“If we can win three of them, it will give us condence and you never know what will happen.”

Kyneton returned to the winners’ list with a 21.13 (139) - 18.9 (117) win over Castlemaine.

Alik Magin continued his good form with six goals, while Mitch Scholard kicked ve goals.

In the A-grade netball, the Bulldogs drew with Sandhurst 38-38, while the Tigers had a massive win over Castlemaine 59-29.

e Sunbury Lions, including Ruth Smith (pictured), extracted some revenge on Saturday for last year’s grand nal loss to Melton in Ballarat Netball League A grade.

e Lions got o to a slow start, with the Bloods leading 13-11 at quarter-time. at got the Lions going – they responded with a 26-5 goal second quarter.

Aer the main break, the Lions restricted the Bloods to just 10 goals while nailing 41 of their own for a nal scoreline of 78-28.

Chloe Curran shot 44 goals for the Lions, with Lauren Gilchrist best-on-court at wing defence.

Erratic Sharks nally get it all right For the rst time this season Rupertswood played four quarters of football on their terms in the Riddell District Football League.

It has been an up-and-down start to the season for the Sharks, who had an up day against Melton Centrals on Saturday in a 23.7 (145) - 4.8 (32) win.

e Sharks were able to move the ball easily, which resulted in the side’s rst 100-point tally of the season.

Coach Ben Jordan said his side’s ball movement was a real positive.

“Our focus was on getting back to our style of football,” Jordan said.

“We started the game with condence and once we started to get goals, we were away.

“In other games we had missed easy shots and weren’t able to impact the scoreboard.

“at wasn’t the case against Melton; we went back to the basics.”

Leigh Brennan kicked six goals and showed some of his form from last season, while Brett Chambers also bobbed up with six.

“Brett is one who can play in many positions and we decided to play him forward on Saturday,” Jordan said.

“He has kicked a lot of goals for other clubs.“Leigh, when up and about, is very

dangerous. He had been a little o the boil but in this game he held his marks.

“All the boys have been working hard and some have picked up some form.”

e Sharks sit 3-2 going into the interleague break.

“We’re reasonably happy with where we are, but we were disappointed with the games

against Sunbury Kangaroos and Diggers Rest, where we weren’t competitive,” Jordan said.

In other results, Diggers Rest bounced back with a thrashing of Woodend-Hesket, Sunbury Kangaroos remain undefeated aer beating Wallan, Romsey smashed Kilmore, Riddell took the points against Lanceeld and Broadford beat Rockbank.

is weekend the RDFL takes on the Nepean Football League in interleague matches at Tony Clarke Reserve.

It was a tale of two halves for Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League match against Melton on Saturday night.

e Lions were outworked and outplayed in the rst half, especially in the rst quarter when play was interrupted when the siren went o mid quarter.

Coach Rick Horwood’s disgust at the team’s eort was clear as some of his quarter-time spray was heard halfway across the ground.

But a goal just before the half-time siren saw the Lions in front at the main break. ey exerted control to put the score on the board in the third quarter and the young backline stood tall in the last, going on to win 12.10 (82) - 6.9 (45).

Horwood said the rst half of football

was his team’s worst of the season so far. “It was disappointing as we had planned for Melton to start well,” he said.

“Melton played well early last week and we knew it would happen again.

“We didn’t stand up and the eort was very poor. It was the worst half this year.”

e Lions turned the match around in the third quarter.

“It was how we wanted to play,” Horwood said. “We won the contested football and inside-50s and captain Andrew Duhau and Greg Hay stood up and led the way in the third quarter.”

Horwood was full of praise for his defence in the last quarter.

“e rst 12-13 minutes in the last quarter they stood tall,” he said.

“Trent Stead was playing his second

game, Tanner Bell was playing his third and Stephen Treweek was playing his 10th.

“ere are some good signs.”e young players will need to continue

to step up over the next few weeks, with key defender Adam Short set to miss six to eight weeks with an ankle injury.

e Lions enter the interleague break 3-2.“I’m happy with 3-2 and see it as a pass

mark, although it would have been nice to be 4-1,” Horwood said.

“We have a crucial block aer the week o playing Redan, Bacchus Marsh and North Ballarat City.

“It’s exciting.”e Lions women’s side continued its

winning start to the season, easily beating Manor Lakes Manor Lakes 13.15 (93) - 1.1 (7) on Saturday night.

Woodend Cricket Club is searching for a coach for the new Gisborne and District Cricket Association season.

Club president Ronan Hume said last season’s coach, Adam Johnstone, had stood down for personal reasons.

“Adam has work and family commitments, which made it hard for him to coach the side as well,” Hume said. “He works as reghter, so he thought it was best that he should stand down. He will still play, just not coach.”

Woodend nished on top of the McIntyre Cup ladder last season before being knocked out in the opening round of the nals.

Hume is hoping the new coach will help the side take the next step.

“We would prefer a playing coach but will look at everyone,” he said.

“We are open to the person not having coaching experience – it’s about getting the right person.”

B-grade side Rupertswood is also advertising for a senior coach.

Applications for the Woodend job close on June 30. Contact Ronan on 0417 552 247 or [email protected]

Woodend looks for new coach

It has been a big couple of weeks for two of Riddell Umpires’ most experienced ocials.

Robert Semmens and Tim Rath, with more than 2000 umpiring games between them, celebrated senior milestones in the opening ve weeks of the Riddell District Football League season.

In round two, Semmens became the rst eld umpire at Riddell Umpires to ociate 400 senior games.

Semmens started umpiring on the boundary in the Federal League, which was linked to the VFL reserve grade.

Tim Rath, who has the second most senior games behind Semmens, umpired his 300th senior game during Lanceeld and Riddell’s match on Saturday.

Only eight Riddell umpires have reached the 300 senior game mark.

Riddell Umpires’ Chris Stead said it was an amazing feat by both the men.

“Robert claims to have umpired more than 1500 games … Rath has umpired eight senior grand nals over his career.”
