HYMNS OF THE DAY
Apolitikion of the Resurrection
Christ is risen form the dead; by death trampling down upon
death, and to those in the tombs, He has granted life.
Eisodikon of the Small Entrance
In the congregations bless God. The Lord, Who springs out of
Israel. Save us, O Son of God, Who rose from the dead, as
we sing to You, Alleluia.
Resurrection Apolytikion - Tone 3
Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord
has done a mighty deed with His arm; by death He has
trampled on death. The first born of the dead He has
become. From Hades depths He has delivered us; and
granted to the world His great mercy.
Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom)
Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the
fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit
down upon them and through them the universe You drew
unto Your net. O lover of mankind glory to You.
Kontakion - Tone 8
Even though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed
Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to
the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and granting peace to
Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen.

EPISTLE READING
EPISTLE READER..... COSTA BARGELIOTES
Priest: Let Us Attend…
Reader: Sing praises to our God, sing praises…clap your
hands, all you nations.
Priest: Wisdom…
Reader: The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 9:32-42
Priest: Let us be Attentive...
Reader: IN THOSE DAYS, as Peter went here and there
among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived
at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had
been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And
Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and
make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the
residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to
the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named
Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works
and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died;
and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper
room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing
that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him,
"Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went
with them. And when he had come, they took him to the
upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and
showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made
while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and
knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said,
"Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she
saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted
her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented
her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and
many believed in the Lord.

GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from The Gospel of John 5:1-15
At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in
Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called
Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a
multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for
the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went
down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the
water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the
water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man
was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When
Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a
long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put
me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I
am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to
him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once
the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and
walked. Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said
to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not
lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered
them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up
your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him, "Who is the man
who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now
the man who had been healed did not know who it was,
for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the
place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and
said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing
worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews
that it was Jesus who had healed him.

SHOES FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN project: Our Philoptohos is
spearheading a drive with the FOCUS group to get one new pair of
athletic shoes to homeless children registered in the Los Angeles
Unified School District, two times a year. There are 60,000 children
registered as ‘homeless’ in the Los Angeles schools, more than any
other city in the United States. They live in cars and they live on the
streets. Focus has put us in touch with a major shoe manufacturer that
will be donating all of the shoes. Our chapter is going to be
volunteering and working at the warehouse/storage facility sorting
shoes for the deliveries. We will be having more activities for this major
project throughout the year. If you are interested in helping and
joining in the work, you may call the church office and leave your
phone number for Judie Christopoulos. Thank you!
PENNIES AND PRAYERS: Our Pennies and Prayer’s collection is taking
place currently in the Sunday School Classrooms, as well as in the
coffee hour foyer at the ‘welcome’ table. Pennies ‘n Prayers is a
group developed by Metropolitan Gerasimos to start new mission
parishes and help them become self-sufficient. If you wish to donate,
please send a donation with your children to Sunday School or you
may leave it at the office marked for Philoptohos Pennies and Prayers.
Donations should be received before the end of May.
We look forward to another busy, hardworking and fun filled two
years. Philoptohos will continue to work with Father Bakas and Father
Boyd, the Parish Council and the Trustees to move ahead and have
our Cathedral continue being ‘the lighthouse on rocky shores” for
those who need us.
With love in Christ’s service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors

NIARA
Join us on June 1st, at the Wilson-Hanks Cultural Center to
attend the Greek Play NIARA by the Hippo-Theater Group. The
play is in the Greek language and it is an exciting modern storytelling
for children with a lot of influences from musical theater.
The performance will start at 12:30pm, followed by a drama
workshop.
Tickets will be available at the Gymansium entrance on June 1st
from 11:30am to 12:20pm.
Ticket price: $5 for children
Parents can accompany their children without a ticket.
Synopsis
Niara was not an ordinary cat. She thought of herself as a high-class
aristo-cat, but others thought she looked like just any other street cat.
Niara didn' t know anything about her past. While she is trying to
figure out what does her name mean, she decides to go on a trip of
self-awareness. Her journey is long, full of adventures, dangers and
surprises. In her travels she meets with the restless woodpecker Rin-
Run, the dull but wise dog Azortan and the agile, foxy cat master
Abcatoul. Will Niara manage to get back in her home in the far away
land of Portucat and will she find out the secret of her name? The
symbolic pass from an age of innocence to an age of adultness is
made with great effort and through many obstacles. Puzzles, unknown
languages, sneaky enemies and unexpected friends will finally help
Niara to understand every tiny piece of her seven souls in depth!!!

For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for
the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will
save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and
prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need
prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our
priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during
St Sophia Cathedral’s office hours.
As you request prayer, you may also wish to make an offering to
