Malibu students read their own poetry as Malibu’s poetry scene gains prominence in the community.

The bar stool and microphone made for a simple stage, let-ting the spoken words of

student poetry be the real stars of the show.

Fifty years ago, the poetry-reading atmosphere (especially if it were in Greenwich Village) might have included bongo drums, can-dles, black berets and a fog of ciga-rette smoke. But not in this 2014 version of a Malibu poetry reading.

As a requirement for their final grade in the Creative Writing class at Malibu High, 20 seniors wrote original poems around the theme of Los Angeles and read them in front of standing-room-only crowds at Bank of Books during

A group of Malibu youths are show-ing the commu-

nity that you’re never too young to lead, as the Harry Barovsky Memorial Youth Commission expanded again this year to accept 12 additional commission-ers, bringing the total with returning members to an all-time high of 26.

Poppins and pals

Our Lady of Malibu presented a fun musical production of

“Mary Poppins” over the week-end at Malibu City Hall. Students danced, sang and acted out the classic Disney film, which originally starred Julie Andrews and Malibu resident Dick Van Dyke.
