Fashionable Eco Fabrics with Transparent Labelling
More than five years have gone by since organicselection featured with a range of 200 certified
organic fabrics at MUNICH FABRIC START for the first time. Very quickly it became clear that the
need for greater ecological and social responsibility in the textile sector is a long term development
that meets with continually growing demand.
In the meantime, organicselection has become established internationally as one of the most
important sourcing platforms for ecological and socially responsible fabric innovations, also as an
online portal. Every season over 500 certified fabrics and over 100 findings are presented here – that
are not just organic but are just as fashionable as conventionally produced fabrics and findings.
In cooperation with certifiers and experts in ecological textile production MUNICH FABRIC START
also developed the trade fair’s own labelling system for organicselection that creates greater
transparency and makes it easier for trade visitors to find their way around the often confusing
array of sustainability standards and certifications in the textile sector (p. 64 et seq.). In 2012
organicselection was incorporated into ECO VILLAGE where standards organisations, certifiers
and selected manufacturers of sustainable fabrics convey their expert knowledge to the specialist
audience in lectures and individual discussions (p. 8 et seq.).
As a sourcing platform with a consistently labelled range as well as a forum for expert advice
and exchange, organicselection and ECO VILLAGE contribute, season after season, to greater
ecological conscience in the textile industry.

Modische Eco-Fabrics, transparent gekennzeichnet

AEG
SUSTAINABILITY INSIGHT
Founded in Berlin in 1883, AEG developed over the course of the 20th century into one of
the largest electrical groups in the world before the traditional firm went into decline in the
80s. Today the Swedish Electrolux Group produces “white goods” i.e. household appliances.
AEG has always seen itself as a pioneer in a market environment driven by technological and
sustainable innovation. However, last year a YouTube video caused a worldwide stir:
“The Next Black – A Film about the Future of Fashion”. How did it come about that an electrical
firm produced an elaborate film on fashion?
The film is neither about washing machines nor any other white household appliances. Instead, it
focalises design processes, sourcing, fashion production and textile innovations on a complex and
highly aesthetic level. However, it was not created entirely without washing machines. In 2013 AEG
launched a whole new product range developed to improve the eco footprint of those processes
performed by individual appliances within the household – including energy and water-saving
washing machines.
However, the Swedes realised that pure facts about cooler drying temperatures and lower water
consumption were not that riveting for the public. So the marketing experts at AEG looked for
another way to enter into a dialogue with their customers about the innovative ecological power
of the new products and the company. And while washing machines are not necessarily classic
products per se for enthusing a company’s fan base, for many the clothes washed in them are a
much more emotional matter.
In collaboration with film makers at the “House of Radon” production agency “The Next Black” was
made in less than twelve months. The 45-minute film uses extraordinary examples to demonstrate
the enthusiasm that lies in sustainable fashion innovations; underscoring artistic images with a
wonderful soundtrack and thereby proving a “conversation starter”. In any case the film has achieved
at least one goal: over half a million YouTube viewers have seen that sustainability is a seriously
pursued process at AEG and Electrolux. Hopefully, it will indeed also contribute to a greener future
in fashion, too.

SUSTAINABILITY INSIGHT
Traditionsunternehmens kam. Heute produziert der schwedische Electrolux Konzern
sogenannte „Weiße Ware“, also Haushaltsgeräte.
Furore. Sein Name: „The Next Black – A film about the Future of fashion“.
einmal zwölf Monaten „The Next Black“.

REDRESS (EN)
The Positive Power of Fashion
SUSTAINABILITY INSIGHT
The EcoChic Design Award, R Cert certification, consumer campaigns and cooperations
with industry partners – these are the key four components for Redress from Hong Kong that
have been gaining international attention over the past few years.
The Redress success story began in 2007. Since then this NGO from Hong Kong has been
committed to generating greater public awareness about eco sustainability in the textile value added
chain. The focus here primarily lies on reducing textile waste, pollution as well as water and energy
consumption in the upstream industry.
Media interest over the past few years has focused on the EcoChic Design Award. After previous
winning outfits were put into production by such renowned companies as Esprit, this year CreateHK
and Ford became high-profile partners of the award. Since 2011 Redress has awarded annual
prizes to resource-saving fashion outfits and since 2013 the awards have also been open to various
European countries.
A result of the design cooperation between the fashion award and industry is the R Cert recycled
textile Clothing Standard that is also used by Esprit in its current recycled collection. Alongside
controlling the substances contained in a labelled textile item the R Cert Standard offers consumers
the opportunity to go online and trace how a product was made and – once it is one day disposed
of – track its further recycling path.
It is not possible to see an end to the success story of Redress any time soon. This is hardly surprising
since increased use of recycled fibres in textile production is one of the declared aims of the current
12-year plan of the People’s Republic of China. It is also because Redress is collaborating with an
ever growing number of fashion designers, textile and fabric manufacturers, retailers, schools and
universities, governments, NGOs, financial institutions as well as the media. Always with the shared
aim of facilitating a sustainable fashion sector where negative impacts are minimised and positive
influences on society and the environment are strengthened.

SUSTAINABILITY INSIGHT

Dieter Overath; Fairtrade Dieter Overath; Fairtrade
Nowadays you can find products with the Fairtrade seal throughout Germany at
42,000 points of sale and in more than 20,000 catering establishments. Over 280 firms
manufacture more than 4,000 products in line with Fairtrade standards. Until now
Fairtrade concerns in the textile sector focused on cotton farmers. Companies involved
in further processing until now only needed to prove that ILO core labour standards are
observed on site. However, Fairtrade is now developing a textile standard that will go one
step further: making it possible for those working at production sites to also benefit from
Fairtrade principles, just like cotton farmers do now. Dieter Overath, Managing Director
at Fairtrade Germany, explains the new approach.
Fairtrade has announced it will be introducing a process standard comprising all stages
in the textile value added chain. What is the latest update on this?
The first draft of the standard was published in autumn 2014 and was commented on by various
stakeholders. The revised version will be tested in spring in various textile value added chains.
Our experience will then be used to fine tune the second draft.
Will the Fairtrade standard be solely applicable for cotton products or also for the
processing of textiles made with other raw materials?
No final decision has been made on this as yet. Fairtrade will consider and check both options.
Especially given the great public interest and the Textile Alliance – what developments
would Fairtrade like to see in the fashion sector in the near future?
One of the most important and also most complex challenges here is to create transparency
in the supply chain. This is something demanded by both consumers and stakeholders alike.
Knowing their own supply chain is essential for companies in order to minimise risks and work
efficiently. However, actually even rising to a challenge of this kind means companies will
have to meet one key condition: recognition that being a textile-selling firm also means taking
responsibility for the supply chain.

The German Sustainability Code, Fair Wear Foundation, Economy for the Common Good,
Global Reporting Initiative, European Outdoor Conservation Association and, not least, the
Textiles Partnership launched by German Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller – outdoor
label Vaude’s list of commitments and memberships sounds impressive. Managing Director
Antje von Dewitz explains why the mountain sports equipment supplier from Southern
Germany considers alliances the right path into the future.
Vaude is among the founding members of the Textiles Partnership. Why is Vaude able to
make commitments others shy away from?
The Textiles Partnership aims at jointly tackling existing social and ecological challenges in the supply
chain. That’s a path we’ve already been on for several years. As a result, we know how important it is
to tackle this complex challenge in unison with other brands, retailers, production facilities, chemical
suppliers and materials manufacturers. We view this cooperation platform along with the political-
sector support accompanying it as a great opportunity to make even greater strides.
What can the fashion industry learn from the outdoor industry’s green pioneers when it
comes to systematically accepting social and ecological responsibility?
Accepting social and ecological responsibility is quite a demanding feat in the textile industry because
the supply chain is so complex. This competency has to be established step by step. Although we’ve
seen some excellent possible solutions in the market already – the Fair Wear Foundation in the
social or Bluesign in the ecological sphere, for example – rapid successes in implementing these
standards are rare because internal management, strategies and processes must all be equally
aligned with these goals. Usually it isn’t sufficient if an internal CSR department tackles an issue
alone. What’s more, at least some pioneering work remains to be done for many problems, for
example water-repellent gear without fluorocarbons, down production without force-feeding and
live-plucking or eco-friendly leather. The outdoor industry is definitely a trailblazer when it comes to
collaborating within the European and German trade associations. Real-world solutions are much
easier to implement together!
Vaude has managed to gain a public reputation as a green company. What key tips would you
give to brands just starting out on this path?
We’ve committed to doing the following things in order to be consistently credible and have a real
impact: we always adhere to the strictest existing standards or define even stricter ones ourselves.
We work with external experts to gain a first-hand understanding of the various topics and find our
own approaches. Everything we do is transparent – not just our achievements but also our areas
“under construction” – and we allow external monitoring.

EXPERT INTERVIEW
Antje von Dewitz
Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitskodex, Fair Wear Foundation, Gemeinwohlökonomie, Global

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) defines globally recognised criteria guaranteeing
sustainable textile production which cover the production of organically grown raw materials,
their ecologically and socially responsible manufacturing, as well as their transparent labelling.
RECOGNISED IN ALL MAJOR TRADING MARKETS
The standard enables the processing sectors to offer textiles made from organic fibres on the basis
of a certification recognised in all important trading markets. In the last two years the biggest increase
of GOTS certifications was in Europe. “We see the increase in Europe as a very positive sign. For
the companies the GOTS certification means an increasing competitive advantage in addition to the
effective supply chain management. It helps them find their ‘Business Case for Sustainability’. First of
all they have a pull effect on the whole worldwide supply chain and secondly they have a push effect
towards the end consumers. They are making themselves to real agents of change to sustainability
in the textile industry and secure their long-time company success at the same time” says Claudia
Kersten, GOTS Marketing Director.
CRITERIA FOR THE MANUFACTURING AND PROCESSING OF ORGANIC FIBRES
The use of chemicals is subject to certain requirements regarding their human and environmental tox-
icology and bio-degradability. Each and every operator along the entire value chain must comply with
ecological standards including processes for waste reduction and disposal backed up by independent
certification. Minimum social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labour Organisation
(ILO) must be met by all processors and manufacturers. In addition they must have a social compliance
management with defined elements in place.

GOTS’ core provisions such as the 70 % minimum content of certified organic fibres, bans on GMO
(genetically modified organism), nanotechnology and carcinogenic substances have been maintained.
There are modified rules on the conventional ‘additional fibre materials’: These now may consist of
regenerated, respective synthetic fibres - up to 30 % - provided they are environmentally improved and
certified. GOTS is following the current knowledge that the focus on natural fibers for this additional
fibre content is no longer justifiable. Other changes include the bans on virgin polyester and of ango-
ra (recently in the headlines due to animal cruelty concerns). New criteria were adopted for specific
product groups, such as textile personal care products or mattresses. The most important addition to
the social criteria that are based on the ILO key conventions (e.g. banning child labour) is to take into
consideration available results of various other reliable programs and certification schemes in this field.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) (EN)
PARTICIPANTS
transparenten Kennzeichnung.
ANERKANNT IN ALLEN WICHTIGEN HANDELSMÄRKTEN
Sie finden dadurch ihren ‘Business Case for Sustainability’.

Since its founding, the International Association of Natural Textile Industry (IVN) has
pursued one goal: raising awareness for eco-friendly textiles among consumers, press and
the retail trade.
Providing facts about ecological coherences supports a deliberate choice for ecofriendly
textiles. The focus of IVN is on the inherent quality of eco-friendly textiles, because they
believe quality is a strong selling point.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF QUALITY STANDARDS
IVN’s first step was to define and implement specific criteria pertaining not only to ecology
and social accountability in production processes but also to high quality standards in the
finished product. Products labelled with the quality seal NATURTEXTIL clearly demonstrate
that it is eminently possible to produce modern, truly eco-friendly, socially accountable and
high quality textiles. The association continues to broaden its range of activity. A new quality
seal – NATURLEDER – has been initiated. The first products meeting this standard are cur-
rently being produced. IVN continue to deal with cutting edge issues pertaining to eco-friendly
textiles such as CO2-balance, fair production, animal welfare issues, and allergenic potential.
THE EXPANSION OF SERVICES
An increasingly significant aspect of the association’s work is providing service for its mem-
bers. Press- and PR support, creating a forum for business contacts, databanks for products
or consultations regarding product certification are just a few of their services.

Fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership
between producers and traders, businesses and consumers. The international Fairtrade
system - made up of Fairtrade International and its member organizations - represents
the world’s largest and most recognized fair trade system.
The FAIRTRADE Mark is the most widely recognized ethical label in the world. It improves
the lives of over 1.4 Million farmers and workers in 74 countries in the global south.
When farmers sell on Fairtrade terms, it provides them with a better deal and improved terms of
trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade
offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through their every day shopping. Fairtrade
offers companies a credible way to ensure that the cotton they buy has a positive impact on the
lives of the cotton farmers at the end of the chain.
WHAT IS FAIRTRADE? FAIRTRADE MINIMUM PRICE
Thanks to the Fairtrade Minimum Price, farmers can cover their cost of sustainable production
and are provided with a safety net against market fluctuation.
FAIRTRADE PREMIUM
The Premium helps producers to improve the quality of their lives. It is paid on top of the Fairtrade
Minimum Price, and producers decide democratically how to use it. Typically they invest it in
education, healthcare, farm improvements or processing facilities to increase income.
EMPOWERMENT OF FARMERS AND WORKERS
Fairtrade helps build strong producer organizations with democratic and transparent processes;
farmers are empowered to create long-term sustainable change and have control over their
futures, for both their businesses and communities.
ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS
Strong environmental standards protecting farmers’ health and safety, conserving nature, and
banning GMOs and dangerous chemicals. Cotton farmers often invest the Fairtrade premium in
training programs on sustainable farming methods or the reduction of pesticide usage.

percent representation on the Fairtrade General Assembly.
FAIRTRADE CERTIFICATION
The ISO 65 accredited certifier FLO-CERT certifies all Fairtrade supply chains from the
producers in the global south up to the manufacturer. The FAIRTRADE Certified Cotton Mark
is suited for businesses and their customers who want the assurance the 100 percent of the
cotton in a finished product is Fairtrade certified. Consumers will recognize this commitment
by the FAIRTRADE Cotton Mark label sewn directly on the product, which allows for physical
traceability of the cotton back to the farmers who grew it.
The Fairtrade Cotton Sourcing Program is suited for companies looking to source a portion of
their large scale cotton supply on Fairtrade terms. It allows flexibility within the supply chain,
minimizes cost per unit, and can be applied in line with their corporate social responsibility goals.

SUSTAINABLE COTTON AT WORLD MARKET PRICES FOR TEXTILE COMPANIES
WORLDWIDE
Since 2005, the Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) initiative improves the living conditions of African
smallholder farmers. By building up a continuously growing international alliance of textile retailers,
the initiative combines profitability and sustainability. It was one of the first initiatives that integrated
sustainable cotton with social and environmental benefit into the mass market - in a transparent and
cost-neutral way. By collaborating with CmiA retailers can rely on an attractive, transparent as well
as verified sustainability standard and global supply chain support that makes it possible to easily
integrate CmiA cotton in all relevant global textile production markets. Currently more than 20 textile
companies including e.g. Puma, Tchibo, REWE Group and Otto Group procure CmiA verified cotton.
A nominal fee is paid by the textile companies and fashion brands on each item for the right to use the
Cotton made in Africa label. The generated income from licencing fees is re-invested in agricultural and
business trainings, verification and community projects in the African cotton growing regions.
PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFIT – COTTON MADE IN AFRICA’S SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS
According to its sustainability criteria, Cotton made in Africa bans highly hazardous pesticides. The
use of genetically modified seeds, irrigation as well as felling primary forests for a cotton field are part
of its exclusion criteria. Child labor, human trafficking and forced labor according to ILO conventions
are strictly prohibited. Through its sustainable cultivation methods, CmiA cotton saves up to 40% of
greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of cotton fiber in comparison to conventional cotton more than

2,000 liters of fresh water per kilogram of cotton in comparison to the global average due its rain-fed
cultivation. Compliance with the criteria of CmiA standards by cotton farmers, cotton companies, and
the gins is regularly reviewed by independent verifiers as part of a 3rd party verification process. As
an extension to its portfolio, the foundation now also offers CmiA Organic cotton. The new standard
compliments the existing Eco Standard EC No. 834/2007 and the Global Organic Textile Standard
(GOTS) with the social and economic criteria of CmiA.
COTTON MADE IN AFRICA IS AN INITIATIVE OF THE AID BY TRADE FOUNDATION
Dr. Michael Otto established in 2005 to promote environmental protection and the improvement of
social conditions in developing countries by trade. Whereas CmiA started with 150,000 in three African
countries in 2007, the initiative expanded its work to up to now more than 700,000 smallholders in
11 Sub Saharan African countries. Thereby, the initiative has become a major player in the cotton
sector across Sub-Saharan Africa and one of the most important anti-poverty programs of the German
development cooperation.

NACHHALTIGE BAUMWOLLE ZU WELTMARKTPREISEN FÜR TEXTILUNTERNEHMEN
WELTWEIT
Seit 2005 verbessert die Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) Initiative die Lebensbedingungen afrikanischer
Kleinbauern.
Cotton made in Africa integriert die
made in Africa-Baumwolle in Produktionsmärkten weltweit einzusetzen.
PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFIT - DIE NACHHALTIGKEITSINDIKATOREN VON COTTON MADE

The Lenzing Group is a world market leader with headquarters in Austria, production sites in all major
markets, as well as a worldwide network of sales and marketing offices.
TRADITION AND INNOVATION
Lenzing quality and innovative strength set global standards for man-made cellulose fibres. With 75
years of experience in fibre production, the Lenzing Group is the only company worldwide combining
the manufacturing of all three man-made cellulose fibre generations on a large industrial scale under
one roof – from the classic viscose to modal and lyocell (TENCEL®) fibres. The success of the
Lenzing Group results from a unique combination of consistent customer orientation together with
its leadership in innovation, technology and quality.
LENZING VISCOSE®– SETS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD
Lenzing has been producing Viscose, the first generation cellulose fibre, for 75 years. The knowledge
it has acquired in Viscose production is reflected in the superb quality of Lenzing Viscose®, quality
which now sets the standard for the textile industry today.
MICROMODAL® – SOFTNESS BY EDELWEISS TECHNOLOGY
Micro Modal® is extracted from beech wood and gives each and every textile a natural image. As a
result of using Edelweiss technology, Micro Modal® is CO2 neutral. Edelweiss stands for a “symbiotic”
production process – pulp, the raw material, is produced at the same site as the Modal fibre itself.
Thus, production can be done while going easy on energy and other resources. Simply Edelweiss!
COTTON/TENCEL® – NATURAL CONNECTION
The two cellulose fibers, TENCEL® and cotton, are ideal partners. They go together perfectly and
enhance each other with their properties. Both fibers are from nature and possess similar properties
such as good breathing properties. A blend with 30 % TENCEL® gives cotton fabrics a new
definition. As a result of adding TENCEL®, the fabric’s hand, moisture management and sheen can
be enhanced. Thus, the innovation potential for TENCEL®/cotton fabrics is great. Depending on the
blending ratio, the look and properties of these fabrics can be changed to suit any need.

made Cellulosefasern.
LENZING VISCOSE® – SETZT NEUE STANDARDS
MICROMODAL® – SOFTNESS BY EDELWEISS TECHNOLOGY
COTTON/TENCEL® – NATURAL CONNECTION

Certificates for sustainable fabrics and accessories have become
innumerable by now. But which certificate is given for which characteristic
and criteria when it comes to eco fabrics? And which significance do the
different certificates have? Together with IMOswiss AG (IMO) we have
developed a criteria catalogue that classifies the individual certificates in a
3 step model at a glance.
Green stands for the eco-balance of natural fibres. The maximum number
awarded are three green organic icons. The first is assigned for fabrics whose
fibres are predominantly organically grown and the yarn spinning is eco certified.
The second icon is awarded for weaving and knitting of textiles in compliance
with ecological standards. The highest level – three organic icons – is only
achieved by fabrics that are ecologically flawless from their growing to their
dyeing and finishing thereby living up to even the most demanding standards.
Furthermore three organic icons will only be awarded to contributing producers
– i.e. exhibitors- who are certified in their own right, as opposed to sourcing
from certified suppliers.
Blue confirms the environmental compatibility of synthetics and recycled
fibres like polyester, polyamide, cotton and wool. Regenerated cellulosic fibres
made of sustainable forestry wood and run through an ecological production
process get a blue icon as well. It is extremely advanced to have the complete
manufacturing process examined in order to save scarce resources as water
and energy (via certifier bluesign). We also award this with a blue icon.
Ideally, fabrics should be produced not only in a clean but also socially compatible
way – making it doubly good. There are a plethora of social standards in use
now – though they do denote different levels. Five acknowledged seals are
permitted here. Exhibitors reaching this benchmark will receive
one orange icon.

orangefarbenen Icon.

The Additionals segment has been presented in the organicselection for three seasons now. Since
accessories and findings also require inspection and certification for confirming the sustainability of
the complete finished product, certified sustainable additionals will be presented here in a pooled
manner. After all, unlike with textiles there are hardly any independent schemes for verifying these
requirements for accessories.
MUNICH FABRIC START has cooperated with IMOswiss AG (IMO) to develop proprietary trade fair
labelling for the new additionals segment at organicselection, which assesses and categorises the
raw materials and manufacturing processes. Key factors determining whether a product can be
admitted to the organicselection Additionals segment are above all the origin and sourcing method
of the raw materials as well as their freedom from harmful substances.
Additionals go organicselection! (EN)
LABELLING - ADDITIONALS
Organic Icons – DefinitionGREEN ORGANIC ICON
The green Organic Icon confirms that all additionals made of natural materials
(such as wood, horn, mother of pearl, stone, leather, metal) are free of harmful
substances. This depends on whether the raw material meets the requirements of
the conservation of the raw materials. In order to obtain a green Organic Icon, all
additionals (e.g. ribbons, cords, laces, linings, threads, labels, etc.) must meet or
exceed the requirement of being pollution free. Additionals that are also made of
ecologically-cultivated sustainable materials are awarded with a second icon.
Schadstofffreiheit.
Additionals go organicselection! (DE)
