Representations of Numbers

A good knowledge of different representations of numbers helps to realize the properties of our decimal system. Furthermore, it enables future teachers to understand children's problems that occur when numbers and arithmetical notions are introduced. The lecture will discuss several different approaches.

In der Lehrveranstaltung erfolgt eine vertiefende Behandlung zahlentheoretischer Begriffe und Zusammenhänge, die im Schulstoff eine wesentliche Rolle spielen :Eigenschaften der Teilerrelation, Division mit Rest, wichtige Aussagen über Primzahlen und die Primfaktorzerlegung natürlicher Zahlen, Rechnen mit Kongruenzen und Restklassen, Teilbarkeitsregeln, Prüfziffern und diophantische Gleichungen.

Divisibility, prime numbers and congruence classes

This lecture covers topics of number theory which are essential for teaching at school. There is emphasis on a deeper understanding of concepts and interrelations. Topics included: characteristics of the divisor relation, division with remainder, important propositions about prime numbers and prime factorization of natural numbers, modular arithmetic and congruence classes, divisibility rules, check digits and diophantine equations.

Aussagen, Mengen und Relationen gehören zu den wichtigsten mathematischen Grundbegriffen. Einerseits erlauben sie elementare Zugänge, die auch die Grundschulmathematik berühren. Andererseits führt der Versuch einer exakten Definition zunächst auf logische Probleme, auf die die Lehrveranstaltung auch eingeht.


Statements, Sets, Relations (MAT 1613)

Statements, sets and relations are basic concepts of mathematics. They can be introduced in a very elementary way which is relevant to primary school. On the other hand it is difficult to avoid contradictions which arise if you try to explain these notions exactly. Both will be topics of this seminar.
