    Adopt-a-Highway DetailApril 5, 2008

I want to THANK the 14 squadron members who helped with

the Adopt-a-Highway Project and with the landscaping projectat the new hangar. This was very hard working group of ca-dets and senior members who filled a total of 48 trash bags(the most we have had in 10 years), and who also picked up 5tires and other assorted goodies! Notably, most of the trashthat was picked up was on airport property and not along theroadway.

A total of 10 officers reported for duty along with four cadets.

It was especially impressive to have two of our newest officers assist with this project, Bill Johnston and Doug Han-son. What a welcome to the squadron!

Thanks again to everyone who helpedmake the day a success. Everyone did anoutstanding job!

Energy Drink Consumption Predicts Risky Teen Behavior(Research Summary)

Recent research suggests that teens and young adults who consume energy drinks may be at greater risk of a number of higrisk behaviors, such as unprotected sex, alcohol and other drug problems, and violence, the New York Times reported May 2

While some young energy-drink users have become physically ill after consuming the products, experts are also worried abothe relationship between use of the high-caffeine products and risk-taking. A March 2008 study in the Journal of American Colege Health, for example, linked energy-drink use among athletes to a variety of high-risk behaviors. "It appears the kids whare heavily into drinking energy drinks are more likely to be the ones who are inclined toward taking risks," said study authorKathleen Miller of the University of Buffalo.

The beverage industry contends that most energy drinks contain caffeine levels comparable to a cup of coffee, but expertsnote that because they are served cold, energy drinks can be consumed more quickly than hot coffee drinks. Mixing energydrinks with alcohol also is a growing concern because the stimulants in energy drinks can mask the intoxicating effects of alchol and allow drinkers to stay awake longer and consume more alcohol.

"You're every bit as drunk, you're just an awake drunk," said researcher Mary Claire O'Brien of Wake Forest University BaptiMedical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
