CAP HOORN Mario BürkiKap Hoorn (span. Cabo de Hornos, engl. Cape Horn) ist eine Landspitze auf der chilenischen Felseninsel Isla Hornos. Kap Hoorn ist, abgesehen von den abgelegenen, noch südlicher gelegenen Diego-Ramirez-Inseln, und ohne Berücksichtigung der manchmal ebenfalls zu Südamerika gerechneten Südsandwichinseln, der südlichste Punkt Südamerikas.Kap Hoorn wurde von einer Expedition des niederländischen Seefahrers Willem Cornelisz Schouten am 29. Januar 1616 entdeckt und nach Schoutens Geburtsort, der in der Provinz Nordholland gelegenen Stadt Hoorn, benannt. Vermutlich war aber bereits der Engländer Francis Drake schon 30 Jahre früher um das Kap gesegelt.Die Umrundung des Kaps gehörte zu den meistgefürchteten Schiffspassagen, wovon auch die Gründung der Gemeinschaft der Kap Hoorniers zeugt. Kommandierende Kapitäne, die das Kap Hoorn auf einem Frachtensegler ohne Hilfsmotor bezwangen, wurden Ehrenmitglieder dieser internationalen Gemeinschaft.Bis zur Fertigstellung des Panamakanals im Jahr 1914 war für Handelssegler die Umschiffung des Kaps die etwas günstigere Möglichkeit, vom Atlantik aus zur südamerikanischen Westküste zu gelangen. Die dafür ebenfalls in Frage kommende Magellanstraße, bereits Jahrhunderte zuvor von Schiffen der Niederländischen Ostindien-Kompanie durchsegelt, bot ihrerseits für Segelschiffe ebenfalls schwierige Wetter- und Strömungsverhältnisse.Am Kap Hoorn war vor allem die Passage vom Atlantik zum Pazifik gegen die Westwinddrift gefährlich und schwierig. Es forderte von den in diese Richtung segelnden Schiffen ein ständiges Kreuzen bei hoher See und Regen, Kälte, schlechter Sicht und Eisbergen. Die Besatzungen kämpften auf überfluteten Decks und in wild schwankenden Masten mit steifen Segeln und gefrorenem Tauwerk. Das Falsche Kap Hoorn sorgte durch die Verwechslungsgefahr für zusätzliche Schwierigkeiten der Navigation. Schätzungen zufolge wurde die See vor Kap Hoorn mehr als 800 Schiffen und mehr als 10.000 Menschen zum Grab und zum größten Schiffsfriedhof der Welt.Seit der Zeit des Goldrauschs wurden die Zeiten verglichen, die ein Schiff brauchte, um vom 50. südlichen Breitengrad um das Kap herum wieder auf 50° S zu gelangen. Den Rekord setzte mit 5 Tagen und 14 Stunden der Windjammer Priwall, einer der für ihre Geschwindigkeit berühmten Flying P-Liner. Am längsten brauchte hingegen das Vollschiff Susanna, dessen Kapumsegelung 1905 im südlichen Winter 99 Tage dauerte.Andere Kapitäne gaben auf und liefen Südamerika lieber über Afrika und Australien an. Bereits William Bligh, Kommandant der Bounty, hatte sich am 22. April 1788 nach mehr als vierwöchigem Kampf um das Kap entschlossen, lieber umzukehren und Tahiti über das Kap der Guten Hoffnung anzusteuern.
DER KOMPONISTMario Bürki wurde am 26. Oktober 1977 geboren. Er studierte Blasmusikdirektion am Konservatorium in Bern und erreichte am Diplom sowie dem Höheren Studienausweis das Prädikat “Sehr Gut”. Bürki besuchte Meisterkurse bei U.P. Schneider (Komposition) und Toshiyuki Shimada / Andreas Spörri (Dirigieren). Sein erstes grosses Werk - Szenen aus: Max und Moritz - erreichte am Kompositions-wettbewerb der World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) in Luzern den zweiten Preis und seine Komposition Indian Fire wurde am Wettbewerb Flicorno d’Oro Junior (Italien) mit dem Spezialpreis für das orginellste Konzertstück ausgezeichnet. Zwei seiner Werke (Cap Hoorn und 1405: Der Brand von Bern) wurden an der Mid-Europe in Schladming uraufgeführt. Im November 2005 wurde 1405: Der Brand von Bern vom weltbekannten spanischen Blasorchester «La Artistica Buñol» in Valencia aufgeführt.Mario Bürki ist Musikschulleiter an der Musikschule der Jugendmusik Ostermundigen. Als Instrumentalist spielt er Trompete, Klavier und Orgel. Mario Bürki erhält regelmässig Kompositionsaufträge und mehrere Werke wurden als Wettstücke im In- und Ausland gespielt. CAP HOORN Mario BürkiCape Horn is the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the Cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors› graveyard.
The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. However, sailing around the Horn is widely regarded as one of the major challenges in yachting. Thus, a few recreational sailors continue to sail this route, sometimes as part of a circumnavigation of the globe, and almost all of these choosing routes through the channels to the north of the actual Cape (though many take a detour through the islands and anchor to wait for fair weather to actually visit Horn Island or even sail around it to replicate a rounding of this historic point). Several prominent ocean yacht races, notably the Volvo Ocean Race, the VELUX5OCEANS and the Vendée Globe, sail around the world via the Horn, and speed records for round-the-world sailing are recognized for following this route.
THE COMPOSERBorn the 26 October 1977, Mario Bürki studied wind orchestral conducting at the Berne conservatory. He also followed courses in composition with Urs Peter Scheider and conducting under the direction of Toshiyuki Shimada and Andreas Spörri. His first grand scale work Scenes of Max and Moritz gained a second place in the composition contest in Lucerne organized by the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles ( WASBE). During the Flicorno d`Oro junior contest (Italy), Indian Fire was awarded a special prize in acknowledgement of its originality. Mario Bürki is regularly commissioned to write for Wind and Brass Band. Two of his works (Cap Hoorn und 1405 : Der Brand von Bern) were premiered at the Mid-Europe Conference in Schladming and several have been chosen as set test-piece for contests. Alongside his composing he conducts various Wind Bands and teaches trumpet and theory. Mario himself plays the trumpet, the piano and the organ.
