Vorwort

Preface
Robert Schumanns Variations on aTheme in Ebmajor, later known as the
Ghost Variations, were composed inFebruary 1854 a few weeks before hisinternment in the insane asylum atEndenich. Due to the harrowing eventsof this period Clara Schumann to whomthe work is dedicated jealously guard-
ed the manuscripts of this piece, herhusbands last composition for piano,as if they were sacred relics and forbadeany attempt to publish them. Not until1939 did the first edition finally appear. As it departs in many respects fromSchumanns manuscripts we have chosento present the work here for the firsttime in an Urtext edition based on allavailable sources (see also: Margit L.McCorkle: Robert Schumann, Thema-tisch-Bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis,Anhang F 39).
At this period in his life Schumannimagined himself to be surrounded byghosts who played music to him, someof it wonderful, some of it hideous. They not only promised him the mostmagnificent revelations but also threat-ened, as his highly concerned wife noted,to cast him into Hell. In the night fromthe 17th to the 18th of February heclaimed to hear angelic voices offeringhim this chorale-like theme in Ebmajor, which he wrote down on the spot. A fewdays later, probably on 22 and 23 Feb-
ruary according to Clara Schumannsand Ruppert Beckers diary entries, hecomposed a set of variations on the sametheme. Unfortunately all that has sur-vived of this first draft is a single leafwritten on one side only (source A1). Asa result, we cannot be certain how manyof the total of five variations were com-pleted at that time.
On 27 February Schumann againwrote out his Ghost Variations; ClaraSchumann even speaks of a fair copy.In the midst of this activity he left his
home half-dressed and, in a suicide at-tempt, threw himself into the icy watersof the Rhine, from which, as is wellknown, he was rescued and taken homeagain. One day later he completed thework he had interrupted so dramaticallyand sent the manuscript to his wife, whoon the previous evening, acting on theadvice of a physician, had moved to thehome of an acquaintance. This complete

autograph manuscript (source A2),
though not fair in all sections, has like-
wise survived and was recently made
available to the world at large by its own-
er in a facsimile edition (see Sources).
The Brahms Estate in the library
of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde inVienna also contains a corrected manu-
script copy of the variations. It has been
shown to be the work of a Dsseldorf
copyist who had worked for Schumann
on several occasions (source Ab). It is
uncertain exactly when Brahms came
into possession of this copy (the only
known one of its kind); but presumably
this happened one year after these terri-
ble events, for Clara Schumann entered
copyists costs for the Ebmajor Variations
in her Haushaltbuch in April 1855.
From an editorial and philological stand-point this copy is especially important as
it helps us to decipher Schumanns some-
times indistinct handwriting in source A2,
which served as its immediate model. It
also contains a large number of correc-
tions, some of them superseding A2,
which were in all likelihood the work of
Schumann himself. Finally, several fur-
ther entries prove that it served indirectly
as the production master for the first
edition of 1939.
The Commentsat the end of this vol-
ume provide detailed information on thesources and alternative readings.

Prface
esprits. Il faut attendre 1939 pour que
paraisse la premire dition (source E):
celle-ci diffre maints gards du texte
de Schumann, ce qui justifie la publica-
tion de la prsente dition critique, la
premire, ralise sur la base de toutes
les sources disponibles (cf aussi: Margit
L. McCorkle: Robert Schumann, Thema-
tisch-Bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis,
aujourdhui quune seule page auto-
graphe de cette premire mise par crit
(source A1), si bien quil est impossible
de savoir quelle part de luvre, qui
comprend cinq variations au total, le
compositeur avait dj crite cette
date.
lon connaisse aujourdhui; cest proba-
blement une anne aprs les terribles
vnements quil la reue puisque Clara
inscrit dans son Haushaltbuch, son
agenda, en avril 1855, les frais de copie
pour les variations en Mibmajeur. Ladite
A2, utilise directement par le copiste;
dautre part, elle renferme de nombreu-
ses corrections, dont certaines modifient
mme le texte de A2, corrections que lon
peut selon toute probabilit attribuer
Schumann. Par ailleurs enfin, cette copie
corrige comporte diverses mentions
prouvant quelle a indirectement servi
