Schon lange wünschte sich Daniela Fantini eine schöne Bar und ein Hotel für Pella. „Ein Designhotel in der Nachbarschaft erlaubt uns, unsere Geschäftskunden unterzubringen“, er-läutert die junge Unternehmerin, die die Firma in der zweiten Generation gemeinsam mit ihrem Cousin Luigi lei-tet. „Hinzu kommen private Erho-lungssuchende, Tendenz steigend.“ Wie es dazu kam? „An der Piazza stand ein altes Gebäude leer. Das wollten wir renovieren, weil es uns für ein Hotel passend erschien.“ Ankauf, Genehmigungen und Realisie-rung haben sich dabei als komplizier-ter erwiesen als gedacht. Doch das konnte Daniela Fantini nicht davon abhalten, das Projekt „Casa Fantini Lake“ weiter zu verfolgen und Piero Lissoni mit der Renovierung des Alt-baus und dem Entwurf eines neuen Anbaus zu beauftragen.

Dass hier im Jahr 1947 die Brüder Giovanni und Ersilio eine Armaturen-firma gründeten, hat neben der Nähe zu Mailand und seinen Handelsachsen einen industriegeschichtlich interes-santen Hintergrund. Die Gegend ist seit Jahrhunderten bekannt für ihre Metallverarbeitung. In unmittelbarer Nähe sitzen Alessi und andere Unter-nehmen, die Töpfe und Besteck, aber auch Blechblasinstrumente oder eben Armaturen herstellen.

EIN HOTEL FÜR PELLAEin direkt am Seeufer gelegenes Fir-mengelände wie das von Fantini ist nicht nur in Pella etwas Besonderes. Wenn es neben seiner Toplage auch noch mit hochwertiger Architektur glänzt und mit einem frisch eröffne-ten 5-Sterne-Boutiquehotel gleich ne-benan, dann möchte man recht gerne wissen, wie so etwas möglich wurde.

Seit vielen Jahren schon arbeitet Fantini mit Piero Lissoni zusam-men. Zunächst war dessen Ex-

pertise als Designer gefragt: Messestände, Grafik und Produkte. In der Folge beauftragte Fantini den Mailänder Architekten auch als Bau-meister am Ort des Firmensitzes, in Pella, mit der Planung (Umbau und Anbau) eines Hotels an der lokalen Piazza und der Renovierung der Be-standsbauten des Headquarters.Das Dorf mit seinen knapp 1 000 Ein-wohnern liegt am oberitalienischen Ortasee mit Blick auf die Insel San Giulio, das Städtchen Orta am gegen-überliegenden Ostufer und die nord-piemontesischen Hügel und Berge im Hintergrund. Ein ruhiger Urlaubsort in der Provinz von Novara und beliebtes Ausflugsziel der Mailänder. Von der Hauptstadt der Lombardei sind es ge-rade einmal 85 km.

Dieser ließ Alt und Neu in einen Dialog treten von Stein, Holz und Glas. Der vorhandene Steinbau wurde für ein Café (Eingangsebene) und zwei Suiten (obere Ebenen) bestimmt. Als Kon-trast dazu ein Anbau für den Gäste-trakt mit grafisch strukturierter Fassade. Seine raumhohen Fenster und verglasten Balkonbrüstungen schaffen Transparenz und holen die ruhige Atmosphäre des Sees nach in-nen: Alle Gästezimmer weisen aufs Wasser. „Das Hotel will eine relaxte Atmo-sphäre vermitteln. Man soll sich hier wie zu Hause fühlen”, kommentiert Piero Lissoni seinen Entwurf. Explizit geht das Erdgeschoss mit Frühstücks-bereich und Lounge nahtlos über in den Außenbereich mit Pool und Grün-anlagen: 1 200 m² Indoor verschmel-zen mit 700 m² Outdoor.

LEIDENSCHAFT FÜR DAS DETAIL Für die Inneninrichtung wählte der Architekt überwiegend eigene Möbel italienischer Hersteller (Living, Porro u. a.). Die Betthäupter ließ er aus recy-celtem Holz fertigen. In den Gästezim-mern und -bädern kamen blaues Glas, Harz und Fliesen zum Einsatz; im Gar-ten – am Pool und auf den Wegen – grauer Beola-Stein.Folgt man dem Ufer vom Hotelgarten aus nach Norden, gelangt man zum kleinen Park des Familienanwesens (den charmanten Altbau bewohnt Da-niela Fantini) und von dort direkt zum Firmensitz. „Die Erneuerung des Headquarters wurde durch die Umstrukturierung unserer Produktionsabläufe erforder-lich“, erklärt die Unternehmerin. Lissonis Aufgabe bestand darin, die in Form, Größe und Alter unter-schiedlichen Gebäude auf einen ge-stalterischen Nenner zu bringen sowie eine Rezeption, Büros für For-schung und Entwicklung und einen großzügigen Showroom zu integrie-ren. Von den rund 12 000 m² nimmt die Fläche für die Produktpräsentati-on fast die Hälfte ein. Es sind die Materialien und Farben, die das Ensemble zusammenhalten und ein ruhiges Gesamtbild erzeugen: dunkelgraues U-Glas und Beton im

Außenraum; weiße Wände und Harz-böden im Innenraum. Wie schon beim Hotel, so liegt auch hier die Stärke des Konzepts in der Aufwertung der Seeseite. Mehr Fens-teröffnungen und Verglasungen gehen nicht. Das Landschaftspanora-ma, das sich von der Uferlage aus genießen lässt, ist die ungewöhnlich exponierte Ausrichtung allemal wert. Über einen Steg lässt sich die Firma sogar auf dem Wasserweg erreichen. Wer jedoch mit dem Auto ankommt, der erblickt den Sitz der Fantini zuerst einmal von hinten. Vom Parkplatz/Warenanlieferung führt ein überdach-ter Weg schnurgerade Richtung See

zum Empfang. Auf der linken Seite ein kleiner Fluss, dann auf beiden Seiten elegante Industriebauten, makellos, minimalistisch restauriert. Die Atmo-sphäre könnte idyllischer nicht sein. Dazu tragen selbstverständlich auch die Grünanlagen bei, die auf dem ge-samten Gelände die Handschrift eines Landschaftsplaners tragen: Paghera Green Service.Technisches Know-how, Qualitäts-kontrolle, Design sind die Schlagwör-ter, die für die Produkte von Fantini stehen. Pella is a picturesque little town on Lake Orta in Italy’s Piedmont region, and this is where fixture manufacturer Fantini is based. The ensemble of build-ings, consisting of headquarters, family mansion and company-owned hotel, is part of an overall concept created by Piero Lissoni.

Fantini has been co-operating with Piero Lissoni for many years. At first his expertise as a designer was in demand to create fair stalls, graphics and products. Then Fantini commissioned the Milanese architect also as a builder at the firm’s head office in Pella and commissioned him to plan the conver-sion as well as the annex of a hotel at the local piazza and the refurbishment of the headquarters’ existing buildings.The little town has some 1,000 inhabitants and is located at the Lago d‘Orta in Northern Italy with a view of San Giulio island, Orta town on the opposite, eastern shore, the northern Piedmontese hills and mountains in the background. It is a placid holiday resort in the Novara province and a popular destination for the Milanese. The capital of Lombardy is only 85 kilo-meters away.The fact that brothers Giovanni and Ersilio founded a fixtures company here in 1947 has an interesting background from an industrial history point of view, quite different from Milan and its trade routes being located in the vicinity. For centuries the region has been known for its expertise in metalworking. Alessi and other companies that manufacture pots and cutlery or brass instruments – or, as already mentioned, fixtures – are based in close proximity.A company site located right on the

Seeing that apart from its prime location the place also shines with top-grade architecture, plus a freshly opened five-star boutique hotel right next to it, the question arises how all this became possible.

A hotel for PellaFor a long time Daniela Fantini had wished for a beautiful bar and a hotel in Pella. The young businesswoman manages the company together with her cousin Luigi in the second gener-ation and explains: “Having a design hotel in the neighborhood enables us to accommodate our business customers. And there are also private persons seeking relaxation in increasing numbers.” How did all this come about? “At the piazza there was an old, vacant building. We wanted to renovate it because to us it seemed suitable for this purpose.”It turned out that the process of purchasing it, getting building per-missions and implementing the plan was more complex than anticipated. However, this did not prevent Daniela Fantini from carrying on with the ‘Casa Fantini Lake’ project and commission-ing Piero Lissoni to renovate the old building and design a new annex.Lissoni decided to design a combination of stone, wood and glass. The existing stone building was turned into a café at entrance level and two suites were developed on the upper levels. As a counterpoint, an annex housing the guest wing, characterized by a graphically structured façade, came into being. Its room-high windows and glazed balcony parapets create transparency and bring the calm atmosphere of the lake to the inside: all guest rooms face the water.Piero Lissoni says on his design: “The hotel is to impart a relaxed atmosphere. Guests should feel like being at home.” The ground level with breakfast area and lounge seamlessly connects with the outside with its pool and green area: 1,200 m²of indoor space merge with 700 m² outdoors.For the interiors, the architect predomi-

nantly used furniture made by Italian manufacturers (Living, Porro and others). He had the bed headboards made of recycled wood, and in the guest rooms and baths he used blue glass, resin and tiles. In the garden around the pool and on the pathways grey Beola stone was applied. Following the shore from the hotel’s garden to the North, you will traverse the small park of the family estate (Daniela Fantini lives in the charming old building) and from there you directly reach the company head-quarters.

A stone’s throw to the headquartersAs Daniela Fantini explains, “the renovation of our headquarters became necessary as a result of the reorganization of our production processes”. Lissoni’s task was to invent a common design denominator for the buildings so different in shape, size and age, and, in addition, to integrate a reception area, offices for research and development and a generous show-room. Almost half of the space, about 12,000 m² in all, is occupied by product presentation.The coherent factors of the ensemble are materials and colors. They create a calm, overall look: dark-grey, U-shaped glass and concrete outdoors, white walls and resin floors indoors.As already in the hotel, here, too, the strength of the concept lies in the upgrade of the lakefront. More window openings and glazings are simply not possible. The landscape panorama you can enjoy from the lake-side location definitely justifies the exposed orien-tation. Over a little bridge the company can even be accessed by the waterway.But when you come by car, your first glance of the Fantini headquarters will be from the rear. A protected walkway leads dead straight from the car park and goods-delivery area toward the lake and the reception. On the left there is a small creek, the – on both sides – elegant industrial buildings in pristine splendor, minimalistically renovated. You couldn’t find a more idyllic spot. The time is right. As the #MeToo move-ment against sexual assault and sexual harassment is gaining strength, this is a change long overdue. It is also good for both men and women to shift stereo-typical ideas around gender roles. It’s good for everybody because the more diverse the pool, the more talented our leaders will be. The world’s largest in-dustrialized economies show slow progress having women in leadership positions. Today two of the worst performing individual countries are Japan and Germany. In the United States women are still outnumbered by men in the most prestigious senior management positions, from Capitol Hill to boardrooms.

Looking back at design history, the German-American sculptor Elisabeth Ney (1833–1907) was most likely the first creative woman succeeding in a male-dominated field. She produced portraits of famous men such as Otto von Bismarck and Sam Houston, now exhibited at her own museum in Austin, Texas. Another creative giant was the American architect Julia Morgan (1872–1957) of California’s Hearst Castle fame. Within this timeframe in 1922, the Association of Women in Architec-ture and the Allied Arts (AWA) was formed by female students in the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, they were not allowed to join the men’s architecture fraternity. Soon thereafter AWA chapters spread all over the country, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to the University of California in Berkeley. A passion for detailsAs the dedicated businesswoman puts it: “Fantini is a company characterized by detail.
