ESADE Campus in BarcelonaAnordnung der Gebäude des Campus der Universität ESADE.

Bei dem Projekt wurde ein bestehender Gebäudekomplex an den neuen Verwendungszweck als Gebäude für Lehrveranstaltungen angepasst. Bei der Umgestaltung mussten unter anderem Räume für großes Publikumsaufkommen geschaffen und die Eingangsbereiche erweitert werden. Von dieser Prämissen ausgehend entstand unter der Erdlinie und parallel zu dem Verkehrsweg Avenida Pedralbes ein Komplex, in dem das Audimax und der Ausstellungssaal untergebracht sind. Bei der Anlage wurde darauf geachtet, die großen Kiefern, die auf dem Gelände stehen, zu respektieren. Das Dach dient gleichzeitig als repräsentativer Hauptzugangsbereich für das Universitätsgebäude. Der einstöckige Gebäudeteil oberhalb der Erdlinie enthält Eingangsbereich und Verwaltungsbüros und grenzt an das bereits bestehende Gebäude an. Es bildet den neuen Haupteingang zur Universität.

The project consists in the reorganization of an existing building so as to provide functional spaces which better meet the needs of teaching activities.These requirements also include the provision of areas for public use as well as the extension of the reception areas. Based on these determining factors, a below ground area has been created parallel to Pedralbes Avenue to house the auditorium and exhibition hall. This development has not disturbed existing large pine-trees and the resulting outside area gives access to the school building. This area and the adjoining existing building, functioning as access and administration areas, are configured as a single ground-floor and creates a new entrance image to the building.

Die Bedingungen des Geländes verlangten ein Gebäude, das einen großen Höhenunterschied ausgleichen musste, so dass der größte Teil in Form von Innenhöfen und einer ausgedehnten Grünanlage auf dem Dach gestaltet wurde. Das Projekt besteht aus zwei Teilen:das Gebäude unterhalb der Grünanlage und das Gebäude oberhalb davon. Das erste enthält alle großen Hörsäle, die Bibliothek und die große Eingangshalle. Das zweite besteht aus drei einzelnen Gebäuden, in denen sich die kleinen Hörsäle und die Räume der Dozenten befinden. In dem unterirdischen Bau sorgen Innenhöfe für Beleuchtung und Belüftung. Die Aussenfassade besteht aus L-förmigen senkrechten Elementen, die zur Anordnung der Fenster und als Sonnenschutz dienen.


The conditions for the work of realignment required conceiving a building which could successfully incorporate a significant difference in floor level. Most of this had to be resolved through internal courtyards while maintaining a large garden area. The project has two components: the building situated below the large garden and the other above it. The former houses all the big classrooms, library and reception area. The latter consists of three separate buildings containing smaller rooms and the staffroom. The ‘buried’ section is set out as an arrangement of internal courtyards which provide light and ventilation. The resulting building is configured through a series of vertical elements, 10 meters in length and with an ‘L’ section measuring 60cm x 80 cm which allows the positioning of windows and protection from glare.

Das Baugelände bot zu Beginn unterschiedliche Voraussetzungen: Es hatte eine starke Neigung nach Westen und war von großen Nachbargebäuden umgeben. Bei dem Entwurf kam es daher darauf an, die topographischen Gegebenheiten zu berücksichtigen und einen einheitlich wirkenden Gebäudekomplex zu schaffen. Dabei spielte die Wahl des passenden Materials eine wichtige Rolle.Das Projekt analysiert und nutzt die Ausdruckskraft von Betonblöcken, einem kostengünstigen, leicht verfügbaren, vielseitig einsetzbaren und leicht zu verarbeitendem Material.

A site with several initial determinants: on one hand an area with a significant slope towards the west and the landscape of Mallorca’s plain, and on the other hand, the presence of adjacent premises with a considerable volumetric importance. Das Schulgebäude besteht aus einem einzigen linear verlaufenden Block, in dem alle Klassen von Vorschule bis Abschlussjahrgang untergebracht sind. Die Klassenräume sind in aufsteigender Reihe angeordnet. Durch die kompakte Bauweise konnte der begrenzte Platz des Grundstücks optimal ausgenutzt werden.Gleichzeitig stellt der Schulbau die Grenze der bebauten Fläche des Ortes dar, denn jenseits beginnt die landwirtschaftlich genutze Fläche.

Der kürzlich genehmigte Bebauungsplan sieht als Struktur für den Süd Campus der Universität einen zentralen Platz mit senkrecht verlaufenden Achsen. Die neuen Universitätsgebäude werden mehrheitlich zweistöckige Flachbauten sein, zwischen denen einige höhere Gebäude für Auflockerung sorgen und einen isotropen urbanen Raum zu schaffen.Das neue Fakultätsgebäude wird im Erdgeschoss die Hörsäle, angeordnet um einige Innenhöfe, enthalten. Im oberen Geschoss sind die Laborräume untergebracht. Der Bau ist streng in Module unterteilt, so dass eine Ausführung in mehren Phasen über das kommende Jahrzehnt hinweg möglich ist.

The recently approved Urban Plan lays down guidelines for the organization of the South Campus based on perpendicular axes and a central space that fosters a model which will accomodate the new University buildings conceived as having two-storey bases and higher tower blocks, generating an isotropic urban space. The new Faculty will situate classrooms in the building’s base, opening out onto lower courtyards; the laboratory area in the upper block the whole project adhering strictly to a modular design with a view to completion in phases over a decade.

Dieser Bürokomplex steht im Gewerbegebiet Can Sant Joan von Sant Cugat de Vallès. Das Gewerbegebiet liegt im Norden Barcelonas in der Nähe mehrerer wichtiger Verkehrsachsen. Der aus drei Teilen bestehende Komplex besteht aus EG und 5 Stockwerken, die durch einen gemeinsamen Platz auf Höhe des Erdgeschosses verbunden sind. Die drei Blöcke rahmen den Eingangsbereich ein wobei aber jedes ein individuellen Zugang besitzt.

This office complex is situated in the ‘Can Sant Joan’ Trading Estate in Sant Cugat del Vallès. Set in a rural environment, it is built near important transport links and strengthens the so-called Valley Corridor. The building is conceived as three spacial blocks of PB +5, placed on a platform or base which links them to the ground floor level. Thus, an architectural welcome is created bounded by the built spaces. Three separate lobbies on the ground floor allow independent access to the building.

Neuer Sitz des ICTA-ICP der UAB Büros, Abteilungen und Labors für den Sitz des katalanischen Instituts für Umwelttechnologie und das katalanischen Instituts für Paläontologie.

Der Entwurf zitiert traditionelle Bauformen und setzt auf die Schaffung eines durch Energie und programmatische Flexibilität geprägten Modells.Das vorgeschlagene Modell ist durch seine substanzielle Struktur in der Lage, Fragen hinsichtlich städtebaulicher Einfügung, Energieeffizienz sowie programmatischer und soziologischer Aspekte zu lösen. Es entsteht ein flexibles und lebendiges System, das das Vielschichtige vereint und in dem Architektur und Energieeffizienz zusammenfließen. Das Gebäude versteht sich als selbstständiges System zu Energiesparen und Dezentralisieren der lokalen Energieversorgung, als erstes Modul des SMART GRID (Jeremy Rifkin).

The proposal puts forward a recognizable, traditional model in architectural terms, which aspires to become a reference in terms of energy use and programmed flexibility. The proposed model is, by nature of its substancial structure, able to resolve issues to do with urban implantation, programming, energy efficiency and sociology. A live, flexible system is created which unifies diversity, where architecture and energy efficiency are the same. Akademie der medizinischen WissenschaftenNeuer Sitz der “Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques i de la Salut de Catalunya i de Balears”.

Die Form und die topographischen Gegebenheiten waren zusammen mit den städtebaulichen Vorgaben die Hauptkriterien nach denen das Projekt gestaltet wurde. Der Standort, für dieses von der Ronda de Dalt aus sichtbare Gebäude, liegt am Rande von Barcelona am Fuße des Höhenzugs Collserola. Bei dem Entwurf kam es darauf an, einen mehrteiligen Komplex an die Gegebenheiten des Geländes anzupassen. Das Gebäude erscheint von Außen linear und einheitlich und bietet im Inneren individuelle Zugänge zu verschiedenen Bereichen des Programms, einige unterirdisch oder semi-souterrain. Wegen der Lage am Hang liegt der größte Teil der Anlage unter der natürlichen Erdlinie des Geländes, so dass von der Strasse aus die Dächer zum sichtbarem öffentlichen Raum werden. Das Gebäude ist die Akademie der medizinischen Wissenschaften von Katalonien und den Balearen, die aus über 70 Firmen und 21.000 Mitgliedern besteht.

The shape of the plot, topography and urban parameters were the main determinants in proposing a building which integrated with the surroundings, visible from the Ronda de Dalt. The placement of the building contributes to the extension of the city towards one of the outer neighbourhoods, sited on the skirts of Collserola. The building is conceived as a response to the question of how to create an articulated construction which adapts to the morphological conditions of the land where it is set. The building, which shows an integrated linear aspect from the outside, allows access to all the built spaces, some of which are partly or fully underground. Given the urban conditions, the development is in tune with the natural slope of the land, such that the open areas become urban spaces visible from the street. The building is planned as a center for the dissemination of advances in medical science among the large medical community of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, made up of more than 70 societies and 21,000 members.

Der Vorschlag basiert auf dem Wunsch, ein funktionales und flexible Zentrum zu schaffen, das sich ins Stadtbild einfügt und eine zeitgenössische Ergänzung zu den historischen Gebäuden des alten Hospital Marítimo bildet. Das neue CHARE in Torremolinos steht für die effiziente Gesundheitsversorgung in Andalusien . Das Krankenhaus verfügt über Bereiche zu Reha-Behandlungen, Probenentnahmen, Radiodiagnostik, Praxen zur primärmedizinischen Betreuung, eine Tagesklinik und eine chirurgische Abteilung.

The proposal stems from the wish to create functional,, flexible features which would not only respect the urban environment but which would also adapt to it through a contemporary reinterpretation of the portico spaces which characterize the old Maritime Hospital. The new CHARE inTorremolinos is introduced as an efficient method of assistance which underpins the institutional and symbolic nature of the new public health constructions in Andalucia. The center includes sections for rehabilitation, extractions, X-rays, primary health visits and day hospital as well as an operating theatre.

Krankenhaus Ernest LluchNeues Kreiskrankenhaus

Das Projekt zielt auf die Auflösung der Grenzen zwischen Innen- und Außenbereichen. Durch das Aufweichen der Übergänge soll die Spannung gebrochen und eine Kontinuität geschaffen werden, bei der die Architektur Grenzen markiert aber nicht beschränkt. Der Vorschlag musste mit einer ungünstigen Umgebung kämpfen und es wurde eine große Grünanlage geschaffen, um die Schwierigkeiten zu überwinden, die durch die Randlage des Grundstücks mit starker Lärmbelästigung bestanden. Die Klinik, die in verkehrsgünstiger Lage liegt, ist ein wichtiges Kreiskrankenhaus, das die Gesundheitsversorgung in der Peripherie von Barcelona abdeckt. Es hat 206 Betten und mehrere Fachabteilungen.

The project seeks to blur the limits between internal and external space and soften the margin of transition. It attempts to break this tension, establishing a continuity which architecture can work in without imposing limits. The proposal communicates with a hostile environment, creating an extensive green area so as to overcome the difficulties generated by a less than ideal site and noise pollution.The facility is situated in a strategic enclave, is regional in nature and takes in several municipalities, becoming, therefore a point of reference in the outskirts of Barcelona. It has 206 beds as well as specialized units capable of treating a large number of people.

Das Krankenhaus wirkt wie ein Abbild der Landschaft; horizontal und kompakt mit sauber getrennten, gestapelten Blöcken, die nur leicht von den Innenhöfe durchbrochen werden und ein einheitliches Ganzes bilden, das sie erwarteten Funktionen leisten kann.

Die von Weitem sichtbaren Blöcke des Krankenhauses bieten Platz für 400 Betten, die auf die Stationen für Geburtshilfe und Neugeborene, Pädiatrie, Psychiatrie und Intensivmedizin aufgeteilt sind. Es gibt ebenfalls eine Abteilung für die Insassen der nahegelegenen Strafanstalt.

Hospital in Cuenca The hospital appears as a referential image of the landscape, as a dense conjoined landscape element, horizontal, compact at its base, a stacked, clean mass , arranged as a sequence of patios, able to house all required functions in a single facility.The parts of the building which may be appreciated within the setting house wards which contain a total of 400 beds,divided into general wards, departments of obstetrics, pediatrics, new-born babies and psychiatry as well as secure wards and intensive care.

Krankenhaus in SalouSanierung und Erweiterung des Krankenhauses in Salou

Bei dem Projekt waren zwei Anforderungen zu erfüllen: zum einen musste der Anschluss an das bestehende Gebäude gelöst werden und zum anderen sollte sich die Erweiterung von dem bestehenden Gebäude abheben. Der Krankenhausbetrieb durfte durch den Bau des Anbaus nicht behindert werden.Das Gebäude stellt ein innovatives Modell im Gesundheitssektor dar, ein Übergang zwischen Zentrum für primärmedizinischen Betreuung und einem Krankenhaus. Besonders sehenswert ist die Abteilung für Bilddiagnostik, die ambulante Chirurgie und die Tagesklinik.

The project was conceived under two basic premises, on the one hand to resolve the issue of the connection between the existing building and the proposed extension such that the building would not lose its integrated character and on the other, to guarantee compatability between the carrying out of the work and the functioning of the center.The building represents an innovation in the health sector, a facility acting between a primary health center and a small hospital.The radiological area, the outpatient surgery area and the day hospital are of particular interest.

Fragmenting and minimizing the profile of the buiding served to reduce the impact of the construction on the territory and to resolve the relationship between the site and the topography.In this type of community housing, the parallelepipe block offers many eco-biological, rational and construction advantages: it allows a minimum footprint in the land; its insertion into the landscape is achieved without unacceptable size or aesthetic impact;,rational depth (13.5m); adequate sunlight and good ventilation.

Das Projekt strebt die Kombination aus geschäftiger Großstadt - bedingt durch die Lage an der Umgehungsstraße Ronda der Dalt - und den menschlicheren Dimensionen an, die durch die Lage an einer ruhigen Straße neben einem alten Kloster geschaffen werden.Die Umgehungsstraße wird durch den mächtigen Hauptblock dargestellt. Der Komplex wird von vielen kleinen Höfen durchbrochen, von denen einige unterirdisch liegen und die an die Patios und Eingänge zu den früheren Häusern in den Vororten von Barcelona erinnern.Die große Plattform aus begrünten Flächen nutzt den Höhenunterschied des Geländes aus und scheint optisch zu dem Kloster mit seinem Garten zu gehören.

Housing development in la Ronda de DaltMulti-family building for 30 residences

The project attempts to bring about a meeting between the scale of the city in terms of alignment with the expressway la ronda de Dalt and more human dimensions, in that access is through a side entrance off a quiet street opposite an old convent.The mass of the building is configured as a large principal block which takes on the character of the expressway it is aligned with. Within the stepped section of the building a series of spaces, some partly underground, some exterior, can be found which give form to the environmental aspect of the building and call to mind the small courtyards and entrances seen in old houses in the outlying districts of Barcelona.The large garden areas are favoured by an elevated position taking advantage of the difference in ground level while also affording a view of the convent and its own gardens.

Das Projekt besteht im Umbau einer bestehenden Immobilie in einem gehobenen Wohnviertel von Barcelona. Entworfen wurde ein aus zwei Gebäudeteilen bestehender Mehrfamilienkomplex mit EG und drei Etagen mit teilweise unter der Erdlinie liegenden Stockwerken. Der Zugang erfolgt über einen teilweise überdachten Platz, der Gemeinschaftsbereich ist und in den durch den Zwischenraum zwischen den beiden Gebäudeteilen Licht einfällt.Die Struktur des Gebäudes ist an der Fassade sichtbar und bildet einen Rahmen, der mit speziell für das Gebäude entworfene Keramik gefüllt wird.

Housing development in Calle Immaculada Multi-family building for16 residences

The project consists in the rehabilitation of a property in the elevated district of Barcelona. A multi-family residence is envisaged broken up into two masses, each PB+3 with shared below-ground floors. Access is through a semi-enclosed space with skylight situated in the area existing between the two building masses. The structure of the building can be appreciated in the facade: a framework bordering a ceramic piece designed for this building.

Das Projekt basiert auf der Erweiterung des bestehenden sanierten Altbaus durch Hinzufügung eines neuen Gebäudes. Es handelt sich um ein Seniorenpflegeheim mit 142 Plätzen, das aus drei Stockwerken und einem Untergeschoss besteht. Für das Projekt wurde ein Teil des bestehenden Gebäudes abgerissen, das andere, architektonisch interessantere Teil jedoch saniert. Hier sind die Behandlungs- , Betreuungs und die Gemeinschaftsbereiche des Pflegeheims untergebracht. Die L-Form des Gebäudes gestattet es, dass die meisten Zimmer nach Süden und zum Fluss ausgerichtet sind und die Bewohner dadurch von der schönen Umgebung genießen.

A project designed to enhance the renovated original construction through the addition of a new built space. The building is a facility designed as a residence for the elderly, with accommodation for 142 residents in three above-ground floors and one below ground. The project entails demolishing a part of the existing building while renovating the remainder, that of greater architectural interest, in order to house welfare and, supporting activities together with community areas of the residence.The ‘L’ shape of the building allows the southern orientation of the majority of the rooms as well as views to the river, thus taking full advantage of the privileged position the building enjoys.

Das Hotel Mandarin ist das Ergebnis eines komplexen architektonischen Prozesses, bei dem ein Gebäude aus der Zeit nach dem spanischen Bürgerkrieg zu einem Hotel der internationalen Luxushotelkette Mandarin Oriental umgestaltet wurde. Es liegt im Eixample-Viertel im Herzen Barcelonas, das im 19. Jahrhundert von dem Städteplaner Cerdà entworfen wurde.Der Zugang zu dem Gebäude wird als eine Verlängerung des Passeig de Gràcia verstanden, der sozusagen in der Lobby des Hotels weitergeht.Es wurde eine Längsachse entworfen, die im Passeig de Gràcia anfängt, durch das Eingangsportal über eine leicht ansteigende Rampe bis in die Mitte des Gebäudes führt. Hier befindet sich das Atrium, die Mezzanina, auf der sich der Zugang zum geschlossenen Teil des Hotels befindet und wo die Eingänge zu den verschiedenen Hotelbereichen liegen. Anschließend gelangt man in den Innenhof des Hotels mit einer begrünter Terrasse und einer ins Auge fallender Innenfassade.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel is the result of a complex architectural exercise designed to resolve issues posed by the establishing of a center with international prestige in a building dating from the Spanish post-war period situated in the heart of the Cerdá extension of Barcelona.The project design stems from an understanding of the building as a prolongation of the Paseo de Gracia which should allow the continuation of public space within its interior.A longitudinal axis is envisaged along which runs the following sequence: the Paseo de Gracia; the entrance porch; the access ramp which leads up to a central area of the building; the atrium; arrival at the ‘mezzanine’ floor, where the entrance to the non-public part of the hotel is found and from where access is gained to the various function and guest rooms; and finally the interior space of the block where the terrace-garden is located – an atmosphere strongly influenced by the building’s internal facade.

Cala Rajada ist ein Ort an der Nordostküste von Mallorca. Das neue Stadtviertel hat einen rechtwinkligen Straßenverlauf und besteht überwiegenden aus Wohngebäuden. Das neue Kulturzentrum steht im Herzen des neuen Stadtviertels auf einem von hundertjährigen Kiefern umgebenen freien Platz. Das Mikroklima des Ortes und die Lage am Mittelmeer waren Grundlage für den Vorschlag: es wurde ein Gebäude mit gebrochener Silhouette und einer unregelmäßigen Fassade, die gleichzeitig als Sonnenfilter dient, entworfen.

Cala Ratjada is a small seaside town located in the north-east of the island of Mallorca. It was set out as a rectangular extension and contains mainly residential buildings. The new Cultural Centre is situated in the heart of this new extension in an area where century-old pine trees give special character to the land.Both the microclimatic conditions of the zone and its Mediterranean nature inspired the proposal: a building with an irregular silhouette and a front facade whose recesses and indentations provide personality as well as a degree of shade.

In dieser von Autobahn nach Frankreich geprägten Umgebung sollte ein Bürogebäude entstehen. Da keine eigentlichen urbanen Räume geschaffen werden konnten, wurde beschlossen, einen Dialog zwischen dem Benutzern und der abwechslungsreichen Umgebung herzustellen. Es geht darum, die visuellen Wahrnehmungen zwischen dem Gebäudeinneren und der Außenwelt zu begreifen. Bei dem Entwurf werden statische und dynamische Elemente einander gegenübergestellt und die feste, objektive Struktur des Beton mit den sanften und subjektiven Metallsträngen kombiniert.Der kubische Quader und die schwerelose, sanfte Umhüllung schaffen eine deutliche Konstruktionsstrategie, die eine Vergabe der Bauarbeiten in aneinander anschließenden Teilabschnitten gestattet hat und bei der es keine Beeinträchtigungen zwischen Struktur und Außenfassade gab.


In a context marked by the strong presence of the motorway which links Girona and France, an office complex was to be erected. Given the impossibility of the building generating its own urban space, it was decided to establish a dialogue between the user and the dispersed, and diverse, surroundings. This is to do with understanding the visual appreciation between the interior of the building and its exterior. It is from this that construction considerations arise, thus the chosen option is based on the contraposition of the static and the dynamic, between the firm, objective structure of reinforced concrete and the soft, subjective metal curtain. Between the paralellipiped cubic construction and the ‘weightless and gentle’ encircling cloak, a clear constructive strategy is established which has allowed a bounded and linked transaction, free from any interference, between the structure and the exterior veil.

Das Projekt wurde wie eine Geometrie-Übung verstanden, die eng mit Morphologie der historischen Stadtanlage verbunden ist. Alle Flurstücke wurden als eine Einheit betrachtet und aus der daraus entstehenden Fläche wurde ein freier Raum auf der Höhe der Stadt und ein weiterer auf der Ebene der Seepromenade definiert. Diese Teilung gestattet die Unterbringung der städtischen Anlagen unter der Erdlinie durch Anpassung der Bauten an die Topographie.Der Vorschlag will freien Raum schaffen, Bereichen der Begegnung und Grünfläche vor Gebäuden den Vorrang geben, dem Raum zwischen den verschiedenen Aktivitäten mehr Bedeutung einräumen als den Bauten selbst: aus der Leere heraus ordnen, in umgekehrter Reihenfolge beginnen, von den Orten zur Begegnung.

Modification of the PGOU, Palma de Mallorca Eastside Seafront

The project has been interpreted as an exercise in geometric discipline, related to the morphology of the city’s historical street plan, on which some rules of occupancy have been established, all that with a regulated street layout energized by obliqueness.Considering all the parcels as a unit, a free space has been defined from the resulting area within the bounds of the city and another one at the level of the promenade. This section allows a public facilities program at a lower level adapting the building to the topography.The proposal tries to create “free space”, to prioritize the connection between spaces and green areas in front of the buildings, to focus on the gaps between different activities rather than between buildings; to begin arranging from emptiness and to start at the opposite end - from the meeting points.
