Im Jahr 990 reiste Sigerich «der Ernste», Erzbischof von Canterbury,aus Rom in seine englische Heimatstadt zurück. Die Stationenseines Wegs hielt er in einem Tagebuch fest. Diese Beschreibungist die Grundlage der ViaFrancigena, einem Kulturweg desEuroparats. Sie verbindet Canterbury über Frankreich und dieSchweiz mit Rom.Bereits im 1. Jahrhundert nach Christus haben die Römer dieRoute eingerichtet, um die Reichsgebiete nördlich der Alpen mit Rom zu verbinden. Mit der Ausrufung von heiligen Jahrenab 1300 entwickelte sich der Weg nach Rom zur wichtigenPilgerroute. Im 17. Jahrhundert verlor er allmählich an Bedeutung,doch in jüngster Zeit wird er wiederentdeckt.

In 990 Sigeric «the Serious», Archbishop of Canterbury, travelledfrom Rome back to his home in England. He described the stopsalong the way in a diary. This description forms the basis of theViaFrancigena, a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. It runs between Canterbury and Rome via France and Switzerland.The Romans laid down the road back in the first century AD to connect the imperial lands north of the Alps with Rome. Withthe proclamation of holy years from 1300 onwards, the road toRome developed into an important pilgrimage route. It graduallybecame less important in the 17th century, but has recently been rediscovered.

Etappe 1: Pontarlier–Les Fourgs–Ste-Croix 6 Std., 22 kmIm französischen Jura führt der Weg über La Cluse-et-Mijoux (F)nach Les Fourgs (F). Nach der Grenze erreicht er Sainte-Croix.

Etappe 2: Ste-Croix–Yverdon-les-Bains 4 Std. 45 Min., 17 kmIm steilsten Stück auf dem Weg hinunter nach Yverdon-les-Bainstrifft die ViaFrancigena bei Vuitebœuf auf historische Karrgeleise.

Etappe 3: Yverdon-les-Bains–Mathod–Orbe 5 Std. 15 Min., 20 kmDie Route verlässt den Neuenburgersee über Chamblon und Mathod.Nach Boscéaz, Fundstätte römischer Mosaike, wird Orbe erreicht.

Stage 1: Pontarlier–Les Fourgs–Ste-Croix 6h, 22 kmStarting in the French Jura, the route leads via La Cluse-et-Mijoux (F) to Les Fourgs (F). After crossing the border it reachesSainte-Croix.

Stage 2: Ste-Croix–Yverdon-les-Bains 4h45, 17 kmAt the steepest part of the descent to Yverdon-les-Bains theViaFrancigena runs down historic cart tracks at Vuitebœuf.

Stage 3: Yverdon-les-Bains–Mathod–Orbe 5h15, 20 kmThe route leaves Lake Neuchâtel, and passes through Chamblon andMathod. After Boscéaz, the site of Roman mosaics, it reaches Orbe.

� Romainmôtier

Etappe 4: Orbe–Romainmôtier–Cossonay 7 Std., 26 kmDie ViaFrancigena erreicht Romainmôtier über Bretonnières. NachLa Sarraz führt sie am Ufer der Venoge entlang nach Cossonay.

Etappe 5: Cossonay–Bussigny–Lausanne 6 Std. 15 Min., 25 kmDer Weg folgt der Venoge nach Saint-Sulpice. Am Genfersee ent-lang geht es vorbei an den römischen Ruinen von Vidy nachLausanne.

Etappe 6: Lausanne–Lavaux–Vevey 5 Std. 45 Min., 20 kmVon Ouchy führt die ViaFrancigena durch das ausgedehnteWeinbaugebiet und Unesco-Weltkulturerbe Lavaux nach Vevey.

Etappe 7: Vevey–Montreux–Aigle 7 Std., 27 kmAm Genfersee entlang führt die Wanderung nach Villeneuve. ImRhonetal geht es weiter über Roche und Yvorne nach Aigle.

Stage 4: Orbe–Romainmôtier–Cossonay 7h, 26 kmThe ViaFrancigena reaches Romainmôtier via Bretonnières. AfterLa Sarraz it goes along the bank of the Venoge to Cossonay.

Stage 5: Cossonay–Bussigny–Lausanne 6h15, 25 kmThe way follows the Venoge to Saint-Sulpice. It runs along LakeGeneva, past the Roman ruins of Vidy to Lausanne.

Stage 6: Lausanne–Lavaux–Vevey 5h45, 20 kmFrom Ouchy the ViaFrancigena passes for miles through the Lavauxvineyards, a Unesco world cultural heritage site, as far as Vevey.

Stage 7: Vevey–Montreux–Aigle 7h, 27 kmThe hike follows Lake Geneva to Villeneuve, then continues upthe Rhone Valley through Roche and Yvorne to Aigle.

Etappe 8: Aigle–Massongex–St-Maurice 5 Std. 15 Min., 18 kmÜber Ollon wird Les Dévens erreicht. Bald darauf trifft dieViaFrancigena auf die Rhone und folgt ihr nach Saint-Maurice.

Etappe 9: St-Maurice–Vernayaz–Martigny 4 Std. 15 Min., 17 kmDie Wanderung führt am Fuss des Berghangs auf dem historischen«Chemin royal» über Evionnaz und Vernayaz nach Martigny.

Etappe 10: Martigny–Sembrancher–Orsières 6 Std. 15 Min., 19 kmVon Martigny führt die ViaFrancigena über Bovernier nachSembracher. Auf dem «Napoleonweg» wird Orsières erreicht.

Etappe 11: Orsières–Liddes–Bourg-St-Pierre 4 Std. 45 Min., 13 kmDie Route verläuft der Dranse entlang nach Liddes. Von dortführt ein historischer Fahrweg nach Bourg-Saint-Pierre.

Stage 8: Aigle–Massongex–St-Maurice 5h15, 18 kmThe route goes via Ollon to Les Dévens. Shortly afterwards theViaFrancigena meets the Rhone and follows it to Saint-Maurice.

Stage 9: St-Maurice–Vernayaz–Martigny 4h15, 17 kmThe road passes along the foot of the mountain on the historic«Chemin royal» through Evionnaz and Vernayaz to Martigny.

Stage 10: Martigny–Sembrancher–Orsières 6h15, 19 kmFrom Martigny the ViaFrancigena goes via Bovernier toSembracher. The «Napoleonic Way» leads to Orsières.

Stage 11: Orsières–Liddes–Bourg-St-Pierre 4h45, 13 kmThe route runs along the Dranse to Liddes. From there a historicroadway leads to Bourg-Saint-Pierre.

Etappe 12: Bourg-St-Pierre–Grd-St-Bernard 5 Std., 13 kmDiese Etappe der ViaFrancigena besitzt symbolischen Charakter:Man erreicht das Hospiz vom Grossen Sankt Bernhard und damitden höchsten Punkt auf der Pilgerreise zwischen Canterbury undRom.

Etappe 13: Grd-St-Bernard–St-Oyen/Etroubles 4 Std., 12 kmAuf der italienischen Seite des Passes führt die ViaFrancigenanach St-Rhémy (I) und dann in gleichmässigem Abstieg nach St-Oyen (I) oder Etroubles (I).

Etappe 14: St-Oyen/Etroubles–Gignod–Aosta 3 Std. 45 Min., 16 kmAuf der rechten Talseite geht es nach Gignod (I). Über die römische Fundstätte Augusta Praetoria steigt die ViaFrancigenanach Aosta (I) hinab.

Stage 12: Bourg-St-Pierre–Grd-St-Bernard 5h, 13 kmThis leg of the ViaFrancigena is highly symbolic: we reach thehospice of the Great St Bernard, the highest point on the pilgrimroute between Canterbury and Rome.

Stage 13: Grd-St-Bernard–St-Oyen/Etroubles 4h, 12 kmOn the Italian side of the pass the ViaFrancigena goes to St-Rhémy (I) and then in a steady descent to St-Oyen (I) orEtroubles (I).

Stage 14: St-Oyen/Etroubles–Gignod–Aosta 3h45, 16 kmThe ViaFrancigena runs down the right side of the valley toGignod (I), then drops down to Aosta (I) via the Roman site ofAugusta Praetoria.
