An Atlas Series of EthiopiaRural Population Density by RegionEthiopia is identified as one of thecradles of civilization. It is located inthe Horn of Africa, very close to theMiddle East. The total area of thecountry is about 1.1 million squarekilometers. The majority of thepopulation lives in the highland areasof the country—the main occupationbeing farming. In fact, Ethiopia is oneof the least urbanized countries in theworld, with less than 14 percent of thecountry urbanized in 1994. This mapshow the density of rural areas inEthiopia by region.
