Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth II were both born in the year 1926. Monroe, who died in 1962, would
have turned 90 in June 2016 and Her Majesty the Queen, who is still healthy and active, turned 90 in April
2016. The two women met exactly once. In the picture below they can be seen at the Royal Film premiere of
the war film The Battle of River Plate, in Leicester Square, London, 29 October, 1956. Neither appeared in the
film but were rather guests at the event.

WHO SAID IT?
A woman can’t be alone. She needs a man. A man and a woman support and strengthen each other. She just can’t do it by herself.
Grief is the price we pay for love.
I don’t mind this being a man’s world-as long as I can be a woman in it.
I have to be seen to be believed.
It’s all to do with the training: you can do a lot if you’re properly trained.
Oh, dear, I hope it wasn't anyone important.
Why haven’t I the right to grow and expand like everybody else?

B. Mark the defining or non-defining relative clauses in the following paragraph about
Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn Monroe had a very difficult childhood and spent most of it in orphanages and foster homes al-
though her mother was still alive. Jim Doherty, who was Marilyn Monroe’s first husband, was her neighbor.
They got married when Marilyn was just 16. Jim, who
was in the Merchant Marines, soon left to fight in World
War II. During this time Marilyn worked for a company
which made airplanes. She met a photographer there
who got Marilyn her first modeling job. She dyed her
hair, which used to be brown, blond. In 1947 she got
her first role in a movie. She played a waitress who
had nine lines in Dangerous Years. By 1952 she was an
established actress in Hollywood. In 1954 she married
a man who was a famous baseball player. However, her
marriage to Joe DiMaggio, who was very jealous, lasted
less than three years. A photograph that made Marilyn
very famous was taken in New York, where the movie The Seven Year Itch was filmed. Marilyn’s third hus-
band, who was a famous author, was Arthur Miller. He encouraged her to act in the movie Some Like It Hot,
which was one of her most successful movies. Marilyn acted in her last movie, which was called The Misfits,
in 1960. She had had alcohol and drug problems for many years and died of a drug overdose in 1962.
Marilyn had a strong personality, stage presence and charisma which made her a Hollywood legend.
C. Make the text about Queen Elizabeth II more interesting and easier to read by combining sentences using
defining or non-defining relative clauses.
Queen Elizabeth II has reigned the longest in Britain. She is queen of 15 countries besides the United
Kingdom. Elizabeth was only 13 years old in 1939. She fell in love with
Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark. They got married in 1947. Their
wedding was in Westminster Abbey. They lived in a house. It was near
Windsor Castle. Their first son was born one year later. He was Charles.
Their three other children are Anne, Andrew and Edward. They were born in
1950, 1960 and 1964. Elizabeth became queen in 1952. Her father King
George IV died in 1952. Queen Elizabeth has traveled extensively during her
reign, visiting most countries of the Commonwealth. Countries in Africa
and the Caribbean used to be British colonies. Many of them became
independent in the 1960s and 70s. In 1982 there was a war between Britain
and Argentina. It lasted 10 weeks. The Queen’s son Andrew was a helicopter
pilot in the Royal Navy at the time. In 1992 the marriages of her three older
children ended. The Queen called 1992 her horrible year. Queen Elizabeth
has been queen for more than 60 years now. Surprisingly she is not criticized very often. Just like Marilyn
Monroe, people watch very closely what the Queen wears. She often wears hats. They are often praised and
copied. Queen Elizabeth has her own personal fashion designers. A magazine specializes in fashion. It calls
her style “iconic”.

Topics for further discussion
1. Should “sex symbol” be added to Marilyn’s list of occupations?
2. Both of these women are/were public figures. Which woman do you think is the better role model? Why?
3. How public do you think public figures should really be?
