GOOGLE “SUMMER TYRES” and “195/65 R15”, and you’ll find yourself positively swamped by results. Hardly surprising given

that 19.5-inch tyres with 15-inch inner diameter and sidewall height of 12.7 cm (65 per cent of the width) have been the undisputed best-sellers on the tyre market for over a decade. Many compact cars, including VW Golf, Audi A3, Opel Astra and Seat Leon, still feature this tyre size – an integral part of every manufacturer’s product portfolio all over the world – as standard. But this bread-and-butter tyre is no longer the big money- spinner it once was. And in future,

this could be the downfall for the million-selling consumer favourite of yesteryear.

“We’re no longer investing in ad-vanced development of these standard sizes”, admit the premium manufac-turers that usually drive technology in the tyre industry. Thus sidelined, the tyres risk being limited to a budget one-size-fits-all tread compound, which could result in poorer dynamic characteristics and, naturally, com-promises in driving safety.

But we don’t want things to go that far. In our ultimate safety test, we separate the wheat from the chaff. Safety is our top priority; an in-depth

cost check to decide the economic fac-tors only follows in the second round.

Every tyre type gets a chance in our test, from budget brands to prestigious premium names. We buy the test tyres anonymously from normal tyre dealers and from the increasingly popular In-ternet suppliers. The tyres go straight from shopping cart to test track, where the 50-plus test candidates must prove their quality in wet and dry conditions.

We use a sophisticated process to measure braking distances from speeds of 100 km/h on dry roads and 80 in the wet. It’s incredible what hu-ge differences even this initial safety check brings out in the open; eight me-

tres of braking distance separate the best and worst tyres, and in wet con-ditions this safety gap extends to al-most 18 metres! At the end of a traffic jam a car fitted with Fortuna G745 would still be travel-ling at almost 50 km/h, while the same car with Bridgestone’s super-brakers would long be at a safe standstill . These poor performers we-re shown the door; only the 20 tyres with the shortest braking distances qualified for more advanced tests. Finally, we looked at cost – and weren’t surprised to

discover that safety has a price. How-ever, our test winner clearly shows that top performance is available at a very fair price. Find out the winner in the following pages.

The 15-inchers: The 15” tyres fit many compact models, like our Seat Leon test car.

ALL-YEAR TYRES

All-season tyres are increasingly popular and offer obvious benefits for us drivers:

no more fighting for appointments with tyre dealers to swap our tyres

over every six months; no second set of tyres and wheels, no storage costs.

Savings in time and money – provided this convenience doesn’t come

at the expense of safety, and even that fear has been laid to rest

after recent tests of these all-round talents in all road conditions and climate zones. They now represent a genuine

alternative, at least for compact to mid-class cars.

NO MORE CHANGES!

Fi rst , a l l 51 cand idates must pass the safety check in a qua l i fy ing round. Over severa l days, the i r brak ing d istances in emergency stops f rom 80 km/h in the wet and 100 in the dr y are measured prec ise ly ; test tyres are in terspersed wi th a contro l tyre to ensure equa l i ty.

On the wet handling course, the new Bridgestone and its second brand, Firestone, delivered convincing wet grip and were only approached by Hankook and Goodyear. Kleber and Giti fell behind as less effective in the wet despite their satisfactory grip.
