Part 3 – Questions 12–17 Read the text and then mark each correct statement with a tick ().

There is only one correct solution per statement.

Seven-year-old girl writes letter of complaint to Lego

Seven-year-old Charlotte Benjamin is sick to death of playing with the Lego girl. In a strongly worded letter to the company, Lego fan Charlotte set out her list of complaints.

"I am 7 years old and I love Legos but I don’t like that there are more Lego boy people and barely any Lego girls," she writes.

Charlotte is also bored of having to play with pink lego and all the dull things that the girl Legos are left to do.

"Today I went to a store and saw legos in two sections – the girls pink and the boys blue," she writes. "All the girls did was sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and they had no jobs but the boys went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs, they even swam with sharks," she adds.

Charlotte's father sent the letter to the editor of Sociological Pages, who later posted it to social media. Charlotte’s frustrations have obviously hit a nerve. This entry has already received 1,390 likes on Twitter and 4,107 likes on Facebook and has been picked up by media around the world.

Many of the people who agree with Charlotte are mothers of young

children with similar experiences. They come from places as far away as Hong Kong, Cape Town and Chicago. The roles of the Lego boy and girl figures no longer reflect the situations in the real world, they say. It’s time for Lego to make a change.

It's not the first time the toy company has been criticised for its boy vs. girl practices, something the company has been attempting to address. Last year Lego released its first female lab-scientist figure – a career option that we feel Charlotte Benjamin would appreciate.

Charlotte’s complaint will ring true to any girl who permanently has skinned knees or spends much of her time up a tree instead of playing quietly with dolls.

Charlotte finishes her letter with the words, "I want you to make more Lego girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun, ok!?!"

Yes, Lego, and indeed any toy maker out there, more adventures for girls please, ok?

Clothing Customs

The types of clothing that people wear reflect the diversity in our society just as much

as the variation in climate. There are no laws or rules on clothing, but you must wear

certain clothing for work situations. Most workplaces have dress standards. […]

Many Australians live close to the beach and the sea. On hot days, they may wear

little clothing on the beach and surrounds. This does not mean that people who dress

to go to the beach or swimming have low moral standards. It means that this is what

we accept on and near our beaches.

People from other countries can choose to wear their national dress. They may be

religious or customary items and include a monk’s robe, a burqa, a hijab or a turban.

As a tolerant society with people from many different cultures, clothing is a part of

cultural beliefs and practices that is encouraged.

Polite Behaviour

'Please' and 'thank you' are words that are very helpful when dealing with other

people, and buying goods or services. When asked if you would like something, like a

cup of tea, it is polite to say, 'Yes please', or just 'please' if you would like it, or 'no,

thank you' if you do not. […]

Australians tend to think that people who do not say 'please' or 'thank you' are being

rude. Using these words will help in building a good relationship. […]

You should always try to be on time for meetings and other visits. If you realise you

are going to be late, try to contact the person to let them know. This is very important

for visits to professionals as you may be charged money for being late or if you miss

the appointment without notifying them before the appointment time.

Most Australians blow their noses into a handkerchief or tissue, not onto the footpath.

This is also true for spitting. Many people will also say, 'Bless you' when you sneeze.

This phrase has no religious intent.

18 You may wear whatever you want when you go to work.

19 Australians have low moral standards on the beach.

20 Traditional foreign clothing is accepted in Australia.

21 When you receive what you pay for, you should say ‘thank you’.

22 Saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ helps you to make friends more easily.

23 It is OK in Australia if you are a bit late for a conference.

24 Doctors and lawyers can make you pay a fine if you are late seeing them.
