    The strict

    Hello, friends in America

    .

     \'

    We praise the Lord

    for

    a safe

    return

to our home in ^Italy. He had

    beautiful

    flights from Tulsa to

    Roma,

    then Roma to

    Brindisi. All went

    well.

    All

    our luggage arrived

    with

    us and

    got

    through customs

    O.K.

    We

    had a

    good

    day at

    the

    airport in Roma visiting with

    Americans

    and

    Italians. Charles spent the

    last 45

    minutes there before

    our

    connecting

    flight to Brindisi explaining to

    a young

    American woman married to

    an

Italian the difference between the Roman Catholic beliefs

    and

    the

    Word.

We praise God for opportunities He

    affords

    us everywhere.

    We miss all

    of

    you and. want once again

    to

    say "Thank you"

    to

    all who

    ministered

    so

beautifully to us during our short stay in America. To those

    we didn't

    see this time, we look

    forward

    to being with

    you

    our

    next

    furlough.

    Upon our arrival, Caranita

    Wolsieffer

    and

    Jim

    Cormode picked us up

    at

    the airport

    (in two

    cars

    to

accomodate our luggage). While Jim and

    Charles caught up on

    news

    of the

    work,

Ivia and Caranita did the same.

    There

    are, as

    usual, exciting things going

    on,

    such

    as

    new contacts

    through the radio,

    new

prospects for Fall Bible Study, new developments

    in.the

    lives

    of people discovered through

    Radio

    Incontro shortly before

    we left

    in

    April...AND

    camp is

    in

    full swing In fact,

    Charles

    is out

    there as I (Ivia)

    write

    this bit of news to

    you.

    Also, we have

    been

    to

    the

    Air Force Base

    Chapel, renewed our

    friendships

    and made

    new

    contacts

    there.

Charles will be speaking in the public square

    of

    a town north

    of

    here

with other missionaries...more of this later.

    A

    sad note:

    yesterday we

    were present

    at

    the funeral

    of

    a 13-year-old

    girl,

    Mara,

daughter of Nicola and Franca, whom

    Charles had-known

    since

they were small children. Mara had suffered brain damage

    at

    birth.

    She

    lived

    her

    entire life

    paralyzed, unable to

    give any sign of

    understanding

    what

    was

    said

    to

her. Please pray with us for her

    parents.

    Since she re

quired constant and complete care and love,

    for

    all

    these years

    Mara had

been their very life. Now there will

    be

    a much needed rest

    and

    adjustment,

    but

    very hard

    for

    these

    fine

    Christian parents.

Well, dear ones, that's a part of

    the

    news. More later. Please keep

    praying

    and

supporting the work here as God blesses us each one.

    Love and prayers.

'We give thanks to God always for ail of you,

making mention of you in our prayers,"—I Thess.l:?

    WHEN GOD

    is

    SILENT

    Page 5

    WHEN

    GOD is

    SILENT

    Page 6

    jority so choose,

    but we

    cannot turn drink

    ing into

    a sin.

Anything that God tells us not to

    do

    is

obviously wrong, even if to our carnal mind

    it seems acceptable.

    And

    anything

    that

    God

    tells

    the church or individual Christians

to do is necessary to the object of His

    command. If

    we

    are sure that

    a

    person in

    a

situation comparable to our own was told

    to

    be baptized,

    or

    to

    wash someone's

    feet,

    or to

    babble

    nonsense, then we

    should

    obey

    God's voice regardless

    of consequences

    But

    when we legislate in

    God's

    place, no

    one

is obligated to follow our laws.

SILENCE GIVES CONSENT— Since all that

    is

essential is commanded, and all that is

    essentially

    wrong

    is forbidden, then

    every

    thing else

    is

    a matter of opinion.

    When

    God

    speaks, we

    must obey. When

    He chooses

    not

    to

    speak, men are free

    to think and

    act for themselves.

    Which means

    that in any

    society, in the absence

    of God's expressed

    command

    or

    prohibition,

    the

    majority rule.

    So

    if any group

    chooses

    to

    not use instru

    mental

    music

    in

    their assemblies, they have

hat right. If they attempt to forbid the

    use of instrumental

    music for

    others, they

    have no right.

    This principle holds

    tirue

    in

    every

    re-

    matter:

    If

    God

    requires

    any

    action,

    it is

    essential; if God

    forbids

    it,

    then

    action

is never acceptable; and if God

is silent, every man has a right to hold an

    is free

    to express

    it (as

    his

    and practice

    it as

    he

    pleases.

    If God would

    have been

    displeased

    by

    any

would have said so. When He

    so,

    there is no law—we are

    to do or

    not

    do the

    action. Those who

this freedom, who legislate for their

    of

    confusion

    and

    ontroversy.

    They

    have mistaken

    their

    ideas

    God's,

    and demand that

    their conscience

    the actions of all other

    without

    regard

    to the others'

That Jesus made His church to be

    ONE

    is

    obvious.

The Bible is not silent on

    this matter.

    In their common love for

    Je

    sus, and

    in

    their obedience to His every

wish, all Christians should be united. He

    is Lord of us all.

    Those who cause

    division

    in

    the body

    are

    condemned by

    God.

    And those

    who

    cause

    di

    vision

    include those who

    attempt

    to force

    their

    opinions

    on

    their brothers by making

    laws

    where

    God made no law.

    Each

    Christian

    should examine his

    or

    her own actions, and

cease from every attempt to impose private

    and

    personal

    desires

    on

    others.

    We are to

    teach

    and uphold

    Gospel truth

without apology. But our opinions must NOT

    be

    taught

    as

    law. If you

    can

    see that you

    have

    been

    teaching

    as law more than God

actually, clearly, plainly says, right now

is the best time to stop such

    teaching,

    and

    to attempt

    to

    rebuild unity by

    now

    standing

    firmly

    on

    God's truth (placing your own

opinions on a lower standing than

    His).

Every Christian should be meeting with

    the other Christians

    in

    his

    or her

    com

munity every Lord's Day in order to wor

ship and work together to serve God as

    the

body of Christ. If you have let your

    opinions keep you

    away

    from

    the

    common

    meetings, resolve

    that from

    now on,

    you'll

place God's command above your personal

    feelings.

    The

    Bible

    is

    our

    guidebook. If you

    have

let other books or other people

    be your

    authority,

    resolve

to study the Word of God

    and let it speak to

    you and through you

    from now

    on.

    Cod

    condemns

    what

    is wrong.

    God

    commands all that

    is essential.

    You

    need not fear His wrath

    for

    doing anything

    He has

    not said

    is

    wrong/

    In

    Christ, we are

    free.

    If you know

    someone who makes his own

    opinions

    equal

    to God's

    law, if

    SILENCE MEAN?

    In that

    study, he

    listed five of

    the

    most

    fre

    quently cited Biblical passages supposed

    to prove that everything God

    has

    not

    commanded is

    sin.

    A

    FAITHFUL OFFERING

    The

    first

    example was that of Cain's

    rejected offering (Gen.4:1-7). Hebrews 11:

4 points out that Abel s accepted offering

    was

    "by

    faith", which

    implies

    that Cain s

    (it

    was

    rejected

    by God) was

    given

    with

    doubt

    of

    God's acceptance. Abel

    was

    confi

dent that God would be pleased by his

    gift.

    And God WAS pleased.

    Faith is used in

    more

    than

    one way in

    the Bible,

    which makes a

    logic

    chain

    sometimes illogical if

    one

    verse (in the

    chain)

    refers to

    one meaning

    of

    the

    word

    and another to

    a

    different

    meaning. During

    the time

    of

    the Law, God accepted both

    animal sacrifices

    and

    also

    offerings of

    wheat and other

    vegetable

    matter. The'Word

    doesn't fully

    explain

    why

    Cain

    chose to

    make an

    unacceptable offering (laziness?

    rebellion?

    indifference?). But we can be

    sure that if

    we

    think

    our

    service is less

    than

    should

    please

    God,

    that

    what we offer

    in

    doubt

    is

apt to be rejected by the Lord.

    Yet the only

    reason we should

    doubt

    is

    if

    we

    are

    disobeying His plain revelation

    God told Noah

    to

    build an

    ark

    (a

    boat)

    of

    "gopher"

    wood (Gen.6:9-21).

    Noah

    built

the ark and it floated—whether it had a

cedar closet for Mrs.Noah's finery is

    surely

    immaterial. One good

    brother

    says

    authoritatively that gopher

    wood

    was

    a

    class of

    resinous

    woods which included both

    cedar

    and

    pine trees. We don't really

    need

    to

    know. Noah knew,

    so there was

    no

    prob

    lem.

    The Incident proves

    nothing about act

    ing in

    God's

    silence. God

    clearly

    said what

    Noah was

    to

    do.

Some scholars seem quite sure what Paul

    meant

    by the

    expressions,

    "psalms, hymns

and spiritual songs" in advising the early

    church

    to

    sing

to one another. Most of us

    are less certain. To

    build

    a doctrine on

    uncertainty seems careless

    at

    best. Those

    who make a

    law condemning

    instrumental

    music

    need very

    strong and

    sure

    evidence

indeed to justify their adding to God's

Word, just as we would to make a law re

    quiring

    it.

    To build doctrine

    on

    gopher wood is

    a

poor use of carpentry (Noah was to

    build

    a boat

    rather than

    a

    church). They go too

    far

    who

    insist,

    upon

    the basis

    of

    being

    limited

    to

    exactly what

    is

    commanded or

    exampled, that

    one

    or another

    action

    is

    anti-scriptural,

    such

    as

    that divided

    clas

    ses are sinful

    because

    we find no such ex

    ample

    or

    command. Similar

    "logic"

    is

    used

    to exclude instrumental

    music, located

    preachers,

    church

    buildings,

    choirs,

    and

    many other commonly-accepted religious

    practices.

    STRANGE

    FIRE

    Consider Nadab and Abihu (Lev.10:1-11).

    Careful study

    of

    this text

    will show

    that

    their

    "strange fire" was not

    a

    matter of

    opinion,

    but

    of

    disobedience. The King-

James translation here lends itself to

    misunderstanding. Compare the example in

    the

    early church

    of Ananias and Sapphira,

    whose

    sin

    also brought swift dispatch.

    Korah and

    followers (Numbers 16:1-11)

    died.

    In Numbers 3:10,

    a

    clear command

    from

    God said that

    Aaron

    and his sons were to

    serve

    as

    priests,

    that anyone

    else

    who

approached the sanctuary of God must be put

to death. It was not, then,

    a

    matter of

    opinion.

    God commanded that the

    ark

    was

    to

    be

    carried

    by

    four Levites

    on foot.

    Uzzah

    (2

    Sam.6:1-11) likely

    meant

    well, but he was

    breaking

    a

    clear command when he touched

    the

    ark

    and

    died.

    CONSEQUENCES

    OF SIN

God is holy. His Word is law. Surely

each reader will see that men have

    no

    right

    to

    add

    to His

    commands,

    or

    to disobey

    Him.

    The wages

    of sin is death.

    None

    of us

    want

    to displease

    God

    at

    all. But if an excess

of piety makes us "put words in His
