Maestro Franz-Paul Decker was a conductor of international reputation who played an important role in musical life.

A native of the Rhineland, Maestro Decker studied composition and conduct-ing at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik and was a graduate of the University of Cologne. He made his conducting début with the Cologne Opera at the young age of 22. Four years later, he was called to Wiesbaden where he undertook the musical direction of both the Wiesbaden Symphony and the Staatsoper. Subse-quently, he became music director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra and in 1962, accepted the position of music director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic where he gained international recognition.

As a result of several European tours with that orchestra he was asked to fulfill engagements with some of Europe’s finest orchestras including all five major London orchestras, the Leningrad Philharmonic, the RIAS Symphony Orches-tra Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the French National Radio Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic, and Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Maestro Decker’s North American career began in 1965 with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. In 1967, he was chosen to succeed Zubin Mehta as Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for nine years. He then became artistic advisor to the Calgary Philharmonic and the Winnipeg Symphony. He was a regular guest conductor of the National Arts Centre Or-chestra where he was Principal Guest Conductor from 1991 to 1999. He regularly appeared as guest conductor with many other Canadian Symphony Orchestras.

Maestro Decker was the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, where he had been Music Director from 1986 to 1992. In Septem-

ber 1995 he was named Conductor Laureate of the New Zealand Symphony Or-chestra with whom he had enjoyed a highly acclaimed association of 30 years as well as holding the position of Principal Conductor from 1990 to 1994. In 1992 he led the Orchestra to the Expo at Seville, Spain, to perform with Kiri Te Kanawa.

Maestro Decker conducted 85 different operas during his distinguished career. In North America alone, he conducted performances at the National Arts Centre, the Opéra de Québec, the Opéra de Montréal, Houston Opera, Dallas Opera, Chi-cago Lyric Opera and Tulsa Opera. He conducted five different highly acclaimed productions of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, with Jon Vickers in the title role, in Chicago, Dallas, Montreal, Río de Janeiro and Barcelona.

He was a frequent conductor of concerts and operatic productions at the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires receiving great public and critical acclaim for his perfor-mances of Parsifal, Ariadne auf Naxos, Aida, Der fliegende Holländer, Fidelio and Tristan und Isolde. Between 1992 and 1998, he presented the complete Mahler cycle at the Teatro Colón. He also presented the complete Wagner Ring of the Nibelung there beginning in 1995 with Das Rheingold, Die Walküre in 1996, Siegfried in 1997 and Götterdämmerung in 1998. In July 1998, also at the Teatro Colón, he conducted Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier.

In the summer of 1997, Maestro Decker and the New Zealand Symphony staged the New Zealand premiere of Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung.

Maestro Decker worked with many of the world’s greatest soloists, including Artur Rubinstein, Emil Gilels, Shura Cherkassky, Clara Haskil, Ida Haendel, Martha Argerich, Hélène Grimaud, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jessye Norman, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Jon Vickers, and Sir John van Kesteren, with whom he regularly performed “An Evening in Vienna,” the cherished tradition of present-ing an evening of Johann Strauss’ waltzes, polkas, marches and arias. His televi-sion broadcast of a Christmas concert with Luciano Pavarotti and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, filmed at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal in 1978, is broadcast annually around the world.

Maestro Decker received awards and distinctions from the governments of Bra-zil, Holland, Germany and Canada.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Concordia University and an honorary doctorate of music from McGill University in 2002. In 2006, he had the honour of receiving the Cruz Sant Jordi, the prestigious Order of the Province of Catalunya, Spain.

Maestro Franz-Paul Decker will forever be remembered and honoured by music lovers all over the world, as a distinguished musician passionately committed to music and music as an educational force.

Le maestro Decker est le principal chef invité de l’Orquestra Simfònica de Bar-celone, dont il est le directeur musical de 1986 à 1992. En septembre 1995, il est nommé chef lauréat de l’orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle-Zélande, avec lequel il entretient une association hautement acclamée pendant 30 ans et dont il est chef d’orchestre attitré de 1990 à 1994. En 1992, il dirige l’orchestre à l’Expo de Séville, en Espagne, où il se produit avec Kiri Te Kanawa.

Il dirige cinq productions très acclamées de Tristan et Isolde de Wagner, mettant en vedette Jon Vickers dans le rôle prin-cipal, à Chicago, Dallas, Montréal, Rio de Janeiro et Barcelone.

Il dirige souvent des concerts et des productions d’opéra au Teatro Colón, à Buenos Aires, où le public et les critiques acclament ses prestations dans Parsifal, Ariadne auf Naxos, Aïda, Der fliegende Holländer, Fidelio et Tristan et Isolde. Entre 1992 et 1998, il présente le cycle complet des symphonies de Mahler au Teatro Colón. Le maestro Decker reçoit des prix et distinctions des gouvernements du Brésil, des Pays-Bas, de l’Allemagne et du Canada.

Il reçoit également un doctorat honorifique de l’Université Concordia et un doctorat honorifique en musique de l’Université McGill en 2002. En 2006, il a l’honneur de recevoir le prestigieux ordre Cruz Sant Jordi de la Catalogne, en Espagne.

La mémoire du maestro Franz-Paul Decker sera honorée à tout jamais par les mélomanes du monde entier, car il était un musicien distingué qui se consacrait passionnément à la musique et à son pouvoir éducatif.

Franz-Paul Decker 22 juin 1923 – 19 mai 2014

Le maestro Franz-Paul Decker était un chef d’orchestre de renommée internatio-nale qui a joué un rôle de taille dans l’univers de la musique.

Natif de la Rhénanie, le maestro Decker étudie la composition et la direction d’orchestre à la Hochschule für Musik de Cologne et reçoit un diplôme de l’université de Cologne. Il dirige un orchestre pour la première fois à l’opéra de Cologne alors qu’il n’a que 22 ans. Quatre ans plus tard, il est invité à assumer la direction musicale de l’orchestre symphonique de Wiesbaden et du Staatsoper. Il devient ensuite directeur musical de l’orchestre symphonique de Bochum, puis, en 1962, directeur musical de l’orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam, où il acquiert une renommée internationale.

À la suite de plusieurs tournées européennes avec cet orchestre, il est invité à se produire avec certains des plus grands orchestres européens, dont les cinq principaux orchestres de Londres, l’orchestre philharmonique de Leningrad, l’orchestre symphonique de la RIAS à Berlin et l’orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, l’Orchestre national de France, l’Orchestre de la Suisse romande, l’orchestre symphonique de Vienne, l’orchestre philharmonique de Moscou et l’orchestre de Santa Cecilia à Rome.

Le maestro Decker entame sa carrière nord-américaine en 1965 avec l’Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada. En 1967, il succède à Zubin Mehta comme di-recteur musical de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, auquel il se consacre pendant neuf ans.
