The first appearance of the Peace Prayer occurred in France in ACAB in asmall spiritual ma!a*ine called La 2lochette The Little 5ellG. 't was pulished inParis y a 2atholic association known as La Lig!e "e la Sainte#$esse  The+oly %ass Lea!ueG, founded in ACHA y a French priest, Father 1sther 5ou9uerel ADEEIACBJG. The prayer ore the title of :5elle pri6re 7 faire pendantla messe: " 5eautiful Prayer to Say $urin! the %assG, and was pulishedanonymously. The author could possily have een Father 5ou9uerel himself,ut the identity of the author remains a mystery.

The prayer was sent in French to Pope 5enedict K in ACAE y the French%ar9uis Stanislas de La 3ochethulon. This was soon followed y its ACAappearance, in 'talian, in L:#sservatore 3omano Mthe atican:s dailynewspaperN. "round ACBH, the prayer was printed y a French Franciscan prieston the ack of an ima!e of St. Francis with the title :Pri6re pour la pai4: Prayer for PeaceG ut without ein! attriuted to the saint. 5etween the two world wars,the prayer circulated in 1urope and was translated into 1n!lish.
