Vorwort
of the English Language (CGEL = Quirk, Leech, Greenbaum & Svartvik 1985) empfiehlt sich die

Fußnote 7 in Satz 1). In den
Baumstruktren werden der Konvention folgend keine Satzzeichen verwendet.
Die Sätze wurden aus authentischen englischen Textquellen ausgewählt, in Einzelfällen
gekürzt und syntaktisch analysiert von Marlene Bartosch, Vanessa Bauer, Julia Becker, Laura
Burks, Flavio Culmone, Thomas Ebner, Sophia Ergenzinger, Marie-Claire Guntram, Samuel
Harte, Antonia Jahr, Daniela Jaki, Özlem Kocabas, Julia Kuhn, Sophia Paintner, Martina Rohm,
All remaining flaws are our own.

wie it oder there:
The lady who was always feeding the pigeons in the park walked around the
lake with its majestic trees.
She walked there.
o Den Satz durch Weglassen von Einheiten auf die zentrale Aussage reduzieren.
Diese entspricht häufig Subjekt – Verb – Objekt. Die weglassbaren Satzglieder
sind in der Regel Adverbialien.
When he came home, Tom quickly opened the fridge.
When he came home (A), Tom (S) quickly (A) opened (V) the fridge (Od).
o Stellung von Wörtern/Elementen im Satz verändern (z.B. als Adverbialien-Test)
Yesterday, the guests arrived. The guests arrived yesterday.
Zunächst die Verben suchen und anhand dieser die clauses (= Teilsätze) identifizieren.
Clauses enthalten in der Regel mindestens ein Verb und können – wie im Beispiel unten
– auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen im Verhältnis zum Gesamtsatz liegen.
When he came home, Tom quickly opened the fridge.
[When he came home] & [Tom quickly opened the fridge]
A S A V Od im Gesamtsatz
My friend (S) is (V) a teacher (Cs)!
Anhand der bisher analysierten Sätze eine Liste typischer Fehler machen (z.B. sind be,
have und do keine full verbs, sondern primary verbs).

seems an entirely legitimate way to try to deepen our understanding of the world and our
relation to it.

Anmerkungen
die Bedeutung ‚sehr viel‘ ausdrücken – z.B. in I do love it so (vgl. www.lexico.com/definition/so;
tribes besteht (= the Seminoles and the Cherokees are the two tribes).
7 Man könnte hier auch angeben, dass es sich um einen Eigennamen (proper noun) handelt.
8 Da accept […] as […] auch als type II prepositional verb klassifiziert werden kann, ist eine multiple analysis möglich. In diesem Fall läge aber nicht wie in den meisten Fällen ein prepositional object (Oprep) vor,
sondern ein prepositional object complement (Co-prep) in Form der NP the only alternative to
extermination.

Anmerkungen
1 Der bestimmte Artikel the ist Teil des Eigennamens (proper noun) The Guardian und auch Bestandteil des
Logos der Zeitung. Im Gegensatz zum vorliegenden Text wird er in der Regel groß geschrieben, was den Eigennamencharakter betont. Alternativ könnte man gegebenenfalls eine Analyse als NP mit dtm: det the
und head: noun Guardian ansetzen, wobei Guardian einen Eigennamen (proper noun) darstellt.
2 Man könnte hier auch einen elliptischen Relativsatz which were seen by the Guardian ansetzen.
3 Gegebenenfalls könnte hier auch ein that-clause mit elliptischem that angesetzt werden. Vorzuziehen ist
jedoch die Analyse der tatsächlich realisierten Konstruktion, wie hier dargestellt.
4 Bei allen vier Wortsequenzen handelt es sich um Komposita, da sie z.B. nicht unterbrochen werden
können und die Pluralbildung nur für die Gesamtkonstruktion erfolgt. Zu den Kriterien für Komposita siehe
Sanchez-Stockhammer (2018), English Compounds and their Spelling, Cambridge University Press, S. 57.

Anmerkungen
1 Eine Interpretation von emerge from als prepositional verb mit the dark depths of the cave als zugehöriges
Oprep kann aufgrund der örtlichen, nicht-idiomatischen Bedeutung und dem Nichtfunktionieren des Passiv-
Tests ausgeschlossen werden.
2 Grundsätzlich könnte das conjoint auch auf der funktionalen Ebene angesetzt werden (z.B. als head conjoint);
es scheint jedoch üblicher, conjoints auf der formalen Ebene zu analysieren. Alternativ zur dargestellten
Analyse könnte man soap and water auch als Od: NP – head: noun conjoint mit noun1 soap, conj and und
noun2 water analysieren.

Anmerkungen

In diesem
Fall könnte die VP ganz regulär analysiert werden.

6) For doctors treating patients with COVID-19, the pressures of managing a pandemic illness are
exacerbated by the fact that their North Star for treatment decisions – peer-reviewed reports in
medical journals – are also facing steep challenges in finding ways to publish reliable information with
far less time than they are accustomed to having.
(Lösung auf der nächsten Seite)
Anmerkungen
1 Hierbei handelt es sich um einen -ing-participle clause. Alternativ könnte man hier stattdessen auch einen
elliptischen Relativsatz ansetzen, in welchem das Relativpronomen (who/that) und das Verb (are)
ausgelassen sind.
2 Man könnte hier auch angeben, dass es sich um einen Eigennamen (proper noun) handelt.
3 Genau genommen handelt es sich hierbei um einen -ing-participle clause.
4 Beim that-clause handelt es sich um eine Apposition, da er referenzidentisch mit der vorangehenden Teil
der NP ist (The fact is that their North Star […]).
5 Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Kompositum.
6 Medical journals wird hier als (adj+n) Kompositum analysiert. Alternativ könnte man die NP auch
analysieren als premod: adj medical und head: noun journals.
7 Discontinuous VP are […] facing; unterbrochen durch die Adverbiale also (siehe die analoge Analyse in Satz
3). Die Pluralform are in diesem Satz aus der TIME (https://time.com/5851849/coronavirus-science-
advice/, 14.09.2020) ist eigentlich grammatikalisch inkorrekt, da North Star, das head des Subjekts, im
Singular steht. Vermutlich fand hier eine Verwechslung mit der Apposition peer-reviewed reports in medical
journals statt, die im Plural ist und direkt vor dem Verb steht.
8 Less ist ein determiner im Komparativ. Die Grundform dieses quantifiers wäre little. Hinzu kommt in diesem
(= -ing-participle cl) ergibt.

Anmerkungen
1 It ist eine semantisch leere dummy-Struktur, die den Objekt-Slot grammatisch realisiert und später von to
concentrate on drills that afternoon aufgegriffen und semantisch gefüllt wird.
at five). Hier wäre zu diskutieren, ob five das head einer Phrase darstellt, welche die postmodifizierende PP
o’clock enthält, denn CGEL kennt keine numeral phrase.
5 Konventionalisierte Abkürzung von of the clock. Grundsätzlich wäre auch eine etymologisch motivierte
Analyse von o‘ clock als PP mit prep o‘ und prepC: NP – head: noun clock möglich. In der gewählten Analyse
wird o’clock jedoch analog zu hours (wie in der alternativen Zeitangabe seventeen hundred hours) als noun
analysiert.
postmodifizierender PP of the door. Allerdings müsste hierfür nicht vorhandenes Material ergänzt werden,
was die Lösung weniger überzeugend macht.

Anmerkungen
1 Das Prädikat besteht aus den Satzgliedern eines clause minus dem Subjekt. Hier liegt ein predicate conjoint
vor, da das Subjekt im Teilsatz (she) cast upon him […] thoughts elliptisch ist. Alternativ wäre eine Analyse
als sentence bestehend aus clause 1 (She […] spoke), conj und clause 2 bis zum Ende des Satzes mit
elliptischem she (S: NP – head: pron) möglich.
2 Alternativ zur Analyse von cast upon him als Verb + Adverbiale ist auch die Analyse als prepositional verb
(prep v) cast upon und darauffolgendes prepositional object (Oprep) him möglich.

times.
3 Die Phrase in 2005 ist eine Verkürzung der PP in the year 2005. Innerhalb des prepC: NP enthält die Vollform
the (dtm: det), year (head: noun) und die Apposition 2005 (numeral).

Anmerkungen
Alternativ könnte man notably aufgrund seiner
Verschiebbarkeit ggf. auch aus dem PPconjoint herausziehen und als Adverbiale (A: AdvP – head: adv) auf der
Ebene des Satzes ansetzen. Allerdings verschöbe sich der Fokus von notably dann weg vom Partizip
distanced hin zum Gesamtsatz (vgl. Notably, they have become distanced.).
3 Man könnte hier auch angeben, dass es sich um einen Eigennamen (proper noun) handelt.
4 Da die VP laut CGEL 2.28 nur verbale Elemente enthalten darf, wird not hier auf der Ebene der Satzglieder
angesiedelt.
5 Hier könnte auch ein elliptischer Relativsatz (which is not shared by […]) angesetzt werden.
6 Mr Cameron wird hier als eine zusammengehörige Einheit behandelt, die im Genitiv steht und dadurch die Funktion eines determinative erfüllt. Der Status als zusammengehörige Einheit kann z.B. durch Ersetzen mit
his ermittelt werden.
7 Alternativ ist eine Analyse von European People’s party grouping als Determinativkompositum aus dem
proper noun European People’s party [sic] und dem Determinatum (noun) grouping möglich.

enthalten (wobei dieser in den letzten drei clauses elliptisch ist).

Anmerkungen
1 Genau genommen handelt es sich hierbei um einen -ing-participle clause. Eine alternative Analyse als
relative clause mit elliptischem who were ist möglich.
elliptischem which are.

Anmerkungen
comparative clauses laut CGEL 15.66 häufig elliptisch sind (than the human mind is). In diesem Fall wäre
than eine subordinating conjunction.

Anmerkungen
laut CGEL 9.58 (Fußnote b) stehen „prepositions of exception and addition” häufig vor clauses.

1 Das Partizip discovering im -ing-participle clause discovering which […] line hat hier sowohl nominale
Eigenschaften (das Auftreten nach der Präposition of, auf die prototypischerweise eine NP folgt) als auch
verbale Eigenschaften (nämlich die Tatsache, dass auf der Satzgliedebene ein Objekt darauf folgt).
2 Which ist hier kein Relativpronomen.
3 Elliptischer Relativsatz (the things which/that we believe).

Anmerkungen
1 Genau genommen handelt es sich hier um einen -ing-participle clause.
2 Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Kompositum.
3 Genau genommen handelt es sich hier um einen -ing-participle clause. Die Adverbiale ist in diesem Fall
nicht wie sonst üblich fakultativ, da spend in der metaphorischen Bedeutung ‚Zeit verbringen‘ üblicherweise
eine Angabe des Ortes (spend two hours in the park) oder der Aktivität (spend the whole afternoon ice-
skating) erfordert.

Anmerkungen
1 Alternativ wäre auch eine Analyse denkbar, in der one als dtm: det fungiert und das elliptische niece als
eigentlicher head eingefügt wird. Vorzuziehen ist jedoch die Analyse des vorhandenen Materials.
2 Man könnte hier auch angeben, dass es sich um einen Eigennamen (proper noun) handelt.
3 Gegebenenfalls könnte man hier auch einen elliptischen Relativsatz ansetzen (who was called Barbara
Smith by name).
4 Both […] and […] ist ein correlative coordinator, dessen Erstelement CGEL als endorsing item klassifiziert.
Alternativ wäre gegebenenfalls auch eine Analyse als conjunction denkbar.
