Erlauterungen zu Band III
I . Stimmtausch I . Le croisement des voix I . Crossi ng of Parts
Die
Übungen und Beispiele sind nach demselben
Prinzip gestaltet bzw. ausgewahit wie die des
II . Bandes, nur sind sie schwieriger. Nicht nur
wird die Beherrschung des zwei- und dreistimmi-
gen Stimmtauschs, mi t dem der II . Band begann,
Bandes
gegenüber noch ein erleichternder Hinweis gege-
ben. Man stelle bei jeder neuen Stimm-Gruppie-
rung zuerst fest, welchen Instrumenten jeweils die
einzelnen Stimmen zugeteilt sind, also z.
sehene in die Akt i on der Finger umsetzen. Beim
Spielen gröBerer Partitursysteme is t die Schnellig-
I I s'agit avant
The exercises and examples are selected according
to the same principle as those in Vol. II . They are,
however, more difficult . The pupil is expected to
have mastered the crossing of two and three parts
with which Vol. II began; the exercises in four
parts are now more complicated (in all four parts)
and examples of five or more parts are added. Itwill be helpful to read what was said in Vol, II in
order to appreciate the purpose behind these
exercises. But a further suggestion may be given
here to simplify matters in view of the greaterdifficulty of the exercises in Vol. II . At each new
grouping of parts the student should determine
which instrument is playing which part, e. g. in
Ex. 4 - the top part is played by the 2"<
Violinthe next by the Viola, the next by the Cello and
the bottom part by the l>i
Violin, so that thesecond and third staves are to be played by the
right hand and the first and fourth by the lef t. InChorales, the grouping alters after each pause;
similar points are easily found in other exercises.
Speed in grasping this aspect of a score is the
first and most essential prerequisite. The quicker
the eye comprehends, the qu icker the fingers
react.

rinf.*) Die Klassik verwandte bei den liölieren
Lagen
Doch
kam es auch vor, daB bei mSBiger
Hö he zuerst der
•*) The classical composers preferr ed the treble to
the tenor clef for the higher positions of the cello,
notating an octave above the actual sound.Occasionally, in a middle register, they used firstthe tenor clef and then proceeded to the treble
clef in its actual pitch (although not always so).
There was no consistency. The composers
obviously treated the matter lightly and relied
upon the player to recognise the correct position
from the context. In dubious cases, we can be
guided by the part-writing. Later, the use of the
treble clef in octave transpositions was in general
abandoned. I have found it only in Bruckner.

Louis Spohr (1784—1859): Doppel quart ett d-moll, op. 65 (1 . Satz) II . Transponierende Instrumente
19
II . Iiistruments
Transpositeurs
II . Transposing Instruments
verschiedener Stimmungen erübt werden, was
schen der Notierung in „a l ten" Schlüsseln undder transponierenden Aufschreibung, sei in
Band ,11
nachgelesen.
klargestellt. Diesem Sinn dient die partiturgemaBe
Aufschreibung der Beispiele aus den Biberschen
Violin-Sonaten; jede Note steht in dem System,
das der jeweiligen Saite zugewiesen ist. Wenn also
ponieren in verschiedenen Stimmun gen verlangt
eine scharfe Konze ntration; auBerdem scheint
mir diese Notierung die einzige Möglichkeit zu
sein, den Biberschen Notentext les- und vorstell-
bar „aufzulösen".
Le Vol. I I a présenté les modes les plus usuels de
transposition empruntés par les divers instru-
ments k vent.
Vol. I I showed the transposition of individual
wind instruments. Here the simultaneous reading
of different transpositions will be practised. Thiswill be followed up in Vol. IV with very difficultexercises and examples. For the reading of trans-
posing wind parts, scordatura and differentiation
between "ol d" C clefs and transposition , see
Vol. I I .
The scordatura Example No. 15 needs special
explanation. Scordatura must be read as real
transposi tion - as explained in V o l. I I . The Biber
Violin Sonatas are here printed in score; each
stave represents one string. If, as in Ex. 15a,
the
strings are tuned to B, F sharp, B f lat and D, the
notes on the G and D string sound a major thirdhigher, i. e. "in E", the notes on the A string awhole tone higher, i. e. "in D", and those on the
E string a whole tone lower , i. e. "in B flat". The
rapid changes and the simultaneous transposition
(for double stoppings) require great concentration.
This method of notation seems to me the only
one possible for deciphering Biber's text.

•) In "Denkmaler der Tonkunst in österreich"this E is read as belonging to the E string, i. e.
sounding D. According to the fingering it belongs
however to the A string (as the E string is used
for the B), and therefore sounds F # , otherwise il
should be written C. I believe that Biber made a
mistake here.

IIL Di e Übertragung aufs Klavier
I I I . La Transcription pour Piano II I. Score-Reading at the Piano
auf das Instrument ausfiihrlich in Band I I dar-
andere, entsprechende Literatur heranzuziehen
und am Klavier zu erarbeiten:
Duo-Sonaten jeder
Al l the necessary explanations and suggestions
for the playing of the score at the piano have been
given i n Vol. II , which should be referred to.
The number of these examples has had to be
limited for lack of space. But the student may
take works of similar nature and work out trans-criptions of them at the piano, every kind öf duet,
for example, piano trios, string trios, string
quartets, wind ensembles (e. g. Mozart SerenadeB flat K. 361, Beethoven's Septet, R. Strauss'
Serenade for wind instruments op. 7, early
classical symphonies - works which are easily
accessible.
Symphonies with fuller orchestration should not
be attempted befo re a greater assurance in read-
ing complicated wind parts has been achieved,
i . e. after Vol. IV has been studied.
