anD Change

A conict o interest between a sustainable and an aes-

thetic consideration o architecture does not exist or

Daniel Libeskind. On the contrary he believes that really

great architecture will always remain beautiul and true,

and thereby sustainable.

On account o his unmistakable creations, Daniel Libe-

skind is considered to be one o the most extraordinary

architects in the world. His work is characterised by nar-

rative stylistic elements. Rooms are designed to exhibit

dierent characters, proportions and materials, with the

actor o light also playing an important role in his build-

ings. His major achievements, oten in close associa-

tion with the world o art and culture, include the Jewish

Museum in Berlin, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto,

the Denver Art Museum and the Imperial War Museum

in Manchester. His original design or the new construc-

tion o the destroyed World Trade Center in New York

(Freedom Towers) won the invitational competition. He is

currently working with Zumtobel on a masterpiece that is

intended to reect the nature o light.

The secret behind the renvatedentrance hall f the blue building at 87

Avenue de la Grande Arme in Paris isa minimalist design and use f exclu-sive materials. The simple elegance

f the rm is underlined by a shinylapis lazuli flr. At the same time, theclur f the stne is reminiscent fthe blue f the riginal glass faade.

A pleasing cntrast is achieved by thewalls and clumns faced with Thasssmarble. The bright white and the finelyveined marble harmnises wnderfullywith the deep blue f the lapis lazuli.

The unique impressin iscrwned by a unifrm ceiling f 200m: flurescent lamps in tw dif-ferent clurs illuminate the fyerhmgenusly, imparting it with anair f flating lightness. Making Of

Back in the1980s, Zumtobel was the rst company in the

lighting industry to develop application-oriented presenta-

tion o luminaires in cubes, a particularly impressive way

o presenting light eects. On the basis o this concept,

the rst Light Forum came to exist in Vienna in 1996. This

signaled the companys progress rom lighting manuac-

turer to proessional lighting solution specialist, a position

that has been progressively strengthened since then. In

line with the vision to communicate this driving passion

or light, Light Forums and Light Centres are settings or

experiencing light, illustrating the entire range o design

eects that this versatile building component is capable

o. The basic idea is to work with renowned architects in

an eort to create places that take into account the local

conditions, while also emphasising the corporate ull-

ment o a central requirement. The Light Forum in Vienna

is evidently a Hans Hollein design, while the architects

Sauerbruch-Hutton were responsible or designing the

Light Centre in Berlin, and the architects Bolles + Wilson

designed the Light Forum in Lemgo.

Zumtobels three Light Forums and teen Light Centres

all over the world oer an opportunity or amiliarisation

that goes ar beyond a presentation o products. The light

communication sites also serve to oster and develop

customer relations by staging top architectural events.

Whether people meet in the Light Centres in order to work

or simply to explore, the centres are intended to dem-

onstrate the Zumtobel philosophy o light to customers
