Aufgabe II Leseverstehen II A True/ false/ not in the text: The Butler does it Step 1: Read the text. The butler does it ... and for peanuts Buckingham Palace announced last week that it would be recruiting a trainee butler. The announcement revealed that the candidates will be expected to work 45 hours a week for a salary of £15,000 a year – far below the London living wage of £8.30 per hour. The successful applicant will work at Buckingham Palace as well as Balmoral, Windsor and Sandringham. He or she will have to serve meals in the Royal Household, undertake messenger duties and bring the Royals their breakfast trays and newspapers. There's no real guide on what they're looking for, and much of the official job description is very unspecific. They need to "communicate confidently" and "work effectively and flexibly", the advert says. Also being advertised is the post of ‘linen keeper’ at Windsor Castle. The linen keeper must make sure that the correct sheets, towels and tablecloths are given to the Queen, her family and guests. Applicants must also be able to repair damaged linen, including fine tableware dating back to the 1900s. The live-in post carries a salary of £14,200 a year. Both men and women are entitled to apply for the jobs. Buckingham Palace is open to applications from EU nationals, although they must have a good command of English. 24-year-old butler-school graduate Ben Wyld from Eastbourne, currently first-class cabin crew at British Airways, wants the job. An energetic boy, he was so badly behaved at school, that he was banned from going to normal classes with his friends and finished his education at 16. But then he got the opportunity to learn the specialist skills of a butler at Jane Urquhart's butler school in London. He learned that he should call his boss his "principal", how to open a door properly and how to polish silver. "I'd love to get into a private family," he says, claiming that "a lot of people" use a job at Buckingham Palace as a "stepping stone" for better-paid jobs in private families. Getting into traditional families is difficult, but "if you're talking entry level, you're looking at £20,000-25,000, and for a butler you can pay between £30,000-60,000". Colin Gaunt, 43, now works as a private butler with a wealthy American family in London, but he's proud of the training he got at Buckingham Palace. A Middlesbrough boy, he tried for a job with the royals at just 17, and was accepted two years later. He said the payment for the lowest butler rank isn't as ridiculous as it seems. "When I was 19, it was £5,000," he said. "I felt like I'd won the lottery. You get your uniform, meals and accommodation. It's not as if you have to pay rent for a flat, or a mortgage and a car. You have the palace on your CV and that's very prestigious." Outside the palace walls, the butler's job is changing. "Some butlers do 12 hours, six days a week, and that's not unusual. You're like a one-man band," says Gaunt. "People want a butler and a valet and a cook in one person, so you do three people's jobs."

II B Multiple Choice: Teenage jobs Step 1: Read the text.

Should every teenager have done a 'proper job'? by Tom de Castella

The number of young people doing a Saturday job has halved in 15 years, according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. While internships are growing in popularity, fewer young people do Saturday jobs. But should everyone be expected to have done a "proper job" while they're young?

Having a part-time job as a teenager or student may not be glamorous. It may involve cleaning toilets, sexing chickens or operating the machine that puts jam into a doughnut. But it is a chance to get to know the world of work and take a crucial first step into adulthood.

I worked in a supermarket for nearly seven years filling shelves, stocking the warehouse and serving on the checkouts. On the shop floor, practical skills like "pulling forward" are vital. This is a job that had to be performed without fail over the last hour of each day. We had to pull all the products on all the shelves to the front, labels facing forwards.

My experience wasn't really a pleasant one. In fact I hated it because of how the management treated the shop-floor staff. Still, that was just my experience and I did see how shelf-stacking can provide a useful path for many people - students, mothers with growing children, ambitious graduates keen to become managers, for example. I think that a person who has never struggled with grimy, physical or monotonous labour has somehow missed out. It goes beyond career development, to the idea of shaping one’s personality.

But does that kind of job really help you with your career? Dr Paul Sissons, senior researcher at the Work Foundation, argues that the best foundation for career success is getting good grades. "Formal qualifications are still most important." The other thing sought by employers is work experience in areas where you want to specialise. The message seems to be: ‘Study hard and get a good internship’. But unpaid internships are often only affordable to those from wealthy families.

Tyler Brule, editor in chief of the magazine Monocle, says that students on summer holidays should take real jobs rather than internships. “Everyone needs to have experienced what it's like to stock shelves, scoop ice cream, wait tables or scrub floors. It’s a problem with the younger generation. They're not recognising a hierarchy. Or understanding that no means no, that the discussion is over and that it's time to get back to work."

These experiences often build camaraderie between people who have little in common. Earning your own money is a step towards financial independence. There are valuable lessons about deadlines, punctuality, and not snitching on colleagues. Sometimes it's about dealing with boredom. At others, it's about coping with annoying colleagues. These experiences can be precious in later life.

Being a shelf-stacker certainly teaches you to deal with those higher up the management chain who look down on you - which, when you're a shelf stacker, is everyone. And someone who has worked as a waiter is more likely to be a respectful customer. The trouble is that not everyone who does this kind of work will move on to other things. The sad reality is that some people will be doing these jobs all their lives.

Step 2: Tick ( ) the correct statement (a, b, c or d). Only one answer is right. There is an example (0).

0. Official numbers reveal

that a only teenagers do Saturday jobs.

b there are now less young people with Saturday jobs.

c Saturday jobs are more popular than internships.

d only half of the 15-year-olds work on Saturdays.

the author a
