Summer vacation: Where are you going?
What are your plans for this summer? Are you planning on spending extra time with your family and
friends? Are you planning a vacation to have fun in the sun? Where are you going? This summer I
want us to think about preparing for a summer. Where does God want you to go during this summer
break? What journey does he want you to take that you may discover his grace and power more
now than you ever have?
John the Baptist in Matthew 3 was preaching and proclaiming the message of preparation. He knew
what his destiny was for this season in his life. He knew where he was going. If you do not settle in
your heart the direction that the Lord has for you then you will wander during this summer with aim-
less direction. If you do not aim for anything, you will be guaranteed to hit it every time. You need toget in a place where you can hear from God and discover where he wants to take you. Maybe he
wants to take you:a. to a deeper place of understanding grace
b. to a place of developing self-control
c. to a place of loving your enemies
d. to a place of developing your integrity
e. to a place of sacrifice and holiness
f. to a place of better friendships and closer family ties
"My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him." (Psalm 62.1)
Where are you going? No matter where you are going, I hope and pray that you may find the place
that you rest upon the love and grace of the Lord. May your soul rejoice with God this summer! Have
a great summer!

BLESSINGS AS OPPORTUNITIES
In these times of our lives, it is often easy to ob-
serve only problems and concerns and to forget
quickly our blessings and opportunities. No
matter how many problems and challenges are
presented to us, we all receive blessings and
opportunities from God. What we often overlook
is that with each blessing we receive, we alsohave a responsibility to use this blessing as an
opportunity to enhance Gods people and Gods
worldand that is what this years stewardship
campaign is all about.
We are all thankful or the myriad blessings be-
stowed upon us by Gods grace and love for us.
It extends from our own personal lives, to thoseof our family, to our church family, and to our
greater world family. But as Christians and dis-
ciples of Jesus Christ we are called to do much
more than simply count or be thankful for our
blessings; we are called to mission and to the
opportunities to express our
blessings by proclaiming
Gods Word, showing his love
for others through our efforts,
and providing service andeducational opportunities for
ourselves and our community.
Our churchs children and youth ministry has
received a number of blessings this year; in-
cluding an active and thoughtful church school
program, a very successful Camp Program and
an inspiring ministry program. Still much more
is needed to fulfill our obligation to respond to
these blessings from God.
(continued)
Building on blessings bestowed on us in rec
years, what if we could now express these ble
ings by expanding our youth education program
an evening Christian education program cente
on a childrens choir, which would permit expand
youth learning opportunities other than those
fered at each weekly Sunday School session?
this would take additional resources and your comitment to provide the funds and help for this
occur. Your increased financial giving this year c
also serve to enhance the blessings of additio
opportunities we can provide to our youth a
young adult ministry .
It is up to us to capitalize on our blessingsjust
God intendedand in so doing, glorifying HGod does not give us ideas for worship and serv
without also giving us the resources and will
achieve them. We need your financial express
of blessings to achieve our opportunities this yea
Do you feel blessed enough to generously expre
your blessings?

CELEBRATIONS WITHOUT ALCOHOL
Memorial Day is over, graduations and
the fourth of July are over and Labor
Day is coming. Each of these celebra-
tions is becoming more and more associated with
alcohol.
Following the Memorial Day weekend, the CHP re-
ported an increase in the number of DUI arrestsfrom 1,465 in 2009 to 1,541 this year. They also
reported an increase in the number of DUI related
deaths.
Seeing our children graduate makes us beam with
pride. However, many are also concerned that lives
are ruined by some alcohol-fueled tragedies asso-
ciated with graduates.
Holidays are a time to celebrate. Maybe that
should also include our freedom from alcohol de-stroying families.
When will we learn that alcohol does
not need to be a part of our holidays or
celebrations? Set an example

RUN!
In the award-winning film Chariots of Fire, one ofthe characters is legendary British sprinter HaroldAbrahams. He is obsessed with winning, but in apreliminary 100-meter dash leading up to the 1924Olympics, he is soundly beaten by his rival, EricLiddell. When his girlfriend, Sybil, tries to encour-age him, Harold angrily declares, I run to win. If Icant win, I wont run! Sybil responds wisely, Ifyou dont run, you cant win.
(continued)
Life is full of reversals, and we as Christians not excluded from disappointments that makewant to give up. But in the race that is the Chtian life, Paul challenges us to keep running. told the Corinthians, Do you not know that thowho run in a race all run, but one receives prize? Run in such a way that you may obtit (1 Cor. 9:24). We are to run faithfully, Pausaying, spurred on by the knowledge that we to honor our King and to receive from Him eternal crown.
If we falter in our running-if we quitserving God or give in to sin becauseof our difficulties-we risk losing a richreward we could have received hadwe run our best.
Sybil was right. If you dont run, youcant win.

ANDY ROONEY ON GAMBLING
Below is the text from the Andy Rooney segmenton 60 Minutes, May 16, 2010.
I have good news for you tonight. According to anAmerican Gaming Association report, revenue fromcasino gambling fell by almost two billion dollarsast year.
A lot of people are out of work and it turns out thatwhen people are unemployed, they gamble less.Youd think they might gamble more but they dont.Theres some goo things about everything, I guess.
n 2008 the casinos earned $32.5 billion. Last yearthey earned only $30.7 billion. I use the words
earned and only loosely but casino income wasdown a lousy little two billion dollars last year. Itsenough to bring tears to your eyes.
ts a law for people to protect themselves by wear-ng seat belts for their own safety when theyre in acar. How come the government doesnt protectcitizens from losing their money by makinggambling in casinos illegal? There should be asign in front of every casino that says enter at your
won risk..of losing your shirt.
The thing that bothers me most about gambling isthat people fritter away money so they dont get tospend it on things that someone else has beenpaid to produce. Gambling produces nothing.
(continued)
Theres only so much money in the world and if lost at a gambling table, its money that isnt spon things America makes. I mean whos best this countrya machinist at an automobile planDetroit or a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas?
The gambling casinos keep something like 20 pcent of everything bet for themselves, so thereschance of anyone but the casinos willing over a riod of time. They make billionsand where do billions come from? They come from all of us cause were the losers. I mean, suckers is wwe are.
If I write as though I was above all this, Im not wing right. Ive gambled half a dozen times in LasVegas and even though I know how dumb it is, Ithink I can win. Ive never won but that doesnt stme from thinking maybe next time.

PRAYING THE PSALMS IN THE GAP
By Eugene H. Peterson
Mine is not the latest thing on prayer, but the old-
est: the Psalms, obvious and accessible as tools
for prayer in the work of faith.
I do not explain them: commentary
is not the primary need. I want to
provide a kind of owners manual. I
dont mean to suggest that the
Psalms are easy: prayer is not
easy. But the practice of millions of
Christians through centuries of use
is adequate proof that we do not
have to acquire expertise in the Psalms before
we use them; they themselvesprayers that trainus in prayerare the means to proficiency. We
dont have to understand a crowbar before we put
t to use. Understanding comes with use.
The practice of Christians in
praying the Psalms is
straightforward: simply pray
through the Psalms, psalm
by psalm, regularly. John
Calvin expressed the con-
sensus of the praying church
when he wrote that the Psalms are the design of
the Holy Spirit . . .to deliver to the Church a com-
mon form of prayer. Liturgical traditions have
prayer books to guide them
through a monthly cycle of
praying the Psalms daily.
The rest of us can easily
mark the Psalms into thirty
or sixty daily sections to
guide an orderly monthly or
bimonthly praying of all the
Psalms.
Thats it: open our Bibles to the book of Psal
and pray themsequentially, regularly, faithf
across a life-time. This is how most Christians
the most of the Christian centuries have matu
in prayer. Nothing fancy. Just do it. The pray
itself is deliberate and leisurely, letting (as Be
dict of Nursia directed) the motions of the he
come into harmony with the movements of
lips.
So I sought for a man among
them who would make a wall,
and stand in the gap before Me
on behalf of the land, that I
should not destroy it . . .

"A SPACE IN TIME"by Dianne Collier
Give me a space in time where I may see you Lord. A gift of your amazing Grace,In a moment of my searching,
May I see you face to face,
And in that moment, Lord, please listen,As I share my broken heart.Give me reason to know You are with me, And dear Lord, vision for a brand new start.
Through all the years of questioning,Trace each step with love divine,
For You are the hope I long for,And the peace I know I shall find.
As I let go of all my dreams,And come into that place of perfect peace,Knowing that You have brought me hereTo be reborn in sweet release.
Most of us have had a broken heart at som
point in our lives. God comes to heal the bro
kenhearted and to set the captives free. Whe
we allow God to reach down and release u
from sin, we will truly experience the healing o
our broken heart. The heaviness from the bu
dens we carry will be gone the instant we allo
Christ to touch our heart and soul and deliver u
from sin. May the space in time God ha
brought us to be a time of release and receiving

"AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE"
by Dianne Collier
Dare I say, we all probably need an atti-
tude adjustment. Circumstances and situations
produce change in our life that often times brings
us to our knees. But therein lies the choice, do we
sit and sulk, or stand and fight. Do we run from our
problems or meet them head on, trusting Jesus to
make a way? Yes, life comes at us hard but we
have the strength of our faith to see us through
and give us confidence, not in ourselves, but in
what Jesus can do, when we let go and trust Him.
Evelyn Christenson wrote a little
book years ago titled, "Lord, ChangeMe!" That is my prayer tonight as I wrestle
with things in my life that need change. Per-
haps this is at the center of all change
when each one of us individually realizes that if
change is to take place in our life, it must first be-
gin in us.
ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE TO CHANGELet me ask you a question,
which will take us to the heart of the
matter. How many times have you heard a sermon
or witnessed change in a life, and said, I know
someone who really needs to hear this? This is
the problem we find in recognizing the challenge in
life to change. If we are busy trying to change
someone else, we are way off track. When we fi-
nally are able to realize that change must
first begin in us, then we can move forward, in
faith.
But before we can make that first step of faith we
must understand that we can only change, when
we say, "Lord! Change Me!"
WHAT DOES CHANGE MEAN TO YOU?
We all can and will answer this question
different ways. Perhaps there are many things G
has yet to reveal to you concerning the chang
that needs to take place in your life.
I would like to share someth
with you that has changed my life evthis night. Let me begin by confessing t
I'm a fixer, a worrier, and a procrastina
And, Yes! I know all these things a
more are very prevalent in my life. But, as I talk
with our daughter tonight she pinpointed one w
that describes each one of them. "Idols." Som
how I had never realized this before. By the w
learning to say no is not in my vocabulary. This,
the way, has gotten me into a lot of trouble o
the years. This verse seems to say it all!
We must realize that anything that kee
us from truly trusting God can quickly become
idol. At the same time when we realize that G
longs for us to trust Him in all things, we are a
to lay everything at His feet knowing that our he
enly Father Knows Best.
In the difficult times in which we live i
worship can become a real problem.
Many people are out of work, unable to
imagine how they will make it through.
The world is changing at such a fast pace t
most folks just don't know which way to turn. Si
ness has befallen many of us and we don't se
to have the faith to trust God to be our Great P
sician and healer. As we continue to read in M
thew 6 we are given the answers, which ag
turns us from worshiping the idol of fear and f
ure, to living by faith.
