Landmarke 14Geopunkt 2 Kalksteinbruch Hoppenstedt

Landmarke 14Geopunkt 2 Limestone Quarry Hoppenstedt
Why is the sea bottom of the Cretaceous sea near Hoppenstedt tilted?
Networks The Geopark Harz · Braunschwei-ger Land · Ostfalen is a National GeoPark and member of the Euro-pean Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network.
A National GeoPark is a clear-ly defi ned region, which conveys both geological history as well as the development of a cultural land-scape.
The European Geoparks Net-work (EGN) integrates regions, which have an extraordinary geo-logical history.
Global Geoparks Network (GGN) is a worldwide association of diff e-rent Geoparks following common objectives under the auspices of UNESCO.
In the Harz region not only the nature is within our grasp, but also the history of the Earth. The Regional-verband Harz attempts to convey the history of the Earth and the mining history to visitors. To illustrate the geological diversity of the Harz and his foreland, an area-wide network consisting of Landmarks and Geopoints was developed. Landmarks are widely vi-sible or particularly well-known ground points of the Geopark. Geopoints open a window into the history of the Earth, e. g. stone quarries or show mines. The
Limestone Quarry Hoppenstedt is Geopoint 2 in the area around the Landmark 14 – Huysburg Monastery. For more information about the Nature Park and the Geopark: www.harzregion.de

A global sea-level rise started about 95 Ma before pre-sent and led to nearly complete fl ooding of Central Europe. It was caused by a complete deglaciation of the earth and the formation of new mid-ocean ridges, pushing the ocean water on the continental shelves. At the climax of this rise, the sea-level was 400 m higher than today and even the area of the future Harz Moun-tains was fl ooded. Limestone deposits of this deep sea are exposed in the abandoned Quarry Hoppenstedt. They consist nearly completely of tiny calcitic shells of planktonic algaes. In the lower parts, limestones contain a variety of fos-sils, living in a nutrient-rich sea, among this a lot of bivalves, echinoids and ammonites. Fossils are almost absent in the white limestone unit above. Not until the regression of the sea level, fossil-rich limestones were deposited again, showing a conspicuous red colour. The ancient sea bottom was turned up when the Harz was thrusted onto his foreland. The outcrop represents the southern limb of a large fold, which is called Fall-stein Anticline.
