History
The Land Bank Society edifice was designed by Italian-born architect Henry Marconi; built 1853-58 (engraving ca. 1855).
Neo-Renaissance style of the building referring to Italian architecture was inspired by Vincenzo Scamozzi’s Procuratorie Nuove in Venice. (photo ca. 1907)

The only known photo from the pre-war period - 1937
The main building was partially destroyed in 1939 and almost completely demolished in 1944 (70%),
the Mazowiecka Arcade survived WW II nearly intact…

The building of the former Land Bank Society was rebuilt in 1949-50 and 1962-71. Since 1973, it has hosted the National Ethnographic Museum.
The Mazowiecka Arcade incorporated by new structures, remains intact.

A broken casting was originally fitted and repaired using RC mortar and painted lime mortar as well

The arcade is a unique structure in the street that survived the war.
No restoration in the last 80 years.
The arcade wall is a rare relic of pre-war Warsaw.
The arcade should remain as a kind of „witness for history” incorporated in modern surroundings.
Guidelines for restoration
• Improvement of aesthetics
• Creation of an interesting background for owner’s needs (exhibitions, workshops, other activities)
• Creation of an attractive point within the street
• Conception of guidelines for further architectural arrangements
Owner’s expectations
• Strict protection of historic substance and values. • Petrification of the wall in its current shape with some limited
interventions. • Elimination of current risks (e.g. new gutters, anti-graffiti layers)
