• Konkurrenz in Asien wächst in beispielloser Geschwindigkeit
Paradigmenwechsel im Seehandel
Vor der Krise Nach der Krise

• Kosten• Zeit• Kapazität
Reaktion der Reeder
• Schiffe wurden stillgelegt = mittelfristig teuer
• Schiffe fahren langsamer = sparen Energie / Emission
Markt bisher
• Propeller für maximalen Vortrieb/ volle Beladung (Geschwindigkeit)
• vor allem Schiffsneubau
Markt heute
• Propeller für sparsamen Energie- einsatz (Kosten / Emission)
• Schiffsneubau, zunehmend Schiffsumbau
Unsere Chancen

Quo Vadis vessel operation? The shipping market is still under pressure due to high fuel prices and overcapa-
cities. The number of vessels in layup is increasing once again and in the next two years additional tonnage is going to be delivered. Therefore the question is: What will be the consequences for vessel operation in the longer term?
Obviously the so far dominant instrument of slow-steaming was very successful. The number of unused vessels was reduced significantly by changing the schedules and due to the lower vessel speeds the fuel consumption of the fleets was redu-ced as well. But the vessel designs were not configured for such low vessel speeds as a constant operation. Therefore the sa-vings due to slow steaming are operational based but not technical based.
After the question of the ability of cons-tant operation and the possibility of further improvements was discussed in-depth for the main engines in order to achieve additional technical savings, the question of consequences for the propel-ler was left out so far. But especially the investigation of further improvements due to an adaption of the propeller to the new operational profile is worthwhile. Even though the fact that differences in efficiency between several ships so
far cannot be captured due to the gap between ship owner and ship operator, there might be a continuing increase of relevance of the performance data. At present it is already obvious that more efficient vessels are going to be earlier in a new charter. Against that background the overcapacities force the selection between vessels with different perfor-mances.
In addition the policy driven but so far mandatory instrument SEEMP (Ship Ener-gy Efficiency Management Plan) will also give more pressure to vessels with lower overall efficiency because of the increa-sed transparency. The comparability of the existing and monitored vessels will
increase, which will be the basis of deci-sion for charterers.
This more detailed view on the overall ef-ficiency of the vessel gives a competitive edge to the technically better solution. Additional effort in design and manufac-turing may be worth to invest because of shorten payback periods. And as the evi-dence respectively the counterevidence can only be shown based on the realistic operation, either on-board or due to simu-lations the capturing of the operational driven influences on the technical soluti-on cannot be neglected furthermore. This may give more pressure to the engineers at ship yards and suppliers but at least bright prospects to innovative companies.

Fazit
