Ben C Eisenberg, MD (1908–1998)

Ben C. Eisenberg, age 90, died at hishome in Indian Wells, California, Oc-tober 26, 1998. Born, July 20, 1908 inCleveland, Ohio, he was graduatedfrom Case-Western Medical School,1933. He received training in internalmedicine at Los Angeles USC MedicalCenter.He was practicing internal medicine

in Pocatello, Idaho when he enteredmilitary service in 1942. After 4 years,he was separated with the rank of Ma-jor, having been decorated twice. Fol-lowing this, he entered private practicein the Los Angeles suburbs of Hun-tington Park and Lynwood. During thistime, he was an Associate Professor ofMedicine at the University of SouthernCalifornia School of Medicine, andChief of the Allergy Department at the

University of California Irvine Schoolof Medicine. He left Los Angeles in1972, joining the staff of the PalmSprings Medical Clinic and continuedto be active until 1982.He was a member of the American

Medical Association, California Med-ical Association, Los Angeles CountyMedical Association, Los Angeles andCalifornia Allergy Societies, WestCoast Allergy Society, fellow of theAmerican College of Allergists, fellowof the American Academy of Allergy,fellow of the American College ofChest Physicians, fellow of the Amer-ican Association of Certified Aller-gists, member of the American andCalifornia Societies of Internal Medi-cine, and member of the CaliforniaThoracic Society.

Ben served as President of the Col-lege, 1975–1976, during a difficult pe-riod of transition, and handled his du-ties with distinction. He received theFellow Distinguished Award in 1977.Considering the many honors and rec-ognition he has received, he is perhapsbest remembered for his gentle mannerand the genuine concern he had for thecare of his patients.He is survived by his wife of 65

years, Jeanne; two daughters; fourgrandchildren; five great grandchil-dren; and three brothers.The College has lost a true friend

and loyal worker.
