The elves and the shoemaker

You know boys and girls, no matter where youare from and no matter where you may now live:Christmas is a time for good cheer and happi-ness for all. And mothers and fathers through-out the ages have told their children special sto-ries. And these stories have gone from one fam-ily to another and from one country to another. Now they are known all over the world. One ofthese stories is The elves and the shoemaker, which was first told hundreds of years ago inGermany. But nowadays it’s known in everycorner of the earth.

There was once a shoemaker who, through nofault of his own, had become so poor that, atlast, he had only enough leather left to make onepair of shoes. That evening he cut out the shoesso he could work upon them the next morning. Then he lay down quietly, said his prayers andfell asleep.

In the morning he went into his shop to workupon the shoes. But what did he see? Why! Theshoes were standing on the table all sewn andpolished. The shoemaker was amazed. And hedid not know what to think. Who could havedone them for him? He picked the shoes up inhis hand and examined them more closely. Theywere so neatly sewn that not a stitch was out ofplace. They had been done by a master hand.

Later that day a rich man came into the shoe-maker’s shop. He was so pleased with the pairof shoes that he paid twice the price for them. Now the shoemaker had enough money to buyleather for two pairs of shoes.

He cut them out in the evening and the nextmorning went into his shop to work upon them. But he had no need to. For when he got there, the shoes were already finished. Both pairs wereso handsomely done that they were quickly sold. And then the shoemaker had enough money tobuy leather for four pairs of shoes.

Again he cut the leather out in the evening, andagain he found the shoes all finished the follow-ing day. And so it went on. What he cut out inthe evening was finished in the morning. Soonthe shoemaker was a rich man.

Dear Albert,

Thank you so

much for the de-

lightful presents

you continue to

send me. I was

so charmed by the

five golden rings;

they must have

been terribly expen-

sive - am I worth

so much to you,

my dear? My

house is full of

birds and trees

now. Please stop

sending any more.

You know you

shouldn’t spend so

much of your

money on me.

Love, Lucetta

“Quack, quack, quack.” Al-though there was a terrible noisein her living room Lucetta thoughtthat this noise had come from out-side. She carefully opened thefront door and almost slipped overa broken egg that lay on her door-step. “Oh no, not again. Anothersix geese like yesterday. And whatdo you suggest I should do withthose seven swans you keep chas-ing round my front garden?” sheasked one of the three postmen.

“That’s your problem,” said herpostman whose smile and friendlybehaviour had totally disappeared. His uniform had that strange whit-ish green colour which the carpetin the living room was beginningto show, too. His hands were trem-bling as he handed her the receipt.“P-p-please sign here. This lastweek has taken ten years off mylife. I think I’ll have to retiresoon.” His two helpers started toshove the tree with the partridge, the two turtle doves, the threeFrench hens, the four calling birds, and a small parcel with anotherFIVE GOLDEN RINGS, six geese... and seven swans into the hall.Pressing their handkerchiefs totheir noses, they rushed out of thehall as quickly as possible. Whilerushing off to get a shower, one ofthe unfortunate postmen slippedon one of the broken eggs thatwere lying all over the front gar-den. “I’ll kill those birds,” hecursed, while he was getting upagain. Slowly he walked off witha limp, holding his aching back.

Inside the house Lucetta cursedat the birds, too. Two of the par-tridges were watching her amidstthe mess. While Alphonso andDonald were fighting over Cecily, the prettiest partridge they hadever seen, Dick and Desmond keptcalling, “Merry Christmas, MerryChristmas!”

When Lucetta tried to make herway to the bedroom in order towrite a rather unfriendly letter toAlbert, she was almost hit by abomb-like white little object.“Quack, quack,” she heard fromabove. When she looked up shesaw three geese swinging gentlyon the lamp.

By now her carpet reminded herof some of the modern paintingsshe never had understood. Therewere exciting patterns of white, green and yellow, with a little bitof the original red colour of thecarpet.

Struggling hard, she managedsomehow to reach the upper floor, two geese walking in front of her, four more geese and two Frenchhens following her. The geese in-sisted on accompanying her intoher bedroom. After a hard, unla-dylike struggle she managed toconvince them that that was herroom. While she was writing theletter, she could hear peckingnoises on her bedroom door, whichreminded her of a terrible film byAlbert Hitchcock, or was it Alfred?

Dear Mr Twittle,

I appreciate your

affection for me.

But please stop

sending me these

presents. The

whole house is a

mess and my bed-

room is the only

place that the

birds have not

taken over yet.

But they are al-

ready pecking at

the door and try-

ing hard to get

in. Perhaps you

would like to visit

me. Then we could

talk about the

whole situation.

Lucetta Smiles

“Tap, tap, tap.” There was a gen-tle knocking on Lucetta’s bedroomdoor. It didn’t sound like the geesewho had kept pecking her door allthrough the night. So she openedthe door and, to her surprise, shesaw a lady standing outside. Be-
