„Knubbelchen…“

…can snuggle, comfort, encourage

or just conjure a little smile on someone’s face …

Knitting up quickly and small enough to fit into a trave bag,

it makes for a nice little gift for any occasion

Materials:

35g (1.5 oz) sock yarn, approx. 5g of this in a light color for the head, 5g for

the hat and 22g for the body (For smaller children, sock cotton or other cotton

yarn is recommended since it is less prone to pilling.)

Set of 2.5 mm (US 1 or 2) DPNs, or size suiting your yarn weight

Filling to stuff head

 Tapestry needle, some cotton waste yarn to hold stitches

4 to 5 stitch markers (experienced knitters can manage without)

beg = begin

k = knit

k2tog = knit 2 sts together (right-leaning decrease)

kfb = knit front and back of the same stitch (increase)

pm = place marker

rd = round

rm = remove marker

sm = slip marker

ssk = slip, slip knit: slip one stitch knitwise, slip the next stitch knitwise, theninsert left needle into front part of both and knit them together through theback loops (left-leaning decrease)

st = stitch(es)

Head:

CO 40 sts, join to rd., PM at begin of round, k for 22 rds.

Body:

sm (beg of rd), k5, PM, k5 (= needle 1), k5, PM, k5 (= needle 2), k5, PM, k5 (=

sm (beg of rd), k4, kfb, sm, kfb, k4 – repeat 3 times more = 48 sts total

k for 1 rd.

sm (beg of rd), k 5, kfb, sm, kfb, k5 – repeat 3 times more = 56 sts total

k for 1 rd.

Increase the same way every other rd. always before and after the marker: kfb

until you have 17 sts before and 17 sts after the marker.

k for 1 rd = 136 sts total

Divide for legs (both for boy and girl version): 

We are now at the beg of rd in the center back with 17 sts on each needle.

k17 (= needle 1), k 17 (= needle 2), transfer needle 3 and needle 4 sts to waste

yarn (= 34 sts for ea. leg)

Use the just vacated needles to knit the leg: join to rd, beg of rd is now where

the yarn end is (in the crotch).

First leg:

*ssk, k to last 2 sts of rd, k2tog

k for 1 rd

ssk, k to last 2 sts of rd, k2tog

k for 1 rd

ssk, k to last 2 sts of rd, k2tog = 28 sts total

Finishing:

From the WS (inside), pull a doubled up piece of yarn from the center back at

the color change through as shown, pull neck tight and knot on inside. Stuff

head with filling, pull top of head closed and sew shut. (This spot will becovered by the hat.J )

Slightly roll up edge of hat. Pull hat onto back of head, making sure seams end

up at the sides. Sew hat to head a short distance from the edge so edge stays

rolled. Fasten rolled brim with a few stitches.

Loosely knot arms and legs, slide knot to lower end and pull tight.

Embroider a face if desired.

Hold the body upside down, fold in center back at purl row and cast on 68 sts

from the back loops of the purls (see picture), beg rd being in the center back.
