What do we have to do?

One of our church members gave me an article to read from the Progressive Christian magazine.

The title was Measuring Faith regarding spiritual vitality assessment. The author is Rev. Dan R.

Dick, United Methodist pastor at the General Board of Discipleship. He claims that mainline denomi-

nations are in a panic. They are losing members and resources, and they are responding to the cri-

sis with the best models that business schools can buy. The trouble is, the Church of Jesus Christ

isnt a business, and to run it like a business may be one of the reasons that Protestant churches are

in trouble numerically, and have so little moral influence on society today. He suggests six factors to

measure church vitality in order to start looking at ourselves in a new light.

I enjoyed reading this article and pondered again in many ways. There are many articles about

church crisis with analysis and suggestions. Still the question is What do we have to do? I have

contemplated this issue prayerfully. Is there any formula to make a church grow? What do we have

to do? Small churches are struggling for survival. Big mega churches are also wrestling with main-

taining. People are indifferent in their spiritual life. Religious life has become old fashioned. Secular

culture vacuums people up from the church. To what, then can I compare the people of this genera-

tion? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling out to each

other; We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not

cry.(Luke 7:31)

Again, what do we have to do? Is there anyone who knows the answer? I keep asking the Lord. I

am anxious for an answer. Here are my simple thoughts and the actions I can take.

The food pantry waiting area was alreadypacked with families when I arrived for duty. No Tto waste!I hurried to the back to help other volun

teers fill brown paper bags with a weeks worth ofgroceries for each and every family who was waitin line.

Could you grab me some tissues? one othe volunteers asked.

I reached for the shelf where we kept thetriple Ts, short for toothpaste, tissues and toiletper. But the shelf was empty. Oh, no! Were out everything! What now?

Before we could organize a run to the stoanother volunteer arrived with several full-to-the-bgrocery boxes. I thought it was about time I dropthese off, she said.

People like to be invited. Jesus invited

people. We invite people to the Lord.

We are called to build a faith comm-

unity. Do not wait for people to need

our Loving touch!

So, what is it we have to do? I myself do

first the simple things that I can do. Unless

I do first, no one else can do these things

for the Lord. The answer is within us. Let

us not become weary in doing good, for atthe proper time we will reap a harvest if we

do not give up (Gal6:9)

The Proper Focus of Our Worship- by Lisa Abel

Worship is a specialtime. In Gods house. Godspeople step away from thedistractions and difficulties ofdaily life and gather as aspiritual family in the prom-sed presence of God Him-self. Why do we come? Whats the primary focus of ourworship? On what we do? Oron what God does for us?

Certainly there are things that we do in ourworship. We join with brothers and sisters in the faithand call upon God to be with us. We humbly and sin-cerely admit how far we have fallen and how wehave failed our God. There, in worship, we join ourvoices in hymns of prayer and praise.

But if we think of worship as primarily some-thing to do, we are missing the most important partof worship. Worship is about what God does for us.

Above all, God is speaking to us through Hisword. In readings and sermons, God instructs,strengthens, equips and motivates His people forives of Christian service. Worship is where Godcomes to us and assures us of what He has done forus. In turn, He also reminds us of the mission that Hehas now entrusted to us.

When the focus of worship is on what God

does for us, then our worship will be a blessing. It willhelp us to understand ourselves and all of our weak-nesses. It will direct us to the grace and love of God.t will transport us to the foot of the cross, where Je-sus demonstrated a love both undeserved and in-conceivable. It will fill us with joy that continues longafter the time for worship ends.

Sad to say, many lose sight of this primaryfocus and think of worship as primarily an activitythat they do. When that happens, people tend to de-velop certain unhealthy expectations of worship.

They begin to view worship as something that shouldbe fun or entertaining. I call this a consumer ap-proach to worship, and face it, worship cant alwaysbe about everything wewant. Dont run the risk ofosing sight of what Godwants to do for us in thatprecious time in His house.

With Groceries piled high in the back seat, Ipulled into the driveway one Saturday after-noon and rolled down the window. Hows the kitten?called to my husband, Bill, who was busy mowing thelawn. We hadnt had our baby Siamese long, and Icouldnt help but fuss over our new family member.

Jodie hasnt let her out of her sight, Bill reported. Joour Border Collie, proved to be a born cat sitter. I hit tgarage door opener and reached for the gearshift. Joplanted herself right in front of the garage, blocking mway. Cmon, Jodie, I yelled. Move it girl! I wanted tget my hands on my little fur ball and this dog was keing me from her.

Bill had gone back to his mowing, and Jodie refused tbudge. Exasperated, I got out of the car in a huff. BefI could scold her, I saw a flash of gray shoot out fromunder the car. The kitten!She must have run under thcar while I was talking to Bill. I would have run her ovenot for Jodie. Good girl, I said, ruffling her fur. BordeCollie, cat sitter, and now, guardian angel.

Coming August 15

A Missions Haiti Night with the Haitian singers from

the Methodist Church in San Diego, who delightedus with their singing at the Spring Concert, will be

there along with Rev. Lynne Austin who will report

on her trip to Port Au Prince in July. We sent ove

36 dresses and diapers with her on that trip. She

volunteers at Hope Children's Hospital there.

ing for home-less Vets in

Oceanside, Es-

condido and

maybe San

Marcos. Many of these folks are returning

from war zones and are unable to get jobs.

Tragically, too many are physically and men-

tally wounded and need help adjusting back

into civilian life. Being so close to Camp Pen-

dleton where the marines are stationed, we

have a great many Vets in our area.

As you can imagine, it's going to take a lot of

things to furnish these apartments so look

around and see if you have any of the follow-

ing items to donate: furniture, household

goods, lamps, dishes, pots and pans, linens

and any other items that help to make a more

comfortable living space. Linens can be used

but in GOOD condition.

We will also collect baskets of condiments

to help when they move into their apart-

ments such as coffee, tea, sugar, catsup,

mustard, oil, spices, etc. Use your imagi-nation and remember how it was when you

started housekeeping. They will get food

from Interfaith. We are providing the ba-

sics. There will be a sample basket at the

church by August when we will begin col-

lecting things.

"LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH AND LEARN"

This is one clear

choice we must make if weare to survive in this world of turmoil. If we areto Live, we must allow the Love of God to bethe driving force in our life.

We can't afford to stumble through life with adoom and gloom attitude. Life after all is a livingthing, a bright and glorious gift from the Lord ofLord's and King of King's.

Once our heart is focused on Christ then we

will live life in the Love that will not let us go.Acts 2:28; "Thou hast made known to

me the ways of life: Thou shalt make me full ofjoy with Thy countenance."

How many people in this world todayare seeking this life, this peace, this everlasting

joy? How many have come so close yet fallenaway because they chose not to trust, not tobelieve? If we are to find true life we must seekGod, and as we seek Him, we will learn what

true love is.Our hearts will laugh and take joy in

learning of Him, for His Word is the life forcethat brings us into that precious relationship,that is Love.

Romans 1:17; "For therein is the righteous-

ness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is

written, The just shall live by faith."

By the way, in case you haven't no-

ticed, we are living in days of change and chal-

lenge. We are very well living in the last day,

the precious days, when God is unfolding His

Power among men. Who among us could say

that what we face in the Gulf is a challenge that

man cannot fathom?

We look to man for answers, but the

answers are not there. We must trust in God

to bring life back to the oceans that have

been blackened by the oil of man's greed.

Yes! We find ourselves in what seems an im-

possible situation.

But, has God allowed even this for ou

good. As men join hands and work together

to restore the devastated places. As people

join together to pray for God to intervene in

this seemingly impossible situation. Remem-

ber Dear Friends ,it only takes a mustard

seed of faith to bring miracles of God's Grace

Jude 1:21-25; "Keep yourselves inthe love of God, looking for the mercy of ourLord Jesus Christ unto eternal life And ofsome have compassion, making a differenceAnd others save with fear, pulling them out othe fire; hating even the garment spotted bythe flesh. Now unto Him that is able to keepyou from falling, and to present you faultlessbefore the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.

If we are to survive this oil spill crisis,or any other thing that seems impossible, wemust stand firm in the Love of God, walkingby faith and not by sight.

As I read this scripture from Jude it re-minded me of the people literally drowning inoil, the fish, the birds, the wildlife, the jobslost, the generations of a lifestyle gone in onemighty blow. But, this reminds us that wemust have compassion. We must be willing tomake a difference. We must be ready willingand able to pull those out of despair whohave lost everything. If we are to live, wemust love. That we can laugh again, andlearn from those things that have threatenedto destroy us.

GRILLED SUMMER VEGGIES

Ingredients:

1 yellow pepper

1 orange pepper

1 red pepper

5 portabella mushrooms

2 peeled sweet potatoes

Extra virgin olive oil, salt & pepper.

RECIPE

Preheat the grill to medium heat. Cut the washed

veggies into long strips or rounds, 1/4 to 1/2 thick. (slices that wont fall through the grill.

1.Brush with olive oil and season with salt & pep-

per. Working in batches, grill the veggies until

tender and lightly charred all over.

2. Arrange the veggies on a platter and serve hot

off the grill.
