OCLC (OCLC Online Computer Library Center) Academic Library Manifesto 2009 - Support for the Research Process
calls for academic libraries to
“reassess all library job descriptions and qualifications to ensure that training and hiring encompass the skills, education, and experience needed to support new modes of research“

Change is the only Constant in Life
Let`s enjoy our accomplishments - but
Libraries are early adopters of technologies

What do our users want?
Change is driven by users‘ expectations
Let‘s ask Abbey!
• Online-library
• That learns what I like
• Multimedia
• Everything quick and easy
• Be able to add my own stuff
• Share other peoples‘ stuff
• Do it all from my iPhone or eBook reader
• More mashed up contents
• Semantic tagging
• Real time information
• Augmented reality
• Geospacial tagging
• Interactive touch screen
- AND I WANT IT NOW -

Areas of Change
• Changes in higher educationBachelor/master courses
• Changes in technologyNetworking, ubiquitious computing, gesture based computing, cloud, grid
• Change in Communication needs Change in expectancy of experiencing: people are
finding new ways to describe, explain, and interact
with the world around them
• Communication and Interfacing
• Data Management, Dissemination and Data Mining
• Library as Learning Environment
• Collection Development

Communication and Interfacing
Mobile apps are no more the direct translation of the desktop/web applications to a mobile environment
Apps in the sense off iphone or Android apps will dominate end user applications
increasingly users will be coming to the library expecting to use their own devices rather than the library’s computers
web experience can be tied to physical locations, as with QR codes
more and more library technology infrastructure moves into the Cloud WorldCat, IT system hosting
Augmented reality
Gb/s Networks throughout the world
Any kind of library alerts
Catalogues and search engines using semantic techniques, including blogs and social networks

User interfaces might look different i.e.
user friendly interfaces by Web 2.0/3.0 and social networking tools
• integrating library resources into user workflows
•building community around library resources
•helping users to manage their own library
•single interface to multiple resources

Communication and Interfacing – Ubiquitous Computing Mark Weiser 1991
1989: $150033MHz, 20MIPS
2008: $0.5020MHz, 20MIPS
Everything you can buy will have an embedded microchip able to interact with the rest of the world
… creating the „Internet of Things“

Communication and Interfacing – The Internet of Things
In computing, the Internet of things, also known as the Internet of objects, refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. It is described as a self-configuring wireless network of sensors whose purpose would be to interconnect all things. The concept is attributed to the former Auto-ID Center, founded in 1999, based at the time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Wikipedia

Communication and Interfacing – The Internet of Things – SpimesDavid Orban http://vimeo.com/8885011
Spime is the name – coined by SF-author Bruce Sterling – of an object,
• knowing its own location in space and time (space and time spime)
• having memory and computational capabilities
• containing some kind of sensors to perceive characteristics of themselves or the world around them
Currently: # cell phones ~ # human beings (~109)
Very soon: # sensors in autonomous agents # human beings

Spimes in a library
•books knowing and communicating when to be taken back to the library
•free chair making itself known to a meandering student – i.e. to his/her cell phone - looking for a place in the library

Data Management, Dissemination and Data Mining
up to now: provision of published data - books, journals, databases
Present and future:
Provision of all kinds of data … published, non-published, multimedia, primary research data
Analysis of all kinds of data … data mining
Dissemination of all kinds of data … publishing consultancy, open access, repositories cloud

Data Management, Dissemination and Data Mining - Catalogues
“Up to now librarians are committed to building their own ‘information ecosystem’ that is self-contained and pure and free from contaminants, like a locally-owned, socially conscious information utility”http://litablog.org/2010/07/lita-top-tech-trends-ala-2010/

Interfaces might look different

•touch screen
•voice recognition based

Information Literacy Transliteracy
Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital social networks www.transliteracy.com
Globalisation•Language skills•Collaboration between libraries•Collaboration within the university/college/polytechnic/institution: embedded librarian

Collection Development
Budget pressuresWe shall have to do more with lessefficiency
Preference for electronic accessIn some decades from now perhaps e-only will have replaced (almost) all print material
Patron driven collection development models•Pay per view•acquisition on multiple access
Licensing issues•course e-reserves•course management systems

… so what?!
Libraries will•provide a context of collaboration and communication•constantly embed services into their patrons‘ workflows•have an organisational structure that is fluent and flexible
Librarians will •be proficient in essential methods of knowledge management and share them•be creative, soft skilled, experimental and open•be lifelong learners
Online services will be as important as services in the library buildingThe libraries toolset for knowledge management will be •comprehensive •up to date
