KALAMELA 2008

KALAMELA 2008 created inspiration and activity amongst the communities involved, including the artists, audiences and community organisations. This program has the potential to generate momentum over time that would see the great wealth of professional, and traditional culturally diverse art presented to broad audiences, as a reflection of our rich and diverse society. It featured stage performances by some of the finest and the most talented artists around Adelaide. A large audience enjoyed the performers' vigorous yet graceful moves in a showcase style, which is a succession of short programs Lt. Governor Hieu Van Le inaugurated Kalamela 2008 and said that these types of events will certainly contribute to the multiculturalism in Australia. As an indication of our programs are well accepted among other communities, more than half of the tickets were sold to non-malayalees. The tickets were sold out weeks before the program and for our future programs, members are encouraged to book tickets as soon as available.

EDITORIAL Dear readers, Winter has set in and it’s back to that time of the year when we have to keep ourselves warm. Please come along and join for all the sports activities. Your participation and encouragement will definitely make a difference. Time flies quickly indeed, and we are already half way through this year. So many happy events and some tragic disasters have also occurred during these past few weeks, like the earthquake in China and the cyclone in Burma. We are fortunate to live in a peaceful environment while things are happening around us. We could see more fresh faces around after those sleepless nights watching the IPL extravaganza. AMMA ’s most popular out door event Family fun day was blessed with plenty of sunlight and gorgeous atmosphere. Events started with Indian National Anthem followed by Australian National An-them. Community members thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant weather and participated in various events which was amazing. This years event was outstanding with a number of new events for all age groups. BBQ and ever popular Tug-of-War made the event memorable.

Mr. Paul Zachariah, Kerala Sahithya Academy award winner, celebrated novelist, and essay writer, visited Adelaide on an invitation from AMMA. As a part of the visit, executive committee organised a potluck dinner and ‘Sahithyasamvadam’ with our members. This was well received among our members, which again showed how closely they are linked with Malayalam literature and social issues. The 59-year-old socially and politically committed writer does not look over his shoulder when he expresses his opinions. During the “Sahithyasamvadam”, he stressed the need for teaching our children Malayalam and cultural values to enable them to communicate well with our motherland. He also pointed out that knowledge of the mother tongue will strengthen the personality-base of the child and he or she will be more equipped to deal with increasingly globalised world.
