W hen I was young, I wanted to be a hairdresser. My uncle lived on a farm miles from the nearest town, and when we visited him, I used to cut his hair. My sister always laughed and said it looked so funny, but it was fi ne for my uncle. He said it was only the sheep and

my co-workers were quite friendly, and when I left to go to university, they had a little party for me and gave me a lovely pen as a farewell gift.

As a student I had a variety of jobs in the summer holidays. I worked in an offi ce, in a restaurant, on a farm (not my uncle’s), at the airport and in a button factory. Yes, in a button factory. I can tell you, I never wanted to see another button again after that! The jobs were all a lot of fun, and I met some interesting people, but the money wasn’t all that good. It was fi ne for a student, but I couldn’t

After university I got a very good job as an engineer with an international company. Of course, I had to work long hours and I had to travel to different parts of the world: Asia, South America, all over

married. My wife wasn’t too happy that I was away from home so much, especially when our fi rst child was born. After the birth of our second child I took paternity leave for six months. And that changed my life. I decided that I didn’t want to spend so much time away from home any more.

My employer didn’t have any work for me in the company offi ce, so in the end I had to quit my job. It wasn’t easy to fi nd another job. In fact, I was out of work for nearly a year. Then an old friend from university called me one day and asked if I was interested in working for him. It was still engineering work, but there wasn’t so much travelling to do, and I could also work from my home offi ce at least two days a week. I didn’t need to think about it for too long. I said ‘Yes’ the very next day, and I’ve been working for him now for
