Ryan
Was ist XB Sunday Matinee?

By the time you read this your purple tears will have dried, but the creation of this editorial comes fresh in the wake of Prince’s death. I would just like to take a moment to acknowl-edge this singular man. His music has touched the hearts and genitals of so many and today is truly a day when doves cry.
But with death comes new life and if your arms are getting tired already that’s because we’ve added four pages to The Chop. That’s right. Just in time for summer we’ve bulked up to a beefy 12 pages (including the cover and back page) giving us loads of space to entertain, inform, and ad-vise you about music-y things hap-pening around town. But don’t be alarmed; we haven’t gone corporate. Despite several juicy sponsorship deals offered to us by the likes of Nike, Monsanto, Kaufland, etc, The Chop is still funded by local shows and thirsty music lovers. So enjoy the fruits of our labor and party like its 1999.
Sincerely,
Ryan

eigentlich total zugängli-chund organisch…
B. Niklas
Interview by Sören Bill

Mai bei This Charming Man. Release Party im Antje Öklesund am 2. Juni.

Vague (Siluh Records, Vienna) bring their poppy post-punk to Berlin and their recently released In The Mean-time album which packed with fa-miliar post-punk tunes as if you can ever get enough of classic 80s and 90s indie tunes, prepare to be impressed. Local shoegazey-post-punk kids I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream celebrate the release of their debut album which, although a long time coming, was worth the wait and will be available on vinyl.
May 17th – Tiefgrund (Halle – Zukunft)
Hypnodrone Ensemble is an orchestral-experimental dronerock collective, a three-drummer, two gui-tar and one bass slinging ensemble of excellence based around a core of Berlin-based musicians Aidan Baker (Nadja, BBS, Caudal), David Dunnett (Man Meets Bear), Felipe Salazar (Caudal) and Jerémie Mortier (Alice in the Cities). This show will consist of two sets and they’ve invited a host of other Berlin musicians along to par-take so it promises to be a great one. Among those guests are Felix Tödtloff (Sun Worship), Du Champ, Diego Ferri (Chinawoman, Paro), and others.May 30th – Privat Club
Cate Le Bon up close and personal, a frightening prospect actually. Since the release of her Mug Museum LP in 2013, arguably her breakthrough album, she has barely paused for breath. From tour-ing with White Fence, making an album with said band’s maestro under the name Drinks and recording her fourth and quite spectacular album Crab Day (recorded also with Warpaint’s drummer Stella Mozgawa) this is one artist in full-flow and at some kind of creative peak; catch her while you can.

May 21st – Berghain Kantine
Steve Gunn on tour with Quilt ? A delicious one on the menu at the Kantine, hopefully the weath-er doesn’t heat it up too much in there. Quilt’s charming psych-pop stylings are seemingly back in town every few months and their fan base grows apace. Gunn hav-ing cut his teeth playing in Kurt Vile & The Violators has carved himself a niche much more inter-esting than that of Adam “War On Drugs-snoozeathon” Granduciel and is well worth a viewing, you could even call it the new Kurt Vile if you were so inclined.
1. How does a tour with your band look like?
Kala Brisella: Kein Netz Kein Netz Kein Netz “JA” an die 67777 Immer Weiter.
Highest Sea: A colourful roller coaster.
2. What’s best about it?
Kala Brisella: Wir prallen aufeinander.
Highest Sea: Discovering the venue and making it your home, passionate conversations late at night with people you don’t know and connect with and the fact that there’s always a Massive Attack song wherever you go.
3. What shouldn’t be missing?
Kala Brisella: BiFi und die neue Gala.
Highest Sea: Time to eat and coffee :D
GLAMOROUS TOUR LIFERight before playing a show together at Schokoladen to help us raise the money for this 4th issue, Kala Brisela (photo) and Highest Sea gave us some insight in their recent experiences from touring through Germany.

Located on a former West Berlin street seemingly stuck in time, Echo Bücher is a bookstore focussing on sounds, con-temporary music, and club culture. The first time I was there was after a picnic at the Humboldthain park nearby. After spending an hour browsing the shelves I ended up with four books including one about field recordings, classic manifest “The Art of Noise” by Luigi Russolo and a special guide entitled “How to disap-pear in America without a trace”. Besides books they stock records, magazines, sound objects and merchandise from in-dependent labels and when the weather is nice you can cool your heels and have a drink outside on the terrace. They also have a busy programme of events, regu-larly hosting exhibitions, lectures and concerts.
David Armengou arrived from Barcelona in 1998 and opened his shop in 2013. He named it “Echo” to combine the myths behind the word with the aspects of how sound resonance can make literature and music come together. When asked what he thinks about Amazon and its possible negative effects on his busi-ness, he answers quite simply that the books he has in store are mostly things you can not find on mainstream online
platforms. Take “Poemproducer” for instance, written by German-Finnish artist Antye Greie-Ripatti. It’s a collec-tion of 30 poems she wrote and incor-porated into her live performances. It was published with text translations in five languages and comes with “Beat Needle”, a digital album where one can experience her “sonic outburst of razor-edged beats and pilot vocal art” (AGF-poemproducer on Bandcamp). As you can imagine this is not something you’ll find after a couple of clicks. Indeed, Da-vid’s selection is still very related to his fascination for the word echo, his end-less interest for sounds and his passion for languages. He refined his taste and references with his connections to some renowned labels like Raster Noton and a constant consideration for local initia-tives and collaborations. Although half of the books on sale at Echo Bücher are in english there is also a sizeable contin-gent in german, french, japanese, span-ish, italian and even one in catalan. In short, there’s something for everyone.
The shop has also a wide range of magazines such as Mono Kultur from Berlin, zweikommasieben from Switzerland, fanzines and of coursethis very magazine you are reading
right now ,available at the desk. There are some magazines from Japan and Taïwan as well. On top of that, Echo Bücher is host-ing monthly exhibitions. The cur-rent one is curated by Sign Bit Zero, a new label from Leipzig founded by Kilian Krings.
Among the upcoming events in which literature and live perfor-mance merge, May 11th will be the book release of “Four”, ed-ited by Ryoko Akama, Heather Frasch and Daniel del Rio. The book “invites eleven works that linger in between categories of critical thinking, sonic art, music, visual art and literature” (Mumei, 2015). David is also planning a festival from July 14-16th with a collective from Sweden called Konstmusiksystrar, (sisters in contemporary music). This col-lective promotes young female or transgender composers from the Swedish music scene.

MAY 29TH + JUNE 1ST & 3RDFUX Gewinnt 3/3 - In welchem FUX nur aus dem, was sie bei Gewinnspielen gewonnen haben, ein ganzes Stück Theater machen
After FUX has challenged its luck for two months and solved crosswords together with the audience, rubbed scratch cards, participated in TV quiz shows, infiltrated Children painting competitions, threw cans, and bet on horses, they come with the obtained prizes back to the stageLets hope that the three of them (Stephan Dorn, Falk Rößler and Nele Stuhler) won some-thing to show beside the Ponto Performance Award for young artists – Congratulations !
> Theaterdiscounter, Klosterstr 44 13€ / 8€ – 20h
MAY 11TH – 12THStrategien begrenzter beunruhi-gung für ein weiterhin beruhigtes leben
Crime against art or is it art itself? The performance STRATEGIEN BEGRENZ-TER BEUNRUHIGUNG FÜR EIN WEIT-ERHIN BERUHIGTES LEBEN investi-gates a fascinating criminal case. After a vacation the artist Malte Scholz comes back in his studio and finds a series of self-portraits painted black and a anon-ymous letter that tries to explain the act. After the police proves that the letter is fake the artist continues his investiga-tions by himself. Crime case goes per-formance – go home CSI Miami, we have a new evening program !

MAY 20TH – JUNE 4THMy heart’s in my hand, and my hand is pierced, and my hand’s in the bag, and the bag is shut, and my heart is caught – By Phil Collins
No, I am not recommending you a reun-ion-show of Genesis or a new musical of a man who should stay at his drums. I am talking about the english born, berlin based artist who has been seen at Das Gift drinking beer (and maybe reading the chop...just rumours). THIS Phil Collins is back with his honest and poetic installation which he al-ready showed at HAU2 last year. In it he shows how surprising and wonder-ful the thin line between impoverished living, melancholia, and music can be.

ECHO BUECHER
GUESTLIST
If a literary man puts together two words about music, one of them will be wrong.”
Schriftsteller wie E.T.A.

Knowing where to get a good burrito is important. Firstly because you’re going to want to eat good burritos and secondly because then you can tell people where the best burritos are and act all cool about it. There are of course other important things in life, like Prince (he’s dead now) but nothing brings out the pedantic in me like the particu-larities of what makes a good burrito. Here are my top 5* burrito places in Berlin.
1. Machete. Not as squishy as most burritos, I like that. Also I’m on my way there now and I’m super hungry so 5 stars.
2. Neta. Bit more pricey but very tasty and lots of nice stuff in it. Not only is the food great here it’s also located conveniently close to my place so 4 1/2 stars.
3. Berlin Burrito Company. Solid, nothing crazy just a straight up decent burrito. Will always have a place in my heart because my daughter said ‘guacamole’ here for the first time. 4 stars
4. Mishba. I think they use Emmental cheese which is kind of er.. mental but it’s real cheap and the hot sauce is good. I had a really nice chat with the guy sat next to me. He and his family were over on holiday from Ireland and although they distract me a bit from concentrating on rating the taste of my burrito, I liked them. 4 stars
5. Dolores. This one has been around for a while now and I’m sure there are better places but to be honest I haven’t been to any other burrito places in Berlin. Also they have smokey peanut salsa. 3 1/2 stars* I’ve only been to 5 burrito places in Berlin.

TOP OF THE CHOP
Liebes Berlin,

THE MOKKERS SAY GOODBYE
S H O W - R O -S C O P E
ARIES – When human curiosity suggests steps in a million differ-ent directions, choose a path that evokes a sense of familiarity.
TAURUS – It’s time we all reach out for something new. You’ve got the gift of persuasion on your side – use it to reach out for others too.
GEMINI – That revolutionary rock’n’roll knows how to unleash this urge for total change! Go play with the fire but take care of yourself.
CANCER – Is the water warm enough? Better check twice this month. Don’t build on everything that looks good at first glance.
LEO – Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees, so listen care-fully. Let change be a privilege to you, not a burden.
VIRGO – Isn’t it a shame this ain’t a movie? This month deserves to be on film. You’ll get showered with praise when you least expect it.
LIBRA – You’re more of the thin-skinned type this month. Let me tell you that sometimes it snows in April. Pack a sweater just in case.
SCORPIO – Decisions can be hard can’t they? Here’s a little help for starters : get ice cream, no cake. And don’t forget the napkins.
SAGITTARIUS – We are gathered here today to get through this thing called life and you’re entitled to some extra attention this month.
CAPRICORN – You wanna join in when you hear Joni singing “Help me I think I’m falling”? A good rest still is the best cure for exhaustion.
AQUARIUS – There’s a lot of movement in your friendships at the moment. If something don’t compute that might just mean this something’s got to end.
PISCES – You’re blessed with plenty possibilities, but you should acknowledge your weaknesses to get ahead. Be your fire when you’re cold.
The cosmos might not always control your destiny, but when it does, The Chop has experts on hand to keep you in the celestial-know.
