Sy was toe ’n tweedejaar BSc-studentaandieUniversiteitStellen-bosch.

’nDag laterhetdieeerste toetsne-gatief teruggekom.

My le-wensmaat was elke dag by my ommy te ondersteun.

New farming academyoffers full bursariesA newly launched Agro-ecologyAcademy based in Stellenboschseeks to increase the sustainabilityof local foodsystemswhileaddress-ing the youth unemployment cri-sis. On offer is a rare opportunityfor school-leavers without matric,to gain a nationally-recognisedqualification leading to a life-longcareer with opportunities forgrowth.

Organic farming is a growing fieldin South Africa, with recent researchshowing that demand far outstripssupply in South Africa. Eric Swarts,a local organic farmer and land re-form beneficiary, who has been farm-ing on the Annandale Road near Stel-lenbosch for the past 12 years, con-firms this: “At the moment I havemorepeoplewantingmyproduce thanI can possibly supply.”At the same time, the Winelands re-

gion is battling with high levels ofyouth unemployment, which in turnleads to many other social problems.Luke Metelerkamp, a researcher atthe Sustainability Institute says: “Na-tionally, youth unemployment is ataround 60%. But, statistically, ayoung adult with some form of terti-ary qualification is six times less like-ly to be unemployed than one withoutmatric. This highlights the need totrain young people in areas wherethere is a skills shortage.“Our vision for this programme is

to create a supportive environment inwhich the youth, who would other-

wise battle to find any form of mean-ingful employment, can embark on askills development journey. This notonly sets themon ameaningful careerpath, but also helps to make agricul-ture and the wider food system moresustainable in the long run. It’s aboutcreating livelihoods with real pur-pose – qualifying people to help solvethe problem of providing safe, nutri-tious food to all South Africans.”This fully-funded, nationally-recog-

nised course will help graduates finda job in farming or start their ownbusiness.Courses on offer include mixed-

farming systems and a farming man-agement qualification.Over the three-year course, stu-

developed a standard operatingprocedure (SOP) for event appli-cations in order to reduce thewaiting period for events to beprocessed.Previously, the minimum no-

Spotting businessopportunitiesManypeople say, “Iwouldlove to start my own busi-ness, but I do not knowwhat kind of business todo”.

There are different waysto look into the matter, butsome guidelines may justhelpyou tomove in the rightdirection.Sometimes it is worth-

while to look for the kind ofwork thatmost people are reluctant to do,and you can do business by offering thatservice. Because people do not like to doit, they are usually willing to pay some-body else to do it for them, for examplecleaning services or removing gardenrefuse. One can also look at the quality of prod-

ucts or services. Say you look at washingpegs and you know that you have the skillto produce better quality pegs than theones available, it means the possibilityfor a business exists. Or you are not satis-fied with the service you receive fromyour garden services company and youknow you can do a better job.Or be on the lookout for a specific prob-

lem or need for which many peo-ple do not really have a solution.Maybe they have a need for trans-port to the airport or to have elec-tric equipment such as hair dry-ers, washing machines, etc. re-paired. If you have the skills tosupply the need, it may becomeyour businessOne of the most important as-

pects to consider though, iswhether your business willmatchyourpersonality and if you

have adequate skills and experience tosupply quality products and/or servicesin the particular kind of business. It willnot work to start a food-related businesssuch as baking or catering if you hate theidea of working in a kitchen. Similarlydo not consider building in cupboards ifyou are not practical at all.Furthermore you have to consider

whether there is a market and a need forwhat you would like to offer or produce. There must be a need for large enough

quantities of your product or service ata reasonable profit to make for a viablebusiness.

Beyers can bring glory to Maties sideThe FNB Maties might havenarrowly missed out on a placein this year’s FNB Varsity CuppresentedbySteinhoff Interna-tional, but hardworking flank-er Beyers de Villiers can stillbring home an award to Matie-land.

De Villiers is one of three play-ers tohavebeennominatedasFor-ward That Rocks, alongside JasonKlaasen of UCT and CJ Vellemanof NMMU. Interestingly, all threeare blindside flankers and areamong the top try-scorers in thecompetition. This is the third season for Bey-

ers in the Varsity Cup and sincemaking his debut against UJ in2013, he has played more than 20matches for theMaties and scored

an impressive eight tries. He played two seasons of first

team rugby at the famous PaarlBoys High and then started study-ing at Stellenbosch University. In2011 and 2012 he played age-grouprugby for Western Province andin 2013 he donned the famous ma-roon jersey in the world’s tough-est university rugby competition. The soft-spoken Beyers earned

his B.Com degree in managementscience at the end of last year andis currently enrolled for the post-graduate diploma in project man-agement at Stellenbosch Univer-sity’s business school. When hewalked over the stage during hisgraduation ceremony he joinedthe ranks of a select few personsto have represented the universi-ty in the Varsity Cup, while also

earning a top-class degree. He credits his solid season to

having learnt a tremendousamount playing alongside greatplayers such as Helmut Lehmanand Louis Jordaan. Though hewill not say anything to the effect,it is clear that he has grown intothe role of elder statesman andeven captained the Maties whenregular captain Wilhelm van derSluys was unable to do so.All Matie fans are urged to go

and visit the Varsity Cup Face-book page and go vote for Beyersbefore voting closes on 13 April.

Zim Sevens hone skills in StellenboschTHYS LOMBARD

The Zimbabwean sevens team, or “TheCheetahs” as they are affectionatelyknown among their supporters, did theirpreparations for the international sevenscircuit at Stellenbosch.

The Zim team participated in Pool F in theHong Kong Sevens last weekend. They are cur-rently in 19th place on the international log.

Seventeen players formed part of the squadthat honed their skills at the world-class facili-ties of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport(SAS), where they rubbed shoulders with theBlitzbokke, who call Stellenbosch their home.

Travelling with the squad, Zimbabwean di-rector of rugby, Bright Chivandire, was full ofpraise for the South African Rugby Union(Saru) who invited the squad to prepare herein South Africa. He noted that sevens is stilla young sport in Zimbabwe, so being able totrain with the best in the world, can only im-prove the skills and mind-set of the players.

He said that the South African players andcoaches embraced the opportunities to sharewith the Zimbabwean players and they were“humbled by the fact that they were happy towork with us and help Zimbabwe to preparefor this qualification tournament”.

Twenty-year-old Riaan O’Neill said it was agreat experience to train against the Blitzbok-ke and the SA Academy side. Fortunate Chi-pendu,whohavebeenplaying for theCheetahsfor 12 years, said that they have been tryingfor three years to qualify for the world circuitand said the confidence is high after the camp.He is hopeful that the short visit to Stellen-bosch may just be the missing ingredient theyneeded for a major breakthrough.

In Hong Kong, the Cheetahs played in thetwelve-team second-tier competition whereRussia and Spain are the representatives fromEurope, Papua New Guinea and Tonga fromOceania, Zimbabwe and Tunisia from Africa,Mexico and Guyana from North America andtheCaribbean,UruguayandBrazil fromSouthAmerica and hosts Hong Kong and Korea from

Asia.Zimbabwe were drawn in Pool F where they
