1562 genannt. Am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bestand der
Magistrat aus Stadtrichter, Stadtkämmerer, dem Rat mit
zehn Mitgliedern und dem Stadtschreiber.
1673 sind die Gewerbe der Weber, Färber, Schmiede, Schlosser,
Lederer, Sattler, Tischler, Wagner, Glaser, Schneider, Huterer,
Kürschner, Schuster, Bäcker, Fleischhacker, Bader und Barbiere
bezeugt.

membri e segretario. Nel 1673 si attesta la presenza dei segu-
enti mestieri: tessitore, tintore, fabbro, conciatore, sellaio, faleg-
name, carraio, vetraio, sarto, cappellaio, pellicciaio, ciabattino,
panettiere, macellaio, chirurgo e barbiere.
anagrafico [3-5] (registri parrocchiali relativi a nascite, matrimoni e

The town of Strassburg in the modern era
The regular form of the main square and church square
correspond to the regular building blocks of the 2-storey homes
of the 15th to 16th century, separated by a few narrow alley-
ways. An index of houses [1] along with all their inhabitants was
compiled in 1758. From the 16th century, the population began
to elect a town magistrate on an annual basis following the
appointment of the magistrate by the bishop. The town statutes
of 1565 enacted by Bishop Urban Sagstetter comprise 29
articles and were last approved and extended in 1758. A mayor
was first named in 1562. At the end of the 18th century, the
municipal authorities comprised a town magistrate, town
treasurer, a council of 10 members and the town clerk.
In 1673, the trades of the weaver, dyer, smith, metal worker,
tanner, saddler, carpenter, wagon-maker, glass-maker, hat-
maker, furrier, cobbler, baker, butcher and barber were docu-
mented. In 1758, the appointment of a town pastoralist and pig
farmer was anchored in the town statutes [2] established by the
Bishop of Thun. Farmers formed the majority of the population
until at least the second half of the 18th century. The town
priest of Strassburg [6] was responsible for managing the popu-
lation registers [3-5] (births, deaths and marriages). A civil guard
was documented for the first time in 1688. A doctor was named
in 1561 and in 1724/25, a pharmacist was documented at the
Strassburg.
