Völlig überraschend hatte die BIOTECHNICA ges-tern nachmittag prominen-ten Besuch: Die Bundesmi-nisterin für Bildung und For-schung Dr. Annette Schavan machte der in den gutgefüll-ten Messehallen versammel-ten deutschen Biotechnolo-gie-Branche persönlich die Aufwartung. “Die Biotechnologie in Deutschland ist eine enorme Erfolgsgeschichte“, sagte die aus Berlin eingeflogene Scha-van dem Biotechnica Jour-nal und verwies auf das im-mense Wachstum des Sek-tors, das seinen Beginn im Bio-Regio-Wettbewerb des Bun-desforschungsministeriums genommen habe. Functional Food im Trend Growth in functional food

Moderne Lebensmittel sollen nicht nur schmecken, sondern auch die Gesund-heit fördern. Für die Unter-nehmen ein lukratives Ge-schäft: Functional Food ver-zeichnet seit Jahren ein zweistelliges Wachstum. Mit rund 3 Mrd. Euro verfügt Deutschland über das größ-te Marktvolumen in Euro-pa, das 2006 bei insgesamt rund 6 Mrd. Euro lag.

Weil Experten bis 2011 eine Ver-dopplung erwarten, setzen Le-bensmittelkonzerne wie Nest-lé, Unilever und Danone, aber auch Pharmakonzerne zuneh-mend auf Functional Food.

Bereits heute erwirtschaftet Nestlé weltweit, laut Vorstands-mitglied Werner Bauer, sieben Milliarden Euro pro Jahr mit Functional Food. Während sich die Unternehmen an-fangs vor allem auf Milchprodukte mit gesundheits-fördernden Bakte-rienstämmen kon-zentrierten, wer-den inzwischen zielgerichtet Pro-dukte entwickelt, die das Risiko von Krankheiten redu-zieren sollen.

Wohin die Reise künftig geht, zeigt das Beispiel Hol-land: Dort zahlt seit Anfang 2007 die größte Krankenversicherung VGZ ih-ren 2,1 Millionen Versicherten jährlich vierzig Euro, wenn sie die cholesterinsenkende Becel-Magarine von Unilever kaufen. Wie im Rahmen zweier Ver-anstaltungen zu Functional Food auf der BIOTECHNICA

gestern zu hören war, wird die neue Health-Claims-Ver-ordnung (vgl. Meldung rechts)

von vielen Unterneh-men als Hindernis wahrgenommen. Sie macht für viele Pro-dukte künftig klini-sche Studien nötig.

Modern nutri-tion not only has to taste good, but also support health. For compa-nies it is a lucrative business: Recent years have shown two-digit growth rates. At 3 billion euros, Germany’s market is the big-

gest in Europe, which was it-self worth 6 billion euros in 2006.

As experts estimate a doubling of growth by 2011, food com-panies such as Nestlé, Unilev-er or Danone, but also pharma concerns, are investing heavily

in functional food. According to Werner Bauer, member of the Nestlé Board of Directors, the company is already earn-ing €7bn annually with func-tional food.

Previously, companies fo-cused on milk products with health promoting bacteria strains. Now, developments are concentrated more on prod-ucts that reduce the risk of dis-ease. The Netherlands are dem-onstrating where the path may lead: Since January 2007, the biggest health insurance VGZ has paid its 2.1 bn insurers 40 euros each if they promise to consume the cholesterol-re-ducing becel margarine from Unilever.

As was reported during the two events about functional food at BIOTECHNICA yester-day, the new EU health claims regulation (see article, right) is being seen as a barrier for this development: more clini-cal studies for functional food products will be requested in the future.

Health Claims-Regeln Health claims rules

Am 1. Juli ist die neue Health-Claim-Verordnung EG Nr. 1924/2006 des Euro-päischen Parlamentes in al-len EU-Mitgliedstaaten in Kraft getreten. Nährwert- und gesundheitsbezogene An-gaben in der Werbung und Kennzeichnung von Lebens-mitteln, einschließlich Nah-rungsergänzungsmitteln, unterliegen von nun an de-taillierten Anforderungen. Angaben über die Verringe-rung eines Krankheitsrisikos unterliegen Sondervorschrif-ten und müssen ein Zulas-sungsverfahren durchlaufen. Der überwiegende Teil der er-laubten Health Claims muss jedoch noch von der Europä-ischen Behörde für Lebens-mittelsicherheit (EFSA) fest-gelegt werden. Dies soll bis spätestens 2010 geschehen. Bis dahin gelten Übergangs-regeln. Die neue Verordnung betrifft vor allem Anbieter von Functional Food-Pro-dukten.

On 1 July, the new health claim regulation (EC No. 1924/2006) from the Euro-pean Parliament became ef-fective in all EU member states. From now on, nutrition and health claims in adverti-sing and labelling of food, di-etary supplements included, are required to follow strict regulations. Claims concer-ning the reduction of a risk of disease are subject to special regulations and must undergo an approval process. The ma-jority of the approved claims has yet to be determined by the European Food Safety Au-thority (EFSA). This will be achieved by 2010 at the latest; a transition period is effective. In particular, the regulation will have consequences for functional food providers.

Nach einigen Jahren der Durststrecke ist der Bedarf an Fachkräften in den Life Sci-ences wieder groß, wie der Blick auf die aktuelle Firmen-umfrage von biotechnologie.de belegt, die im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Bil-dung und Forschung (BMBF) durchgeführt wurde. So ist die Anzahl der deutschen Biotechnologie-Beschäftigten im Jahr 2006 um neun Pro-zent gestiegen. Aufwärts geht es sowohl im Biotech-Mittel-stand als auch bei den großen Pharma- und Chemiekonzer-nen. In der Großindustrie stieg die Zahl der Angestellten so-gar um 36%.

Eine solche Nachfrage schlägt sich auch im Markt nieder. Im-mer mehr Arbeitgeber greifen

dabei auf Online-Angebote zu-rück. „Seit Monaten haben wir ständig über 600 aktuelle Stel-lenausschreibungen bei job-vector. Die Branche sucht mit-tlerweile viel stärker online als noch vor wenigen Jahren“, er-läutert Tom Wiegand, CEO von jobvector. Das LifeScience-Kar-riereportal veranstaltet heu-te einen speziell an Studenten und junge Talente gerichteten „Jobevent“. So wird ein Bewer-bungsmappencheck angebo-ten. Auf der „jobvector-talents-tour“ können Bewerber an den Ständen der beteiligten Firmen mit Personalverantwortlichen ins Gespräch kommen. Darü-ber hinaus informiert ein Vor-tragsprogramm rund um die Themen Berufswahl, Bewer-bung und Karriere, gegenüber den Ausstellungshallen 8/9.

After some years of hard times for bright sparks seek-ing employment in the Life Sciences, the situ-ation today seems to have changed. This is at least the conclusion of the recent com-pany survey car-ried out by bio-technologie.de on behalf of the German Minis-try of Education a n d R e s e a r c h (BMBF). There-by, the number of employees in bio-tech companies in 2006 showed an increase of 9 % on the previous year.

The positive developments can be seen in biotech SMEs as well as in the pharma industry and chemical concerns. The latter showed a dramatic increase of 36% in biotechnology-related business areas.

Such demand is also reflected in the market; more employers

than ever use online job portals when look-ing for new personell. “For months, we have had at least 600 job offers in our jobvec-tor portal. There is a trend for more on-line-based job-seek-ing from the employ-er-side”, said Tom Wi-egand, CEO of jobvec-tor. Today, the Life- Science career portal will be presenting a wide range of special programs dedicated to job-seekers. These can be found at the front of Hall 8/9.

Nach dem Abschluss des BMBF-Wettbewerbs BioIn-dustrie 2021 befindet sich die Weiße Biotechnologie im Umbruch. Auch deshalb wurde die erste „Trinationa-le Clustertagung Weiße Bio-technologie“ ein voller Er-folg.

Mit gespannten Erwartungen waren nicht nur die Preisträger angereist, sondern vor allem diejenigen, die wissen wollten, was die fünf Gewinner mit dem Geld anfangen werden. In kur-zen Vorträgen gab es Informa-tionen zu den fünf Gewinner-clustern, des „virtuellen“ Clus-ters Industrieverbund Mikro-bielle Genomik sowie Biotech-Zentren aus Österreich und der

Schweiz. Abgeschlossen wur-de das Treffen von einer hoch-karätig besetzten Podiumsdis-kussion. Die Beteiligten stimm-ten letztlich darin überein, dass nur über eine enge Zusammen-arbeit über nationale und Un-ternehmensgrenzen hinweg

dustry 2021, the White Bio-technology industry is un-dergoing some changes. This is at least one reason for the success of the First Interna-tional Convention on White Biotech.

The five winners of BioIndustry 2021 came to the congress, as did the “virtual” cluster In-dustrieverbund Mikrobielle Genomik and biotech centres from Austria and Switzerland, who presented their plans for the future. The meeting was complemented by a top-class panel discussion. The partici-pants at the conference final-ly agreed that the leading po-sition of the white biotech in-dustry in central Europe can only be maintained through closer cooperations. “We must really want to win”, said Prof. Wiltrud Treffenfeldt, Dow Agrosciences.

Eine Frage der Produktivität A question of productivity

Weltweit ist die biophar-mazeutische Produktion ei-ner der Wachstumsmärk-te schlechthin. Die steigen-de Anzahl neu zugelassener Vakzine, Antikörper oder an-derer rekombinanter Protei-ne stellt neue Anforderungen an die Produktivität ohne-hin schon stark ausgelasteter Anlagen.

GE Healthcare spricht diese Fragen während der BioProcess Tour 2007 an, die heute auch auf der BIOTECHNICA von 15 bis 16 Uhr haltmacht (CC Saal 104). Vier produktivitätssteigernde Neuerungen werden vorge-stellt: Ein neuer flexibler Anio-nenaustauscher, mit dem Prote-inverunreinigungen oder Anti-körperaggregate entfernt wer-den können, „schlanke“ Chro-

matographie- und Filterpro-zesse sowie – drittens – neue Ansätze für die Überwachung chromatographischer Reini-gungsschritte. Zu guter Letzt werden neue Möglichkeiten zur Produktion von Vakzinen in Zellkultur beleuchtet.

The worldwide produc-tion of biopharmaceuticals is on the upswing. The growing number of new-ly approved vaccines, an-tibodies or other recom-binant proteins is posing new questions for produc-tion experts. Productivity and quality are the key cri-teria for bioprocesses.

GE Healthcare is addressing productivity at its BioProcess Tour 2007, which stops today at BIOTECHNICA, from 3 to 4pm (CC room 104). Four central topics will feature during the conference: a novel multimodal anion exchange resin that can remove residual protein or un-wanted antibody aggregates. Secondly, new, “lean” chroma-tography and filtration prod-

ucts and thirdly, a new process development workflow with templates to study chromato-graphic process steps. Last but not least, the show will address the production of vaccines in cell culture, including techni-cal transfer and scale-up.

So hergestellte DNA-Nano-Kon-jugate, mit Lasern perforierte Zellen oder magnetische DNA-Nanobeads könnten schon bald die riskanten Virus-Vektoren in der Gentherapie ablösen, hieß es auf der Konferenz.

Novel laser-based techniques clear a path for the produc-tion of nano-surfaces, conju-gates and composites which, for the first time, have the ap-propriate purity for a medical device, according to Stephan Barcikowski from the Laser Centre Hanover. Laser-manu-factured DNA nanocanjugates, transient laser perforation of cells or magnetic nanobeads may well replace the risky viral vectors in gene therapies, said a number of speakers.

Stem cell researcher Gustav Steinhoff reported on injections of Epoitin-alpha into infarcted hearts that induced stem cell homing and improved the re-generation of damaged tissue.

Nano- and microtechnol-ogies will make a serious im-pact on the future develop-ment of new cures for de-generative diseases. There was no doubt about this among the 50 participants at the Regenerative Medi-cines conference, where ex-perts from all four German RegMed clusters met yes-terday. The 12 lectures and poster presentation were centred around novel tissue scaffolds, stem cell clean-up and cryoconservation.

Von den 559 Projektvorschlägen, die der ERC aus rund 8.794 gültigen Bewerbungen zur Detailbegutachtung ausgewählt hatte, stammen zwar die meisten aus Deutsch-land (85), Italien (70), Frankreich (65), den Niederlanden (50) und Großbritannien (42). Die durchschnittlich 36 Jahre alten Forscher sehen aber den Inselstaat als mit Abstand attraktivsten Forschungsstandort an.

Trio bei Life Sciences vorn

Ein anderes Bild ergibt sich bei Betrach-tung der 206 aus 3.396 Life-Sciences-Be-werbungen ausgewählten Forscher. Hier liegen Großbritannien (29), Deutschland (28) und Frankreich (27) auf der Beliebt-heitsskala fast gleichauf. Es folgen– nicht zuletzt sicher durch die liberalisierten Re-gelungen zur Stammzellforschung – Spa-nien, die Niederlande und Italien.

Die Endauswahl der rund 250 vom ERC geförderten Spitzenwissenschaft-ler erfolgt im Oktober. Statt der maxi-mal möglichen Fördersumme von 2 Mio. € beantragten die Forscher durchschnitt-lich 1,2 Mio. €.

England zieht Grundlagenforscher anUK most attractive for basic researchers

The UK is the most attractive re-search site for research talents within the European Union. This is one result to emerge from an interim analysis of the European Research Council’s (ERC) excellence contest for basic research-ers (“Starting Grants”).

Out of the 559 project proposals that the ERC selected from 8,794 applications for de-tailed review, most came from Germany (85) followed by Italy (70), France (65), the Neth-erlands (50), and the UK (42). However, most of the young (on average, 36 years old) top researchers want to conduct their research projects in the UK, which seems to be more attractive than other research sites.

A trio lead life sciences

The picture changes when it comes to the 206 life sciences researchers who were se-lected from 3,396 applications. In life sci-ences, three different countries the first choice of basic researchers – the UK (29), Germany (28), and France (27). This trio is followed by Spain, an attractive site for stem cell researchers due to liberal leg-islation and research environment, the Netherlands and Italy.

In October, the ERC will select around 250 top researchers for the up to €2 mil-lion Starting Grants. Most applicants have requested an average of €1.2 mil-lion.

Am frühen Nachmittag waren es bereits mehr als 5.000 Besucher – eine Bestätigung des neuen Konzep-tes, so Messevorstand Stephan Kühne, das durch den Ausbau des Partnerings auf alle Be-reiche der Biotechnologie im nächsten Jahr weiter aufgewer-tet werden soll.

? How is your business de-veloping within the different market segments of ‘research’, ‘vaccines’ and ‘biopharmaceu-ticals’?! Biochrom AG has established its products in in the German research market. We have a sta-ble market share of an estimat-ed 30% and can see a constant slow growth in this segment. As Biochrom AG has manu-factured sera and media since a long time under GMP facili-ties we can not compete with the prices of “discounters”, but we have access to the more de-manding customers.

Additionally, we are increas-ingly operating as suppliers of cell culture products and sterile solutions for the pharmaceuti-cal industry. Our product vol-umes range from a few millili-tres to 1000 litres in transport-able, sterile bags. ? What are the drivers for the development within these mar-ket tranches and how will Bio-chrom benefit from it?

! In the research market we see a trend for products with a high quality standards and extraor-dinary specialities and we find ourselves well placed in this market segment. The research market increasingly demands high quality specialities such as animal-free sera or safe prod-ucts for tissue engineering.

Furthermore, the pharma-ceutical industry increasing-ly realises the key advantages of outsourcing the production of media and solutions. Bio-chrom complies with this trend with many years of experience in the field of elaborate quality management, but most recent-ly also by having expanded its production capabilities. ? In what fields do you see com-petitive advantages?! For Biochrom, the industri-al market segment certainly promises the highest develop-ment potential. The benefit of outsourcing the manufacturing of solutions becomes evident for a growing number of potential customers. For industrial solu-tions, Biochrom AG has estab-lished two totally independent production divisions and with this a high security for a “just in time” supply of the products for our customers. We are capa-ble of fulfilling nearly all of our customer’s wishes regarding the quantity delivered and the bag-design. We are in the proc-ess of further increasing our flexibility through recruitment and constructual changes.

Genmab ist der Zweitplat-zierte des diesjährigen Euro-pean BIOTECHNICA Awards. Besonders im vergangenen Jahr hat die Genmab AS von sich reden gemacht, als das dänische Unternehmen einen milliardenschweren Lizenz-vertrag mit dem britischen Pharmakonzern GlaxoSmith-Kline (GSK) abgeschlossen hatte. GSK bezahlte mehr als 460 Mio. US-$ vorab und verpflichtete sich zu Meilen-steinzahlungen in Höhe von mehr als einer Milliarde US-$, um sich die weltweiten Rech-te für den Antikörper HuMax-CD20 gegen B-Zell-Leukämie (Phase III) zu sichern.

Wäh-rend das erst neun Jahre alte Unternehmen zunächst auf der HuMab-Technologie der einstigen Mutterfirma Me-darex Inc. aufbaute, wurde im vergangenen Jahr mit der Fragment-basierten Unibo-dy-Plattform dem Markt ein eigener Ansatz präsentiert, mit der stabilere und weni-ger immunogene Antikörper erzeugt werden können.

Genmab has won the 2nd place of this year’s European BIOTECHNICA Award. At the end of last year, the company was the subject of worldwide atten-tion after it closed one of the largest biotech-phar-ma deals ever with the Brit-ish giant GlaxoSmithK-line (GSK). GSK paid more than $460m and prom-ised to pay milestones of more than $1 billion for the worldwide rights to Hu-Max-CD20 against B-Cell leukemia, which is current-ly phase III testing.

However, GSK is not the only pharma company to realise the value of Genmab’s anti-body technology. Roche and Amgen have also partnered with Genmab. Following on from the large successes of its partnerships, Genmab is currently building up its own salesforce to sell HuMax-CD4 against T-Cell-lymphoma. In

its early years, the nine year-old Genmab depended on the HuMab-Technology of its former mother-company Me-darex Inc. Meanwhile, the 270 employee-strong company has developed a proprietary Unibody technology that is based on more stable antibody fragments and shows reduced immunogenicity.

Insgesamt 90 For-scher hatten im Rah-men des 1. BMBF-Projektforums Bio- t e c h nolog ie de s BMBF die Möglich-keit erhalten, die Er-gebnisse ihrer im Jahr 2006 abgeschlos-senen geförderten Forschungs-projekte dem BIOTECHNICA-Publikum vorzustellen. Nach-dem gestern Themen wie Agro-biotechnologie und industriel-le Biotechnologie auf dem Pro-gramm standen, widmen sich die letzten 14 Vorträge der Hu-manmedizin. Das Forum befin-det sich in Halle 8, Stand C26.

A first-of-its-kind comes to an end today: The final day of the first BIOTECHNICA’s “Project Forum Biotechnolo-gy”, initiated by the German

Ministry of Educa-tion and Research (BMBF), will host lectures that fo-cus on the results of medically orien-tated projects.

A total of 90 re-searchers have had the opportunity to present the results of BMBF-funded, biotechnology-related research projects that were concluded in 2006. The project

topics spanned every major ap-plication area in biotechnology. Yesterday, agrobiotechnology and industrial biotechnology were on the schedule, and the 14 short lectures today will con-centrate on the results of med-ically orientated projects. The forum open stage can be found in Hall 8, Booth C26.

? Welche Neuerungen wer-den uns bei der nächsten BIOTECHNICA erwarten? Wie lauten die Kommentare zum jährlichen Turnus?

! Viele Aussteller haben uns bestätigt, dass die Innovati-onsrate in der Biotechnolo-gie so hoch ist, dass sie sich gerne jährlich auf einer euro-päischen Leitmesse wie der BIOTECHNICA präsentieren würden. Inhaltlich werden wir das Partnering erweitern. Unser Ziel ist es, die gesam-te Prozessskette der Biotech-nologie auf der Messe abzu-bilden.

Mr Kühne, what are your conclusions this evening, the second day of the BIOTECH-NICA?

! We are entirely satisfied. We had the largest ever number of visitors on the first day of a BIOTECHNICA and a signi-ficant increase on the second day compared to the same day 2005. This lends real support to our new approach, which is based on new exhibition halls and a greatly enlarged concept.

? The traditional trade fair is one thing, the collate-ral events in the Conference Centre another. What are your impressions of these two aspects?

! A lot of exhibitors have told us that the innovation rate in the biotech industry is so high that they would like to present their products at a European lead event like BIOTECHNICA. As regards content, we will be enlarging the focus of the co-ming partnering forum. Our aim is that the whole biotech-nological process chain, from development to production, be put on display at the fair.
