Huish has a very long history; it was originally founded in the 18th Century and named after its benefactor, Richard Huish, a Taunton wool merchant who made his fortune in London. The official opening of the Sixth Form College as we know it today was in 1991.

The College itself is on the site of an old Arboretum and each building has been named after the trees found on the campus. The Weeping Willow on the south side of the campus was grown from a cutting of the tree overhanging Napoleon Bonaparte’s home on the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic.

Today, lessons are taught in bright, modern classrooms using specialist equipment when needed. Science Laboratories are fully equipped for students to learn through practical sessions to complement the scientific theory. The Sycamore Centre is the hub of Huish Sport. Among the sports that students can play, either competitively or just for fun, are basketball, volleyball, badminton, rugby, football, hockey, netball and cricket.

The Arts are celebrated at Huish and we have a performance stage and dance and drama studio. Opened recently is the £2 million creative studio, designed to inspire the next generation of artists, graphic designers, photographers and architects. If you chose to study Music at Huish you will have access to one of the most modern and well equipped music suites and performance facilities in the country. Facilities include:

• Concert hall with Bösendorfer grand piano • 2 recording studios with RedNet Technology • 2 sound proof live rooms for recording • 5 purpose built practice rooms equipped with

pianos for instrumental lessons and individual bookings.

At Huish we are renowned for the talent of our musicians and excellence of teaching across the courses. Musicians at Huish have the opportunity to perform throughout the year in public concerts and can also become involved in a variety of Enrichment groups.

Huish A Levels and BTECsIf you are aged between 16 and 19 you can apply to Huish to study a programme of A Levels and/or BTEC courses. British A Levels are designed to be demanding and with real subject depth. This will enable you to have an improved understanding of the subject and be more skilled and better prepared for university and employment.

BTEC courses are coursework and exam based offering a more practical approach to learning. They are recognised by universities worldwide as valid entry onto degree programmes. They carry the same UCAS tariff as A Levels. An Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels and would be your whole Study Programme while an Extended Certificate, equivalent to one A Level, can be taken in conjunction with two other subjects.

You will be given advice on choosing your Study Programme right from the start. We want to ensure that the A Levels/BTECs you choose will enable you to fulfil your university and career ambitions.

Your Level 3 A Level/BTEC Study Programme will be two years in length and you must select a core of three subjects consisting of:

3 A Level subjects orA mixture of 3 A Level and BTEC Extended Certificate subjects orA single BTEC Extended Diploma subject

In addition to this you will spend time with your Tutor, complete an International Higher Project Qualification, have the opportunity to take your own language A Level and participate in Huish Enrichment. In the second year you can also complete an Extended Project Qualification.

For exceptional students there is the option to sit an additional fourth A Level.

January Start A LevelsFor students who have missed the start of term in September, we offer a January start for our A Level programme. Applications will only be considered from academically gifted students with a proven record of accomplishment and will take into account the chosen subjects.

Geography Geography allows you to explore familiar areas in more depth and in a more analytical way, but also to discover new topics and improve your understanding of the fragile relationship between people and the planet. Students need an interest in all geographical issues, both the human and the physical. At university you can study subjects such as Geography, Geology, Environmental Science and Oceanography.

Geology You may have looked at many of the topics covered in Geology before, such as plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes. Geology links them to processes deep in the earth as well as exploring the impact on humans. A key element of Geology is the study of rocks and the minerals that make them. They leave a set of clues as to how, when and in what environment they were formed millions of years ago; fossils provide a key to this puzzle. You will do this investigative work in the class, laboratories and, most importantly, the field.

German The course is arranged around the study of compulsory topic areas which have been selected to stimulate your interest in modern German society and culture. Broad themes studied are the digital world and youth culture, artistic culture in the German speaking world, multicultural society and aspects of Germany’s recent history, such as reunification. You will split your time between the classroom and the Language Lab and will also benefit from an individual 20 minute oral session with a native speaker every week.

Graphic Design Successful designers have keen visual awareness, an eye for an image and excellent visual communication skills. Graphic Designers embrace new technologies and love to experiment, they have great attention to detail and always meet deadlines. The course will build your knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary influences within the design industry and offer you access to state-of-the-art Apple Macs that feature industry standard software.

Early Modern History This course embraces a wide range of human activity and you will have the chance to broaden your interests, examine historical issues, challenge existing orthodoxies and engage with historical debates. The course covers Religious Conflict and the Church in England (c1529-c1570), Spain in the Age of Discovery (1469 -1598) and coursework on the Portuguese Empire. History is a good route into careers in Research, Law, Teaching, Finance and Corporate Graduate Programmes. Our History students have gone on to study History and other related degrees at Russell Group universities as well as Oxford and Cambridge.

Late Modern HistoryThis course embraces a wide range of human activity and you will have the chance to broaden your interests, examine historical issues, challenge existing orthodoxies and engage with historical debates. You will study Tsarist and Communist Russia (1855–1964) and The Making of Modern Britain (1951-2007). An important part of your second year is the study of circa 100 years of the history of the British Empire. Our History students have gone on to study History and other related degrees at Russell Group universities as well as Oxford and Cambridge. History is a good route into careers in Research, Law, Teaching, Finance and Corporate Graduate Programmes.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY…

Further Maths because the problem-solving

aspect of Maths really appeals to me. Studying it doubles the number of Maths lessons I have each week, allowing us to go into much more depth on the topics usually covered, as well as studying new topics, like imaginary numbers and hyperbolic functions. DANIEL / Further Maths

Law This is a fascinating and varied subject that will give you the opportunity to develop good powers of reasoning. You will cover the Criminal Courts, magistrates and juries and law-making including a court visit. It also covers an introduction to criminal law, elements of a crime, fatal and non-fatal offences against the person and Criminal Court procedure. Students go on to do many different subjects at university but many each year go on to study Law at Russel Group institutions.

Mathematics (Core)Core Mathematics is a one year course (equivalent to a Level 3 AS) for those who want to keep up their valuable mathematics skills but who are not planning on taking A Level Mathematics. Core Mathematics has been designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and the course includes a financial maths element. It will also help with other A Level subjects, in particular with Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology and Economics.

Mathematics You will study pure mathematics and its applications in statistics and mechanics. The central role of algebra in the development of the main ideas and in proving key results means that the course is well-suited to students who enjoy working with algebra and are confident in its use. The two areas of “applied” mathematics, statistics and mechanics, are both compulsory. Statistics covers areas such as probability and probability models, whilst mechanics develops methods for solving a range of problems using tools such as Newton’s laws. Previous students have studied Engineering, the Sciences, Computing, Economics, Finance, Medicine, Veterinary Science or Architecture at university.

Page 18: INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTUS 2020/21 · evaluation, logic and problem solving. ... • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Studied in Year 2, this is an extended project of approximately

Mathematics (Further) This double A Level course covers much of the single Mathematics A Level in the first year before moving on to explore the more complex topics that make up the content of a second A Level in Further Mathematics in the second year. Further Mathematics is for the strongest and most committed A Level Mathematics students who really enjoy learning about this wide ranging and fascinating subject and who would typically be expecting to complete four A Levels in total. Most Further Mathematics students go on to study Mathematics, the Physical Sciences, Engineering or other competitive courses. It is also very useful for Computing, Economics and Finance.

Music As an A Level Music student you will perform, compose and study music in an exciting environment where individuals achieve their highest potential. The course provides students with a balanced and interrelated programme covering a wide academic and practical understanding of music. The approach is holistic with a variety of set works studied from classical to film, world and popular music. This is an academic course which can lead to studying Music at university or music college/conservatoire, followed by careers in performing, composing, teaching or working within the arts.

Photography During this course you will work with our specialist equipment and experienced teachers on a variety of technical and themed projects. Technical projects are based on extending your ability in the darkroom, photographic studio and out on location, with both digital and film cameras. In themed projects you will develop ways to communicate your ideas and concepts to an audience through your photographs. Visiting artists and regular trips to galleries help you to make well informed work at a high standard, setting your portfolio apart from others when you apply for a place at university or Art College.

Physical Education Studying this course will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. You will learn why some people outperform others, mentally and physically. You will delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and the influence that modern technology is having on sport and sport performance. Through exercise physiology, biomechanics and practical coursework you will gain the knowledge to understand and improve both your own and others’ performance. Performance in one sport is an entry requirements for this course.

Physics Physics will be of interest if you are curious about the world around you, how things work and the fundamental nature of the universe. You cover mechanics, materials, waves, electricity, particles and quantum phenomena (the behaviour of things on an atomic scale), fields, electro-magnetic induction, thermal properties, radioactivity and nuclear physics. You will also study astrophysics, covering the operation of telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the evolution of stars, supernovae and cosmology. The course includes a significant amount of practical experiment work which you carry out in our well-equipped laboratories.

SpanishYou will split your time between the classroom and the Language Lab and you will also benefit from an individual 20 minute oral session with a native speaker every week.
