Church Etiquette

When attending Divine Services we will have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time The church is the house of God Reverence and good manners are required at all times Not irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about or entering the church or being seated at a pew Wherever a person happens to be at these moments he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated These times are bull During the Doxology when the priest is censing bull During the small Entrance - the procession of the priest and Altar servers with the Holy Gospelbull When the priest cense the Altar icons and congregation throughout the Servicebull During the reading of the Epistle and Gospelbull During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and the Altar servers with the Holy Giftsbull During the recitation of the Creed of Faith and the Lordrsquos Prayer (Our Father)bull During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts (Se Imnoumen Hymn)bull During Holy CommunionWhen receiving any Sacrament of the church use your baptismalchrimation name During any special services such as Memorials or Blessing or the Loaves special Doxologies etc The General rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or giving a blessing there should be no movement in the church Also we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of Divine Worship from the beginning

Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε τη σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα Δεν πρέπει γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται ή να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία ή να κάθεται Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος αυτές τις στιγμές πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει Αυτές οι στιγμές είναιbull Στην Δοξολογία όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει bull Στην Μικρή Είσοδο στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα bull Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό τις εικόνες και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θειας Λειτουργίας bull Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίουbull Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο στην διάρκεια της πομπής τον Άγιων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα bull Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Υμών)bull Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) των Άγιων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν)bull Στην Θεία Κοινωνία Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες σαν τα μνημόσυνα τις αρτοκλασίες ειδικές δοξολογίες κτλ Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία δεν γίνεται κίνηση στον ναό Επίσης θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή Μην ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μας βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας

Beloved in the Lord

Our Lord Jesus Christ personally chose and called His Twelve Disciples at the beginning of His three-year public ministry with the invitation to ldquoFollow Merdquo As His Disciples showed their immediate willingness to do so they increasingly became eyewitnesses to His preaching teachings healings and wondrous signs During our Lordrsquos Passion after washing His Disciplesrsquo feet and breaking bread with them ndash and when Judas had left to betray Him ndash He promised that He would not leave them desolate ldquoThe Counsellor the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My Name He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to yourdquoOn the Sunday of Pentecost Christrsquos promise was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit was distributed and rested upon the heads of each of them (including Matthias the Disciple who was chosen by lot to replace Judas) From that point on they became known as ldquothe Apostlesrdquo ndash literally the ones who were sent by God to ldquogo forthrdquo and fulfill His Great Commission to ldquomake disciples of all nationsrdquo

Empowered by the Life-creating Spirit the Apostles traveled to countless places preaching the ldquogood newsrdquo of the Resurrected Christ challenging people to repent of their sins baptizing in the Name of the Holy Trinity those who embraced their Christian teachings establishing His Church wherever they went living in poverty even though they were the leaders and ldquofirst bishopsrdquo of the Church suffering persecution everywhere they traveled and ndash despite their suffering ndash increasing the number of believers day by day until they gave up their spirits St Paul who together with St Peter was considered chief among the Apostles offered this powerful job description of what it meant (and should still mean) to be a servant-leader of Christrsquos Church ldquoWhen reviled we bless when persecuted we endure when slandered we try to conciliate we have become and are now as the refuse of the worldI urge you then be imitators of merdquo

For a few days in June the Orthodox Church will be in a period of fasting honouring the work ministry and lives of the Holy Apostles Perhaps the lesser known of fasting seasons the Apostlesrsquo Fast commences the Monday after the Sunday of All Saints ndash one week after Pentecost ndash and ends on June 28 inclusive the day before the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul This fasting period can be anywhere from a few days to an entire month While our Church Calendar provides a guideline for the physical fast the Apostlesrsquo Fast is unique in that it does not have special worshiping services designed specifically for the season (as with Lent and the Dormition Fast) and moreover does not have any restrictions regarding the celebration of Sacraments Weddings are permitted during this fasting period and in fact are commonplace during the month of June

As the Ancient Apostolic Orthodox Church established this fasting period to honour the Holy Apostles it is spiritually prudent for us to approach it with a desire and effort that strives to emulate the lives of these champions of the Faith May we use this fast as a time to pray more to know Christ more by reading daily from the Holy Gospel and to study the lives of the Apostles Letrsquos discern our God-given spiritual gifts and utilize them in the service of others and for the good of His Church and to live more modestly show compassion especially toward those who are sick and suffering Letrsquos endure with more faith our personal struggles and repent daily Let us boldly and humbly speak the truth of Christ and be willing and active participants in the growth of His Church Finally let us love in all circumstances thus becoming imitators of Godrsquos Holy Apostles

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ Ο Κύριος μας προσωπικά επέλεξε και κάλεσε τους Δώδεκα Μαθητές στην αρχή της διακονίας Του με την πρόσκληση laquoΑκολούθησε μεraquo Καθώς οι μαθητές έδειξαν την άμεση προθυμία τους έγιναν όλο και περισσότερο μάρτυρες στο κήρυγμα τις διδασκαλίες τις θεραπείες και τα θαύματα του Χριστού Κατά τη διάρκεια του Πάθους του Κυρίου μας αφού έπλυνε τα πόδια των Μαθητών Του και έφαγε ψωμί μαζί τους - και όταν ο Ιούδας έφυγε για να τον προδώσει - υποσχέθηκε ότι δεν θα τους άφηνε μόνους laquoΟ Παράκλητος το Άγιο Πνεύμα Τον Οποίο ο Πατέρας θα στείλει στο Όνομα Μου θα σας διδάξει όλα τα πράγματα και θα σας θυμίσει όλα όσα σας έχω πειraquo Την Κυριακή της Πεντηκοστής η υπόσχεση του Χριστού εκπληρώθηκε όταν το Άγιο Πνεύμα κατέβηκε στα κεφάλια του καθενός από αυτών (συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Ματθία του Μαθητή που επιλέχθηκε για να αντικαταστήσει τον Ιούδα) Από εκείνη τη στιγμή έγιναν γνωστοί ως laquoοι Απόστολοιraquo - κυριολεκτικά αυτοί που στάλθηκαν από τον Θεό για να laquoβγουνraquo και να εκπληρώσουν τη Μεγάλη Του εντολή να laquoκάνουν μαθητές όλα τα έθνηraquo

Με την δύναμη του ζωοποιού Αγίου Πνεύματος οι Απόστολοι ταξίδεψαν σε αμέτρητα μέρη κηρύσσοντας τα laquoκαλά νέαraquo του Αναστημένου Χριστού προκαλώντας τους ανθρώπους να μετανοήσουν για τις αμαρτίες τους και βαφτίζοντας στο Όνομα της Αγίας Τριάδας όσους δέχτηκαν τις χριστιανικές διδασκαλίες τους ιδρύοντας την Εκκλησία του Χριστού όπου κι αν πήγαιναν ζούσαν σε φτώχεια παρόλο που ήταν οι αρχηγοί και οι laquoπρώτοι επίσκοποιraquo της Εκκλησίας υπέφεραν διωγμούς παντού που ταξίδεψαν και - παρά τα δεινά τους - αυξάνοντας τον αριθμό των πιστών μέρα με τη μέρα μέχρι τον θάνατο τους Ο Άγιος Παύλος ο οποίος μαζί με τον Άγιο Πέτρο θεωρήθηκε πρώτος μεταξύ των Αποστόλων προσέφερε αυτήν την ισχυρή περιγραφή για το τι σήμαινε (και θα έπρεπε ακόμη να σημαίνει) να είναι υπηρέτης-ηγέτης της Εκκλησίας του Χριστού όταν μας διώκουν υπομένουμε Όταν μας συκοφαντούν προσπαθούμε να συμφιλιωθούμε Έχουμε γίνει και είμαστε τώρα ως τα απορρίμματα του κόσμουhellipσας παροτρύνω λοιπόν να μιμηθείτε εμένα

Για λίγες μέρες τον Ιούνιο η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία θα βρίσκεται σε περίοδο νηστείας Τιμά το έργο τη διακονία και τη ζωή των Αγίων Αποστόλων Ίσως η λιγότερο γνωστή για εμάς νηστείας η νηστεία των Αποστόλων ξεκινά τη Δευτέρα μετά την Κυριακή των Αγίων Πάντων - μία εβδομάδα μετά την Πεντηκοστή - και τελειώνει στις 28 Ιουνίου συμπεριλαμβανομένης της ημέρας πριν από τη Γιορτή των Αγίων Πέτρου και Παύλου Αυτή η περίοδος νηστείας μπορεί να κρατήσει από μερικές ημέρες έως έναν ολόκληρο μήνα Ενώ το Ημερολόγιο της Εκκλησίας μας παρέχει μια οδηγία για τη φυσική νηστεία η νηστεία των Αποστόλων είναι μοναδική στο ότι δεν διαθέτει ειδικές Λειτουργίες και ακολουθίες που έχουν σχεδιαστεί ειδικά για τη περίοδο αυτή (όπως με τη Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή και την Κοίμηση) και επιπλέον δεν έχει περιορισμούς σχετικά με τον εορτασμό των Μυστηρίων Οι γάμοι επιτρέπονται κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου νηστείας και στην πραγματικότητα είναι συνηθισμένοι κατά τη διάρκεια του Ιουνίου

Καθώς η Αρχαία Αποστολική Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία καθιέρωσε αυτήν την περίοδο νηστείας για να τιμήσει τους Αγίους Αποστόλους είναι πνευματικά συνετό να τη προσεγγίσουμε με μια επιθυμία και προσπάθεια να μιμηθούμε τις ζωές αυτών των πρωταθλητών της Πίστης Ας χρησιμοποιήσουμε αυτή τη νηστεία ως μια ευκαιρία να προσευχηθούμε περισσότερο να γνωρίσουμε τον Χριστό περισσότερο διαβάζοντας καθημερινά από το Ιερό Ευαγγέλιο και μελετώντας τις ζωές των Αποστόλων Ας διακρίνουμε τα δικά μας πνευματικά δώρα και τα χρησιμοποιήσουμε για την εξυπηρέτηση του πλησίον μας και για το καλό της Εκκλησίας Του Χριστού και για να ζήσουμε πιο μετριοπαθή ζωή δείχνοντας συμπόνια ειδικά προς εκείνους που είναι άρρωστοι και υποφέρουν Ας υπομείνουμε με περισσότερη πίστη τους προσωπικούς μας αγώνες και ας μετανοήσουμε καθημερινά Ας μιλήσουμε τολμηρά και ταπεινά την αλήθεια του Χριστού και ας είμαστε πρόθυμοι και ας συμμετέχουμε ενεργά στην ανάπτυξη της Εκκλησίας Του Τέλος ας αγαπήσουμε σε όλες τις περιστάσεις και ας γίνουμε μιμητές των Αγίων Αποστόλων του Θεού

Communion Is How We Stoke the Fire

And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them who said ldquoThe Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simonrdquo Then they told what had happened on the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread Luke 24 33-35 (Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Pascha)

Wersquove all sat around a campfire In my experience of campfires it seems to take a lot of effort to get them going a little effort to keep them going and even less effort to put them out Itrsquos true in dry and parched terrain it only takes a spark to start a forest fire But thatrsquos not how it works with a campfire It takes some work to put together small kindling like newspapers and pine needles and once those are set aflame you have to keep the fire going until the larger pieces of wood catch fire and your campfire lights Once you have a good-sized fire going throwing on another log is all the work you have to do However not throwing on new wood will allow the flames to go out in a short amount of time When the fire is about to go out what it needs is the addition of another log When the spiritual light is about to go out what it needs is the addition of Christ And the best way we add Christ to our lives is through Holy Communion He is ldquomade known to us in the breaking of the breadrdquo Looking back at the journey to Emmaus the disciples were at first sad because Jesus had died Then they were confused by the message that the unidentified man they were walking with was saying That man was Christ but they didnrsquot recognize Him They couldnrsquot quite understand what He was saying to them But their hearts were burning and they wanted to know more So they invited Him to stay with them and when He came and sat with them and ldquobroke the breadrdquo in the same way He did at the Last Supper all their doubts disappeared and they knew He was the Risen Christ This truth came to them in the breaking of the bread in the Holy Eucharist As St Paul tells us in I Corinthians 1126 ldquoFor as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup you proclaim the Lordrsquos death until He comesrdquo The Eucharist is the log that stokes the fire which burns in our hearts Going back to the Emmaus experience the spark that got the fire going was the interest of Luke and Cleopas in engaging in the conversation Their interest got their hearts to burn The breaking of the bread is what set them on fire The spark needed to get us going is interest But that is not enough to keep the light going We need the Eucharist to set our hearts aflame and to prevent the fire from going out And we need the Eucharist regularly Remember the campfiremdashyou have to throw a new log every 30 minutes or so or the fire burns out But throw a log on every 30 minutes and the flame stays ablaze Once the fire is going the regular maintenance by throwing logs keeps the confidence high that the fire will continue to burn providing light and warmth In our spiritual lives we need the Eucharist frequently so that the Light of Christ stays ablaze in our hearts and so that we have confidence that His Light will continue to burn in us providing Light and warmth in our hearts and souls Our liturgical tradition of lighting a candle at the Resurrection service illustrates this point We use a small flame from a single candle to ignite our hearts again with the warmth of Christ The Light of Christ is enough to get our hearts to burn within us once again We keep that fire going through the Holy Eucharist for He is continually known to us in the ldquoBreaking of the Breadrdquo The Communion Hymn of the Paschal season presents the Eucharist as a spring that quenches a thirsty soul So whether we see the Eucharist as a fire to warm the heart or spring to satisfy the thirsty soul what is most significant is that the Eucharist is the gift that grows and sustains the faith that strengthens the heart and soul for the journey to everlasting life ldquoReceive the Body of Christ and taste of the Immortal Spring Alleluiardquo (Communion Hymn of the Paschal Season) Make sure your plans for your Sundays once our churches open up again include ldquoBreaking breadrdquo with Christ in the Eucharist

Όλοι έχουμε καθίσει γύρω από μια φωτιά Σύμφωνα με την εμπειρία μου από τις φωτιές φαίνεται να χρειάζεται πολλή προσπάθεια για να τις ξεκινήσεις λίγη προσπάθεια για να τις συνεχίσεις και ακόμη λιγότερη προσπάθεια για να τις σβήσεις Είναι αλήθεια ξηρό έδαφος χρειάζεται μόνο μια σπίθα για να ξεκινήσει μια δασική πυρκαγιά Αλλά δεν λειτουργεί έτσι με ένα τζάκι η φωτιά κατασκήνωσης Χρειάζεται λίγη δουλειά για να συγκεντρωθούν μικρά καύσιμα όπως εφημερίδες και βελόνες πεύκου και όταν αυτά πιάσουν πρέπει να συνεχίσει η φωτιά μέχρι να πιάσουν τα μεγαλύτερα κομμάτια ξύλου και να ανάψει η φωτιά Μόλις ξεκινήσει μια καλή φωτιά ρίχνοντας περισσότερα ξύλα είναι όλη η δουλειά χρειάζεται Ωστόσο χωρίς ξύλα οι φλόγες θα σβήσουν σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα Όταν η φωτιά πρόκειται να σβήσει αυτό που χρειάζεται είναι ένα καινούριο κούτσουρο Όταν το πνευματικό φως πρόκειται να σβήσει αυτό που χρειάζεται είναι η προσθήκη του Χριστού Και ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να προσθέσουμε τον Χριστό στη ζωή μας είναι μέσω της Θείας Κοινωνίας Γνωρίζουμε τον Χριστο μέσω laquoτης κλάσεως του άρτουraquo Μελετώντας το ταξίδι στην Εμμαούς οι μαθητές ήταν στην αρχή λυπημένοι επειδή ο Ιησούς είχε πεθάνει Μπερδεύτηκαν από αυτά που τους έλεγε ο άγνωστος άνθρωπος με τον οποίο περπατούσαν Αυτός ο άνθρωπος ήταν ο Χριστός αλλά δεν Τον αναγνώρισαν Δεν μπορούσαν να καταλάβουν τι τους είπε Αλλά οι καρδιές τους έκαιγαν και ήθελαν να μάθουν περισσότερα Έτσι Τον προσκάλεσαν να μείνει μαζί τους και όταν ήρθε και κάθισε μαζί τους και μοίρασε το ψωμί με τον ίδιο τρόπο που έκανε στο Μυστικό Δείπνο όλες οι αμφιβολίες τους εξαφανίστηκαν και ήξεραν ότι ήταν ο Αναστημένος Χριστός Αυτή η αλήθεια τους ήρθε στο μοίρασμα του άρτου στην Αγία Ευχαριστία Όπως μας λέει ο Άγιος Παύλος στην Α΄ Κορινθίους 1126 γιατί όσο συχνά τρώτε αυτό το ψωμί και πίνετε από το κύπελλο δηλώνετε το θάνατο του Κυρίου μέχρι να επιστρέψει Η Ευχαριστία είναι το ξύλο που τροφοδοτεί τη φωτιά που καίει στις καρδιές μας Επιστρέφοντας στην εμπειρία των μαθητών ταξιδεύοντας προς την Εμμαούς η σπίθα που έκανε τη φωτιά ήταν το ενδιαφέρον του Λουκά και του Κλεόπα να συμμετάσχουν στη συνομιλία με τον Χριστό Το ενδιαφέρον τους έκαιγε τις καρδιές τους Το μοίρασμα του άρτου είναι αυτό που τις άναψε φωτιά Η σπίθα που απαιτείται για να μας κάνει να πάμε προς τον Χριστό είναι το ενδιαφέρον Αλλά αυτό δεν είναι αρκετό για να συνεχίσει το φως Χρειαζόμαστε την Θεία Κοινωνία να βάλουμε στις καρδιές μα φωτιά για να μη σβήσει Και χρειαζόμαστε τακτικά την Ευχαριστία Θυμηθείτε την φωτιά - πρέπει να βάζουμε ένα νέο κούτσουρο κάθε 30 λεπτά περίπου διαφορετικά η φωτιά σβήνει Αλλά ρίξτε ένα ξύλο κάθε 30 λεπτά και η φλόγα παραμένει αναμμένη Μόλις η φωτιά πιάσει η τακτική συντήρηση ρίχνοντας ξύλα διατηρεί την φωτιά παρέχοντας φως και ζεστασιά Στις πνευματικές μας ζωές χρειαζόμαστε συχνά την Ευχαριστία έτσι ώστε το Φως του Χριστού να παραμένει φλεγόμενο στις καρδιές μας και έτσι ώστε να έχουμε εμπιστοσύνη ότι το Φως Του θα συνεχίσει να καίει μέσα μας δίνοντας Φως και ζεστασιά στις καρδιές και τις ψυχές μας Η λειτουργική μας παράδοση να ανάβουμε ένα κερί στην ακολουθία της Ανάστασης απεικονίζει αυτό το σημείο Χρησιμοποιούμε μια μικρή φλόγα από ένα κερί για να αναφλέξουμε ξανά τις καρδιές μας με τη ζεστασιά του Χριστού Το Φως του Χριστού είναι αρκετό για να κάνει τις καρδιές μας να κάψουν ξανά μέσα μας Κρατάμε αυτή τη φωτιά μέσω της Θείας Κοινωνίας γιατί ο Χριστός γίνεται συνεχώς γνωστός σε μας στη laquoΚλάση του Άρτουraquo Ο Ύμνος στην Θεία Κοινωνία στην περίοδο του Πάσχα παρουσιάζει την Θεία Ευχαριστία ως πηγή που ποτίζει μια διψασμένη ψυχή Έτσι είτε βλέπουμε την Ευχαριστία ως φωτιά για να ζεσταθεί η καρδιά ή ως πηγάδι για να ποτίσουμε τη διψασμένη ψυχή αυτό που είναι πιο σημαντικό είναι ότι η Ευχαριστία είναι το δώρο που μεγαλώνει και στηρίζει την πίστη μας καθώς η πίστη μας ενισχύει την καρδιά και την ψυχή για το ταξίδι στην αιώνια ζωή laquoΛάβετε το Σώμα του Χριστού Και γεύσασθε της Αθάνατης Πηγής Αλληλουια raquo(Ύμνος Κοινωνίας της εποχής του Πάσχα) Σιγουρευτείτε ότι τα σχέδια σας για τις Κυριακές σας μόλις ανοίξουν ξανά οι εκκλησίες μας συμπεριλαμβάνουν το laquoμοίρασμα του Άρτουraquo με τον Χριστό στην Θεία Κοινωνία

Also we encourage you to visit the church and Fr Kosta with your children on days when there is no service so you can explain to them a few things about the church The children will also get a different appreciation of the church when they have it all to themselves

Q What does ldquoGreek Orthodoxrdquo mean The term Greek Orthodox may refer either to the Orthodox Church as a whole or to the churches of the Eastern Roman Empire or ldquoByzantine areas Greek Orthodox also refers to the style of liturgical rite used in the Church In the western world Greek Orthodox mainly refers to Orthodox Christians of Greek descent However non-Orthodox people sometimes apply the term to all Orthodox Christians without regard to ethnicity much as the term Roman Catholic is used to refer to all those who belong to the Roman Catholic Church despite not being of Italian ancestry

Q What language are your services in Our Divine Liturgy is done in English and Greek with most of the prayers done in English while the hymns which are chanted by the cantors are usually balanced between Greek and English Vespers and Matins (Orthros) are chanted in both Greek and English The sermon is given in English and sometimes in Greek as well

Q Do I have to be Greek or Orthodox to attend services You do not have to be Greek or Orthodox to attend services Everyone is welcome to attend and inquire about our theology and liturgical practices In fact we often have visitors in our church Please note that you need to be baptized Orthodox in good standing to receive the Sacraments Being Greek does not automatically make you Orthodox or vice versa Our priest is available if you have any questions regarding your attendance at our church Please feel free to contact him via text or email a couple of days before you visit and hersquoll answer any questions you have

Είναι ο Χριστός το Ευαγγέλιο Του η ζωή που μας έχει δώσει μέσω του έργου Του στη γη η καθημερινή μας ζωή Είναι μόνο για τις μέρες που έχουμε θέσει για αυτόν Τις Κυριακές και τις γιορτές στην καλύτερη περίπτωση Για τις ημέρες και τους χρόνους που επιλέξαμε οι ίδιοι Ο Χριστός μπήκε στην καθημερινή μας ζωή για να μας δώσει αληθινό νόημα αληθινή ζωή Τώρα είτε παίρνουμε μέρος σε αυτήν τη ζωή είτε όχι Η είστε στο δρόμο η δεν είστε Ο Χριστός κάλεσε και συνεχίζει να καλεί τον καθένα μας να πάρει μια στάση όσον αφορά την πίστη σε ΑυτόνΣτην ιδεολογική κοινωνική πολιτικο-υπαρξιακή σύγχυση και παρακμή που υπομένουμε η Εκκλησία καλεί και προκαλεί κάθε καλά διατεθειμένο άτομο να έρθει στην αληθινή ζωή χωρίς όρους και να συμμετάσχει στην κοινωνία των ψυχών που ονομάζουμε Εκκλησία Εκεί θα γνωρίσουν θα βιώσουν τη μόνιμη παρουσία του Κυρίου στη ζωή της Εκκλησίας και θα συνειδητοποιήσουν τι σημαίνει να είσαι ενωμένος με τον Χριστό και άλλους ανθρώπουςΘα ήθελα να κλείσω με τον ύμνο που τραγουδά στην Προηγιασμένη Θεία Λειτουργία λίγο πριν πάμε για κοινωνία laquoΓευτείτε και δείτε ότι ο Κύριος είναι καλόςraquo δηλαδή ωφέλιμος ελεήμωνΑυτή η ευκαιρία μας δίνεται από την Εκκλησία η οποία εγκαινιάζει την παρουσία της στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία και πραγματικότητα με τα γεγονότα της Πεντηκοστής Οι άνθρωποι που τολμούν να πλησιάσουν τον Κύριο γνωρίζουν αυτήν τη νέα ζωή που μόνο Αυτός προσφέρει σε όλους μας

Τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον φῶς καὶ ζωή καὶ ζῶσα πηγὴ νοερά Πνεῦμα σοφίας Πνεῦμα συνέσεως ἀγαθόν εὐθές νοερόν ἡγεμονεῦον καθαῖρον τὰ πταίσματα Θεὸς καὶ θεοποιοῦν πῦρ ἐκ πυρὸς προϊόν λαλοῦν ἐνεργοῦν διαιροῦν τὰ χαρίσματαmiddot δι οὗ Προφῆται ἅπαντες καὶ Θεοῦ Ἀπόστολοι μετὰ Μαρτύρων ἐστέφθησαν Ξένον ἄκουσμα ξένον θέαμα πῦρ διαιρούμενον εἰς νομὰς χαρισμάτων

The Lauds of Pentecost

Today all the nations in the city of David saw paradoxical things when the Holy Spirit descended in fiery tongues according to the utterance of Luke the theologian For he said when the Disciples of Christ were gathered together a sound came like the rush of a mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting And they all began to speak with strange words strange dogmas strange teachings of the Holy Trinity


The Holy Spirit forever was and is and will be never beginning never ending but forever ranked and numbered with the Father and the Son He is life and life-giving light and giver of light goodness itself and the source of goodness through whom the Father is known and the Son is glorified and by all is known the one power one order one worship of the Holy Trinity

The Holy Spirit is light and life and a living noetic fount Spirit of wisdom Spirit of understanding good upright noetic ruling purging offences God and deifying He is fire issuing from fire uttering inciting distributing the gifts of grace Through Him the Prophets and the Apostles of God and the Martyrs all were crowned Strange to hear strange to see fire distributed for the apportioning of gifts

COME AND SEE

In the Gospel of John we read about the calling of the discipleshellip ldquoPhillip found Nathaniel and said to him we have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets did write Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph And Nathaniel said to him can any good thing come out of Nazareth Phillip said to him come and seerdquo (John 145-46)Each of us is also called to come and see the One who brings us peace and understanding The One who came to be our great example in life

See the world as Godrsquos gift to you Come and see Godrsquos many blessings in your life What is your response to His gifts In gratitude and thanksgiving you offer your time talents and treasure in proportion to what you have been givenGregory the Theologian writes ldquoyou will never overcome Godrsquos generosity even if you give away all that you havehellip And however much you bring to Him always more remains Nor will you give anything that is your own for all things from from Godrdquo

See what the Church can become not just maintaining current programs but doing the ministries made possible by your support In the early Church each person coming to the gathering of the Church brought everything they could spare for the needs of the Church They provided for the sustenance of the clergy widows and orphans for helping the poor and for all the good works of the Church This is the Church that we as Orthodox Christians claim to be How much can your offering do for Christ Only as much as you empower it to do It depends on your love because we give to Christ and His Church not according to our means but according to our love for Him We are called to love God with our entire being - our time talents and treasury

See God work through you to serve His Church and those who seek His TruthRemember the Samaritan woman at the well After meeting Jesushellip ldquothe woman then left her water pot and went her way into the city and said to the men come see a man who told me all the things I ever did could this be the Christ Then they went out of the city and came to himrdquo (John 4)God will place you in situations to share your faith As He called upon His disciples on the day of His Ascension He has also called upon you to be His witnesshelliprdquoin Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earthrdquo In the Gospel we read of people coming to see Jesus There were four men who also brought their friend a paralyzed man to be healed When they found the place so crowded that they couldnrsquot get close these friends removed part of the roof and lowered their friend down on a stretcher and laid him at Jesusrsquo feet We also begin by bringing ourselves to Christ But it doesnrsquot stop there After we have brought ourselves we bring others The greatest gift we can give to another person is Christ and the ministries of the Church provide the opportunity to do so But these ministries require your support We are able to fulfil Godrsquos mission for the Church only to the extent that we support it We do this by our physical spiritual and financial support Did you know that there are some 500 references in the Bible about prayer There are also some 2300 references in the Bible about offering assistance to the Church to assist in transforming people

Come and see This phrase is simple yet powerful It calls us to change our location - physically and spiritual If we want to find Christ we must move toward Him We must grow and mature in our faith Giving to the Church is an opportunity - an opportunity to examine our priorities and values It is an opportunity to express our thankfulness to give from ourselves and to grow in grace It is an opportunity to participate in the work of God Come and see what we can do together with your support A cheque mailed to the church or a membership fee is accompanied by our presence by our willingness to serve by our prayers and our commitment Giving is not a substitute for our commitment - it is an expression of it Come and see how you can grow through service to the Church

Pentecost What Do We Ask With the Three Prayers in the Kneeling Vespers By Archpriest Stylianos Ananiadis

The kneeling service This is how Pentecost this great and official day of our church is known to most people This is because in the Vespers of the Feast Day of the Holy Spirit which are sung right after the Divine Liturgy of Sunday the priest calls all of us from the Royal Gate to kneel and pray to the Holy Trinity In other words to pray on our knees to our Trinitarian God The priest then reads three prayers according to the teaching of the Church regarding the Holy Trinity But what do we ask with these three kneeling prayers If wersquod like to give in simple words a short summary of these prayers wersquod say the following First we confess before God that we are sinful people and we are in need of the mercy of God that is His compassion and love We say to him with honesty and contriteness that we have sinned and ask Him not to scorn us To not remember the sins we have committed known and unknown whether in our youth whether out of ignorance and even up to now We also ask Him to protect us in our old age when our strength physical and spiritual leaves us First thisWe ask of Him specific spiritual gifts A spirit of wisdom a spirit of prudence a spirit of stability in our spiritual life These are the things that are directly related to the great Feast of Pentecost which is the endless source of all the divine gifts In the end we pray to God for those who have departed from this life To them is the third prayer dedicated and it is also the longest We donrsquot know how they left this world Did they leave with true repentance and the rich fruits of a spiritual life Or did they leave with deficiencies and weaknesses with flaws and vices For these beloved persons we pray to the Holy Trinity to be merciful for all their transgressions and to place their souls and their names in the book of life in the bosoms of Abraham Isaac and Jacob in the place of the living in the Kingdom of Heaven That is we confess and proclaim that for those who repented there is no death but a transition from sadness to rest and joy Indeed how big is out duty of which we are reminded by the kneeling prayers of Pentecost which are dedicated to our beloved departed and how much we must pray for our loved ones who left before us for the heavens To pray for them in our own personal prayers To pray for them at the offering of the awesome sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist so the souls of our beloved may receive comfort and rest It is our duty and our debt We are reminded of this by the kneeling prayer of Pentecost So with meditation with faith hope and contrition let us accompany carefully the God-inspired words of these prayers But what is the meaning and what does the kneeling service reveal It is the pious reverent stance at the time of prayer which reveals humility repentance and contrition before God Our Lord Himself prayed while kneeling as it is written in Scripture

Πεντηκοστή Τι ζητάμε με τις τρεις ευχές της Γονυκλισίας του Πρωτοπρεσβύτερου Στυλιανού Ανανιάδη

Η γονατιστή Έτσι είναι γνωστή στον πολύ λαό η μεγάλη και επίσημη της Εκκλησίας μας ημέρα η Πεντηκοστή Και τούτο γιατί στον Εσπερινό της Δευτέρας του Αγίου Πνεύματος που ψάλλεται αμέσως μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία της Κυριακής μας καλεί όλους ο ιερεύς από το Ιερό Βήμα να προσευχηθούμε στην Αγία Τριάδα κλίναντες γόναταΝα προσευχηθούμε δηλαδή γονατιστοί στον Τριαδικό μας Θεό και διαβάζονται τότε από τον ιερέα τρείς ευχές σύμφωνα και με τη διδασκαλία της Εκκλησίας μας για τον Τριαδικό Θεό Αλλά τι ζητάμε με αυτές τις τρεις ευχές της γονυκλισίαςΑν θα θέλαμε με λίγα απλά λόγια να δώσουμε μια σύντομη περίληψη αυτών των ευχών θα λέγαμε τα εξήςΠρώτα πρώτα ομολογούμε μπροστά στο Θεό ότι είμαστε άνθρωποι αμαρτωλοί και έχουμε ανάγκη από το έλεος του Θεού δηλαδή τη ευσπλαχνία και τη φιλανθρωπία τουΤου λέμε με ειλικρίνεια και συντριβή ότι αμαρτήσαμε και να μη μας περιφρονήσειΝα μη θυμηθεί τις αμαρτίες που έχουμε διαπράξει τις φανερές και αφανείς στη νεότητά μας από άγνοια και μέχρι τώρα Τον παρακαλούμε ακόμα να μας προστατεύει και κατά τη γεροντική μας ηλικία τότε που οι δυνάμεις μας σωματικές και πνευματικές μας εγκαταλείπουνΑυτό πρώτοΤου ζητάμε συγκεκριμένα πνευματικά δώρα Πνεύμα σοφίας πνεύμα συνέσεως πνεύμα σταθερότητας στην πνευματική μας ζωήΕίναι αυτά που έχουν άμεση σχέση με τη μεγάλη γιορτή της Πεντηκοστής που είναι η αστείρευτη πηγή όλων των θείων δωρεώνΤέλος παρακαλούμε το Θεό για τους κεκοιμημένουςΣrsquo αυτούς κυρίως είναι αφιερωμένη η τρίτη ευχή και είναι η εκτενέστερηΔεν γνωρίζουμε ίσως πώς έφυγαν από αυτή τη ζωή Έφυγαν με πραγματική μετάνοια και πλούσιους καρπούς πνευματικής ζωήςΉ έφυγαν με ελλείψεις και αδυναμίες με ελαττώματα και κακίεςΓιrsquo αυτά τα αγαπητά μας πρόσωπα παρακαλούμε την Παναγία Τριάδα να φανεί ίλεως σε ότι επλημμέλησαν και να κατατάξει τα πνεύματα αυτών και τα ονόματά τους εν βίβλω ζωής εν κόλποις Αβραάμ Ισαάκ και Ιακώβ εν χώρα ζώντων εις βασιλείαν ουρανόν εν παραδείσου τρυφήΟμολογούμε δηλαδή και διακυρήττουμε ότι δια τους εν μετανοία εκδημήσαντας ουκ έστι θάνατος αλλά μετάστασης από τον λυπηρότερον επί τα χρηστότερα και θυμηδέστερα και ανάπαυσις και χαράΠόσο μεγάλο καθήκον μας υπενθυμίζουν πράγματι οι ευχές της γονυκλησίας της Πεντηκοστής που είναι αφιερωμένες στους προσφιλείς κεκοιμημένους μας αλλά και πόσο πρέπει να προσευχόμαστε για τους προσφιλείς μας οι οποίοι έφυγαν ενωρίτερα από εμάς για τον ουρανόΝα προσευχόμαστε στις κατrsquo ιδίαν ατομικές μας προσευχέςΝα προσευχόμαστε και κατά την προσφορά της φρικωδεστάτης θυσίας της Θείας Ευχαριστίας ώστε να λαμβάνουν άνεση και αναψυχή οι ψυχές των κεκοιμημένων μας Είναι χρέος και καθήκον μας Μας το υπενθυμίζει και η γονυκλινείς ικεσία της ΠεντηκοστήςΜε αυτοσυγκέντρωση λοιπόν με πίστη με ελπίδα και συντριβή ας συνοδεύουμε έτσι προσεκτικά τα θεόπνευστα λόγια των ευχώνΑλλά ποιο είναι το νόημα και τι φανερώνει η γονυκλησία Είναι ευλαβική στάση την ώρα της προσευχής που φανερώνει ταπείνωση μετάνοια συντριβή μπροστά στο ΘεόΚαι ο ίδιος ο Κύριος προσευχόταν γονατιστός διότι όπως αναγράφεται στη Γραφή ldquoΘεις τα γόνατα προσηύχετοrdquo
