Application-oriented propulsion systems
SCHOTTEL Pump-JetSPJ
Many extremely shallow waters cannot be navigatedwith conventional propulsion systems. SCHOTTELrecognized this problem at an early stage and developedthe Pump-Jet (SPJ) as a solution. The SPJ not only setsstandards as a shallow-water propulsion system but isalso increasingly used as a robust, powerful and reliablemanoeuvring system on ships and vessels of all kindsoperating under exceptional conditions.
The application-specificcharacteristics• Compact construction, space-saving installation
and easy maintenance• Minimum loss of displacement, especially
significant for lightweight shallow-draftvessels
• Simple installation flush with the hull• Operation in water depths < 0.5 m and
beaching possible• Reduced suction effect in shallow water on
account of the much lower volume flow ascompared with propeller-driven vessels
• As a manoeuvring aid in the bow, the SPJcan be used for main and auxiliary propul-sion (take-home device), as required
• Virtually no risk of damage due to grounding or floating debris
• Low-noise and low-vibration operation dueto encapsulated design
We are currently developingstandard systems of up to3500 kW, which are characterizedby their perfection and reliability. We supply competent solutions andinstallation variants meeting the requirements
of special applications too.
The Pump-Jet operates reliably and with full thrust at aminimum immersion of only 150 to 750 mm, depending onthe model involved, and can be powered by engines ormotors of any type. It can be rotated through 360°,providing full thrust in all directions and ensuring excellentmanoeuvring performance with utmost smoothness andcomfort.
The SCHOTTEL Pump-Jet - the proven propulsion and manoeuvring system even for extreme operating conditions

The application of CAD in developmentand design, the implementation ofadvanced manufacturing technologies, the use of high-grade materials, skilfulassembly and professional installationon site are the major foundations for thetop quality of our products. This isimpressively confirmed by the certifica-tion of our quality management systemaccording to DIN EN ISO 9001 byAmerican Bureau of Shipping, BureauVeritas, Det Norske Veritas andGermanischer Lloyd.
The impeller forces the energizedwater into a diffuser, as a result ofwhich kinetic energy is converted intopressure energy.
This energy transformation processis continued in the diffuser, and thewater is collected in the pressurecasing.
The water is finally expelled throughthe outlet nozzles at an angle of 15°,and thrust is generated which can besteered through 360°.
Operating principle
1 Our tailored steering and control systemshave been service-proven and type-tested fordecades.
2 Measured-data acquisition onboard usingthe DIADEM software
3 Existing Pump-Jet models are optimized andnew types developed using state-of-the-artcalculation methods.
4 In close cooperation with internationallyrenowned research institutes we constantlyupgrade our Pump-Jets so that they arealways acknowledged throughout theindustry as trendsetting.
