MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Liebe Eltern, liebe Schülerinnen und Schüler, liebe Lehrerinnen und Lehrer,

Dear parents, dear students, dear teachers,As announced last time, you receive this circular from Bangkok where I'm attending the spring meeting of all Headmasters of the German Schools in Southeast Asia. We will discuss recruitment, final exams and extra teachers training.

An important personnel decision for the upcoming school year was taken this week: Mr. Lawrence Buck signed his contract as Head of the International Section starting in August. Welcome to GESM, Mr. Buck ! You may find further information on Mr. Buck in the official announcement of GESM in this circular. Furthermore I would like to welcome Ms. Lea Lecher as our new intern from Germany. She teaches the subjects English, Economics and German as a Foreign Language and will be with us until the end of the school year.

Ms. Huber contributes a write up on Sean Rosenthal´s IB visual arts exhibition yesterday in the auditorium. Today all grades 3 to 10 of the German Section took an active part for the first time at GESM in the Math contest Känguru – I am very keen to hear about the outcome of our participation in this quite unique math contest. To-morrow our grades 6 to 11 will have their Secondary Sports Day, our students will compete in swimming, sprint, long jump and Frisbee – I wish everyone success and good results. The detailed program of this event you will find in this circular as well. Alexa Borroughs of grade 12 tomorrow will present her IB Music Solo Recital in the audi-torium at 1:45 pm which I unfortunately cannot attend. Aleksa Ross will do her presentation next Monday in period 5 in the auditorium which I hopefully will be able to attend. Herewith I invite everybody to both presentations. Next Monday we will have another special

event: 4 GESM graduates will report on their experiences studying in Germany, they are Mia und Rocio Naval, Sharon Nitschke and Ra-phael Camara. Another concise announcement of Mr. Dragoiu refers to the participation of 6 GESM students in an international workshop focusing on particle physics at Concordia International School in Shanghai. For next week Tuesday Mr. Simmelbauer announces the world wide celebrated World Book Day at Eurocampus which is initi-ated by UNESCO to promote reading and books. Very important with this day is the announcement of the winners of the reading contest “Around the World in 80 books”.

From grade 6 we received a write up of three students reporting on their Healthy Breakfast with class teacher MS. Herrnleben.

Looking back to last week our Guidance Counselor Mr. Victor Clack updates us on two university workshops held at GESM both infor-ming our students on studying at Mint College in Taguig City and University of Sydney.

As you can see our students are very active outside the classrooms as well. I would be very happy to see this continue till the end of the school year as this additional activity adds the extra something to school life.

wie im letzten Rundbrief angekündigt, melde ich mich diese Woche aus Bangkok vom Frühjahrstreffen der Schulleiter der Deutschen Auslandsschulen Südost-asiens, wo wir uns u.a. über Personalrekrutierung, Abschlussprüfungen und Fortbildungen austauschen.

Eine wichtige Personalentscheidung für das kommende Schuljahr wurde diese Woche getroffen: Herr Lawrence Buck hat seinen Vertrag als Leiter der Internationalen Abteilung ab dem kommenden Schuljahr am Montag unterzeichnet – willkommen an der DESM, Herr Buck ! Weitere Angaben zu Herrn Buck finden Sie in der offiziellen Ankündigung der DESM in diesem Rundbrief. Außerdem begrüße ich als Praktikantin Frau Lea Lecher, die bis zum Schuljahresende in den Fächern Englisch, Wirtschaft und Deutsch als Frendsprache ihr Schulprak-tikum bei uns absolvieren wird.

Frau Huber hat einen Bildbericht über die die Visual Arts Ausstellung von Sean Rosenthal gestern im Auditorium beigesteuert. Heute haben die Klassen 3 bis 10 der deutschen Abteilung zum ersten Mal an der DESM am Wettbewerb Känguru der Mathematik teilgenommen – ich bin gespannt auf die Ergebnisse dieser etwas anderen Mathematikprüfung. Morgen findet der SEK-I-Sporttag der Klassen 6 bis 11 statt. Alle Schüler werden sich im Schwimmen, Sprint, Weitsprung und Frisbee messen – ich wünsche viel Erfolg und gute Ergebnisse. Das genaue Programm ist ebenfalls in diesem Rundbrief zu finden. Alexa Burroughs aus Klasse 12 wird morgen um 1:45 im Auditorium ihre IB-Musik-Solopräsentation vorführen, die ich leider nicht miterleben kann. Alexa Ross wird ihre entsprechende Präsentation dann am kommenden Montag in der 5. Stunde im Auditorium vorführen, zu der ich hiermit ebenfalls einlade. Am nächsten Montagmittag werden außerdem 4 ehemalige

SchülerInnen der DESM von ihrem Studium in Deutsch-land berichten: Mia und Rocio Naval, Sharon Nitschke sowie Raphael Camara.

Weitere Ankündigungen beziehen sich auf die Teil-nahme von 6 DESM-Schülern internationalen Physik-Workshop zum Thema Teilchenphysik, Herr Dragoiu informiert uns ausführlich über diese Exkusion nach Shanghai. Herr Simmelbauer kündigt für nächste Woche Dienstag den EIS World Book Day an, der von der UNESCO initiiert weltweit gefeiert wird und auch am Eurocampus die Lust an Büchern und am Lesen fördert - ganz wichtig ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Siegerehrung des Lesewettbewerbes „Um die Welt in 80 Büchern“.

Aus der Klasse 6 D erreicht uns ein Bericht von drei Schülern, die über ihr gesundes Frühstück mit Frau Herrnleben berichten.

Rückblicke: Unser Guidance Counselor Victor Clack berichtet von zwei Workshops, die Universitäten an der DESM durchführten, um über das Studium zu informie-ren: das Mint College in Taguig City und die University of Sydney.

Wie Sie sehen können, sind die unsere Schüler auch außerhalb der Klassenräume zurzeit sehr lebendig – ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn dies so bis zum Ende des Schuljahres beibehalten werden könnte, denn diese zusätzlichen Aktivitäten sind für das Schulleben gewis-sermaßen das Salz in der Suppe.

The German European School Manila (GESM) welcomes Mr. Lawrence M. Buck as Head of International Section of GESM

I am pleased to announce that effective August 2017 Mr. Lawrence M. Buck will be heading GESM’s International Section, succeeding Mr. Nicholas Lea who has been with GESM for 10 years and who has been the founding head the school’s International Section.

Mr. Lawrence Buck has been a dedicated educator and school leader for the past 25 years. He has successfully taught in and led six British International educatio-nal institutions in Europe and Asia. Lawrence was also director at the Southville Global Education Network and founding headmaster of Mahatma Ghandi Inter-national School as well as Beacon International School in Manila.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Lawrence Buck to German European School at Eurocampus Manila!

Dear Grade 6-11 parents,

We’d like to remind you about the upcoming secondary sports day on Friday, March 17th. Please ensure your child has the relevant sport and swimming equipment. Sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle are also recommended since the stu-dents will spend most of the day outside.

You are very welcome to visit the school on that day and cheer for your child. You may also wish to volunteer as an official. If this is the case, please contact Mr Ransom at: bransom@gesm.org

The event briefing will start at 7:30 am and end at 1:30 pm. There will be no afternoon classes but ECA’s will continue as normal.

Invitation to Scholastic Book Fair

Dear Parents and Families:

World Book Day, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world is also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books - the biggest celebration of its kind.

The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. We invite your entire family to participate our Scholastic book fair by purchasing the latest and greatest children’s books. Your support of this vital literary event is the key in helping us obtain resources for our library as 15 percent of total sales will go towards new book acquisitions.

Reading is the key to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they are young. There will never be a substitute for your direct involvement in your child’s education.

Dear GESM Family,

The University of Sydney visited GESM on March 8, 2017 to share with students of both the French section and the IB section about admission opportunities. Students in grade 11 received a lecture about the benefits of studying in Aust-ralia, course, options, admission requirements, and suggestions on how to choose a university.

On March 3, 2017, GESM also hosted MINT College from the Philippines. This is a business, performing arts, and tech-nology college. They met with students in the classroom and performed during Sports Day. This was an exciting time and a great opportunity for students to learn about local university options.

Das Gesunde Frühstück der Klasse 6 D

Am Freitag, den 10.3.2017, gab es für die Klasse 6 D wieder das gesündes-te Frühstück unserer Schule: Das gesunde Frühstück!

Wie schon letztes Jahr trafen wir uns und stellten unser selbst gepflücktes oder gekauftes Obst und Gemüse vor.

Unsere Klassenlehrerin Frau Herrnleben hat für uns alle mit Frau Gro-schupp zwei blaue Tische besetzt. Es war besonders gut, in der Pause das gemischte Buffet von nahrhaftem Obst und Gemüse nach dem schweißbringenden, anstrengenden Sportunterricht zu genießen, wo wir Staffellauf für den Sporttag am 17.3.2017 geübt hatten.

Als wir endlich beisammen waren, stellten wir unsere mitgebrachten Lebensmittel auf den Tisch, setzten uns auf die Bänke und begannen zu essen. Wir stürzten uns auf das Buffet mit Tellern in der Hand und nahmen uns etwas Essen. Jeder hatte seinen eigenen Geschmack und Favoriten, sogar Arvid mit seiner Pomelo, die er sicherte und nicht so leicht abgab. Marc bekam Bauchweh, weil er 21 Wassermelonenstücke aß. Während wir gegessen haben, hat Ansley Tirtasana ihre Ukelele gespielt und wir haben natürlich gesungen. Jeder half jedem die Schüsseln zu reichen oder etwas auf die Teller zu tun. Deswegen denken wir, dass das gesunde Frühstück gut ist und wir es die-ses Jahr nochmal machen möchten.

This week mark the beginning of the first edition at GESM/EIS of the International Masterclasses hands on Particle Physics. The program was introduced by the science teacher Mr. Tiberiu Dragoiu Luca, and 7 students enrolled in the IB Physics SL/HL are participating: Adrian Misselwitz, Louie Guinita, Jorge Abad, Ethan Floro, Heinrich Hug, Zoon Her, and Chen Liu. What are The International Masterclasses hands on Particle Physics? At its 13th edition, the International Masterclasses hands on Particle Physics provide an opportunity for high school students to discover particle physics using real research data provided by CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The program takes place every year during March/April, in more than 200 places in 52 countries with more than 13000 participants worldwide. The International Masterclass program allows students with interest in particle physics to mingle, connect, and discuss cutting-edge research. Students get insight into topics and methods of basic research at the fundamentals of matter and forces, perform measurements on real data from the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) particle physics experiments at CERN, and participate in international video conferences for discussion of re-sults. There are 4 different experiments currently running at CERN: CMS, ATLAS Z/W, ALICE, and LHCb. It is estimated that there are about 70 students attending from other international schools in Shanghai too. The focus in Shanghai is on the CMS experiment. In addition to the theoretical research analysis of experimental data, the students will also have the opportunity to visit a similar particle accelerator like the one at CERN, the Shanghai Synchrotron Radi-ation Facility. Stage 3: Saturday, March 25 at 10 am, (Friday, March 24 at 8 pm in Chicago) video conference with physicists from FermilabLocation: GESM Stage 4: Video conference with physicists from CERN, scheduled at 4 pm CET, meaning 11 pm in Manila !?
